Breaking: Perry Will In Fact Announce His Candidacy In SC on Saturday
— Ace

You might have thought, "Gee, didn't we know that?"

Not exactly; his previous word had been that he would "make his intentions clear." Candidates often pre-announce their announcements. (And re-announce sometimes too.)

That kind of silliness.

So this is news.

My only problem with David Dewhurst for Senate is that he's a lawyer.  There are already too many lawyers in the Congress.  We don't need more.

Of course, the way things have shaken out, my choices are two lawyers and a man I suspect is more squishy than John McCain, so maybe I'll have to vote for him anyway.

It's annoying because there's usually no real point to me knowing something (like McCotter running for president) if I'm not allowed to report it. Only big media people are allowed to. So I have non-reportable scoops. (Or I could report them if i wanted to get no more info.) Anyway, since that was already decided, I hope the interview thing remains in place, as nothing's really changed.

You're a complete and total idiot.  Rick Perry is not "Pro-Amnesty" or "Pro-Dream Act."

His stance on Immigration is basically- if you're here to work, and you're not making trouble, we've got bigger fish to fry (I disagree, but it's hardly 'pro-amnesty').

And the bill that people are calling "The DREAM Act" is a bill that says people who were brought here as minor children by their parents, illegally, get in-state tuition rates.  Again, not my favorite, but hardly a mortal sin.  I don't even completely recall if it got passed- I don't think it did, but I lost track of some of those things, so I might have just missed it.

92 >>>Remember when deciding on this person: Perry is PRO amnesty and PRO Dream Act. I'd would never vote for him for those reasons. Just sayin This is not true. There is a Texas "Dream" act passed like ten years ago. IT IS NOT THE SAME LAW AS THE FEDERAL BILL LABLED "THE DREAM ACT." The FEDERAL DREAM ACT is an amnesty bill. "The Texas Dream Act" as it is called is not about amnesty at all. It is about allowing illegals to get in-state tuition. Now, you may object to that (I don't like that), but it is ignorant and incorrect to claim that the Texas Dream act = the federal bill called the Dream act. They just use the same word. So drop that bullshit.

Should be interesting tonight to see the tone of the debate. Civilized? Or another GOP circular firing squad?

All of these Republican candidates should pledge not to attack one another, just go after Obama, there is plenty of ammunition there. Attack him with what you would do to fix the problems he created.

Example: A question about jobs is posed to the debater: Answer with: "During the Obama administration unemployment has doubled since he took office and it looks like it may stay that way due to the inability of the Obama administration to create new jobs. Here is what I would do to immediately create jobs. I would provide a tax credit of 1/2 the first year salary for every new hire for any company, and pay for it by cutting the number of government regulatory departments by 50% in my first year."

Get the idea?

112 Excellent! Now I just have to wait a month to see if Chaffetz is going to announce or not. THE SUSPENSE. The bell Hatch, does it toll for thee? We'll see. Chaffetz made some remarks yesterday in a town hall that had some of my lib coworkers spitting mad today. As one of them so eloquently said, "he should have just stuck to football." Nice and classy! For those interested (hopefully more than just Y-Not): U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz took more swipes at Sen. Orrin Hatch during a town hall meeting Wednesday night but refused to officially commit to running for the Senate Ñ saying his decision would happen "come football season." The congressman, a former BYU place-kicker, said Hatch made crucial voting errors in support of No Child Left Behind and the Troubled Asset Relief Program and simply supported them because he was urged to do so by President George W. Bush and Republican leadership in Congress. "They blew it," he said of leaders during the Republican-dominated years between 2000 and 2006. Chaffetz then lowered the boom on Hatch. "You donÕt have to have 36 years of seniority to get things done in Washington," Chaffetz said. "Seniority doesnÕt matter if you donÕt vote right." But the Hatch campaign hit back, calling the jabs "disappointing" and said Hatch "has a lifetime conservative voting record of 90 percent after more than 12,000 votes." "Jason Chaffetz has spent the past week outside of his district dishonestly and inaccurately running down a fellow Republican," said Heather Barney, spokeswoman for Hatch. "It is disappointing for some to substitute sound bites for an actual record." Chaffetz has been touring the state hosting a series of town hall meetings while Congress is on recess Ñ ostensibly to shore up the landscape before making a run at HatchÕs seat. The Wednesday event drew about 170 people at the Holiday Inn Express and lasted for about 90 minutes. His next town hall is in Ogden. The Utah County crowd was friendly, cheering and clapping at his digs against Hatch and his hard-line stances on immigration, a balanced budget amendment and reduced spending in Washington. In short, his positions were to change the birthright citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment; pass a cut, cap and balance bill; and eliminate government waste. He also said the nationÕs energy policy must be broad and include everything from alternative sources to tapping natural resources. And, to cheers, he called for the withdrawal of troops in Afghanistan and protection of civil liberties. "We canÕt give up every civil liberty in the name of security," he said. The 44-year-old, dressed in slacks and an open-collared blue shirt, spoke for about 15 minutes before opening up the room for questions Ñ many of which centered on the recent debt ceiling crisis and the fiscal health of the country. "We are creating such financial peril," he said. "It is going to be very difficult to turn this ship around." Jay Larsen, a Lehi Republican precinct leader, said heÕd voted for Hatch ever since he got into office in 1977, but next year, he was going to support Chaffetz. His wife, Deanna Larsen, said the same. "ItÕs that line he said Ñ Ôthey blew it,Õ " Jay Larsen said. "ThatÕs the difference now." Chaffetz mingled with the crowd after the talk and, when pressed, said he was still waiting a bit before making an official announcement. But for those marking calendars, BYUÕs opener is Sept. 3. http://tinyurl.com/3snwug9

