Cain To Hold Presser to Address Bialek's Accusations This Afternoon
— Gabriel Malor

It'll be interesting to see if Cain talks about specifics or keeps it at the level of general denials that he used for the other claims. As far as the primary election goes, Cain has been well-served by general denials thus far.

To be sure, Cain's response to the original Politico article and the subsequent events was totally unprofessional. It had all the telltales of someone with a credibility problem. His statements were inconsistent, evasive, and vague. His demeanor suggested a problem ("I enjoy flowers like everybody else."). He confirmed the facts of the original Politico article, even as he denied the whole dust-up as a media smear. And he made a solid attempt at destroying Curt Anderson's career in order to point the finger at the Perry campaign, and then was forced to backtrack on his disgraceful slur.

The amazing part is that this horrific fumble worked, at least for some people. Cain supporters rallied and so did many other GOP voters. I'm paraphrasing from Limbaugh's show yesterday, but a caller had this to say about the accusations:

All I know for sure is, the more accusations they throw at Cain, the more I know he's our man.

She went on to say something about being trained not to believe the media. She is, of course, not alone in distrust for the MSM and we've certainly spent enough time documenting the "Make Believe Media" here.

But look how far she went. Limbaugh's caller has a rock-solid conviction that the accusations are false, even though she has very little objective evidence with which to evaluate their accuracy.

It's like this. While we were criticizing Cain for utterly failing at keeping the story from blowing up, Cain was actually muddying the waters. He was making it more difficult for the casual observer to understand what this story was about, right down to the basic facts. Politico and the rest of the legacy media also helped muddy the waters, by printing perhaps a thousand articles about ever teeny facet of the allegations.

So to the casual observer, the person who claims to Pew pollsters to be "reasonably well-informed" about an issue, there is a lot of complexity, a lot of back-and-forth, a lot of "maybe yes, maybe no" to this story. The casual observer also tends to know about a story, but they may not know whether it's accurate or not.

With all of this complexity, evaluating the accuracy of the accusations and Cain's denials, hell, even parsing just which news reports Cain has confirmed (like, e.g., the Politico story) and just which reports Cain has denied, has become very difficult for the casual observer.

When things get so complex, we naturally look for proxies to take the place of an actual evaluation of the evidence. One of the most common proxies is source. The source may tell us whether or not to believe the content.

Here, Cain and Politico made this story very complex. Even here at the HQ, (definitely, better-informed than the casual observer) it's been difficult keeping this whole thing straight in light of all the different accusers, Cain responses, legacy media counter-responses, and Cain sur-responses. It's complicated. It's hard to tell who is giving accurate information. So the casual observer is going to turn to a proxy. And in this case, they turned to source.

For the casual GOP voter, like the lady on the Limbaugh show, it's easy to say: look we know not to trust the media, we've been trained not to trust the media, (and here's the leap) so we choose to believe that Cain must be telling the truth. That's great for Cain in the primary election; those folks circle the wagons. They assume that Cain is credible and that all these folks that the media is propping up can't possibly be credible. After all, everyone knows that the media is out to get Republicans and out to get true conservatives most of all. This explains why Cain's support did not erode much among the GOP primary voters.

Of course, folks not conditioned to reflexively distrust the MFM, like the average swing voter and even many Republicans, are going to run in the other direction. They're going to see Cain as the incredible source, particularly in light of the fumbled response and his obvious self-interest. That leaves the media and the accusers as more credible than Cain's blanket denials. Thus, the swing voter is going to tend to believe the media has been accurate, at least in the absence of any way of actually evaluating the accuracy of the charges.

Cain can change that sentiment among swing voters and the Republicans he hasn't convinced yet by getting specific and by dropping the obfuscation. Assuming that he hasn't actually done anything wrong.

Maybe that's what he'll do this afternoon at the presser. But keep in mind that if he does speak with complete and specific detail, he will make it easier to evaluate the accuracy of the claims. He might want that, if he's been completely honest about never having harassed anybody "period, end of story." On the other hand, if he actually has done something wrong, he'd be better off, at least as far as the primary election goes, keeping things complicated.

Comedian Bill Cosby, certainly no conservative Republican by any stretch of the imagination, was widely liked and admired by America's black community....

....until he publicly stated that he was tired of seeing subliterate black children standing out in the streets, screaming, cursing, dropping the "N" word every five seconds, with their pants at their ankles and their dignity in the dumpster.

Immediately after Cosby's public statement rebuking the deplorable state of American black pop culture, he was besieged with mulitple accusations of sexual misconduct.

Curious, isn't it?

No one had ANY complaints whatsoever with Bill Cosby....

....until he suggested that young black people pull up their pants, learn to speak English, get a job, take education seriously, and stop calling each other "ni**er" every five seconds.

8 He must have done it because a woman says he did it.

GUILTY.

Sheesh. First, anonymous nobodies allege non-facts.

Now, we get some actual woman with a claim of attempted groping and boorish behavior from almost 20 years ago.

And there are plenty of people on the right who just shrug and say, "See, must be true!"

Cain can't possibly disprove these "charges." The women and media can't possibly prove these allegations. Ergo: GUILTY! GUILTY! GUILTY!

The rush to judgement from both sides of the aisle is astounding. And it's all flowing in the same direction. You are all tools.

Forgive me for not believing their every charge against conservatives.

I've seen what they did to George W. Bush, who certainly was NOT Hitler.

I've seen what they did to persecute Newt Gingrich.

I've seen what they did to both Clarence Thomas and Robert Bork.

22 Many of the people I run into that believe Cain do so for a simple reason - his responses look natural. He isn't triangulating; he isn't using a media expert and campaign manager's response; he isn't 'sticking to the playbook'. He is flailing around like someone surprised by the accusations that is being a little emotional, a little confused, and not caring about 'optics' so much as reacting to unexpected allegations that are a shock as they occur. In other words, acting like a normal guy who is innocent, not like a politician, liar, or someone who is guilty and has been working on answers (but I repeat myself).

32 The MFM asked Newt the other night "doesn't character matter in a president." This was specifically directed at selecting a republican president.

