Buzz: And Now Christie Is, Supposedly, "Carefully" Considering a Run
— Ace

Supposedly.

Read Nice Deb's link for a round-up for the chatter, which seems to have been provoked chiefly by Paul Gigot's belief that he must be thinking about it.

But note that Paul Gigot offers no claims that he knows anything factual -- his belief is based on what he imagines is going on behind-the-scenes.

19 I don't think Christie will get in. For one thing, he's got the same lack of governmental experience as a certain half-term governor from an extreme northern state. For another, he's seen as way too comfortable with some very liberal positions.

I think he's smart enough to realize that this is not the year for that.

Navycopjoe- the difference is that Chris Christie hasn't been teasing about it for 3 years now.

For the love of all that is holy, let this not take place. He's fine where he's at. Let him stay there and do good. The next republican primary race is going to be messed up enough without this. Most of the ones currently in it are disposable. Perry will win out in the end (I believe) and if the others get torn up, no great loss. Let's not drag any of our better, more useful leaders into this internecene conflict.

Only incompetent buffoonery will lose to Obie this time. Let's just get this done, and spend the next 4-8 years building a better bench for the next go around.

28 The difference between Christie mulling a run and Palin endlessly teasing is that Palin has been toying with the idea for what...a year? And she still hasn't committed. Christie, if he runs (and he won't) will make the decisdion quickly and with authority.

Let's face it, the only decision Palin ever made quickly was the one to bail out of the governor's office.

And please, criticize away. I liked Palin, but I am just sick of her schtick. It's gotten old.

That would be good fun indeed. Unless, of course, somehow they found another silver-tongued deceiver, of minority race, who was actually able to primary out Obie. As long as Obama is primaried out by another black person the Dems will come out to the good of such a trade. They only suffer if a light skinned person primaries Obama.

61 The difference between Palin and Christie is Palin has spent 2 years being coy about it. Palin keeps the interest up herself while refusing to make a decision. Christie has said no several times. It's always others claiming he's thinking about it, never him.. It's one thing to change your mind, it's another to not be willing to make it up at all.

Christie hasn't been crashing other people's parties (Mitt's announcement speech/Ames), going on campaign style bus tours or giving speeches in IA and NH.

Christie also hasn't been criticizing candidates while refusing to say if he's in or not.

Other than all of that the Christie/Palin stuff is EXACTLY the same.

Yeah, given our need to undo decades old programs that are seen as untouchable, why in the world would we need a guy who has done that in one of the bluest states in the country. And he did it with Democratic buy in and oh yeah is at about 50% approval.

Who needs that? What use could that be in a budget and entitlement reform fight?

Oh yeah, why would the GOP want to nominate a guy who probably wins NJ, makes a victory in PA a better than 50/50 proposition and even puts NY in play?

106 I wouldn't cheer this guys and gals.. Christie has some bizarre positions on coals plants and global warming.. He's about simpatico with Obama on that. I believe he mentioned that he was against ever building new coal fired plants because it added to global warming.. no shit.

He's another believer in a 'mystery energy' of the future that will suddenly appear out of nowhere to replace coal and oil.. like Obama. Not good. Let him be first without power if he loves that stance. He's also an open borders guy. Easy to do when you live in the NE.. Live in CA or AZ? You'll be ready to hang yourself after hearing this crap. 12% unemployment in CA (not a typo), and we're being overrun, with Mexican nationals running our legislature passing all these 'free shit for illegals' bills by the bushel while citizens are 3 months away from being homeless. Shit is really bad here. We've got no sympathy for ANYONE who is open borders. They are suicidal. The rest of the country will soon find out how destructive a flood of uneducated, socially protected, welfare leeches are on our country. This is why CA is fucked. Not rocket science folks

Of the 20 million++ illegals in the country, half of them live in SoCal alone.. if not higher. Christie isn't a conservative.. He made no brainer points about pensions and became a youtube hit. thats about it.

Northern states are losing districts to the South as more retires and job seekers make their way down. Obama won his first term as a civil rights landmark. With Barbour, maybe the BBQ twang factor was too high. But Perry is just right. Texas is more like CO, NM, AZ and even CA. He's not going to be a dream conservative but he's damn good on a lot of issues and he's the best we have with the economic ones.

Nah, the guy brings nothing to the game.

Posted by: DrewM

This is funny. Drew is in sneer mode, and openly says that Christie will "probably" win the state of which he's the governor. Goodie. And now we have prospects in PA and NY? Really? Any polling to substantiate this? How is this any different from the 'lack of reality' that dreaded palin supporters show?

And do we have any polling indicating that we don't slide in the South? it is very telling and very useful to know if a candidate (ex: Palin) cannot command the base, and may alienate independants. It'd be kinda nice to know something about this where Christie is concerned.