122 Out of all the research I did on him I never found anything that indicated he was FOR either of those things.

Neither did I, Vic, and I did look pretty hard.

He signed the (stupid) in-state tuition law that was put into motion before he was Governor -- but he did sign it.  That law provides Texas tuition rates for bordering counties in IIRC Oklahoma, some other state(s), and Mexico.  It's not really an explicit illegal alien tuition waiver, in other words.  Still, not great.

And he - as did others - made a non-committal "it's not for us" sort of statement about Arizona's immigration law.  Again, I don't expect governors to critique other states' laws, but I suppose that's a knock on him.

He seems about the same or a little better than my Utah governor on immigration.  Could be better but he could be much worse.

145 BTW, Perry opposes the federal bill called "The Dream Act." the limited amnesty bill. It should be noted that I think this will be Perry's weak spot for conservatives- - Texans tend to have a different relationship with the border than other states. That said, he's called a "border hawk" by Poliitco, but he's not really. It's safer to say that he's "nuanced." Like when he "didn't support Arizona's border law," he said "That wouldn't be right for texas." I don't know if he actually discussed Arizona's need for it.

146 Sorry to not tell you that, but I am told things I am not permitted to say. It's annoying because there's usually no real point to me knowing something (like McCotter running for president) if I'm not allowed to report it. Only big media people are allowed to. So I have non-reportable scoops. (Or I could report them if i wanted to get no more info.) I know this must have been dealt with in another thread, but why can't you report? Do you have to have some form of credentials or something? And if so, how do we donate to get you those credentials?

If they smear him with an anti-LDS label and it sticks sufficiently to concern people here, then I would not be comfortable vocally supporting Perry.  I might still vote for him, depending on the circumstances, but it would be an untenable position for my family (work-wise) to work for a candidate who was "anti Mormon."

You see, these folks would rather Texas just ignore these kids, not requiring them to finish high school, have lived here for at least 3 years and applying for their citizenships.  They would rather those kids just turn to gangbanging and running guns to Mexico instead of being productive citizens, paying taxes, that the U.S. government is NOT going to kick out anyway.  How stupid can they get?

Orrin seems like a nice man and he did some good work on the judiciary committee back in the day, but he needs to retire.  It would be nice if he would retire with some dignity.  I *think* Chaffetz can beat him in a primary, although perhaps I'm overly optimistic because the people around here seem to really like him a lot.

236 @153
It should be noted that I think this will be Perry's weak spot for conservatives- - Texans tend to have a different relationship with the border than other states.

I agree with you, but I don't think it will be a death knell for him.

And it's not just Texas.  It's a regional thing.  We have that problem here in Utah.

I'm opposed to any form of amnesty -- and I'm not even sure I'd like to see a guest worker program -- but it is a lot different talking about that in theory from some state that doesn't have a lot of illegals than it is talking about solutions when you're living with the problem day in and day out.  It just is.  I've lived all over and it is a different kettle of fish in CA or UT or TX than it is in MD or VT or MA or even IL.

