— Ace You might have thought, "Gee, didn't we know that?"
Not exactly; his previous word had been that he would "make his intentions clear." Candidates often pre-announce their announcements. (And re-announce sometimes too.)
That kind of silliness.
So this is news.

My only problem with David Dewhurst for Senate is that he's a lawyer. There are already too many lawyers in the Congress. We don't need more.
Of course, the way things have shaken out, my choices are two lawyers and a man I suspect is more squishy than John McCain, so maybe I'll have to vote for him anyway.

You're a complete and total idiot. Rick Perry is not "Pro-Amnesty" or "Pro-Dream Act."
His stance on Immigration is basically- if you're here to work, and you're not making trouble, we've got bigger fish to fry (I disagree, but it's hardly 'pro-amnesty').
And the bill that people are calling "The DREAM Act" is a bill that says people who were brought here as minor children by their parents, illegally, get in-state tuition rates. Again, not my favorite, but hardly a mortal sin. I don't even completely recall if it got passed- I don't think it did, but I lost track of some of those things, so I might have just missed it.

Should be interesting tonight to see the tone of the debate. Civilized? Or another GOP circular firing squad?
All of these Republican candidates should pledge not to attack one another, just go after Obama, there is plenty of ammunition there. Attack him with what you would do to fix the problems he created.
Example: A question about jobs is posed to the debater: Answer with: "During the Obama administration unemployment has doubled since he took office and it looks like it may stay that way due to the inability of the Obama administration to create new jobs. Here is what I would do to immediately create jobs. I would provide a tax credit of 1/2 the first year salary for every new hire for any company, and pay for it by cutting the number of government regulatory departments by 50% in my first year."
Get the idea?

Neither did I, Vic, and I did look pretty hard.
He signed the (stupid) in-state tuition law that was put into motion before he was Governor -- but he did sign it. That law provides Texas tuition rates for bordering counties in IIRC Oklahoma, some other state(s), and Mexico. It's not really an explicit illegal alien tuition waiver, in other words. Still, not great.
And he - as did others - made a non-committal "it's not for us" sort of statement about Arizona's immigration law. Again, I don't expect governors to critique other states' laws, but I suppose that's a knock on him.
He seems about the same or a little better than my Utah governor on immigration. Could be better but he could be much worse.

As to Palin, I don't think she is going to run. Never did. And she and Perry are tight as ticks. She even campaigned for him against Kay Bailey. Sarah Palin holds too much weight doing what she is doing now. Love that she is restarting her bus tour two days before Obama starts riding in his taxpayer funded bus that he has thrown so many under. Gotta love Sarah's timing.

Substantial allegations.
If they smear him with an anti-LDS label and it sticks sufficiently to concern people here, then I would not be comfortable vocally supporting Perry. I heard a rumor that Perry prays. Then, this morning, someone suggested that he was unapologetically "revivalist". I was stunned, I mean, revivalist connotes tents and amens and prayer and, ahem, the south. Then someone started throwing around the word "evangelical". "Evangelize" means to tell people about the gospel. Well, how strange is that? People talking and not about "women's issues" and "rights". This guy appears to be pretty damned far removed from Rules for Radicals and Harvard.
I wonder if he ever had a date before his current spouse?

For all those who harp on the "Texas" Dream Act, they never bother to tell you about Texas vs. Certain Named and Unnamed Alien Children, do they?
You see, these folks would rather Texas just ignore these kids, not requiring them to finish high school, have lived here for at least 3 years and applying for their citizenships. They would rather those kids just turn to gangbanging and running guns to Mexico instead of being productive citizens, paying taxes, that the U.S. government is NOT going to kick out anyway. How stupid can they get?

It should be noted that I think this will be Perry's weak spot for conservatives- - Texans tend to have a different relationship with the border than other states.
I agree with you, but I don't think it will be a death knell for him.
And it's not just Texas. It's a regional thing. We have that problem here in Utah.
I'm opposed to any form of amnesty -- and I'm not even sure I'd like to see a guest worker program -- but it is a lot different talking about that in theory from some state that doesn't have a lot of illegals than it is talking about solutions when you're living with the problem day in and day out. It just is. I've lived all over and it is a different kettle of fish in CA or UT or TX than it is in MD or VT or MA or even IL.

