For months now, my wife Kimberley and I have received encouragement from family, friends, colleagues, and supporters from across South Dakota and the country to run for the presidency of the United States. We have appreciated hearing their concerns about where the country is headed and their hopes for a new direction.During this time, Kimberley and I and our two daughters have given a great deal of thought to how we might best serve South Dakota and our nation. That process has involved lots of prayer.
Along the way, we have been reminded of the importance of being in the arena, of being in the fight. And make no mistake that during this period of fiscal crisis and economic uncertainty there is a fight for the future direction of America. There is a battle to be waged over what kind of country we are going to leave our children and grandchildren and that battle is happening now in Washington, not two years from now. So at this time, I feel that I am best positioned to fight for AmericaÂ’s future here in the trenches of the United States Senate.
I want to thank those who have encouraged us and prayed for us during the past several months. We are forever grateful for all the support.
John and Kimberley
Personally, I wasn't so hot on the guy. Senators with no executive experience aren't on the top of my list of candidates I want to see run.

He's right, in many ways a senator has way more power than a POTUS. But it's getting a little scary that no one seems to want to challenge BO, no one seems to want to step up almost as though they know something we don't know. I mean, which republican candidates have actually come out and declared that they are a candidate. Well, guess if no one steps up, he gets it by default. Has that ever happened?
Posted by: curious at February 22, 2011 08:18 AM (p302b)
If he had been a Governor he would be right at the top for me. Otherwise he's a fallback at best.
Posted by: Rocks at February 22, 2011 08:19 AM (Q1lie)
He's been a darkhorse favorite, but he's never accomplished anything in the Senate. By all accounts he's a good guy, but again he comes from a small state that is already dark red and he doesn't bring a huge list of accomplishment with him.
I guess this means we have to pick from 2008 retreads. shit.

I'm sure you guys are sick of hearing this from me but because women vote and because they are less informed (usual concessions to moronettes and the other 2% that are) the nominee needs to not be old, bald, short or ugly. I hate this, but it's true.
However, I don't include Chris Christi in this because even in his girth there is something powerful about him. His drawback would be (for the non-purist crowd) his New Jersey accent might not play well in the south.

Bank panics have a way of scaring people. I would be more concerned with Scamnesty, Foreign Treaties (Senate vote), Entitlements.
We are not going to get The Perfect Candidate. We will be choosing the lesser of flawed people.

You and CAC summed up both my reactions. When "generic Republican" does so well on the ballot, then they don't get more attractive than Thune. He has a solid conservative record except for a little pork. He looks the part and is a good communicator. He knows policy inside and out and can articulate it. But his comment on "being in the arena" means he knows the political winds favor a governor right now. Huntsman / Rubio 2012.
Even if Christie runs, Republicans will not rally to his moderate views. Sure, Huntsman is moderate, but he is rock solid on abortion, guns and economics. He has more sophisticated foreign policy views than coddling Muslims. Chris Christie was unable to sell Republicans on Mike Castle and Meg Whitman. Granted, they were blue state candidates, but it looks like his magic only works in NJ, where we are still waiting to see results. Ann Coulter is wrong.
Mitt Romney is another northeast liberal governor who will not go over well in 2012 any better than he did in 2008. But he will try.
Huckabee will not get the nomination now that he is more familiar to the public. Maybe he can take out Romney in Iowa, if "no one catches fire there." Again, I think Iowa will go to Huntsman. Mormonism was never the issue with Romney, and I think voters will go out of their way to prove it.
Pawlenty is too boring. He'll be lucky to finish third by the primary's end.
Daniels has no shot. If you nominate him, it will be a worse ass beating than when Dole was the nominee. Voters care about looks, enthusiasm and energy. They don't want any truces, healthcare rationing or compromise. They want a winner. Bush's former budget director cannot make the case that Obama is spending irresponsibly. Sadly, the public still gives Obama credit for "cleaning up the Bush administration's mess."
Likewise, people have tired of the national discussion on race. The Beer Summit was the first time Obama's approval ratings dropped. Barbour and Cain have no shot for those reasons expressed in different ways. One is too closely associated with the worst memories of the South under Jim Crowe. The other has a slimmer political resume than Obama, but is black.

I have to disagree. People are tired of the Left Double Standards on race. In my own city, black thugs just attacked a white TV reporter in broad daylight, covering some kind of public rally said thugs were having. I am beginning to think Barbour, or someone like him, is just the kind of "in your face" to the RaceLeft that we need.

No, the majority of Americans feel slavery was a moral stain on our country's history. Unless you can convince them Obama wants actual restitution and is a Marxist in no uncertain terms, you will lose that argument. The media will see to it, as evidenced by Rev. Wright and the LA Times tape.

I think, from OJ Simpson acquittals to Reginald Denny Beatings to Al Sharpton becoming legitimate to phony "Beer Summits", people are sick and tired of Left demogoguery on race.
Yes, the MFM media will lie, as they always do. And I know the MFM has power. But as with phony "climate change" people are finally asking themselves who is correct, the MFM or their lying eyes and ears.

The Beer Summit was Obama presuming to lecture them after they had already "done the right thing."
But that is precisely it. Obama in essence said, "Nope, it will never be enough. Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie."
And I think it is time for a GOP candidate who says back, "quit your phony baiting and get out of the way and stop screwing up the economy..." yes, the economy, barring a foreign policy disaster a la Iran, will be key.
Posted by: Curmudgeon at February 22, 2011 09:57 AM (ujg0T)
You can't even get the public's attention on Pigford. Issa is going after FNMA, FMAC and Countrywide instead. There is too much filth to be uncovered till you can show Americans just how much Obama wants to give away. Keep the subject about the economy, not "Obama wants to give your money to blacks." Because even Pigford proves you wrong.
