— DrewM Above the post update:
Bloomberg says the suspect is "an Al Qaeda sympathizer" who planned to bomb police cars, Post Office and troops returning home.
Jose Pimental, 27 from Manhattan, is being described as a lone wolf and not connected to a larger plot.
Pimental is a native of the Dominican Republican who is a US citizen, and a Muslim convert.
NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly is talking about this guy. It sounds like he's been on their radar for awhile (years).
Original Post:
Mayor Bloomberg is going to be doing a presser in moments.
The case was "terror related" but there was no imminent threat because the suspect was under arrest, a law enforcement official said, declining to be identified before the official announcement at 7:30 p.m.CNN said the man learned how to build a pipe bomb from the al Qaeda online magazine "Inspire" and planned to target soldiers returned from overseas, police and post offices.
The bomb would have worked if the suspect succeeded in assembling it properly, CNN said, citing unnamed sources.

Every time I read about one of these wantwits gets busted trying something like this I just shake my head in disbelief. Inspire magazine? Out and out 'tards. You can buy US military tested and approved handbooks on improvised munitions, and many other topics of general mayhem at military surplus stores. You would be surprised at the amount of carnal knowledge found in "unconventional warfare" manuals the military declassified.

People don't realize how fragile the peace and order of our society is, and how much it relies on a mass decision by the citizens to reject violence. Even the OWS douches clamoring for revolution accept this basic decision. If they didn't they'd show up carrying guns. I often say that a true rebellion in the US, even from a small group, would make Iraq and Afghanistan look like a schoolyard fight.

I decided what was wanted was "charnel knowledge" - as in "charnel house."
It's a bit weak, but acceptable, especially since "cha" is pronounced "kha" in "character", though not in "charter."
YMMV.

The Republican's mistake was believing that the Democrats would shrink from destroying the US military, either from patriotism or fear of the electorate. They should have learned from the ObamaCare vote that that isn't true.
They're suicide bombers on their run.

Just what side is Boehnor on, anyway?
The idea behind sequestration is to make it so painful that both sides make a deal. But there are several problems with that, including the fact that a sequester is not binding. The Republicans have a choice now about whether they wish to keep the amount and swap cuts or override the entire sequester. Since it does not kick-in until 2013, they have that long to determine what they are going to do. It can also be overturned after 2013.

One hopes that at least all those base closures that should have happened decades ago will finally happen.
Where you been CC? We just finished a round of base closures. The commission issued its report in 2005. The closures had to be completed by September 2011 and they were.

@231. Oh..I know what it means. The military has a manual for EVERYTHING.
@234. Yep.
That's why you see so many bomb makers missing parts, or ending up splattered on a wall like a modern art masterpiece.

Jose Pimental, 27 from Manhattan, is being described as a lone wolf and not connected to a larger plot.
Pimental is a native of the Dominican Republican who is a US citizen, and a Muslim convert.
Islam is just TOO large a plot, I guess.

Or that you could find it in text files on a BBS just about anywhere, before the internet?
Compare the the threats we were facing just five years ago, to the plots that have been foiled in the last few years.
It's working. We've effectively reduced Al Qaeda's skill set to the point where their operatives are no better that common (well, slightly uncommon) American criminals.

The real question here is how is Bush to blame?

#246,
LOL, even the spammers are trying to sell us bomb-making parts.
Just in time, I couldn't figure out how to make bombs out of lace wigs.
