BREAKING: Trump Not Running For President
— DrewM

First Huck, now Trump passes on a run. Kind of sad when the best news for a party's presidential field is when people don't run.

Oh well. Small favors and all.

After considerable deliberation and reflection, I have decided not to pursue the office of the Presidency. This decision does not come easily or without regret; especially when my potential candidacy continues to be validated by ranking at the top of the Republican contenders in polls across the country. I maintain the strong conviction that if I were to run, I would be able to win the primary and ultimately, the general election. I have spent the past several months unofficially campaigning and recognize that running for public office cannot be done half heartedly. Ultimately, however, business is my greatest passion and I am not ready to leave the private sector.

Full statement here

His poling collapsed after Obama released his birth certificate but I think he didn't like the taste of politics he got. From getting smacked around at the White House Correspondents Association and the reaction to some of his speeches, I think he found politics wasn't a world he could simply bully around.

I honestly thought if he ran he'd wind up doing it as an independent like Ross Perot. Since that would only have helped Obama, I'm glad he's sticking to real estate and TV.

Good. First Huck, then Newt kills his own campaign in the first week! Now this! It is sad that the best news is who isn't running. Let's hope that Trumpy Dumpy doesn't get sad about not being in the press 24/7 and go the Ross Fuckwad Perot route.

5 So, why does this primary feel a lot like a reverse of 1992?

The incumbent seemed so strong in 2008/9, but now looks to be a fairly easy mark against a strong challenger - but who the heck is there to challenge him?

66 didn't NBC threaten to replace him yesterday?

I'm a fan of the show and trump.  The show is trump.  Without him, who's going to watch?  the consensus among those who watched with me yesterday was that they wouldn't watch if Trump was gone.  They also were surprised that NBC would have the ability to "replace" him.  Everyone thought, since he is essentially the show that he should have rights to the program, I mean, it's him, all him, you watch for him and his reactions, so you'd think he would have more security.

Ah NBC, what does rush call them, oh yeah, "state owned media"

67 Sounds like Trump plagiarized Huckabee's announcement. Both are convinced they'd each win based on current polling, and despite the public's entreaties to run, will nevertheless withdraw to endeavors with which they are more passionate.

And they each used the past several months to boost their public profiles and TV ratings. Gold diggers from the onset. Who knew?

Otherwise, we could end up with some guy who has no executive experience at all in the White House.

Sheyah, like THAT could ever happen, huh?

113 I guess Romney's the nominee.

To paraphrase Voltaire, if Huckabee did not exist, Iowa would invent him.

The person who benefited most from Huck's withdrawal was Cain, IMO.  Cain advocates Fair Tax, which is what Huck rode to victory in Iowa in the first place.

My prediction (which you can quote and mock me for if I'm spectacularly wrong) is that Herm Cain will win Iowa.

116 @ 44: I dont want to be called racist, but there is no way the republicans win with a black candidate on the republican ticket.

1) the left would uncle tom the crap out of the poor guy.

Cain addressed this issue over the weekend.  I sent the link to Ace because it was full of WIN!

Here it is:

Herman Cain sounds off on race, a debate win, and the need to simplify government

"I spent the first 60 days of my time at Godfather's listening, to figure out what we needed to do," Cain says. "It wasn't complicated: get back to basics."

"Number one, we had too many products on the menu. We had gotten away from our core product.  We had too many crusts.  We had the original Godfather's pizza crust, we had the original Godfather's pizza, and then we had three imitations that looked like Pizza Hut, Domino's, and Little Caesar's.  I got rid of the three imitations, and we got back to focus on the one we were good at."

"Number two, we simplified the operations, because if you simplify the operations, you make it possible for the people in the restaurant to execute exceptionally well every day.  When you've got too much stuff, they can't execute."

"Number three, we instilled in the company that we could, in fact, win again."

Cutting an organization down to its core mission, sharpening the focus of its employees, and then re-energizing those employees -- it's a strategy that has obvious resonance for a man who wants to run an overextended and deficit-ridden United States government.  "So in your view," I said to Cain, "America has too many crusts?"

"Yes!" Cain exclaimed, breaking into a long laugh.  "America has too many crusts!  And we've got to simplify things, clarify things so that we can achieve real progress."

"You get it!" Cain beamed.

...

"Here's my theory," said Cain, leaning forward in his chair.  "Let's talk about the current field of Republican candidates.  They can't go after Obama as hard as I can because they're not black.  I think that, either subconsciously or deliberately, they are being coached to not say it a certain way, that you're going to be labeled a racist and the liberal media is going to try to bring you down, because they still want to protect their precious Obama."

