CAC's Election Projection- September 2011 Edition
— CAC

Here is my first official projection for the 2012 Presidential election. I will upload one at the beginning of each month through August of next year, and weekly starting the first week of September. Keep in mind that we are well over a year away, so a plethora of events can alter this.

If the election were held today, President Obama would lose by a margin of 54% to 46% to an unnamed challenger. The electoral vote would break down like this: AoS Projection for 2012 Presidential Election- September 2011 ed

The Republican would get 290 electoral votes, the President 217, and 31 are undecided. Florida, North Carolina, and New Hampshire are all likely Republican gains, with polling in all three atrocious for the President, thumb-on-the-scale data out of the Tar Heel State by Particularly Partisan People notwithstanding. New Hampshire has been the most fascinating state out of these three for me, as Gallup has found it has become a Republican state for the first time in years in terms of party ID. In fact, per Gallup, it is now one of the more Republican states in the country. Change, indeed.

Obama has become downright radioactive in Pennsylvania, and has been for several months now. The eternal tease for Republicans, it turns red for the first time in 24 years. I know, many of you will argue about fraud in Philadelphia until you are blue in the face. But if they couldn't steal it at the last minute last year from Pat Toomey, before the Republicans gained pretty firm control over the state government, I doubt they can pull that off next year.

Wisconsin remains a point of interest for me and other people who pull numbers out of their ass election analysts who have been watching the recent elections there for clues as to what lies in store next year. Governor Walker seems to have recovered in his popularity, with a recall effort against him now polling in the negative and positive press about the results of his budget finally hitting local media. Feingold's decision to steer clear of any elections next year and Thompson's willingness to jump in point to a cautiously confident Republican party in the state and a less-than-excited Democratic one. How that translates for the Presidential race remains to be seen.

Hat tip again to John E for the new design.

Except Toomey wasn't running against a black man in Philadelphia in 2010.

4 A few weeks ago Baseball Crank put up a map (in a post about Perry) that was similar to this except he seemed to have Florida firmly red.

I think jumping ahead of ourselves a bit and thinking about VP selections for a possible Rick Perry would suggest that Pawlenty or Romney, rather than Rubio or West, would be good running mates since they have a better chance of pulling the upper midwest.

Posted by: Y-not at September 05, 2011 05:47 AM (HH31x)

5 Y-not - I love that idea. I'm sure we'd never see, but could you imagine a VP debate with Biden vs Romney or Pawlenty? It would be a thrashing (either way, even if Tim had to give Slow Joe a nice, wet-noodle type thrashing)

15 Well, Fox News Channel just put up an astonishing poll showing Obama trouncing Romney by something like 54% to 36%, and Perry, even worse. Does anyone know what the HELL is going on at FNC? They have utterly jumped the shark, and now are running clearly skewed polls featuring samples that must be something like 90 percent Democrat.

16 Awhile back a commenter at No Quarters blog suggested that Obama would "drop out" for health reasons, and that the Dem ticket would be Cuoma/Christie.  It seems possible with Chrisitie, as he seems to be sucking up to Obama.
BTW, Michigan may be more red than you think.  Stabanaugh is having lots of negative ratings here.

22 Assume we lose Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada (likely), but take back North Carolina and Virginia (equally likely).  I'll believe New Hampshire when I see it, but in any event it's only four EC votes apportioned in accord with the popular vote percentage.

We would then have to win Florida and Ohio in order to prevail.  If we lose either we are done.  If we win both FL and OH and also win Pennsylvania, the Socialists are done.  If we lose PA we can still stitch together a victory but it will be tight.

This map and hot cheerleader titties are great to wake up to.

As for Fox, they need to keep you watching, so they will keep calling the election as a nailbiter until all the votes are in.  The Murdoch/UK tabloid runs deep over there.  And that's a good thing, it'll keep us from becoming complacent, and ensure as many Republican voters get to the polls as possible.

29 Pennsylvania isn't decided in Philly, it's decided in the three "collar counties" around Philly, which once were solidly Republican but turned Democratic in the last two Presidential elections. I live in one of those counties and I believe that two of the three will be solidly Republican next year, unless Republicans nominate Sarah Palin. We took back two of the three House seats in these counties in 2010, and Pat Toomey carried all of them, though a bit more narrowly than Tom Corbett did. The only way Obama carries Pennsylvania is if he dumps Joe Biden and puts Ed Rendell on the ticket with him. He would be very smart to do that, but I don't think he is smart so he won't do it.