The above is all this is about and it is starting to work. There is enough to judge Cain on the merits regardless of 1, 2 ,3 ,5 , 1,000,000 accusations. There is no burden of proof on an accused in this country, only on the accuser. To date we have no proof and Cain can be ruled out by other methods, such as poor policy knowledge or grasp foreign interests, focus on those.

Please, Please, Please stop giving this story air and helping the MFM continue to destroy all our candidates with this distraction. Newt got it right in his response lets try to be equally intelligent.

36 You use words like "trained" and "conditioned" to describe people who instinctively distrust anything the MSM has to say. Presumably, you don't distrust them, right? Are you yourself not capable of making rational judgments or are you lacking in basic logic skills? There are tens of thousands, at minimum, absolute rock solid cases of media distortion and deceit concerning virtually every possible subject they cover. Political stories are the ones they deceive about most often. Using your own individual logic and powers of reasoning and deduction, you as well, should distrust the MSM--unless that is you are lacking in these areas.

Cain, the whole enchilada, just like any other candidate, deserves scrutiny.

Speaking as a voter, it's offensive being approached by Cain begging for financial support to protect AND promote his campaign on a 999 platform that didn't earn my approval.

What's stupid? Given the track record of corrupt politicians, folks still cling to the facade of charisma, despite being conditioned to reflexively distrust every candidate. Another sideshow distraction in the Republican Nomination  Circus.  Infighting, name calling, bickering, backbiting, and now a "high tech lynching" has this race running in circles. All to the benefit of the Democrats, who are watching from the sidelines, making notes and probably having a good laugh.

The candidates need to focus on the issues, work to further the message of failure of the current administration, and promote the solutions they offer to to repair a broken ecomony and create the conditions for business to create JOBS!

Ultimately in the race for the presidency, the candidate who presents the best arguement on boosting this failing economy, and the best plan to turn business loose to grow and add private sector jobs will win the election next November.

This canidate will be Mitt Romney. Sure, it has been fun to speculate about the others running and possibly wnnning the nomination, but mostly I suspect they are running for second spot, or high level positions in the new administration. The ruling Republican Party establishment wants Romney. The premise is that he has the best chance to beat Obama, and I agree with that prediction.

So Candidates, stop the infighting, coalesce and present a strong case for a new administration. Focus on why and how the Republican Party will lead this country to new prosperity. Give facts and details, even examples. And obey Reagans 11th commandment!

61 @ 48 Romney is a non starter for many conservatives and he should be. Assuming that conservatives will just get inline again as the establishment jams another lib candidate down our throat is a poor bet this time.

Romney can't break 25% because he is no different than your average democrat, if conservatives wanted a democrat we would vote for one. In all seriousness I would rather see Obama re-elected than Romney, both are going to destroy this country it is just a matter of how fast between the two.

Given the above, 4 more years of Obama showing the public what real socialism is about is preferable to a slow ascent to socialism lite where the public would be slowly inoculated and would, imo, wake up to late to realize what happened. This to me is a case of a needed shock to get out of our comfort zone in order to fix things. Tough love so to speak. I know in my circles many conservatives who feel this way about Romney. Those circles are small but that is the prevailing wisdom where I live.

62 #55,

You acknowledge remembering what happened to Bill Cosby.

Who did it?

Do you think social conservatives were behind it?

Neither do I, as it would make no sense whatsoever.

Cosby said something the Left found unbearable, and they set out to destroy him.

By the way, always easy spending other people's money, isn't it? When its your own retirement account you may be destroying to take care of a nuisance lawsuit, many lawyers would advise you settle.

That, or pony up $321,000 for legal fees, and ready yourself for a very ugly five year-long legal battle.

I know this sounds conspiratorial but these fucking people know that 2012 is flat out IT for them.  They must stop the conservative movement in this country at that election.

I'm totally against giving the Federal government another revenue stream in the form of a national sales tax. It was that easy to dismiss his candidacy. As far as this bimbo eruption goes, I'm just glad it's happening during the primary process. I'm inclined to believe the guy is a dog. I base it on personal experience, having known a lot of successful egoists who feed their narcissism by chasing skirt. That said, enough already. @61 Fire

It matters not. No question Romney is a Republicrat who will head for the center when elected. Conservatives will have to ask themselves if a center right president is preferable to a leftist. Who will do the Least harm when in office? IMHO, any Republican President in 2012, will be strongly influenced by the conservative branch of the party while in office, in both policy and practice. Conservatives should understand this and work to elect to congress those who will support convservative principles.

Romney will be the candidate the Republican Party selects. Let's find a way to make it work out best for the country.

107 Comedy gold. FYI, we knew your "base" was a collection of rubes, malcontents and robots but we didn't realize it was this bad. You have people in your midst who know these allegations are false because . . . wait for it . . . they're being reported by the liberal media. Think about that for a second. How insane is that? Shit, even our people -- who literally are deranged, by the way -- are not that bad. When the Edwards story broke, for example, they didn't deny it merely on account of Fox News reporting it. Anyways, for decades we've duped your idiot blocs into not voting with late hits, bogus polls and like items. We've floated stories about your candidates' wives getting abortions or about their kids being on drugs, etc. Your "base" is so stupid not only have they fallen for it but they've fallen for it every election cycle. Of course our shining moment was the DUI thing with Bush. Do you realize somewhere around 4 million of your rube-bots stayed home and didn't vote because of that? If we had had a little more time to gin up false ballots in Florida, and disqualify more military ballots, we would have pulled that one off. Here's the crazy part about this Cain trainwreck: we're not behind it. Seriously. He's not a Democrat plant. Turns out your robot rubes not only are doing our dirty work for us they're doing all of our work for us. This is like Sharron Angle, Ken Buck or Christine O'Donnell amped up to 11. This is where the Cain-hate becomes unhinged. A slur is a deliberate falsehood or insult. This was an "inaccurate charge." There was a lot of circumstantial evidence against Anderson, they made the charge, prematurely, but they clearly believed they had identified the culprit.

