Breaking: Mubarak to Resign Tonight?
— Gabriel Malor

Several news outlets are reporting that Egypt president Mubarak is going to resign tonight and hand over power. It seems to be related to the news that he is planning to hand over control of the military to military leaders.

NBC's Richard Engel says two independent sources have confirmed that Mubarak will step down. In addition, the armed forces supreme council has convened to begin the orderly transition of power, NBC says.

Wonder what happens next...

Update: Probably a good idea to keep this in the "rumor" category. As ever when it comes to the Middle East, actual knowledge seems scarce and contradictory.

Apparently Reuters is quoting the Egyptian Information Minister saying that Mubarak will not be stepping down in his speech (although I can't get the actual article on the Reuters website).

There's a possibility that we're looking at two factions of the Egyptian government. The military, along with the Prime Minister, is "announcing" that Mubarak will step down at gunpoint, essentially, and the civilian government is resisting.

Oh, and now what are the Saudi's going to think about this... you know, the same Saudi's who said the would support Mubarak financialy if America did not treat him with respect?

From the Arabic perspective, where Dignity is a very important thing, we Dis'd our Ally Mubarak, and treated him like a little school boy... and other Arabs see this...

This whole thing was so mismanaged its pathetic.

Some peeps at our embassy are taken hostage by the Brotherhood. Obama crashes a plane in Cairo but otherwise tries to wish the situation away, giving Palin a push over the electoral line in 2012.  Immediately after inauguration, Palin issues very stern statement and starts moving military assets into place.  Hostages are released with little delay

10 Will a handover to the military be enough to quell the "Arab Street"? The Military is well respected in the country, so let's hope.

But the fucking Muslim Brotherhood is smacking its lips with a taste of potential power, so let's not be too hopeful.

I would think that if the rioters don't stop now, the military will have no choice. People need to go to work. Their economy is being crushed by these protests. Some 5-10% of their economy, tourism, is completely on hold.

My issue with these protests is that I have no idea what they want and I don't think they do either.

There is not one message they are all gathering around. It seems that Mubarak leaving is their number one goal, but if he leaves, what then? Do they go home and vote for their candidates in September? Do they want elections right now? They have no central leader(or leaders) or message.

I figure that's as good a guess as any.  Some say that in the end there will be only chaos.  I am not so optimistic - chaos often provides opportunities to bring about a new and better order.

I suggest that in the end there will be only ruin.  Despair has already arrived.

59 So, the Muslim Brotherhood is claiming that they don't want to assume power in Egypt?
Very good, they're following the playbook I used in Iran!

First, wait for the masses to rise up against the current gov't (in my case, The Shah), then voice support for a change of government, but claim you have no interest in the reins of power.
Once a weak interim gov't is established, gin up more demonstrations and unrest (as violent as possible, this is key) that forces the military to repress the demonstrators and hopefully generate dozens of martyrs to the cause.
Once the street run red with blood, THEN offer a slate of fundamentalist candidates that promise a return to order, public safety and a return to "our Muslim roots".
Then, push for elections to gain power, use the mosques to push your candidates and expose the ruling junta as "heretics".
"One Man, One Vote" morphs into "One Man, One Vote, ONE TIME!"

Voila! A do-it-yourself Islamic Republic!

61 Otis; was it the phony Virus Scan trojan?

I picked up that once from the home page here when I was using IE-8 with all the stuff enabled.

That trojan often uses script commands associated with flash player or just plane any script commands loaded.

You have to kill that trojan almost immediately now. You can not click on anything and if you can't use task manager to kill it you have to turn off the machine and you have to do it quick.

If it loads the only way to get rid of it is reformat the drive and start over.

Since then I run fire fox with script block and no flash player. No problems since then.

Aha. Some dipshit being interviewed finally mentioned that this might look like Turkey -- gee, that was tough to come up with ... although he didn't explain how Turkey has gone from a adamantly secular government, with the secular military at the top, to a civilian controlled government that has put itself on the side of the islamists and broken traditional ties with the West. My take is there's no way to do this from "within the constitution" and get the protesters to settle down.

Military "organized coup" seems to be the least bad option.
At least their military was friendly to reporters, and has been quoted as saying "we love America".

Time will tell.

92 Shoot, the pre tag didn't work. Anyways, surround the text with less-than, "em", greater-than and less-than, slash, "em", greater-than.