Cain believes his audiences are a different story. "The voters, they hear my message first, not 'He could take it to Obama,' because they are more concerned about stopping Obama than taking it to Obama," he explained.  "This is what I'm hearing and this is what I'm feeling.  And the race card is going to be short-lived if Herman Cain gets the nomination."

But wouldn't liberals and Democrats still find a racially-based way to attack Cain?  They certainly found a way to attack Clarence Thomas, the black, conservative Supreme Court justice.

"They're going to come after me more viciously than they would a white candidate," Cain responded.  "You're right.  Clarence Thomas.  And so, to use Clarence Thomas as an example, I'm ready for the same high-tech lynching that he went through -- for the good of this country."  Cain smiled broadly.  "I'm ready for the same high-tech lynching."

Romney stood by the work of his governorship as the best that could be done in that state at that time. He defended the individual mandate in the Bay State as a prudent, useful and constitutional experiment, one of many that ought to be undertaken in the states.

He of course denounced the overreach of Obamacare and laid out the many and key differences between his reform package and Obamacare's vast power grab.

Critics scoffed at these distinctions, which is to scoff at, among other things, the U.S. Constitution.

I'm not so sure. Prolonging it was working to their advantage. Polling was persistent, but low. The journolists created a litmus test for all Republican candidates (just like evolution). Then Trump picks up the cow flop that the respectable people steer clear of and heaves it around, and polling moves. Obama finally coughs up and does what the peasant do, and the issue deflates. The Dear Leader had to react.

Question: if Trump had never brought it up, do we believe that any of the runners or wanna-bes would have raised this? Most of them are already on record as saying they believe that he was born in the US and that is was a non-issue.

191 Eventful week.

Huck's out, Trump's out, and both Gingrich and Romney are in the process of making themselves unelectable due to one flip-flopping and pulling a McCain while the other is standing fast on a really bad idea.

Looks like the current field of serious and semi-serious candidates is Santorum, Cain, Bachmann, T-Paw, Daniels, Gary Johnson, Huntsman, Gingrich, Romney, and Ron Paul.

Those last five are pretty much dead men walking.

Giuliani and Palin could still jump in the race at some point and the lack of a true front-runner could make either a strong contender.

Winner! Stop and look back at it. Trump makes a big stink, throws all sorts of crap at Obama, then goes to an event to get slammed in person, and he just takes it? Makes all sorts of serious allegations against Obama, claims he has top people looking into things in Hawaii, and yet when Obama releases what you have to admit is a laughable document, Trump doesn't have his people analyze it and report what is wrong with it? He just drops out of sight, then comes back to say, I ain't running, and slinks back underground so the weasel on his head avoids sunlight?

Which case is now easier to make, Trump and Obama were working together, or Trump was genuine in his criticisms?

242 More likely is that Trump found out how badly Republicans (and/or folks who go counter to the liberal establishment Media's agenda) and decided he liked it better when he sucked up to liberals and lent them money and stuff.

Bummer. He didn't take any shit from reporters. They put words in too many of the GOP candidates' mouths and those candidates (and even presidents, if memory serves) just let it happen without an argument. He would have made the debates better. If just by simply showing a few people how to stick up for themselves when it matters, so be it. But he would have made the debates edgier. And they need to be this time. Time to quit confusing decorum and respect with acting like a fuckin pussy when if you disagree with a fucking liar whose assinine governance concepts with destroy the country you love. You can bet your ass he wouldn't address major diffferences in governing philosophies by saying  "my friends" to people who just lied to him or about him and his wife (and the economy and education and energy and our defense etc etc.).

BTW Herman Cain is trading higher than Newt on Intrade
Well I would think so, especially after Newt just shot his own legs right off the campaign. Newt had enough to overcome. His idiocy knows no bounds however and he just couldn't help himself. The prick didn't even make it a week before sabatoging his own run. Go away Newt.

yes, that was my first thought, also.  But to the TMZ, entertainment weekly crowd who get a twice weekly email from the campaign reminding them how important they are to the prez, they think it's huge.  they don't know how politics works.  They don't know you can say anything and do nothing and blame it on someone else.  They just know that their buddy, BO, is a great president and they will vote for him for another 4 years.  The republicans aren't getting this at all.  they seem to be going further and further down the rabbit hole.  Yeah Sarah gets it.  Christie gets it. Santorum, after his lovely experience with hillary on stage at the debate, learned it and gets it.  Newt doesn't get it and mittens either.  Newt reminds me of the about to be ex wife of the multi millionaire who is crying and shouting "I can be anything you want me to be, anything, just tell me what you want and I'll be it, but don't leave, please don't leave".  Ever since I learned that the federal government can't force you, constitutionally to buy health insurance, but the state's can, I have despised mittens cause health care in MA is a disaster and it has mitt romney's name and imprint all over it.  And, deep in his heart, he thinks it was the right thing to do.  He's not a republican.