It's not Cain hate. Dear god if we think a candidate is awful and flawed it isn't motivated by some irrational hatred. It's because we've judged him based on his ideas and history and found him wanting.

Andy at the H2 pointed this out. Most of us have had this arc with Cain.

Didn't know him< Kinda like him< Willing to listen to his ideas< Anaylzing his 9-9-9 tax plan< seeing him play the race card on Perry<Watching all the sexual assaults come out of the woodwork< really not liking this guy.

You seem to think we're skipping all the middle parts. His 9-9-9 plan is awful. He's a bumbling fool at times. He played the race card against Perry when he thought it played to his advantage. He doesn't even show up in Iowa or other primary states. Many of his campaign appearences are book signings. He's soft of the abortion and supports state's rights to violate the second amendment. We're finding out that he probably has a very unsavory past when it comes to women.

Hatred is often irrational. Our dislike, or should I say my dislike of Cain is based on a fairly thorough evaluation of his as a man and a candidate.

117 Bialek is a liar. She says she went to "confront" Cain at a Tea Party event and he looked uncomfortable. Of course, there are lots of people at a Tea Party event. And someone actually saw Bialek meet Cain. http://alturl.com/4x4h8 Interesting photo along with the story. Not sure when it was from. But, hey she could be telling the truth about the other stuff. But as I said yesterday - the specifics that are helpful are not provable. The specifics that are provable are not helpful. Does he have to say, no, I did not touch here, I did not touch her there, I did not touch her anywhere? I strongly suspect that the story of her going to DC to meet Cain to try to get her job back (she had been fired after 6 months on the job) is true in that she went there and went to dinner with him. This is provable that it happened, not provable in the negative. The events in the car are not provable either way. She says she told her boyfriend but not the details. BF sounds like a shithead - if my girlfriend said some guy I had sent her to see about a job was inappropriate with her I would get the details and if it was a grope and head grab, I would definitely confront him. But hey, that's just me. At any rate, Cain has met this woman. There is a picture of them arm in arm (not sure when that is from, likely whatever event the after party was about in 97). So he has touched her, he can't say he never touched her. But if it is true that they went to dinner to talk about a job, well, that in itself looks bad enough. That may just be the way he does business, which is kind of what he has hinted at, I am a friendly guy, engage in a lot of banter. I am not saying that this is a disqualification for President, but the Left has him by the short hairs. This was well planned. First the anonymous hits, then this woman says, I am giving voice to the anonymous with my unprovable story. And non-supporters of Cain say, look, they did not spin this well. Not ready for primetime. Well, here we are. Go Romney. Yay.

119 Just a thought. We don't know the facts. That's a given. But what if Cain's version of the facts is that his accuser, after several adult beverages before and during a nice dinner, came on to him. In the car. And when he tried to politely tell her no, she didn't take the rejection well. In other words he tried to help her with a job counseling, but she flipped out on him when he rejected her. Would folks here that currently give her the benefit of the doubt continue to do so? If so, why? Or, what if he says, I upgraded her room -- the NRA has a deal with the hotel. We had drinks and we had dinner, but nothing happened. Zero. Would folks here that currently give her the benefit of the doubt continue to do so? Why? Discuss among yourselves....

123 Here we go again. Any evidence he has done anything wrong? Any at all? Nope.

Actually, there is a little evident in the public view: the testimony of Allred's client.

The question is, how credible is that testimony? The crux of the matter is what happened, or didn't happen, in the car when they were alone together - assuming they ever were alone together.

I had a lot of problems with Cain before all this blew up: his studied ignorance of certain areas, his willingness to play the race card, his making unsubstantiated accusations against people in the Perry campaign, his endorsement of a national sales tax (which I think would be a catastrophe).

What really bothers me about this is that it gets the JEF off the front page: instead of people talking about the deficit increasing by $1 million every 20 seconds, or his mad dash for the exits from Iraq, or his eagerness to handcuff the nation and had it to his cronies in Big Labor and Big Capital, we're obsessed with whether or not some guy put his hand up some woman's skirt 15 years ago. If I were into conspiracy theories, I'd say that this may be the real goal of the MFM's campaign: they don't care about Cain so much as they want a smokescreen for the JEF.

125 103 83 - well, now we are at the crux of the matter. You asked why it didn't happen to the woman more often, (which we don't know it didn't, and let's face facts, I'd that were here history you would simply dismiss her as a whore or money seeker) but now you just go straight to you don't believe her. That's fine, but it is light years away from your original statement.

Posted by: Boone at November 08, 2011 08:44 AM (Jl3Mu)

No. It is not. One of the reasons I don't believe her is that her story doesn't make sense. It not only doesn't make sense as far as "here's what happened" but it also doesn't make sense in that most hot women are not shocked, stunned, etc by the come-on. It happens all the time. That's another reason I don't buy it because I would think she wouldn't even remember something like that from that long ago.

I never said men were incapable of not grabbing someone's crotch. Not all men anyway.

I still don't understand what Cain has against Perry.  He was too quick and vicious with the racist rock thing.  Since then, he's slandered Perry at opportunity.  Something doesn't add up.  I haven't seen Perry attack Cain like this at all.  It seems totally out of character that Cain otherwise tries to portray.  From this perspective, I've thought he was working with Romney.

Speaking of Romney, I noticed that he refused to do the "center seat" thing on Brett Beir's show.

Guys, it's not Ace's fault that there are not great conservatives in the race.

What do you want him to do. Ignore what's going on with Cain, as if he ignores it then it will go away?

I'm amazed that there are so many people passionately committed to Cain right now. I seem to recall his poll numbers being in the 5-6 range just a month and a half ago. It's almost as though you're conservatives who jump to whatever candidate seems like he can beat Romney and then defend that candidate well beyond the point of which they are a viable candidate. (not everyone obviously but a select group)  I understand the desire to be loyal, but this is a primary. It's a process where we weed out the weak candidates.  Cain is a weak candidate.

It's not some odd coincidence that almost every not-Romney candidate has led in the polls.