A clue to how Ohio will trend in the 2012 election is the outcome of the referendum this November on SB5. Senate Bill 5 limited collective bargaining for state employees, fire and policemen, teachers, etc. - public employee unions.

The propaganda from both public employee unions and trade unions is going to get pretty thick and heavy. This will indeed be a test of strength and attitude. If Ohio votes down SB5, the outcome of the vote on 2012 is in doubt (for Republicans). If SB5 is upheld, then maybe the attitudes in the state have turned the corner.  There is a strong undercurrent of backlash against not only the public employee unions but also the UAW, which is important as Ohio is second only to Michigan in UAW membership/employees.

34 People are probably tired of hearing me say this, but I live in Florida and Obama has zero shot at winning this state unless something drastically changes. 2010 was a total wipeout statewide (both in congressional races and state house). Scott's approval has been slowly recovering as our unemployment moves in the opposite direction as it is nationally and the budget balancing has been garnering good press. Obama's polling is horrific and continues to get worse. He doesn't even visit Florida anymore. That's how bad his internals are.

37 Pennsylvania is about 1-5 points more Democratic than the country as a whole in Presidential elections (and has been since the 1950s). I doubt we'll be the state that puts the GOP over the top, but we'll go red if the popular vote margin is 54-46 like CAC is projecting.

I had a former worker at the Moraine, OH, truck plant tell me that GM shut down the plant because it wasn't a UAW shop.  The Moraine plant had a different union and UAW was out to get them because of concessions the union in Moraine had made.

As a former union representative, I think that public employee unions need to be outlawed.  They have devolved into organizations that protect the least productive and/or most troublesome employees.

I don't know where the Florida numbers are coming from.

I live in Florida and have been doing some consulting for a while. There is no 'lock' in Florida. Obama is not popular, but no one in the state is really popular. This attitude does not favor the incumbent, but it also doesn't necessarily favor each candidate equally.

As I keep reminding people, Scott barely won. Rubio won more handily, but he also benefitted from a three way race. Still, I think he would have had at least a eight to ten point win in a two-way race.

The electoral politics of Florida are changing with the rapid growth of non-Cuban Hispanics, particularly in central Florida. Traditionally, these voters have had low turnout in elections. Even with this low turnout though, it is rapidly changing the politics of central Florida and incrementally, the state at large. Add this to continued growth in Duval and Dade/Broward County, and the electoral landscape in Florida is much tougher for Republicans than overall approval numbers would make it seem.

The economy of Portland is miserable, and the economy of the rest of the state is Great Depression II. Best of all, the Leftists running Oregon have placed their bets on "green" industry, especially - wait for it - solar companies. I assume all the solar companies will be out of business a year from now, given how things are going. The white liberals in Portland have checked their "voted for a black guy" box, and fair percentage of them are unemployed, too. A question we pose here is "Is there a single person in the United States who voted for John McCain in 2008 who is going to vote for Barack Obama in 2012"? On there other hand, there are a lot of people who voted for Obama who are going to sit on their hands or vote for the other guy. If Perry is the nominee, the Left will play up the cultural contradictions between Texas and Oregon, and discuss the economy as little as possible. I don't think that will be enough to drag Barry over the finish line.

Texas Governor Rick Perry won't attend the Palmetto Freedom Forum as scheduled on Monday.

The governor's press office confirms Perry will return to Texas following a town hall meeting on the coast to address wildfire problems in Texas.

Perry was scheduled to attend Senator Jim DeMint's forum of Republican presidential contenders in Columbia Monday afternoon.

Actually Richmond isn't that bad; a couple of downtown precincts waaaay over balanced by its conservative burbs. The other problem area is the very black Newport News, Hampton, and inner Norfolk areas.