240 >>>Question: would Bachmann make a reasonable VP candidate if Perry DID win the primaries? Or would that be too much like McCain/Palin again (sans the douchebag half of that equation)? I don't think so. The fact which Bachmann's supporters don't recognize enough, I think, is that she has no experience in an executive position. None. Like Obama, her experience is entirely in the (back-bench-ish) part of the legislature. Legislatures write laws and vote. This is a completely different thing from running the machinery of government. Liberals now have some buyer's remorse about Obama's complete lack of preparation for this job. I do not think it's a good idea to put a similar inexperienced person up, even as VP. (Palin was a governor, and before that, a mayor.) Plus I don't see her bringing more to the ticket than Rubio.

The first time you get some real shit, do it. It's not like you're getting it twice, anyway.

Palin and Perry split enough votes to allow Romney the win.

Perry and Romney have overlapping fanbases, too, so that three-way would split about evenly—until the ladies, who are anyone-but-Palin, picked a favorite between Romney and Perry. Based on their hair.

Romney's 'do is more "dad's friend who touched my butt at the pool," and Perry's is more "guy I banged on vacation because he said he was a dolphin doctor but it turns out he works in a scuba shop," so Romney'd win.

280 Perry has to walk a fine line with respect to immigration policy here in Texas because there's a lot of mexicans in the state.

Seems to me that, if he gains the national stage, he's in the perfect position to be a conduit for Hispanics in relaying the message of freedom, individualism, entrepreneurship, prosperity vs. the slavery of liberalism and big nanny state government.  I'd imagine that he's well enough liked in TX to be reelected as much as he has been...and he needed Hispanic support to get there.  Now he needs to take that message roadshow across the country and reach the rest of American Hispanics...a group that the left thinks they have a pretty solid lock on.

Not to belabor the point, ace, but in that case, wouldn't Bachmann as VP be beneficial?  For one, it would give her an opportunity to gain some executive branch experience without the pressure of being the actual POTUS.  And it would, I think, hold onto a lot of dyed in the wool conservatives who are going to look at Perry's "HPV vaccine" and "in-state tuition for illegals" stances and see "RINO!!!"  A lot of very conservative voters are really only now getting involved in the voting process, and they're feeling snakebit.  They don't want to give an inch because government has always shown that they'll take a mile.  I can't dismiss those concerns, either, but I'll bite the bullet if I have to.

I want to know how Perry would handle the illegal immigration issue on a national scale.  I agree that illegal immigration is a different animal in border states than it is for states like mine (despite those damn Canadians who come down here and talk all French and shit).  But at least part of that is due to the federal government's utter disregard for its own immigration laws.  States like Arizona and Texas have to do what they have to do to try and get a handle on the number of illegals who enter their states, and also the illegals who are already entrenched.  If that means providing in-state tuition to prevent many of those illegals from simply turning to a life of crime, okay.  I don't like it and I don't agree with it, but NH is not Texas.

But as President, Perry would be able to influence immigration enforcement at the national level.  In that case, I would want to know that he was intent on tightening the borders, upping enforcement in the most affected areas, speedily deporting arrested illegals and trying to ensure they were not allowed to re-enter the country at a later date, and NOT in any way advocating for amnesty of any sort.  As President he would have the power to make these things top priorities.

The rest of the country doesn't want or necessarily need Texas-style provisions for their illegal populations; we want a hammer.   I think Perry can give us that, but he's going to have to convince a lot of people that this is the case.

I have heard a fair amount of criticism of Mike Lee from business people and I have also heard some chagrin about losing Bennett's ability to bring home Federal money.  I wasn't here before the primary so I didn't form an impression of Bennett, but since that time from what I've observed (and heard) I'd say he has forgotten his Utah roots more than Hatch has (even though Orrin is too Beltway for my taste).

I have a negative impression of Mike Lee.  He just doesn't seem that bright to me or effective.  More of an ideologue.  But it was probably time to lose Bennett anyway.

348 I want whatever nominees will make Obama cry. So far that looks like anyone but Romney. I like those odds.

We'll know how serious Perry is about winning when we see who he hires for the campaign.

If anyone even remotely affiliated with McCain's campaign signs on, we'll know he won't win.