I can relate. I do not want Romney to win, however I will admit when a candidate is so badly damaged that it's pointless to remain loyal to them.

And for those of your who want Cain to replace Palin, at least Palin is conservative on most issues. Cain isn't.  He's not a substitute for Palin.

“I’ve been in business. I’ve had females working for me. I know the sensitivity. I know that any irate woman can totally destroy a man, just like that.” He notes that the allegations against Cain have concerned verbal statements, not physical actions. “A woman can always say no, you know? So suck it up and quit being a crybaby.” Dick Pipho, a Cain volunteer, Iowa.

Only verbal, no actions? The married Cain took another woman to his corporate apartment at night. That of itself is inappropriate. It doesn't matter what qualification of sex happened behind closed doors. This is BEAMER Cain using "because I could" as CEO, that being his pitch for the Presidency of the United States.

That said, enough already. I know in our little corner of the intertubes we don't have the power to shape the MFM narrative, but there's a lot more going on than Herman Cain following his dick around.

142 I am utterly amazed at how easily people on the Right will give the fucking Main Stream Media the benefit of the doubt when subjected to sheer repetitive force. It's almost Pavlovian. It makes Charlie Brown's trust of Lucy's offer to hold the football seem ... reasonable. Goebbells was right- a lie told often enough will indeed become the "truth" for mind numbed cattle.

But but but- there were charges on file from the 90's! True, but how many?

But but but there are soooo many accusations coming out of the wood work! That must make this all truuuuue!!! Yeah. That's amazing isn't it?

A cluster of "random" accusations perfectly timed on the heels of the failed Politico attempt to bring Cain down. Why, it's almost as if this entire thing has been orchestrated around....(what one documented charge from the 90's that we know about? Maybe?) and the rest just keep coming. It has the sort of feel of an.... oh I dunno.... an Astroturfed event. But NAH, that couldn't be. Oh and now we find that Sharon Ball-lick was flirting with Cain backstage at a recent appearance and actually hugged him. Poor thing must still be in shock after that scary encounter with Cain's man-sausage 15 years ago. - it's amazing what Rahm can orchestrate by dragging a $100 bill through a Chicago suburb trailer park- ain't it? But she said Tuesday that she's not after money, despite a bankruptcy stemming from bills related to her late mother's medical bills.

"And I could have actually sold my story, but I didn't because .... my whole objective is to tell the truth and also help other people out there who may have been in similar situations."

Bialek's fiance, Mark Harwood, backed her up in an interview with CNN affiliate WGN-TV.

"This isn't for fun. You don't go on a political stage and make these kinds of press conferences unless you really stand by your convictions," he said. "There was no money motive to this. She's got the same political interests as Herman Cain in terms of party, so it wasn't like there was opposing political gain here at all."

149 Yesterday at NRO there was an article by Fred Thompson-who I supported last time. He was writing about Cain, and said something similar happened duringnhis campaign. After he dropped out his people traced the slurs to find out where they started. they began with an opposition research company employed by Romney. Shockingly most of the comments on the piece tore into Fred for dissing Romney! Our side seems to be truly unable to look at facts, rather than trying to learn things. I am for Perry, but have said from the beginning not to jump to conclusions. My own father was sued for sexual harassment, so I know something about this. Unfortunately, I am now feeling that if I defend Cain, it would signify that I support him for president. I don't, except as second or third choice, but everything has gotten so muddled. The real concern, however, is that we, collectively, are now ignoring the huge other stories. Is Cain more important than the WH ignoring Solyndra? Or fast &furious? Real things are happening now, and we are caught up in things that happened 20years ago. That is crazy.

152 The Cain story is simple:  if true, well, he used to hit on women at work.  So take that as part of his past.  All these allegations stem from a decade or so ago.

If you accept that about him - he used to be piggy, but has since gotten it together and seems to have his marriage intact, then it really doesn't have much to do with whether his policies for the country are a good bet.

I'm not impressed with his handling of the allegations, but he isn't my first choice candidate anyway.

And compared to the crap in Obama's background, Cain being a former womanizer isn't nearly as worrisome as Rev. Wright, Ayers, etc etc etc

162 >>>did she talk about hugging Cain at a Tea Party rally?

Honestly, LMendez, the people who are gratefully seizing upon this detail as "damning" don't seem to realize that it proves and even suggests nothing.  You know what probably happened?  Cain saw her, recognized her, and reflexively gave her a hug.  THEN she said to him "hey, you remember what you did to me?"  Then it got awkward.

I love how people are assuming that this is somehow evidence that she's just a lying whore who fabricated everything.  Um...no.  It doesn't even tilt the playing field one way or another.

Hey, you know what?  It's possible she's making all this up.  That's it's all lies and she's just a nutty slutty psychopath.  But it will be easy enough to confirm.  The hotel records will really indicate a lot.  Can we all agree that if indeed her room was upgraded to a posh suite by Cain, then that strongly militates toward his guilt?  Or can people suggest a DIFFERENT reason why Cain would be buying a woman who was not his wife (and whom he didn't even really know) a pricey room?

170  I think there's no traction on this story among conservatives and there wont be for a few simple reasons.

1: Everyone knew this was coming the second Cain became the front runner. Its what the establishment does to upstarts, particularly conservative upstarts. so when it happened, we all went "AHA ! I knew they'd try this weak assed crap. how lame. "

2: Clinton's accusers were ten times more credible, and no one cared. Precedent set.

3: Jobs Jobs Jobs. Thats what we care about. We'll take a complete a-hole with a plan. Nothing else matters. Its too late in the game to start dilly dallying with tabloid nonsense. Tea partiers dont watch reality TV, we dont keep up with the Kardashians. We're deadly serious. The media is not.  Allred is the final straw. The time for those idiot clown shows is over. because Tea partiers understand, the media IS the enemy. The democrats are just a subsidiary. to win, really win, the media must be destroyed.

If Cain gets the nomination, a huge push from the LSM will be his health.