Also: If this rumor is true, what does this indicate? Is Christie thinking that even a ham sandwich ould beat obama now, and since he's consumed several dozen (daily) it's go time? Or is this a reaction to the latest round of Rasmussan polling showing Perry slipping? That since no one seems to be closing the deal, Christie might as well try? If so, is he our savior, or a dreaded opportunist (even though he deosn't wear a skirt)?

And, yes, I know that Christie is a big Fiscal Conservative, but his polices have not yet borne fruit. I'm relatively certain they will, but let's leave him where he is until then, okay? And, other than his fiscal conservatism, tell me where he's conservative? He's not nearly upset enough about terrorism, he's weak on the border, he doesn't mind laws outlawing guns. I'm not sure where he is on the pro-life/pro-abortion scale, and I don't know where he stands on other other social/national security issues.

But, the available research of which I am aware indicates that "It's better to come from a broken home than to live in one" is not true. I think it hinges on the degree of brokenness. Our counsellor advised us years ago, when our kids were little, that we should divorce now if it was inevitable as the older the kids get the more negative the effects on them become. Everyone is in his/her own particular situation and has to make the best decision he or she can, but good gosh divorce really screws up the kids.

168 Yeah, my dad has taken some steps, opened his own accounts, become real active, he just retired last September, and he is, despite the divorce, happier now than I have heard him in 30 years.

We suspect that my mom is suffering from the effects the administration of long term prescription pain medication (about 20 years now, roughly). She is pretty doped up and, as I barely understand it, that can have effects on cognitive functions.

154, Indeed. My folks stayed married but didn't sleep in the same room or even say more than abotu 5 words a week to each other from the time I was 16 until dad passed some 15 years later.

Looking back I think I would have preferred they divorce. They might as well have been since I had to deal with each of them independently like they were.

It warped my view of marriage and family so much I didn't marry until I was 27 and was afraid of becoming a dad for another decade.

On the plus side I do think the experience made me try harder to be a good husband and father.

We've seen so many kids screwed up by a parent who decided she or he wasn't "happy" anymore. Well tough shit, noone has a "right" to be happy. Now, if we were yelling and screaming at each other constantly or beating the shit out of each other, then divorce would be the lesser of 2 evils. There is no perfect candidcate coming to save us. As much as I love Christie's willingness to fight the public employee unions, he will bleed support from purists because of some of his positions.

When a candidate is on the sideline, we project our hopes and dreams on him/her and they are exciting. Look at Bachman's rise, and then Perry's. Both of these candidates enjoyed high initial support based on high hopes. But rality bites and hoes fade in actual campaign where the record is exposed and the misstatements pile up.

At some point, we are going to have to get real about the candidates we have and stop pining for greener pastures. Christie is not the white knight (no racist!) that purists are looking for.

As for sliding in the south, find me a southern state (or any state that went red last time) that is suddenly going to go for Obama if Christie is the nominee.

Perry is going to have a hard time competing in the Midwest (not impossible, but a hard one) and will be a non starter in the Northeast. Christie won't be a walk in the midwest but he'll do fine and he at the least forces Obama to play defense in states that Perry can't touch.

I'm not saying Christie is ideal but he's by far the one candidate we have that forces the Democrats to play on their own turf.

He can say he's pro-life and win election in a blue state, but he's not going to enforce it obviously. He has likely made subtle statements to that effect. As for court appointments, he appointed Sohail Mohammad, a former lawyer to Mohammad Quatanani with links to Hamas, to the bench. Christie's response? "This Sharia law business is just crap … and I’m tried of dealing with the crazies.” Not really feeling it.

North Carolina went for Obama last time, so that's not what he's referring to.

Furthermore, NC went blue because of 1.) massive African-American and youth turnout that almost certainly won't be replicated this time around (the novelty and enthusiasm is gone); 2.) a major swing by educated professional classes in the Research Triangle -- this is Christie's core constituency.

If anything, a Christie candidacy probably puts NC more securely in our column than any other candidates. You really need to understand the demographics of these states a little better.

B. I responded to your assertion about what states he could deliver. Which you ignored.

As for sliding in the south, find me a southern state (or any state that went red last time) that is suddenly going to go for Obama if Christie is the nominee.

I already noted that different Republicans candidates poll differently. my point was that we don't yet know how Christie will play nationally. You ignored that.

Perry is going to have a hard time competing in the Midwest (not impossible, but a hard one) and will be a non starter in the Northeast. Christie won't be a walk in the midwest but he'll do fine and he at the least forces Obama to play defense in states that Perry can't touch.

We don't know this. We can guess at it, but until you see credible polling involving Christie, these are guesses, not credible assertions.

I'm not saying Christie is ideal but he's by far the one candidate we have that forces the Democrats to play on their own turf.