As for this comment:

"Especially not one who uses pizza crust as means to explain whats wrong with our country....my god...if the american people are that stupid that you think this is how they need things explained..."

Uh, alligators in moats ringing any bells here? How about 58 states? Asthmatic kids needing breathalyzers? The police acted stupidly? Let's cut oil company subsidies to reduce the price of gasoline? 253 You people are thin skinned.  You get so upset over a comment about Mehgan McTwinkie and you think you are ready to deal with the press and the dems this time around?

2008 was the feel good election for them.

2012 is the Win no matter what election and all bets are off.

The economy will be the deciding factor. That doesn't bode well for Barry. Barring a miraculous and fast turnaround of the economy or unless the GOP picks someone really divisive, they win. Barry has lost the Indpendents. Pawlenty or even Daniels might not fire up the base as much as Ryan or Christie. But they don't have to. Most of the people who actually vote will weigh the choices. T-Paw would probably appeal to most of those people vs. Obama V 2.0. The dem base will of course vote for him. But he won't have the enthusiasim of last time, nowhere near it. So he loses on that front, the independents and people who supported him last year that won't vote for a Rep, but will stay home.

The field is rapidly narrowing. RuPaul, Newt, and the Pothead from NM are not really contenders. Romney and T'Paw are the front runners, at least until Daniels' wife makes up her mind that she's going to let her husband run, maybe. Palin will not run; 2008 was too much for her. Christie will not run; it's not his time yet. Ditto Rubio. Ryan will go for the open WI seat in the Senate. I don't know about Cain. He might be electrifying but the fact that he has no political experience is a mark against him. Business experience != political experience.

that show is all trump.  Without him a lot of people just wouldn't watch.  Makes you wonder how he got himself in a position, knowing that the show is all him, where NBC could threaten him.  Means somehow he screwed up on the contract, either his lawyer screwed up or he screwed up, cause really he should own that program.  He may realize that now.  I prefer to think of Mr. Trump as taking the high road and not being ron paulish and just announcing every election cycle.  I think he truly entertained the idea of running but the attack directly from the pres, supported by the press, I think shocked and saddened Trump.  He might have realized he can do a better job of helping the republicans from the sidelines.

270 I have noticed that the republicans are sitting back thinking they will be able to use the economy as their excuse and it will insure a win.  I wouldn't do that.  Cause presidents have a sneaky way of being able to fix stuff right around election time.  You have to run as though the economy was great, otherwise, your 'ace in the hole' may fizzle out.  Now, if he can't prop up the economy then maybe it will have a little impact but by then he'll have made everyone feel so guilty for wanting to have a nice house and a good job when the rest of the world is suffering, they'll all vote for him anyway.  It's a mess and you guys aren't seeing the mess.

So whats to stop them from having gangbuster reports right before the election that quietly get revised and unreported by the press as usual two weeks later?   Oh thats right their transparency and honesty...

First of all. T-Paw is his nickname in MN. I didn't make it up. Secondly. The state up until 2010 never had Reps control either house of our senate. The Dems, which in MN are called DFL (Democrat Farmer Labor) have had a strangle hold on the legislature for the last 40 years. He tried unalloting their budgets and the idiot judge called it unconstitutional. He held his ground against an entrenched Dem machine and did well. Did I like all his decisions? No, of course not. But he managed to hold the line on many things in a hostile enviroment. IS he the next Reagan? No, not even close. Is the sexiest candidate ever? Nope. Can he beat Jugears McFuckup? Yep. BTW Barry's bounce is over. If that didn't help him what will? 12% unemployment? More debt? Another war? high inflation and gas prices? Yea, sure. you keep telling yourself that they win.

Did i say sit this one out?  And you left out where i said run a woman or a hispanic to make their "historicness" equal or trump Obama's "historicness".  I think you are just a bit too dense to get the sarc there since that was regarding running a black man to counter obama's blackness and nueter the racism charge that was discussed earlier.  You seem to like to reduce the discussion to a few simple points that fit your narrative so you can make some self serving retort.

If you can read words that are not there, that may be part of your problem.

Why would i volunteer for the RNC?   Have i said i am republican?  Besides that, they are part of the problem.

and what's with the quotes around "us"?

Clearly you don't have this figured out.

But trust me on this.  "You guys" are screwed no matter what you do and by the time you figure out what to do, its going to be too late.

Ummm.. yes.