That will be hard to fight.  I do not know much about it except that he had colon cancer that went to his liver.  I wish that would get aired now, because it sure does not seem like his campaign learns quickly.   Does the campaign have all the info it needs about his condition?  Does the opposition?  Remember Paul Tsongas?

I was listening to local radio yesterday and one of the sponsors of the Newt-Cain discussion said that as Cain was leaving the stage, a reporter shouted out something about the allegations.  Instead of letting the media person respond, Cain apparently could not help himself and responded.  This then became a "legitimate" media distraction from the event.  The sponsor said that afterward he told the candidate not to "take their bait."

This is the problem I see with Cain's campaign.  It seems too slow to learn not to "take the bait."   It does not seem to be able to reasonably foresee what the next bait might be, and, worse, just fumbles an off-the-cuff response.  Very easily manipulated.

This seems to be less a lack of "political" experience and more of a lack of professional discipline.    The persecution from the media is helping Mr. Cain - and I understand that appeal to rally around the perceived underdog/unfairly persecuted hero.

But if his undisciplined approach continues, it does not bode well for the GOP in the general, and sure as hell does not bode well for a Cain administration.

I wish it weren't so.  I am a Texan and have been pretty happy with Perry as gov, with the exception of the Gardisil weirdness and the ongoing immigration mess.  I was a Perry supporter until the "heartless" comment.

So instead of explaining that the states had been hamstrung by the feds and were trying to make the best of a bad situation, he attacks the character of those with reasonable opposing views???  No.

So I started pulling for Cain.  And now this.  Once again, it is the response - with the bizarre and seemingly baseless attack on the Perry campaign that has turned me off - so far.

What the hell is wrong with these people?

I don't understand the highly delusional meme here that the media want to destroy Herman Cain. If Herman Cain were the nominee he would easily lose in a landslide to Obama after people found out that he has even less of a fucking clue about what he's talking about than Obama. So if anything, the media would want to prop him up.

187 As to the hotel room upgrade, I'd like to know if Cain (as head of a major hospitality industry lobby) just made a call to the Hilton Manager and asked for a standard upgrade for people in town doing business w/the NRA, or if Herman actually whipped out his own plastic. Neither is proof of anything, but if he was spending his own cash to upgrade the room of a blonde hottie that he'd only met once before, then that is sketchy. I wouldn't try to justify it to my wife, that's for sure.

198 Good analysis of the situation, Gabe.  You're spot on about people looking for proxies when the waters get muddied.  I'd also add that I think many of us also start drawing on our own experiences or biases about the underlying complaint - sexual harassment - when the allegations are muddied.  Some folks clearly do not think there is such a thing; others of us know there is.  So the standard for what would register as a believable allegation is widely varied.

I do not think Cain intended to be a serious candidate and I rejected his candidacy quite a while ago on his qualifications (or lack thereof) and temperament, so I would like the whole thing to go away as it's really sucking the air out of the news cycle and that only helps one candidate.

Oh really?  What if their harasser is running for President of the United States?  Might that change the calculus for "going out of their way to confront someone?"  By her own account yesterday afternoon she said she went to confront Cain about this at the TeaCon.  So it's not as if there's any inconsistency in that respect.  As for this supposed damning "hug," again: it seems quite likely that this was Cain's reflex response to seeing someone he recognized.  "Oh, Sharon!" [hug]  Then she stops him dead in his tracks by quietly talking to him about what he did all those years ago.

Look, we don't know either way.  But my proposed narrative is a hundred times more plausible than yours; the only criteria you seem to be working on is "Cain must be innocent and this woman must be a liar, therefore all facts will be interpreted uniformly to fit that Procrustean bed."  But that's the logic of fools.

Innocent until proven guilty is in a court of law.   Here we're talking the court of public opinion, and the issue is not so much whether it's likely to have happened, but how it'll play in a general election.

Romney is not a true conservative, and this might well end up a clothesspin election in the primary.   But we need to keep our sights on the goal - get the SCOAMF out of office.

Cain could change the ENTIRE focus of this with a hard ass presser where he basically says:

"the media is in the tank for this President. Instead of talking about the 200 murders his justice department is responsible for in Mexico, they want to destroy me with these trumped up charges. Instead of talking about the 500 Million this administration stole from taxpayers and put in the pocket of one of Obama's fundraisers, the media instead persists in this witch hunt. The media is covering for this awful presidency by attacking me. They don't want to do their job of holding this administration accountable for theft and murder. Instead it's me they're coming after. How come no one asks the President about the billion dollar loan to Nancy Pelosi's half-brother? Why is no one talking about how Obama's Occupy Wall Street protests are rife with rape and drug use and theft? Why isn't the media doing its job instead of attacking me? Because they are in the tank for the democrats and for this President. The media is corrupt, monolithic, and ideologically left-wing. So they don't ask about theft, rape, murders in mexico. Instead, they attack me. Because I'm a black republican. And they can't have that."

This kind of speech would DESTROY! Throw out BIG CLAIMS! RAPE, MURDER, DRUG USE! And then let them call it deflection. The media will still be forced to cover it all even if trying to undermine Cain's words. All eyes are on herman cain - he should use that to his advantage and put the focus back on the media. It's be beautiful!

He knows less than nothing about foreign affairs, but for some strange reason...now what on earth could THAT be...he's given the benefit of the doubt and low expectations, and we're told to be patient because he's "learning" as he goes. Enough with this idiot, already. Sure, the Left is beyond hypocritical (see, B. Clinton), and Laura Ingraham is having a real baby over her hero being ripped, but we just did the whole "who cares about experience and who cares about the innumerable "mistakes" and 57 states, etc?" thing, to disastrous results. We made "history" already. How about an intelligent statesman this time? You know, just for shits and giggles?

252 I think that the people who are backing Cain to the hilt also believe deep down that there may be truth to the allegations, but they've settled on their candidate and come hell or high water, they're sticking with him.  In their thoughts, they can admit that they forgive him, despite his obvious amateurish moves and lack of real knowledge of how to fix this mess, but they cannot forgive someone like Newt Gingrich, a superior candidate, whose problems we do know of and are more than a decade old.

