— LauraW It's Old
In 1941, a Finnish businessman named Tor Borg trained his dog to raise it's paw (heil) in response to the verbal command 'Hitler.'
Well. Well, well well.
Mocking the Fuhrer?
This won't do.
In the months preceding Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union, Berlin's Foreign Office commanded its diplomats in the Nazi-friendly country to gather evidence on the dog and its owner - and even plotted to destroy the owner's pharmaceutical business.----------------------------------snip------------------
Borg was ordered to the German Embassy in Helsinki and questioned about his dog's unusual greeting habits.
The businessman denied ever calling the dog by the German dictator's name, but acknowledged that his wife called the dog Hitler. He tried to play down the accusations, saying the paw-raising only happened a few times in 1933 - shortly after Hitler came to power.
Unbelievable. I love this story.
Fortunately, the secret rats witnesses backed out of testifying in court. Which is eminently sensible when you imagine how petty and stupid the testimony would have sounded.
This is why parody and mockery are the finest political weapons* ever devised. It is very hard to publicly prosecute a joker without making an ass of yourself in the process.

I fervently hope it is the latter.

My ass make "Obama" noises after a night of Mexican food and beer.
Smells like "Obama" as well. My wife refuses to walk on the same side of the house after that kind of a bathroom break.

It also gives me a thought on the gun control aspect that is being brought up by the left.
All we need to do is put stickers on guns like the ones they put on lawnmowers (That show in graphics flying fingers if you put your hand into the spinning blades) That way idiots will finally know they can kill people.

Any inadvertent absorption and/or use or misuse of the political atmosphere this martial verbiage creates is not attributable to this author, this blog, or the right wing in general. Fuck yourself.
Yet you identify with a wing, a term used by the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps to refer to a unit consisting of several sqadrons. Worse, you drag your non–matrial-verbiage commenters into it.
As a private citizen, my chief concern is the general use of military terms with no consideration of its major consequences. Does anything warrant this verbiage, or are you just being petty when you do this? Because once you master the language and have command of it, there's no technical reason to use martial terms to produce first class writing.
Then again, maybe everyone here at the HQ is in the tank for the right. Maybe I should read a column in the Washington Post instead.

Unfortunately, the Ministry of Disinformation and Data Revision will not be able to blame the latest major economic data point revision on dyslexia. After as we previously noted, the Chicago PMI was revised lower from 68.6 to 66.8 just three short days ago, today that other standout number, the Philly Fed, which had originally printed at the better than expected level of 24.3, has just been revised much lower to 20.8. Since this number means the Philly Fed actually declined from the November print of 22.5, one can see why even the Chinese are seeing their jaws drop at the ceaseless "adjustment" of what has now become an unrepentantly upwardly economic data stream.

Are you suggesting we train our pets to "say" "(go) Fuck Yourself" to the MFM?
I'm down with that, but only a few species of birds can enunciate well enough to be understood. Pretty much everything else from whatever critter sounds like "gaaack", "mmmooorph moorzle", "Don't you have something better to eat?", or " ".
And if we don't have pets, can we just train our kids instead?
Sincerely,
Inquisitive in Flyover Country

Ah, but you, yourself, are violating your own rules. To whit:
* 'major' - as in, a Military rank
* 'master' - as in "Master and Commander" a reference to a Ship's Captain
* 'command' - again with the martial term
* 'in the tank' - tanks are military vehicles which are only good for war.

OT but it relates to humorless assholes
Even if humans stop producing excess carbon dioxide in 2100, the lingering effects of global warming could span the next millennia. The results? By the year 3000, global warming would be more than a hot topic - the West Antarctic ice sheet could collapse, and global sea levels would rise by about 13 feet (4 meters), according to a new study.
Using a computer model, researchers looked at two scenarios - an end to humans' industrial carbon dioxide emissions by 2010 and by 2100 - stretched out to the year 3000.
Ohhh noes!!!! We're all doomed by a make believe catastrophe. Quick everyone stop breathing to save Gaia

I take offense at the notion that Finland was a "Nazi-friendly" country during WWII. They were in a notably difficult position between the Nazis and the Commies, and the reluctant alliance with the Nazis was the only way to maintain their independence.
They were also pretty much the only Axis-allied/occupied nation to tell the Nazis to fuck off when ordered to round up their Jews for extermination.

History puts Finland on the Axis side of WWII, officially.
History also judges Finland favorably for the reason you mentioned. Lithuania was also in a tought spot in '41, but the Lithuanians behaved quite differently.

They're worried about something that might happen 990 years from now? Some perspective is called for here. After all, everyone knows that in 990 years we'll all be long dead from Red Dye No. 2, flouridated water, second hand smoke, mercury preservatives in vaccines, nuclear winter and alar-covered apples.

I was reading an excellent book about the battle of Stalingrad some time last year. Turns out that one of the higher-up German generals took his dog to war and had taught it the same trick - a lifted paw "heil" whenever someone would say "Heil Hitler." Sorry - I forget which one. It was mildly scandalous, but nobody really dared do anything about it. It pays to be important...

Very true. Of course, I think that's why most Leftists just take the jokers out back and put a bullet in them. No messy public disclosures that way. They don't much care for that whole "rule of law" thing.

Hmmm, ruin the guy and his business over a sieg heiling dog...kinda reminds me of this plumber I knew a long time ago...
It is true that lack of humor (true humor -- that can mock oneself as easily and well as mocking others) is distinctly lacking in hard core ideologues. I use it as a way to base my opinions of some of my acquaintences (in the humanities most people identify as "liberal"...but if they can make fun of themselves and laugh at jokes made on them, then likely they are liberal-liberals, not lefties, and are thus infinitely more easy to live with and pleasant to be around).
My dad had a captain who was an obnoxious, humorless little martinet: they had a talent show for the K9s and handlers...my dad had taught his dog to salute (among other tricks), but the "salute" changed according to the rank my dad shouted out: the "salute" for a captain? Hiking his leg. The captain was not amused.