I think you are just a bit too dense to get the sarc there since that was regarding running a black man to counter obama's blackness and nueter the racism charge that was discussed earlier.

That's okay.  I think you are too childish and stupid to rise above identity politics and recognize that it is not the color of a man's skin that is what truly matters.

Of course the media is going to attack whomever the Republicans run.  So your solution is to specifically deny a black man the opportunity to run, simply because you want to protect "us" (snicker) from the big bad media and their mean words.

How's this for media spin, genius?  We specifically do NOT select a black man as a candidate, as you are suggesting, then endure yet another campaign of slurs about how conservatives and Republicans are racist for not allowing a black man to be on the ticket.  Gee, that ought to work out much better!

As I look around, the only person I see here applying a racial qualification for office is you.  I wonder why that is?

You seem to like to reduce the discussion to a few simple points that fit your narrative so you can make some self serving retort.

Orrrr..  and try to stay with me here.... I am reducing your silly argument to it's logical conclusion to expose it for just how ridiculous it is.

No thanks necessary.  It's what I do.

Why would i volunteer for the RNC?   Have i said i am republican?  Besides that, they are part of the problem.

GASP!!
You mean you're one of those hyper-pure Conservatives who refuses to compromise and who  believes that he is truly too good for the rest of us???!!!?!?  Wow.  I am truly stunned.  I never would have figured that out from your constant and repeated attempts to separate yourself from "us."

BTW, just to answer you other question, that would be the reasons for the quotes.  I would have thought that someone of such truly incredible intellect would have figured that out all on your own.  Guess you are just too wrapped up in your truly deep political analysis ("run a woman or a hispanic or you will lose) to have picked up on that.

But trust me on this.  "You guys" are screwed no matter what you do and by the time you figure out what to do, its going to be too late.

Oh well.  Thanks for trying to help though.  You are truly a gift that keeps on giving.

yawn

You aren't gonna win with Cain or West.   Get over it.  You wont out black Obama.   Which is hillairous that you are intent on trying because he is about as un-black as you can get.

The fact of the matter is you lose because no matter what you do the media is going to work against you.

You could run jesus and do infomercials where he raises the dead on live tv and they would still be against you.

You lose.  End of story.

You cant win the fight against the msm.

not my problem if you cant deal with it.

I still never said give up on the next election no matter how many times you claim it.   I said give up on fighting the media (not in so many words)

And if you think preventing the indoctrination of the kids isn't a problem you need to deal with, you are a bigger idiot that i thought, which is really big.

Enjoy 4 more years of barry.

297 Herman Cain is a big supporter of Open Borders (i.e. "hate Whitey, drown him in lots of Mexicans") and the individual mandate. Do you honestly think that Herman Cain will put aside racial solidarity to run on GOP principles, when he's already a McCainaic in Open Borders, support for George Soros Open Society, and the individual mandate for ObamaCare? [Beta Male Mitch is also a supporter of those things.]

Herman Cain is just a Black McCain/Daniels, who wants to be a good loser to Obama. Newsflash: GOP will never win Blacks, or even more than 2-3%, because "Hate Whitey" appeals to Blacks all across the spectrum. Black people would rather import 100 million Mexicans who hate THEM to "drown Whitey" than compromise to keep AA around for another fifty years in a White majority, special-privileges Black society. It is truly a "Wrath of Khan" social view held by nearly all (90% plus) Blacks. Mexicans are not much better, committed to "Reconquista" and turning America into Northern Mexico.

The smart play is to get about 80% of Whites to vote for your candidate. Group interests, racial identity (without of course every actually saying it aloud) and so on. Convince 80% of all White voters (critical target: College Educated White women) that 4 more years of Obama means they're tossed out on the street so Blacks and Mexicans can take their jobs in Government, Education, Media etc. a process already under way. Make their fear of being tossed out to feed Obama's anti-White spoils coalition greater than their innate hatred of White Beta males (which accounts for about 90% of Behavior of White College educated Women).

FEAR in other words. There is plenty to fear.

But that means NO BETA MALES! Ever. No Timmy down the well, no Beta Male Mitch, no Huntsman. No Palin (College Educated Women detest working class White women more than White Beta Males). No Black or Hispanic guys unless he's young and hunk (Rubio!) If Santorum can butch it up, get tough, go with him. Or Rudy, he can act tough guy (his three marriages are an Alpha male plus, not a disaster for the key demo of College White women).

There's your path to victory. Forget Blacks and Hispanics, they're locked in to "Hate Whitey" or "Take Over America and make it Mexico." Get 80% of Whites (by avoiding Beta Males or non-Whites who are not hunkadelic) and there you are.