81 Keep in mind that Maine is currently waging a huge battle over its new congressional district lines. The GOP (which controls the legislature now) is proposing a new map that would make the 2nd district a strong possibility for a Republican pick up. Since Maine (like Nebraska) awards EV's by congressional district, it is quite possible that the GOP could steal another EV from New England. Here's the GOP and Democratic proposals for new maps: http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/File:Maine_Congressional_Map_Options.jpg Posted by: Mayhem at September 05, 2011 10:40 AM (ljbxn) Maine either goes all-in R (doubtful at this point but still a possibility) or all-in D. Even making one of the congressional districts 'competitive', the last election saw both Democrats cruise to greater than 15 point margins. There would have to be some seriously creative gerrymandering afoot to split the electoral votes.

I was glad and surprised as well. That said, I think most people here are glad that he doesn't have to run in 2012.

I've been working on the same problem in some polling that stumped most firms in 2010. We thought Republicans should have been much closer in some states that we lost in 2010 (like Nevada). It is really difficult to predict voting pariticipation among Hispanic voters, pariticularly Hispanic voters between 18-35. They were severly undercounted in 2010 in some states, but in others they were counted correctly yet voted more than expected.

If counts are correct and there is a traditional voter turnout among Hispanic voters, I think the Republican candidate (if either Romney or Perry) would win Florida by 2-4%. If we experience what Nevada and some other states experienced, it would be a true toss-up.

Obviously, much can change in a year, but it is pretty damn close.

One thing I have noticed since Osama Obama began his presidential run is a curious inability on the part of conservative "pundits" to judge him as what he is, which is a self-centered, vengeful man steeped in revolutionary rhetoric and radical Islam.

He is neither a "politician" in the sense we're used to nor a patriotic American, and I do not consider it outside the realm of possibility that as the tides of war (electoral, that is) turn against him, he will resort to scorched-earth tactics.

It would not be the first time in history that a "leader" took the "apres moi, le deluge" approach.

One of Obama's strengths is that he is contending, in large measure with the Ed "Poppin' Fresh" Morrissey school of political niceness, which puts on blinders and judges the opposition as nice people who just don't believe as we do but will play by the rules anyway. That is why both the Chicago Jesus and Holder are still in positions of power.

I think the martial law scenario is unlikely but, as with any potential disaster, it's better to be prepared than blindsided.

Name one state that would cancel it's elections (remember there are others offices on the ballot) that's not solid blue. If you can't do that, what's he going to do? Physically occupy every precinct in every red or purplish state? With what army? Not the Army-they simply wouldn't do it. Not the FBI/ATF/those sorts-there aren't enough of them. Not his urban rabble-shutting down the cities doesn't help and out in the suburbs we have our own police/citizenry that can see to protecting the vote.

Is it not possible, even likely, that, when push comes to shove, the same minorities who (in fairly small numbers) seem disenchanted with the stuttering clusterf*** of a miserable failure will, when push comes to shove, go with the "help a brother out" mentality?

We're not talking about a mere mayor here. We're talking about the President of the United States, and Osama Obama's "historic first" status will play strongly.

I hope so but again, the national media was not trying to toss each other out of the bear pit to give Dinkins a blowjob on air.  The support he is losing amongst the minority community is most likely the business class.  I don't think they would be the ones playing "flash mob".

Posted by: sven10077 at September 05, 2011 11:15 AM (AEIYh)

Somebody here at the HQ mused that the flash mob phenomenon would make a great paradigm for disrupting the polls. Pay some kids off, have a community organizer contact them by Facebook, Twitter, and texting, bus them out to the suburbs and have them mob the polls. MSM runs it prominently because it's exciting; suburbanites are intimidated and stay home; SCOAMF wins by razor-thin margins in key places in key states. Yes, I'm paranoid, but these days paranoia is just a little closer to the truth than it used to be.

139 Is it not possible, even likely, that, when push comes to shove, the same minorities who (in fairly small numbers) seem disenchanted with the stuttering clusterf*** of a miserable failure will, when push comes to shove, go with the "help a brother out" mentality? Not if they perceive him to be an "embarassment" or "failed to help them out". In which case they won't vote against him, but they won't help him either. There will not be a HIGHER number of minorities voting for him 2012 than in 2008. There will, however, be a higher number of people voting against him in 2012. The question is this- is the latter number enough to outweigh 2008 O enthusiasm?