Those back-biting nail salon sissies make Frum look like Patton.

And rumor has it that Obama is a stuttering clusterfuck of miserable failure.

Libertarians will hate him because he says states have the ability to order vaccines. End result: I will be even more heartbroken than when Teh Fred! flamed out.

Let's not do that. Let's get a VP candidate who is not in congress, or lets make sure we get one from a State we can absolutely guarantee another conservative winds up in the spot after they leave.

But the best way to do is get an ex-governor who is not in office at the present time.

369 I want to know how Perry would handle the illegal immigration issue on a national scale.

That is kind of an open question.  The only thing I can say about it is that he has (repeatedly) called on the Federal Government to crack down on border security and illegal immigration.  He believes (with some justification) that those are things the Federal Government should be doing (which is why he's not so big on them as Governor).  I hope this means he would insist on finishing the fence, really enforcing immigration law, and killing any hope of amnesty.  I wish I could say for sure that's what he'd do, but I can't.

Ace, you might ask him about that if you get your interview.

This is not true.

There is a Texas "Dream" act passed like ten years ago. IT IS NOT THE SAME LAW AS THE FEDERAL BILL LABLED "THE DREAM ACT."

The FEDERAL DREAM ACT is an amnesty bill.

That depends on several things.  If Dewhurst wins the Senate primary, then he'll win the Senate seat (since the real race, here, is the Primary, not the general as far as that one goes), so that would mean the Leg would have to go looking elsewhere.

If Ted Cruz or Tom Leppert win the Senate nod, they'd almost certainly select Dewhurst, since he's the Lt. Governor.

432 He may get the Nomination, but it will take independents and some of the moderate left to win the Presidency.

Indies will never vote for a former Democrat.  How do you figure?

I think people are going to vote on results more than on ideologies.  They will have to be pragmatic and vote for the person who has a chance of turning things around.  Perry is wise to position himself vis a vis abortion and gay marriage as a "states decide" person, because even with the constitutional amendment options hanging out there no one in god's green earth believes that Perry would make pushing for those a priority.

Indies can vote for Perry thinking - well, he's more conservative than me, but I'll give him one term to fix the economy and then vote him out.

That's why I hope the primary battle doesn't turn into a competition into who is the most pure conservative.  If Palin doesn't run and decides to endorse Perry early, it kind of saves him from having to run "right" in the primary.

He's right on the issues, where Romney is dubious and Huntsman is just flat stupid.

Hopefully he's a rather more aggressive campaigner than T-Paw.

He's got the executive record that Bachmann, for one, does not.

The Texas thing is a double-edged sword; makes a great compare-and-contrast story vs the federal govt, but there's the Bush legacy to live down.

He needs to avoid the chronic foot-in-mouth disease that seems to afflict Cain.

450 a "border hawk" by Poliitco doubted by ace.

Ace, I have lived in Texas as a Kalifornia refugee since 1978.

From what I have seen, Perry is strongest on a secure border. He wants to shut the border to all non-legal crossing. If he could, a patrolled fence would be up now. He is a real border hawk, but not to my level (fence, expulsion, etc.).

Perry realizes that Texas is becoming more, ummm, spanish-speaking over the past several decades. Some of them have been here for generations, others not. IAC, he is dealing with the reality by making many of them 'pubs. Northern Mexico (aka the Rio Grande Valley) now has some state and local republican reps for the first time since, well, ever. In the last election, many switched to the 'pubs.

One thing Perry can do is bring that, ummm, group into the 'pubs. He also has the persona and attitude of a kick-ass leader, that that group likes. Who else can do that? Romney? No. Bachmann? No.

I rest my case.

As for your comment @480- Yeah, it really sucks when your population is growing so quickly from people fleeing other states that their unemployment is going down, that your own job creation can't keep up.  Look at the job creation numbers: only Wisconsin has come close to us- and we're still better by something like double (over the last 2 years) than the next closest state in job creation.

I could give a fuck what the MFM is going to do.  They'll do what they always do.  People are turning to other sources other than the MFM.  That paradigm is dead.  The 2010 elections proved that.

510 He will have the best chance of picking up independents, and probably the best hope we are gonna have at stabilizing the economy for the future.

How someone who supports Romney, whom polls show loses voters out of the gate based on his religion (not saying it's right, just saying it's true) can be wringing his hands about some (as yet unestablished) anti-Texas sentiment is beyond me.