94 John Scott and his red headed babe co-anchor are both liberal douches.

Posted by: Vic at February 10, 2011 12:00 PM (M9Ie6)

Scott usually keeps his mouth shut and sticks to the script ... which is why I'm amazed that none of the Fox producers knows enough to tell him to stop saying "organized coup".

Jenna Lee is certainly a liberal idiot.  Fox would do well to get rid of her, already.  But ... I guess they want a morning Shep.

95 If the people want a true democratic republic, not suleman, not the military, not the muslim bros, then they are not going to be happy with an "organized military coup".  They're going to keep protesting.

Posted by: curious at February 10, 2011 08:07 AM (p302b)

96 Just let the military run the show until political parties can be formed and responsible elections held. The MB will rule if given half a chance or by force if necessary. Military is the only option to stop them now. You have to give the moderates in the country enough time to organize or we will be eating "Egyptian food" and Dearborn will be just one of the many more Muslim enclaves within our own nation. I still don't see this ending well for us or Isreal no matter the result. Stop all sharia law in this country as many are trying to do now. No multiculturalism eva.

97 "organized military coup".

Posted by: curious at February 10, 2011 12:07 PM (p302b)

Why do you people keep repeating Jon Scott's idiocy? Pretty much all coups are organized.

This is likely to be the same thing that happens in every muslim country - the military takes over because the population, if left to themselves, would make a mess of their nation and everything around them. This is Turkey (which actually put supreme military power in their Constitution, which the EU then forced them to take out in 2003, after which Turkey has descended into the islamist abyss and turned against the West). This is Pakistan. This is how islamic countries go, if we're lucky. Otherwise, it just gets too ugly.

98 The expression that Jon Scott was searching for is "bloodless coup".

99 Just read something on twitter saying he left the country yesterday and the message is pre recorded and then this just came up on twitter breaking news:  "Contrary to reports, Mubarak is in Cairo, presidential source says to NBC"

Geez how do you know what the truth is

100 Twitter says Obama will make a statement on Egypt in about an hour.

Goody.

101 This whole thing was so mismanaged its pathetic.

But then you thought Obama was on our side, didn't you? Google CEO becomes tech czar in 2010. Muslim Brotherhood founder's grandson has ban on his visa lifted shortly thereafter. Then Google's Middle East guy creates a Facebook page for El Baradei and foments insurrection over there. Coincidence, I'm sure.

102 With the amount of clueless liberals they hire, I wonder how people on the Left can continue calling Fox News a "conservative" source. 85 percent of their web content is Associated Press, most of their newsreaders are Democrats, etc.

"I think judgment matters. If you have something that you donÂ’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldnÂ’t be doing it in the first place, but if you really need that kind of privacy, the reality is that search engines including Google do retain this information for some time, and itÂ’s important, for example, that we are all subject in the United States to the Patriot Act. It is possible that that information could be made available to the authorities."

Ah, so this was the bud that lent BO the house for his vacations?

104 You know, people are fantasizing about Egypt changing as some harbinger for the rest of the arab world.  Need I remind people that the same exact things were said about Egypt's move with Camp David.  The rest of the arab world did not follow Egypt.  They ostracized Egypt.  The threats from the arab world didn't lessen.  In fact, they moved more firmly into the international space and spread themselves far wider in bases and in attacks and in severity.  The only arab state to "follow" Egypt was Jordan, but Jordan had been relatively at peace with Israel since their foundings (though Jordan participated in the arab-Israeli wars because it had to, and we all remember who Jordan backed in the two gulf wars).

I wish the news would include a little, tiny bit of historical perspective.  Just a smidgen.

Beck was talking about what the times was saying people were saying about the bros.  ... it seems that even a coptic christian psychiatrist (female) admired their immense organizational abilities and was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

beck was screaming "don't do that, they'll kill you"

Mohammed: 'Great idea Abduhl, but what shall we call it so people will know we are definitely not into any religeous stuff?'

Abduhl:'I dunno Mo, how about MUSLIM Brotherhood!'

Mohammed: Brilliant!! Not even a hint of religion in that name!

112 Most people wear lace wigs because of alopecia or other hair thinning.? But some people love lace front wigs because it allows them to change textures, colors, and styles without damaging their natural hair. Most importantly because cheap lace wigs are not like other wigs, and they actually look like the hairs are growing out of the scalp.