The first time you get some real shit, do it. It's not like you're getting it twice, anyway.
Palin and Perry split enough votes to allow Romney the win.
Perry and Romney have overlapping fanbases, too, so that three-way would split about evenly—until the ladies, who are anyone-but-Palin, picked a favorite between Romney and Perry. Based on their hair.
Romney's 'do is more "dad's friend who touched my butt at the pool," and Perry's is more "guy I banged on vacation because he said he was a dolphin doctor but it turns out he works in a scuba shop," so Romney'd win.

I'd imagine that he's well enough liked in TX to be reelected as much as he has been...and he needed Hispanic support to get there. Not to belabor the point, ace, but in that case, wouldn't Bachmann as VP be beneficial? For one, it would give her an opportunity to gain some executive branch experience without the pressure of being the actual POTUS. And it would, I think, hold onto a lot of dyed in the wool conservatives who are going to look at Perry's "HPV vaccine" and "in-state tuition for illegals" stances and see "RINO!!!" A lot of very conservative voters are really only now getting involved in the voting process, and they're feeling snakebit. They don't want to give an inch because government has always shown that they'll take a mile. I can't dismiss those concerns, either, but I'll bite the bullet if I have to.

I want to know how Perry would handle the illegal immigration issue on a national scale. I agree that illegal immigration is a different animal in border states than it is for states like mine (despite those damn Canadians who come down here and talk all French and shit). But at least part of that is due to the federal government's utter disregard for its own immigration laws. States like Arizona and Texas have to do what they have to do to try and get a handle on the number of illegals who enter their states, and also the illegals who are already entrenched. If that means providing in-state tuition to prevent many of those illegals from simply turning to a life of crime, okay. I don't like it and I don't agree with it, but NH is not Texas.
But as President, Perry would be able to influence immigration enforcement at the national level. In that case, I would want to know that he was intent on tightening the borders, upping enforcement in the most affected areas, speedily deporting arrested illegals and trying to ensure they were not allowed to re-enter the country at a later date, and NOT in any way advocating for amnesty of any sort. As President he would have the power to make these things top priorities.
The rest of the country doesn't want or necessarily need Texas-style provisions for their illegal populations; we want a hammer. I think Perry can give us that, but he's going to have to convince a lot of people that this is the case.

Are you at the U because the folks I know in Utah higher ed really like Chaffetz.
I have heard a fair amount of criticism of Mike Lee from business people and I have also heard some chagrin about losing Bennett's ability to bring home Federal money. I wasn't here before the primary so I didn't form an impression of Bennett, but since that time from what I've observed (and heard) I'd say he has forgotten his Utah roots more than Hatch has (even though Orrin is too Beltway for my taste).
I have a negative impression of Mike Lee. He just doesn't seem that bright to me or effective. More of an ideologue. But it was probably time to lose Bennett anyway.

That is kind of an open question. The only thing I can say about it is that he has (repeatedly) called on the Federal Government to crack down on border security and illegal immigration. He believes (with some justification) that those are things the Federal Government should be doing (which is why he's not so big on them as Governor). I hope this means he would insist on finishing the fence, really enforcing immigration law, and killing any hope of amnesty. I wish I could say for sure that's what he'd do, but I can't.

This is not true.
There is a Texas "Dream" act passed like ten years ago. IT IS NOT THE SAME LAW AS THE FEDERAL BILL LABLED "THE DREAM ACT."
The FEDERAL DREAM ACT is an amnesty bill.
"The Texas Dream Act" as it is called is not about amnesty at all. It is about allowing illegals to get in-state tuition.
Now, you may object to that (I don't like that), but it is ignorant and incorrect to claim that the Texas Dream act = the federal bill called the Dream act.
They just use the same word.

That depends on several things. If Dewhurst wins the Senate primary, then he'll win the Senate seat (since the real race, here, is the Primary, not the general as far as that one goes), so that would mean the Leg would have to go looking elsewhere.
If Ted Cruz or Tom Leppert win the Senate nod, they'd almost certainly select Dewhurst, since he's the Lt. Governor.

He isn't my ideal candidate; Palin would be. But he's about to run and she isn't, and he appears to be a better candidate of the two anyway, and we need Obama gone. I've voted for proabortion candidates in the past, when I thoght that they had other good qualities and I thought that they had a chance.