Perhaps so, but I am a realist. And I have been around for a while, consistently Conservative Libertarian. Not just reduced government, not just limited government, but absolute minimal governement. I know Romney will not go that far, but he certainly will go farther that way than our current POTUS will.

The Republican Establishment will have Mitt as the candidate. There is no question about this, and there is little that can happen to derail him. When he is the nominee and running for POTUS, Conservatives who choose to not vote for him are voting for Obama.

Support whoever the Republicans nominate, hold your nose if you have to, as I will, but vote ABO, or have four more years of what we have now, but accelerated by a second term Office Holder trying to make history.

Not really. I think he might be telling the truth, he might be lying his ass off. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN QUILTY.

That is my standard, so what I get from your spiel he should try to spin the allegations how exactly do you do that when there is not one piece of evidence nor a single corroboration of the accusations? He is handling it exactly right as the polls bare out. Come on throw me a bone here give me one fucking piece of evidence backing up these allegations that is all I ask. We have seen this same scenario played out before as has been pointed out on this page remember Clarence Thomas? Or how about Bill Cosby? And there are more that I canÂ’t remember off the top of my head. I honestly believe that there is a prejudice that says a black man is more likely to sexually harass women and the liberals know this and use it that is why this seems to be their standard weapon against blacks who do not stay on the liberal plantation and also it nullifies the race card for the victim.  By the way I am a big Perry fan and hope to GOD he gets his act together so I can vote for him as President but for GODS sake stop doing the libtards work for them if you don't like what Cain is doing then just leave it alone until it is cleared up one way or another.

Five facts emerged from the first three known cases of alleged harrassment: lump sump payments of (a)$35K and (b)$45K respectively. (c)These allegations were brought in Wash DC during a time period when allegations like this were in the news a lot! (d)The settled amounts indicate that there wasn't any "there" there, based on the knowledge of respectible attorneys who work in that field of litigation/law. (Clinton settled personally for $800K+.) (e) When the NRA elected to allow one of the accusers to go public, she declined, further indicating that there wasn't any "there" there.

Those facts cause me to dismiss out of hand all three of those allegations, until and unless some additional information is provided. They should not even influence your perception of the fourth accuser, as in, "the bulk of the [so-called] evidence indicates...." or the "where there's smoke...". With no information that can be verified, the allegations cannot be considered legitimate for any purpose.

As for the fourth accuser, after one day it appears she has the motive, opportunity, and "bat-shit crazy" demeanor to allege unprovable allegations against Mr. Cain; allegations which would have risen to the level of sexual assault if true, yet she evidently did not act in a manner consistent with someone who felt assaulted when she took that picture with Mr. Cain. So no, I don't believe her; she is not, in my opinion, credible at this time.

Finally, this does not excuse HC's policy gaffes. I happen to like HC because: 1) he's willing to take on the establishment thinkers and make bold proposals, which is what we need to actually prevent DOOM! 2) He is willing to fight and to challenge, and has been doing that since he challenged the original healthcare law proposed by Clinton. 3) He has strong private sector experience. 4) People who worked with him at NRA lauded his capacity for understanding how Washington works and knowing what levers to push. 5) He also has public sector experience in the Fed, and with the Navy, as a civilian. 6) He is a "real" person, and not a bought and paid for pol.

His gaffes on foreign policy (the Israel thing, not the China thing) and abortion (inarticulate and confusing) are FACEPALM! moments that demonstrate a lack of preparation and seriousness that lend credence to the claim that he wasn't in the race to contend, he was in to sell books; however, they are not proof of the claim either. In and of themselves, they are simply disappointing, and evidence that his focus is on economics. That said, as John Bolton said on the radio this morning, "the President has to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time." You don't get a pass for your non-economic positions. If you did, PAULIANS UNITE!!!11!!!!ELEVENTY!

I still have questions about Newt and whether he can overcome his baggage, and whether Perry can overcome his immigration position with the base, his evident lack of debating skills, and the residual baggage from the last Texas governor we hired for the job. I live in Romney-land and he is a non-starter for me; anyone who wants to support him had better make shure that he remains a "good democrat", and stays bought; with heavy down-ticket hard-core federalist conservatives to keep his central planning "Romney-knows-best" tendencies in check. Santorum and Bachmann are also non-starters, minimally for electability reasons.

"Help me Rep. Paul Ryan (and/or Sen. Rubio). You're our only hope!"

271 Whoops... forgot to mention that comparisons to Clinton and any alleged hypocrisy are unwarranted. Clinton's problem was lieing under oath. To say that we have to believe the Cain accusers because we believed the Clinton accusers is diversionary. I didn't have to believe the Clinton accusers based only on their statements: I was able to review actual evidence and the fact that the President lied under oath.

Posted by: NewEnglandDevil at November 08, 2011 07:07 AM (73P68)

272 If it was one accuser and one settlement I would give Cain the benefit of the doubt.  Two accusers and two settlements not so much so.  On the mitigating side, the fact that the National Restaurant Association is willing to allow at least one of the accusers to talk to the press makes me think maybe the facts aren't as damning as some people think.

I still keep coming back to those two settlements though.  I have never been accused of sexual harassment or been in a position where a company would take out a key player insurance policy on me, but as I understand it one payout would really inflate the premiums and 2 would drive them through the roof so it would not be in the associations best interests to just payout without at least a fairly good chance they would lose at trial or mediation.

My other problem here is that Cain is denying everything but he isn't calling for the official record to be released.  If he was exonerated  you would think he would be screaming to have the record of the investigation out there.