As for the doing it for the kids part, I had a different take on it. I believe that, as kids, it doesn't matter what we're told or how our friends' houses are, what we live with is what we believe is normal. I did not want my kids to think that what they saw going on in our house was normal. I'm not saying that what you, Dave and willow, have decided to do is wrong. You're doing what you believe is right and only you know what is best for your kids.

Ima, that happens not to be the case. There are reams and reams of studies showing that divorced kids are more likely to be depressed, abuse drugs or alcohol, get social diseases, drop out, end up in broken relationships themselves, etc. This is even true if you compare divorced kids to kids whose parents are married but fight. Divorce is bad news. Don't kid yourself, if you get a divorce it *will* damage your kids.

Posted by: Dave at September 19, 2011 12:29 PM (Xm1aB)

216 Nothing any of these people do in a primary debate matters very much, particularly this early on when Perry has had to tack right (or reassert his conservative bona fides on certain social issues) because Bachmann is still in the race (and Palin may deign to enter it).

If we would just chill and let it whittle down to the two candidates who are relevant (Bachmann having eliminated herself from contention in a way that I certainly hope folks are not asserting Perry has), then we'd see a very different dynamic.

Since Romney has already begun the mealy-mouthed "Obama is not a socialist" crap and has never really disavowed Masscare, I have real concerns about him being McCain 2.0 in the general. Perry, in contrast, has taken Obama to task during the past couple of years as governor. I would much rather run Perry against Obama than Romney.

If Christie does enter the race, he will simply be too liberal for a large fraction of the party. Personally, I like him. I'm from his neck of the woods and I love his style. But if Perry has already been smeared with the closet dhimmi thing, there is simply no way in god's green earth that Christie will escape unscathed.

We certainly can talk about candidates. We can also make a distinction between what can be proven, what is likely and what is a wild assed guess. And we can also discuss whether not having a lock on your own state is a lead item on your presidential candidate dream list. Gore failed to carry Tennessee or Arkansas in 2000. Christie may not carry New Jersey. Even if we decide to be charitable and skip over it, I rather doubt the Dems will.

This is absolute crazytalk. Obama's approval rating in West Virginia is THE LOWEST OF ANY STATE IN THE UNION. Literally. West Virginians would sooner vote for Jacques Chirac than Barack Obama in 2012. The Republicans could nominate a Mike Castle/Arlen Specter ticket and take WV by 10%.

223 he's DOA unless he cleans up his Dream Act defense The states cannot enforce the border or deport the illegals who flood across the border. They have to deal with a population that is here for good. In-state tuition in TX requires numerous qualifications, and it only covers about 1% of the population. It is what the state chose to do, and I think it's a good idea. You have fewer people dependent on government and contributing to society instead. If you really want to end illegal immigration, instead of terrorizing communities with ICE raids or building an expensive wall, get rid of jus solis. No more citizenship just for making it over, problem solved.

I think that many of us, you included, are underestimating the turnout of disgruntled Republicans, disillusioned independents, and newly-unemployed conservative Democrats. We are also overestimating the turnout of hard-core Democrats.

I have yet to meet a Republican who is not energized to vote against Obama. I have yet to meet a Democrat who is excited about the prospect of another Obama term.

We have this tremendous built-in advantage: Obama is a SCOAMF. But not just jokingly; he really is one. Let's not lose sight of that.

235 230 Well she's gone. Took the baby with her to her grandma's. Now it's just me here. I'm pretty sure I will regret this until the day I die.

I am sorry, Joffen. Hang in there.

236 Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo (NJConservative) at September 19, 2011 04:53 PM (LH6ir) -------- Hahaha see? This is what I'm talking about. Yes.

237 Well, it is certainly silly to say Christie would carry NY, NJ and PA without polling.

Yes it would. Fortunately for me, I never said that.

238 I'll sort it all out everyone. Thanks again for all the helpful tips. It's a shitstorm but I'll get thru it. It's all good. (Obviously these are just empty words right now, but you get my point)

239 @244 A little something that gets me through the day sometimes, and old family saying.... "Life ain't for pussies."

240 Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure.

241 "Oh yeah, why would the GOP want to nominate a guy who probably wins NJ, makes a victory in PA a better than 50/50 proposition and even puts NY in play?"

Since among the many things you don't know is the difference between "probably" and stating something as a certainty , I'm done with you.

Have a nice life.

243 Did Christie make an announcement? No? Hmm...

244 Since among the many things you don't know is the difference between "probably" and stating something as a certainty , I'm done with you. Oh, waah! But there's no such thing as "almost treason." Inflammatory rhetoric and nuance and shit.

245 I heard a rumor that Reagan's bones are coming back to life and running for president as a lich. Just a rumor. Best write a blog post about it.

christie will split the gop. anyone who can win in the northeast cannot honestly

win the potus. i am born and raised in big d and have lived the last 20 yrs

in the berkshires selling antiques to weekenders from nyc and jersey.

republicans in the north have nothing in common with the south. In texas

christie would never be invited!
