— DrewM He previously announced he wouldn't be seeking reelection at the end of his term due to an affair and subsequent cover up of payoffs. Now he's leaving tomorrow. (May 3rd seems to be the actual date)
Ensign, 53, began notifying Nevada friends of his intentions late Thursday. The senator has kept his distance from official GOP circles in Washington for months, but word quickly spread to GOP figures inside the Beltway who confirmed a report by Nevada politics watcher Jon Ralston of the Las Vegas Sun to NJ.Ensign quickly put an end to the speculation, releasing a statement Thursday evening confirming the reports, and announcing that his retirement would be effective on May 3.
"While I stand behind my firm belief that I have not violated any law, rule, or standard of conduct of the Senate, and I have fought to prove this publicly, I will not continue to subject my family, my constituents, or the Senate to any further rounds of investigation, depositions, drawn out proceedings, or especially public hearings," Ensign said. "For my family and me, this continued personal cost is simply too great."
GOP Governor Brian Sandoval gets to appoint a replacement. Speculation seems to be he'll name Congressman Dean Heller who had already announced a run to replace Ensign.
Sharron Angle had previously announced plans to run for Heller's seat, so she's likely to run in the special election that will be announced to replace Heller. There are several other candidates for next year's primary but given her huge fundraising and name recognition advantages, there's a good chance we'll see Congresswoman Angle in the next few months.

AoSHQ beats NY Times!
They still don't know Crystal Magnum(Duke rape accuser) was indicted for murder.
I am assuming this is good shit, since the longer Ensign is out, the less people will remember he was a Republican.

Yes, but Ensign is paving the way for Heller to become an incumbent Senator (very helpful in next year's election) and for Angle to become an incumbent Congresswoman.
Even if that's not his main intention, he's doing a good thing for the Republicans in Nevada.

In any given case it may or may not be the right thing to do, it's just another double standard we have to fight against instead of actually doing things like budget cuts or getting rid of stifling regulations.

4 Another case of what if. If he had been a Dem not only would he not resign but he would stay in office until he died.
You know, Dems have it easy. Is it REALLY news when someone you expect to be a lying sleezebag, is caught being a lying sleezebag? That's why for Dems, this behavior is no big deal.

Why I became a conservative? Well running a newspaper route and saving money certainly helped. The fact my dad support Taft in '52 probably gives you an idea of my family's leaning.

64 I'm also a conservative because my mom always had talk radio on in the car when I was a kid and I think I absorbed it through osmosis.
That's similar to my story, although it had somewhat of a twisted effect. I grew up worrying about issues no kid should have to worry about. (A lot of her listening was in the area of heavy-duty social conservatism.) Lots of dire warnings about the state of education, family, the nation, the economy, etc.

My dad was a Kennedy-Democrat (until McGovern ran) and my mom was a life-long Republican. We always talked about politics and current events in my house. I think a few things when I was young sealed my politics.
One was how the Democrats (especially) wanted to cut and run from Vietnam. Our neighbors across the street were a former Naval officer and his Vietnamese wife. We heard so much about her family and I was dumb-founded by the images of the people being rescued from the rooftops by helicopter. Knowing that the folks who wanted to leave them there included the asshole yippies who ruined the 4th of July for us one year also helped.
Abortion was another. It seemed obvious to me at aged 8 - and still very much obvious to me today, after many years of schooling (including a Ph.D. in developmental biology), that human life starts at conception and that human life is precious. No amount of gum flapping by people who want to justify killing an innocent someone else has shaken my position on that.
Finally, of all things, I remember arguing with my friend - we were probably about 9 or 10 - about school busing. I have no idea why it was in the news (I lived in a very integrated community by then, so it wasn't a local issue), but I could tell from her arguments that she thought the government should "make" people behave a certain way. It didn't make sense to me. I knew then, and know now, that peoples' hearts have to change from within. You can't legislate away social ills. It doesn't work.