275 Look, we don't know either way. But that's the logic of fools.

Posted by: Jeff B. at November 08, 2011 10:06 AM (hIWe1)

Yah Jeff, feel free to take that strawman and stick it up your ass before you light it on fire.  That isn't my 'narrative' at all, and you're just projecting your own logic (in the reverse) in this case.  The woman - by her own admission this morning - did not confront Cain in any way shape or form at that back stage meeting - you know, the one she worked so hard to make happen.  In fact, to someone both rational and uninterested, it looks more and more like she's a nut that was determined to inject herself into the public spotlight at any cost - whether as a friend of the candidate or an accuser of said candidate.  But hey, keep defending her and smearing him.  Never mind Gloria Allred, the instant (read: preplanned) jaunt on the talk show circuit, the fact that she's broke and out of work, the public testimony of the folks who know her, as well as those who set up and witnessed the meeting, the fact she never told anyone the details of the encounter until now, the fact that this isn't her first sexual harrassment accusation, the fact that she didn't confront him at the hotel last month when she had the opportunity, that Cain has said "There is no truth to any of these accusations" etc.  Or as some of us like to think of it:  The Facts We DO Know.  All of that's irrelevant and out of the boundary of consideration.  Cain's obviously a rapist.  Duh.

For what its worth, I'm NOT a Cainiac.  I didn't think he was ready even before this stuff broke.  But I'm fucking sick to death of asshats like you and Ace turning the gatling guns on your own fucking people.  Take a step back and fuck your own face you obtuse nit.  Reagan had an 11th Commandment for a reason.  The problem is most conservatives today are obviously just as fucking stupid as the commies and no longer grasp the ontological basis for or reasoning behind the Commandment.  I'm not letting the MSM pick my candidate, and I sure as fuck am not letting some lightweight poli-sci intellectual wannabe's (like the AOSHQ) do it with puerile negative attack stories for me either.  PS - Romney's dick in your mouth doesn't make you attractive no matter how much Ace says it does.  Word.

282 Here's what makes me skeptical about her story. One is the presence of Gloria Allred. The other is that he supposedly grabbed her head and moved it toward his crotch. Even if you're a rich married guy on the make, that strikes me as a very, very low percentage play, if you're looking to get some head. You get her a hotel suite, you give her a limo ride and then you just go for it like it's spring break in Daytona Beach? It's just such a crude, unlikely move that it sets off alarm bells in my head. It makes me think that Allred told her to make her story more juicy. Here's a story I could believe -- they have lunch, he slides his hand across the table and touches her, and propositions her. But this? I think someone who would use that head-grab move would have a very long, very well-known history of such behavior (e.g., Sen. Packwood, Bill Clinton, etc.)

and follow up with questioning the character of fellow conservatives and assassinating Cain's character based on unsubstantiated allegations: just because the libs tolerate scum is no reason we should.

@ 250 He knows less than nothing about foreign affairs, but for some strange reason...now what on earth could THAT be...he's given the benefit of the doubt and low expectations, and we're told to be patient because he's "learning" as he goes.

Would you care to show us any of the other GOP candidates who have "foreign policy experience"?  Romney doesn't (unless you count "saving" the Olympics).  Perry doesn't.  Gingrich doesn't.  Bachmann and Santorum don't.  The only one who conceivably has "foreign policy experience" is Huntsman - and no thanks emphatically on that one.

Hate to tell you this, but very few jobs actually give somebody "foreign policy experience" - being President, and perhaps VP, does.  Being on certain congressional and senatorial committees might.  Being an ambassador would.  Working in the CIA, NSA, probably counts.  In fact, the only President in recent history that I can think of who had "foreign policy experience" prior to taking office was Bush I, due to his being Director of the CIA, and his term as Chief Liaison to the PRC prior to that, as well as being, you know, the US ambassador to the UN.

Kennedy? None.  Johnson? None.  Nixon?  None.  Ford?  None.  Carter? None.  Reagan?  None.  Clinton? None.  Bush II? None.  Obama?  Of course not.  In fact, except for Bush I, you have to go all the way back to Eisenhower before you find someone who took office already having appreciable foreign policy experience - and a lot of his involved killing them.

So please, whatever other beefs you might have against Cain, can we put this little piece of ridiculous nonsense to bed now?

As for Cain's missteps, frankly, I think a lot of them have been selectively quoted and spun to make him look "bad" or "dumber" than reality.  Take the "China - nuclear" thing.  Obviously, based on his previous writings from, IIRC, 2005, he knows China has nukyulur weapons.  The most common-sense response to his statement was that when he spoke of them "developing" these weapons, he meant "develop" in the sense of "improving" - a perfectly fine use of that English word.

I will admit, his "I'd release everybody in Guantanamo in exchange for one American" was ill-advised.

296 @ 292 No thanks, let your mom eat it. I hear she loves to eat root... Anyway, you missed my point. And, as a bonus, you seem shocked, SHOCKED!!, that the MSM would do such a thing! OMG! Was Sunday your first day watching TV? Of course the MSM doesn't touch Barry and associates. Of course they are all over this Cain thing. My point, classy one, is that the only folks who would be influenced by anything the MSM reports, are those who voted for Obama. How you interpreted that as a shot at you, only you, your mom, and the root in her mouth, know : )

"the media is in the tank for this President. Instead of talking about the 200 murders his justice department is responsible for in Mexico, they want to destroy me with these trumped up charges. Instead of talking about the 500 Million this administration stole from taxpayers and put in the pocket of one of Obama's fundraisers, the media instead persists in this witch hunt

Just so beautiful JDW that it must be repeated.

cain has been lying since last week. two of those lies were attempts to destroy/discredit perry and curt anderson. that's scum in my book. and no strawman, you guys are trying to get him nominated. as for the other, no one has been lying and calling cain names like his supporters have done to these women. crackwhore is the one i love the most, really keep things highbrow w/ that one.

300 So Sharon Ball-licker and Gloria (I'm a leftard who has a history of attacking Republicans) Allred come out with accusations and BAM! they have instant cred!

Should we wait even 24 hours to see what surfaces on Mrs Ball-licker?

Well, yes, maybe we should.

Watch the breaking news on Drudge get sweeter and sweeter as the day and week goes on. Mrs Ball-licker is clearly an attention whore who's irresponsible in financial matters and relationships. In other words she's a loon.