These people have telegraphed what they are going to do. They have written books about what they are going to do. This isn't all about Obama. He is the hood ornament on the truck of progressivism. This has been in the works for a half century or more. The biggest mistake some of us make is to believe that somewhere in the Government is a mechanism to stop him. There is not. Under his direction the Government has overtly and with malice damaged our economy. Can we defeat it? YES WE CAN! But it will take sacrifice, hard work and a realization that they will not play fair. I think violence on a mass scale is a real possibility.

163 Somebody here at the HQ mused that the flash mob phenomenon would make a great paradigm for disrupting the polls.

There are a couple of problems with this. The bulk of voting in the suburbs, at least here near Chicago, happens from 6:30 to 8:00am as folks are on their way to work, with another smaller spike from 4:30 to 6:00pm as they return home (mainly because they come in groups to/from the trains). The early spike is going to be too early to get the yutes out of bed and out here. The later spike is folks who have been at work all day and probably won't have heard of earlier shenanigans-though you could show up and interfere with them.

The other major problem is one folks that spend all their time in urban areas have trouble wrapping their heads around. The suburbs are a pretty big place. You could have a planned disruption here or there, but if it wasn't in my town, I'm not going to be even mildly intimidated by it. And once it's happened once or twice, we'll have police out at the precincts preventing further 'artistry.'

Fun to speculate, but keep in mind that to declare martial law you need the military to enforce it.  They swear their oaths to the Constitution, not to the Commander in Chief.

It helps to actually know individual policemen rather just considering them in the abstract as nebulous union goons. I'm sure enough in my town.

Keep in mind, it wouldn't even be necessary to have police saturation of all suburban precincts to stop the flash mob disruption. Once word got out that some departments were being mobilized, the mob crowd would have to start making risk/reward evaluations for further operations. Which means identifying/scouting target precincts for police presence. Which takes time-and they only have the day of the election to work with. Also, the rabble aren't exactly the most courageous lot-or they wouldn't be 'mobbing' in the first place.

Based on this electoral reality the short list for the Veep nomination must include Portman and Kasich, McDonnell and Rubio and Scott. The fraud has finally caught up with the scammers and taking on more and more debt cover up unpayable debt has run its course.  Nobody believes it any more, essentially.  The market has called on the scams and frauds and is now serially demanding proof that the banks can fund their liabilities.  It is doing so by driving down equity prices, forcing the institutions into a corner where their cash flow inadequacy is exposed.

219 204 What you say is factual. However, beginning next March or so I'll be packing.

It's tougher for women to carry. Our clothing generally doesn't hide it well. I'm hoping to have open carry in Florida in the not-too-distant future so that I don't have to worry about going to jail if my blouse should shift and someone catches a glimpse of it. Presently, I don't carry.

There's always purse-carry but, damnit, I'm not giving up my designer bags. Instead, I've been thinking about going to a leather-smith and having a pocket added to them.

Would that even be legal?

I don't think there will be violence if Obama wins, unless it's the kind of celebratory violence that follows the NBA championships sometimes.

Didn't a hell of a lot of Mexicans flee Arizona for New Mexico after Brewer started tightening the noose? It seems I read that somewhere.

Been wondering the same thing.

We saw in 2000 how just one contested state turned into a big hairy deal which lasted for nearly 2 months and ended up in the Supreme Court....... A few well-placed flash mob events at polling sites could throw several state elections into 'contested mode'.

229 i can't find my debit card half the time in my bag......i'd hate to have to locate a gun in a hurry.......i have a special pocket for my debit card but damn if i ever put in there..........

I'm thinking a simple leather flap added to the body side of the bags. With a zipper. Something I could put my hand into when walking out of work at night. Of course, my bags are so big now, I could just carry it in a zippered pouch inside my bag.

Hmmm. That might work.

I can't carry on my person at work anyway.

231 the current times are unlike anything we've seen before.

Um, the times today and tomorrow ARE unlike anything in living memory. The disorderly unwind of 30 years of fake growth through debt is not something any of us has lived through. A President who openly advocates political violence against real Americans ("get in their faces", "punish our political enemies") is not something we've seen before. The ongoing restoration of the caliphate as its monuments are built in our lands (and folks like DrewM bashing candidates who seek to stop it undercutting our survival in favor of religious freedom for savages) is not something we've seen before.