Perry getting into the race will make heads hurt. And that is what matters.
Any one of our front-runners can mop the floor with the limp Dick we have in the White House now. That means he gets pummeled from all sides and the MFM can't ignore any of our people.
While they chase after Palin, Perry will be cutting down Obama, once they pivot to destroy Perry, Bachmann will beat on Obama. Once they dig up some dirt on Bachmann, Romney will read one of Palin's Facebook posts and repeat it about Obama. Shit, even Gingrich may get in a zinger or two.
Obama is entering a world of pain.

Indies will never vote for a former Democrat. How do you figure?
I think people are going to vote on results more than on ideologies. They will have to be pragmatic and vote for the person who has a chance of turning things around. Perry is wise to position himself vis a vis abortion and gay marriage as a "states decide" person, because even with the constitutional amendment options hanging out there no one in god's green earth believes that Perry would make pushing for those a priority.
Indies can vote for Perry thinking - well, he's more conservative than me, but I'll give him one term to fix the economy and then vote him out.
That's why I hope the primary battle doesn't turn into a competition into who is the most pure conservative. If Palin doesn't run and decides to endorse Perry early, it kind of saves him from having to run "right" in the primary.

Ace, I have lived in Texas as a Kalifornia refugee since 1978.
From what I have seen, Perry is strongest on a secure border. He wants to shut the border to all non-legal crossing. If he could, a patrolled fence would be up now. He is a real border hawk, but not to my level (fence, expulsion, etc.).
Perry realizes that Texas is becoming more, ummm, spanish-speaking over the past several decades. Some of them have been here for generations, others not. IAC, he is dealing with the reality by making many of them 'pubs. Northern Mexico (aka the Rio Grande Valley) now has some state and local republican reps for the first time since, well, ever. In the last election, many switched to the 'pubs.
One thing Perry can do is bring that, ummm, group into the 'pubs. He also has the persona and attitude of a kick-ass leader, that that group likes. Who else can do that? Romney? No. Bachmann? No.
I rest my case.

Come here and say that. And when you get out of the hospital, you can leave and not come back.
We're proud of our State because our State is the only on that ever won its own independence. There's a reason the Texas State flag is allowed to fly at an equal height with the United States Flag- something no other state is allowed to do. There are other reasons, too, but that'll get you started.
As for your comment @480- Yeah, it really sucks when your population is growing so quickly from people fleeing other states that their unemployment is going down, that your own job creation can't keep up. Look at the job creation numbers: only Wisconsin has come close to us- and we're still better by something like double (over the last 2 years) than the next closest state in job creation.

How someone who supports Romney, whom polls show loses voters out of the gate based on his religion (not saying it's right, just saying it's true) can be wringing his hands about some (as yet unestablished) anti-Texas sentiment is beyond me.
As for Romney's economic chops, as I've said before (including when he was my front runner earlier this year), I would be a heckuva lot more impressed by a guy who had actually held a job for the past four years instead of letting his resume accumulate dust. It's the same knock I make on Palin, incidentally, or any of these folks who are out of government and being opinion makers. What Romney did in a state of moderate importance/size four to eight years ago, and what he did at Bain Capital longer ago than that, is not as informative to me as what Perry is doing right now in a state as diverse and large as Texas.
Moreover, anything Romney says he'll do on the economic front has to somehow jibe with his completely unconservative support of government-run health care and ethanol subsidies, two things he foolishly reinforced in recent months. That's where he lost me. We know MassCare hurt Massachusett's economy, but he still won't disavow it.
I would vote for Romney, but I wouldn't be happy about it and he's definitely far down on my list for the primary.

Then why is it that independents voted in droves for repub candidates in 2010? They're finding out that they're Americans first and will vote that way. When Perry announces, Romney's chances are gone. And I hope that pisses you off really bad.

Imagine going back to your home state, which you were a leader of, after bad mouthing it.
#1.) It makes you look like an Ass
#2.) It makes you look weak. Sometimes you have to take responsiblity for things out of your control. it is called "Character."
If you were from Texas and you did that the mouth breathers down there would probably linch you!