302 @ 296 "...Would you care to show us any of the other GOP candidates who have "foreign policy experience"?" Ah, reading comprehension, the good old days... I never said anything, read that word again, ANYTHING, about "experience". I'm talking about things any HS student should know. But I am glad you acknowledge that the Gitmo thingy, was "ill advised". By doing so, you prove my point of low expectations, and him being allowed to learn as he goes. Because, you know, we just HAVE to have Cain...for SOME reason...

there have been many more posters slandering the accusers than have been saying cain is guilty. these women have been called crackwhores, golddiggers, deadbeats, etc. too many cainiacs have been well versed in the clinton smear machine.

Well, in regards to the above, what to make of someone who waits 20 years and then springs this story at a politically convenient time ? and who happens to live in David Axelrod's building ? Especially when these actions follow a well tread political pattern that we've seen basically every single time a conservative gets too popular ?  There is a boy who cried wolf effect here that you cant ignore. Associating with a serial liar like Allred doesn't help the case at all, just makes it smack more of opportunism or paid shilling.  If the standard is going to be anyone can say anything and we run with it ...lets apply it evenly.

Speaking of Nixon -- the "Kitchen Debate" with Khrushchev in 1959. Can you imagine, even for a second, Joe Biden going toe-to-toe with a hostile head of state?

Chas - that wasn't a lie; that was an allegation, based on Cain's knowledge of who had prior knowledge of issues that were not in the public domain. Just because Anderson/Perry deny it, doesn't make it a lie. Even if Anderson and Perry didn't do it, that doesn't make it a lie either. It makes it wrong, but not a lie.

Why don't you come up with an actual lie so that we can discuss it?

As for calling anonymous women names.... what? they're anonymous? so any discussion is purely speculative? and not actually discussing an actual woman?

So you're fine with lieing about and calling names to conservatives here, but not to anonymous women? Whose existence just so happens to buoy your preferred candidate? I'm not sold on any of the candidates an am only really against two (Romney/Huntsman). Do you think that your attack of anyone who questions the veracity of the media is going to draw support to Perry, or whomever you're supporting?

@ 303 Ah, reading comprehension, the good old days...

I never said anything, read that word again, ANYTHING, about "experience". I'm talking about things any HS student should know.

That's because I wasn't just responding to your particular statement, but to the general run of arguments over the past month that have dealt with his "lack of experience," of which your post conceivably falls under but is not the summa tota

Which would have been apparent, had you any reading comprehension. *smirk*

@ 302 I just want to point out that Nixon had extensive foreign policy experience from his 8 years as Vice President under Eisenhower.

True, I'd forgotten about that.  Nevertheless, that's sort of the exception that proves the rule, isn't it?  Before being on a successful ticket and being VP, he still didn't have any prior foreign policy experience, and therefore would be "unqualified" in the minds of some to have even been on that ticket in the first place, which is obviously bunkum.  He didn't pick any up from his days in the Congress or the Senate...

310 You know there is a bias in this country against numbers and science.  People have a fear of both.  Highly educated people with Juris doctors and PHD's have been known to joke "you said there would be no numbers".  People's moms want them to be a doctor but instead they go the academic route cause they aren't comfortable with science.

If you look at what Cain has said, publicly, his pattern is to study thoroughly, the subject he is tackling and then analyze what needs to be done to effectively handle said situation.  He's had success in business.  Using this strategy.  People want to discount that the strategy could transfer to politics.  they want to believe that people in business operate in a vacuum and that politics is somehow a seperate "animal" so to speak.  But deal with people effectively is a skill that some inside the beltway seem to have never developed to their detriment.  It's the one skill that got BO elected.  the Krauthammer's of the world aren't giving him a fair chance.  They've decided that he isn't a part of their political literati and that is that.  In America any natural born citizen of a certain age is uspposed to be able to have a shot at the presidency.  the founding father's didn't make a couple of pages with "rules if you want to be president" they made it quite simple.  The rules, like you have to already be a  politician or at least have had political experience is a rule made up to circumvent the simple rules the founding father's set down.

I don't like labels or groups, I didn't join the tea party or a political party for that reason.  You join and suddenly you have to accept the mantle of all the alleged beliefs of said group or party when in reality you may agree with some things and not others.  So far Herman Cain has articulated a lot of his beliefs and thoughts.  He's given solid reasoning as to why he has those beliefs and thoughts.  He's hit a chord with a lot of a political type people across a broad spectrum of American voters.

Now he is faced with a cadre of accusers.  He's been whollly criticized for how he should have handled the various situations.  People want to see anger yet that did not serve howard dean well.  People claim his chief of staff has violated election law and has a bunch of true negatives in his past.  It's possible that Herman Cain doesn't just say he's a Christian but actually tries to live beig a Christian and thereby hired the guy maybe no one else dared hire.  We don't know.

Some say he attacked Perry.  I give him a pass on that one cause I personally get a creepy vibe from Perry, you might choose not to give him a pass.  But that's you and I"m me and thank God, we each have a vote.  I'm not a romeny lover either.  Yeah if the president wanted to make him Secretary of the treasury and Paul Ryan had already turned down the job, well then I'm all in for romney.  But there comes a time when those running professionally for president aren't taken seriously.  So Paul and Romney fit that category.  Newt and Santoreum and Bachman and Huntsman are all good candidates but might not make a good president.  As a group presidency, they'd be spectacular.

I'm waiting to hear what Herman Cain has to say in the presser.  I'm sure that absolutely nothing he says will change the way some of you feel about him and his candidacy.  But just remember.  Understanding the economy, not just being briefed on it but being able to request everything and look at everything yourself and understand it is no small skill.  You can be briefed on foreign policy, brought "up to snuff" as my mom says, rather quickly but if you have "fear of numbers" then you are still going to have to rely on people in your team to brief you and tell you the truth.  It's not the same, close but not the same.  I'd rather have a president who can really look at the numbers himself and call BS himself and have those being called out understand that he understands exactly what is going on.

311 Oh oh looks like Bielek's story is falling apart already. Go to legalinsurrection.com they have the whole story with links to you know actual witnesses. So we are back to the beginning that is to say absolutely no proof any of the accusations are true but hey! Who cares right? He needs to go by hook or by crook by GOD!
