"But so far as liberalism goes, this is a pretty devastating graph"
— Ace

So says Ezra "Expanding the welfare state decreases deficits" Klein.

I think Jonah Goldberg linked, for some reason, this old post, containing the single greatest Daily Kos "diary" entry ever.

The hot tears, they do flow.

52 There are a lot of little cheche posts. Here's one --------------------- I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of Barack as I just did a moment ago. He sat down with me on the sofa and (as calmly as he could) tried to explain to me why the Republicans want to starve little children and take Social Security away from the elderly in order to give coporoate jet owners wads of cash. He tried to keep his voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessnes were just too much. I could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, "Barry, I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore..." When he finished my lower lip started to tremble and my eyes began to fill with tears, "Michelle" he said, "why are the Republicans doing this to the country?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. I just fell into his arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes. He had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think itÂ’s too much, but seeing the strength in Barack's voice helped me to get through. ---------- http://thevimh.blogspot.com/2011/07/michelle- obama-channels-her-inner.html

62 We oft talk about the power of the MSM but when I see a graph like this or the ones about gun control,  I think it shows the limits of media power.  The media can full press only a few issues at a time,  When they switch to a new one, the worry over previous "issues" rebalances more in line with what peoples experience with reality supports.  Recently, wimmin and race issues have very much taken a back seat to gay issues.

The media would love to full press big labor, homeless, wimmin, race, gay, class, war, environment, etc... issues all at once fear-mongering people into supporting special privileges and government expansions, but c'mon you can only fit so much mockery and talking points into a 20 minute episode of this weeks, "The Office."

88 @ 85 Just the other day people here were calling hawii five-o one of the most conservative shows on television....

Whether the Five-O story lines are "conservative" or not, when the production crew starts dissing WWII veterans (if the KOA story is true as the account says, and I have no reason to disbelieve it) in order to get their "product" out on time, they can go fuck themselves. Repeatedly.

That's not really true.  If the candidates would keep to clean, substantive, conservative attacks on each other and not defame each other, we have plenty of time.  We become a team at the convention.

I'm sorry to hear about your job and other woes.  Lots of us have gone through it or are going through it.  It blows.  Hang in there.

In the fannish part of my internets life, I have to put up with people being horrified, utterly horrified, that an American show with cops and military guys in it would portray the cops and the military guys as heroic and in the right.

105 " So 9/11 bought "big government" about 10 years of good will, but it's gone now. Interesting. Yes. Yes it is. In addition to PNAC telegraphing their desire for a "new Pearl Harbor" 9/11 allowed nanny-statist neo-cons to sac-suck the treasury dry. See, to be a neo-con is to be a warmonger is to be big government tax and spend liberty abhorring asshole. War wanking wedgie begging buttheads lousing up the economy and Leninizing the land to and fro. A Ron Paul administration would put America First. Small government. States rights. FIFY.

I donÂ’t think IÂ’ve ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago.  She just couldnÂ’t understand why the President would be going to Iraq when so many things are wrong in this country. “DoesnÂ’t Mr. Bush Obama care about us anymore?” she asked pitifully.

I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why the President seems to be abandoning his country.  “Honey, I think his boss, Mr. Rove Soros, sent Mr. Bush Obama out of the country to the golf course in order to keep himself out of the newspapers.  You see, he wasnÂ’t sure if he was going to be arrested impeached today or not, and so he planned Mr. BushÂ’s Obamas trip golf game ahead of time just in case…”

I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult – the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much.  I think my daughter could tell something was wrong.  I found myself at such a loss for words – nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore.  I finally had to admit, “Honey, I just donÂ’t know – I donÂ’t know whatÂ’s going on in this country anymore…”

When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, “Daddy” she said, “why are the Republicans doing this to the country?”  Well, that was it for me:  I finally fell apart.  She just fell into my arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes.

For once she had to comfort me and get me back on my feet.  Sometimes I just think itÂ’s too much, but seeing the strength in my young daughterÂ’s voice helped me to get through.

115 105 Y-not, Just a simple questions   Are the candidates keeping it clean?

Well, being a Perry supporter, I'd say "no."  He was accused of all sorts of nonsense by Bachmann, Romney, and helpful pundits like Michelle Malkin.

But that's the hand we were dealt.

However, I do not think that anything good comes from putting an artificial time-frame of two months or whatever for us to achieve unity.  The act of voting is not about building consensus or even for building unity.  It's about expressing your preference to the candidates and also to the party.  The time for building unity is at the convention.

I've been told for months now I need to shut up and get behind Mitt (not saying you're saying that, btw).  Well, that's making me disinclined to vote for Mitt.  I'm going to vote my conscience in the primary and donate to the candidate I prefer until he wins or drops out.

Both guys make some interesting points.

125 #52  Well said!   We will have to pull together and it is going to be tough even with a very good candidate of our dreams,  which most of us won't get.

So, as pull the cattleprod etc. says, let's quit fighting.  Unless you are in Iowa, the caucuses are going to be decided by what the people in Iowa say, not us.

And might I add,  the media is yanking our chains and manipulating this election for all it's worth.  Just pick who you like,  support them,  and then accept whoever the winner ultimately is.

Obama must be defeated!

130 Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. - C.S. Lewis

So this poll shows that people "get" this.