Charecter is being willing to admit that something you thought would be good, and reconizing what a giant turd its become.
As for "linching," you mean like signing an executive order, recognizing it was unpopular and when your legislator presented you with a bill rescinding your order you sign it into law? They'd lynch you for that?
Then why isn't Perry swinging from a tree? Oh and go fuck yourself for insulting Texans, and I say that with zero ties to the state.
Why is Romney incapable of saying he does not support the Masscare plan because of what the forced into but still thinks his original plan would have worked?

Ah, but he did say that "Corporations are people", which, to the reporter, was a major gaffe.

I can accept that! You are entitled to your opinion!
"Why is Romney incapable of saying he does not support the Masscare plan because of what the forced into but still thinks his original plan would have worked?"
Because the majority of people in Mass are raving Leftists. It is what they wanted. It didn't matter if Romney was the one in power during that period. If he refused, they would have done it with out him!

Oh, so he really didn't want to sign it. Okay, that part kinda makes sense (not really). But how do you explain the fact that he defended it after he left office? It's not like he has a chance of Massachusetts voting for him if he's the nominee. Here's where your idea completely collapses.
Posted by: Joffen at August 11, 2011 07:06 PM (yCdUw)
Isn't it actually unpopular in Massachusetts now too?

Vic,
"stay out of Texas"
I don't think you have to worry about that!
But the one thing you guys in Texas are overlooking big time...is how Perry is going to be sold to the rest of the country. You guys are all caught up in believing "Your Guy" is the best man for the job....that may or may not be true, but that's not the point.
The person that can actually win, gets the job, not the person who deserves it, or may be the best.
Perry will be sold based on the facts:
#1.) He is extremely socially conservative, or at least pretends to be. This narrows his base not widens it.
#2.) His border record does not work in his favor, whether he did all he could or not. Half will see him as weak on it, the other half will see him as "Anti-Immigration."
#3.) He is from Texas.....and to be frank I have yet to see the evidence that proves Perry is anymore Conservative than Romney. Outside of Texas I think it sticks out like a sour thmub, but apparently you guys down there don't see it.
#4.) No business experience
#5.) He used to be a Democrat!
In combination with even the most smallish of skeletons in closet...it will be a tough sell.

Joffen,
"But how do you explain the fact that he defended it after he left office? It's not like he has a chance of Massachusetts voting for him if he's the nominee. Here's where your idea completely collapses."
And here is Romeny quote of supposed defense. This is about as much as he is talked about it.
Mr. Romney said the Massachusetts law “included a number of things I wish I could do differently.” But, he said: “Over all, am I proud of the fact that we did our best for our people, and got people insured? Absolutely.”
As Romney explained in that interview, the state had an issue that he wanted to help solve. Solving a state issue and keeping it within the state is the proper Conservative position. The problem is, he had a State legislature that overruled him, and he ended up talking the blame for a situation that flat out can not be attributed to him. The facts just don't support it.

1.) Mormonism isn't exactly some socially moderate religion either.
2.) His Immigration stance isn't likely to be all that different from other candidates, especially Romney.
3.) You're discounting a guy solely based on his region and not his record. That's retarded. Also Perry doesn't have a massive socialist grab of healthcare.
4.) I think his business experience is that he has run a ranch, and also that he seems to know governments role regarding business since his state is one that has increased its jobs so much.
5.) So was Reagan.

No....your not getting it! Being a conservative is not an advantage, it is a clear disadvantage in Presidential Politics.
Even though....there should be no question that I want an ultra conservative on in the W.H.

So being a pussy beta is an advantage according to you. Got it. You really are an idiot you know that.

In terms of politics it is. You live in country that voted Obama into power with some pretty big margins. You had better wake up!
Only 30% of the polutiaon is actually paying attention.

And if somebody more Conservative would have been running, they would have lost by an even larger margin.

So you admit that Romney would have been destroyed by Obama in 2008. Nice.

Ace:
Thgis is the most astounding piece of mental gymnastics you have performed recently. The Texas Dream Act isn't Amnesty it just allows illegals to pay in state tutition like Texas citizens. So Perry allows them scholarships, etc.
He didn't do anything to them for being illegal did he? By his actions he denied opportunities and scholarships to American citizens.
Hell no this isn't amnesty. Its Texas amnesty and he'd do no less as president.
Fuck Perry and all those who parrot it "depends on what the definition of is is." This country is in the state it is because of such dishonest men, without the character, integrity, or honor to uphold their solemn oaths.