As for Romney's economic chops, as I've said before (including when he was my front runner earlier this year), I would be a heckuva lot more impressed by a guy who had actually held a job for the past four years instead of letting his resume accumulate dust.  It's the same knock I make on Palin, incidentally, or any of these folks who are out of government and being opinion makers.  What Romney did in a state of moderate importance/size four to eight years ago, and what he did at Bain Capital longer ago than that, is not as informative to me as what Perry is doing right now in a state as diverse and large as Texas.

Moreover, anything Romney says he'll do on the economic front has to somehow jibe with his completely unconservative support of government-run health care and ethanol subsidies, two things he foolishly reinforced in recent months.  That's where he lost me.  We know MassCare hurt Massachusett's economy, but he still won't disavow it.

I would vote for Romney, but I wouldn't be happy about it and he's definitely far down on my list for the primary.

530 So where was Texas Governor Rick Perry when the news broke that heÂ’s officially running for president? Perry was at the ABC Austin affiliate KVUE taping a two-way with a New Hampshire news station. When he emerged in the newsroom, a reporter asked him about the AP wire announcing his candidacy. When he was shown a printout of the AP story, Perry proceeded to sign and date it in all capital letters. Perry will make his candidacy official in a speech at the RedState Gathering in Charleston, South Carolina Saturday before setting off to New Hampshire and Iowa to round out the weekend. The announcement of PerryÂ’s entrance into the race came hours before his rivals participate in a debate in Iowa. -------------------------- *sigh* I love this man.

But yeah, I worry the population shifts there will screw up the rest of the state. Luckily most of the encroaching ex-pat hippies head to Arizona or Colorado and leave us be. Vic,

"stay out of Texas"

I don't think you have to worry about that!

But the one thing you guys in Texas are overlooking big time...is how Perry is going to be sold to the rest of the country. You guys are all caught up in believing "Your Guy" is the best man for the job....that may or may not be true, but that's not the point.

The person that can actually win, gets the job, not the person who deserves it, or may be the best.

Perry will be sold based on the facts:

#1.) He is extremely socially conservative, or at least pretends to be. This narrows his base not widens it.

#2.) His border record does not work in his favor, whether he did all he could or not. Half will see him as weak on it, the other half will see him as "Anti-Immigration."

#3.) He is from Texas.....and to be frank I have yet to see the evidence that proves Perry is anymore Conservative than Romney. Outside of Texas I think it sticks out like a sour thmub, but apparently you guys down there don't see it.

#4.) No business experience

#5.) He used to be a Democrat!

In combination with even the most smallish of skeletons in closet...it will be a tough sell.

 Joffen,

"But how do you explain the fact that he defended it after he left office? It's not like he has a chance of Massachusetts voting for him if he's the nominee. Here's where your idea completely collapses."

And here is Romeny quote of supposed defense. This is about as much as he is talked about it.

Mr. Romney said the Massachusetts law “included a number of things I wish I could do differently.” But, he said: “Over all, am I proud of the fact that we did our best for our people, and got people insured? Absolutely.”

As Romney explained in that interview, the state had an issue that he wanted to help solve. Solving a state issue and keeping it within the state is the proper Conservative position. The problem is, he had a State legislature that overruled him, and he ended up talking the blame for a situation that flat out can not be attributed to him. The facts just don't support it.

1.) Mormonism isn't exactly some socially moderate religion either.

2.) His Immigration stance isn't likely to be all that different from other candidates, especially Romney.

3.) You're discounting a guy solely based on his region and not his record. That's retarded. Also Perry doesn't have a massive socialist grab of healthcare.

4.) I think his business experience is that he has run a ranch, and also that he seems to know governments role regarding business since his state is one that has increased its jobs so much.

5.) So was Reagan.

Posted by: buzzion at August 11, 2011 03:37 PM (GULKT)

Thgis is the most astounding piece of mental gymnastics you have performed recently.  The Texas Dream Act isn't Amnesty it just allows illegals to pay in state tutition like Texas citizens.  So Perry allows them scholarships, etc.

He didn't do anything to them for being illegal  did he?  By his actions he denied opportunities and scholarships to American citizens.

Hell no this isn't amnesty.  Its Texas amnesty and he'd do no less as president.