Decent folk have every right to be on edge these days.

233 215 Kensington,

1) you keep acting like Bambi is "just like all the rest" he is not he is hiding his transcripts because he is either a c student or you can see he was very openly a borderline communist by his course selection

2) it is not unhealthy that the party out of power is borederline paranoid about the sanctity of the election process it is healthy I am not talking about doing a LARP of American Civil War the sequel I am however talking about being ever vigilant as regards their usual baseline cheating on the other side of the aisle and the extraordinary cheating like the NBP's antics in Philly.

If we all are hyper-vigilant he won't be able to do a soft voter intimidation routine it'll be hard.

I think the more realistic scenario is he loses and whether close or by a wide margin he shows more work in his last 70 days via EOs and executive branch games as he can.

236 224 A woman friend just had a special holster made she that can move from a pocket in her bag to her person or the console in her car. There are some solutions out there. A woman ought to be able to find someone willing to help carry safely.

237 That's something else that bothers me, when people amongst our own ranks roll their virtual eyes at those that are not excessively worried but at least disquieted they are ignoring the fact that the level of collusion between the media allowing bambi to hide his thesis transcripts and history rises if not to conspiracy definitely a preference cascade in that community we have little power to overcome on the macro scale so we have to subtly chip away at it.

The United States does not need an overt government controlled media right now to suit Obama's purposes they are worse than Pravda and in the bag for him in many ways.  The Soviet media was not as firmly invested in the sanctity of any individual Politburo member as the US press is Ogabe after Uncle Joe.  The media grasps that by ignoring the glaring questions in his life in '08 they are going to suffer if he loses by a wide margin for at least a decade.

Their power to undercut the next GOP president will probably be diminished by their mad overreach in the Ogabe era.

238 Here is my first official projection for the 2012 Presidential election. I will upload one at the beginning of each month through August of next year, and weekly starting the first week of September. Keep in mind that we are well over a year away, so a plethora of events can alter this. Right... a plethora of events to include: 1. Obama's Stimulus Packages FINALLY kick in and the economy suddenly bursts into a full speed ahead growth spurt. 2. Against all reason, the private sector suddenly decides that Bambi's regulations and Obamacare are the perfect excuse to start hiring millions of people, reducing the unemployment rate down to less than 6 percent. 3. The world suddenly decides Obama is a truly effective leader, and respects us again. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Obama is SO Boned. (Unfortunately... so are we... )

the dirty little secret is TARP and the Stimulus have already blown their wads.

240 Sven, all I'm saying is that there absolutely will be an election next year, and if you realized that some element of the out party always fears otherwise, you'd realize that it's a silly concern.

And I'm so confident in this I'll wager $5,000 against anyone who wants to bet otherwise.

241 245 Kensington,

You having 5 grand to risk at all speaks well of the barackcovery, I guess I am cowed....

I'd gamble 10-100 not a grand.

I am about 95% certain things will go off as they usually do and if/when bambi gets his ass handed to him he goes full tard on EOs and granting pardons that make him look like a Thug who got into the national Honor Society somehow....

I'll bet THAT scenario to you for a hundred cuber bucks.....

There will be riots and violence.   Count on it.

245 From Politico:

"
Hoffa Threatens GOP At Obama Event: "Let's Take These Son Of Bitches Out"

Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa had some profane, combative words for Republicans while warming up the crowd for President Obama in Detroit, Michigan on Monday.

"We got to keep an eye on the battle that we face: The war on workers. And you see it everywhere, it is the Tea Party. And you know, there is only one way to beat and win that war. The one thing about working people is we like a good fight. And you know what? They've got a war, they got a war with us and there's only going to be one winner. It's going to be the workers of Michigan, and America. We're going to win that war," Jimmy Hoffa Jr. said to a heavily union crowd.

"President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. Let's take these son of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong," Hoffa added.

Obama was due to speak shortly after Hoffa addressed the crowd."

249 Folks, I keep trying to tell you that Colorado tends to vote the candidate and not the party. The last statewide elections went demo because the reps managed to field a horrible candidate for governor and a less-than-stellar candidate for senate. Even then, down ticket reps did pretty well. I foresee no way that Colorado goes blue with a reasonably credible rep presidential candidate.
