If like me you're living the dream, you can watch it on CSPAN or their video stream.
It's no secret I haven't been impressed with Cain but I give him credit for going at with Newt. This format is Gingrich's bread and butter.He's been dealing with this kind of thing for over 25 years.
Don't expect any personal fireworks, (nothing about Cain's recent week) it'll be nice and friendly but there should be some clear distinctions.
One other thing...last night in Iowa Newt said if he's the nominee he'll challenge Obama to a series of similar debates. And if Obama says no? Newt will follow him around the country calling him out. That alone is almost worth supporting Newt.

He sucked Cain into this at this point in the campaign, but also sucked in the others by not doing it. He announced his plan to suck Obama into debates (or to run away from debates, publicly) yesterday. And he did so while wrapping it in a grand ole American tradition.

I've seen Palinistas floating the idea that a brokered convention (which is impossible under GOP primary rules, by the way...it can happen in Democratic primaries because of their infamous "superdelegates," a feature the GOP primary lacks) would somehow lead to Sarah Palin being drafted as the nominee.
I hate to break it to them that in a convention were ever brokered, she's just about the last person the "Beltway Insiders" doing the brokering would look to.

Buzz, I was in the comment section, but even though Compatibility View is checked off under the Tools drop down on the Menu bar, it doesn't show up where you say it will, but it is working, so I'm happy.
God only knows what the deal is I have Vista Pro and Microsoft Office 2007 on this laptop with IE9, maybe one of those things is screwing with it.

What he needs to do is keep these debates going against the putative front-runner and slowly gain support PLUS -- and this is key! -- establish the normalcy of these debates, so that in the general election, he can do exactly what he said, going after Obama and setting him up for these Lincoln-Douglas style debates, thus minimizing his "baggage" (and Lincoln had tons of baggage), wiping the floor with Obama.

Can someone explain this? Why is Newt blaming the CBO, they don't get to decide what they score, they score what they are given, no matter how bad and unrealistic those assumptions are. They just cook, they don't decide the ingredients in the receipe.

Then he need to say the CBO's results can be gamed, but its not the CBO itself does it, its the legislation they are given that can be gamed. One the one hand he goes after the CBO, and then minutes later uses their results as proof of his legislative victories. He needs to explain more clearly, that the CBO results can be gamed, and its not the CBO's fault, it is the whatever side that wants their legislation scored favorably that can game those results.
He is not making that distinction clearly.

Yea, perhaps. So far, this event in my view has lifted both these men up, and as someone who could not stand Newt in the 90's, I hate to admit that I would consider voting for him in the repub primarries. Either Cain, or him. I'm in the ABO camp for the general, but primaries, Newt might be the best, he is very succinct and pointed in this arguments. Still open though as to who to vote for, these type events are great.

I think CBO feels that pressure with every administration and every Congress, though Obama certainly wants CBO to score his proposals his way. But the over-arching problem is still the way CBO is forced to score proposals, because it allows Congress to waste more money. The baseline budget scoring system needs an overhaul.

I don't think electronic records creeps me out that much. If you belong to a medical group like Hartford Medical or ProHealth, you go to any of those doctors in those groups and your records just pop up onto the computer, so it's a smaller version and all your doctors can look at all your issues. I think it is helpful to the doctors.
Now if the government wants these records so they can socially engineer certain people out of existance for cost saving reasons, I say hell no.

Yes, I blamed them both, that's why it was sad to watch. Cain, Newt always seemed to solely focus on the real opponent, Obama. That and he was forced-out by colleagues. They had wanted him to resign earlier but the losses in the 1998 election made it easier. Newt had alienated a number of people due to his egotism and how that affected his approach as Speaker.

I found each man's perspective interesting, Newt drew from his experience as a speaker, Cain from his private business experience. Newt very academic, Cain very practical with real world examples and spoke much more plainly, honestly I found it refreshing, he wasn't as polished, but I don't expect him to be.

I hope there are more such events, as much I loathed Newt, this is making him more likeable, and Cain, well, he's likeable to begin with. Thought this was a great event -- for both men, maybe its just me, but I cannot stand watching the debates mainly because there is no time to form real in depth answers, and then you have B. Williams with his "my opinion is better than America's because I'm an anchorman".

Yeah Newt has never impressed me. He reminds me of a professor that has way too high of an opinion of himself. He's a smart guy but I just don't see the leadership qualities I'm looking for.

I only saw the last half hour. I loved the format. Both guys came off very well. Cain's answers on Medicare and block granting seemed coherent and clear to me.
Gingrich was fantastic. Obviously, he's much more practiced and informed than Cain.
It does crack me up that so many "conservatives" are so quick to dismiss Cain as a buffoon or a fool.
Look at Cain's background. He's obviously intelligent. It's quite obvious that he simply has not spend enough time thinking widely about policy detail. I think some topics are in his wheelhouse and some aren't.
Still, I would take either Cain or Gingrich over Romney any day of the week simply because I believe either of them would be far, far more likely to govern conservatively.
What good will Romney's beautiful hair and honed debating skills do you after you elect him and he bends your conservative a$$ over the bed and introduces you to little Mittens?

He is the absolute example of a guy who responds to incentives.
In Massachusetts, the incentives were: act like a liberal. So he did.
For the SLC Olympics and with Bain Capital, the incentives were: act like a competent business leader. And so he did.
Ever since 2009, the incentives were: act like a Tea Partier. And so he is trying to do, anyway.
So if you put Mitt in there *with a conservative Congress that has a backbone*, he will respond to the incentives dictated to him by that Congress.
Mitt is a weather vane and in that respect he is an asset not a liability.
One can easily imagine that if Cain were president, he would not budge off his stupid 9-9-9 plan. Because he thinks it is da shizzle even if Congress disagrees. With Mitt, he would change his mind in a heartbeat. That is good as long as Congress is conservative.

That's the "fun" of a strongly contested primary. Everybody thinks their guy is the ONLY candidate who is smart/polished/electable/whatever enough, and all the others aren't, so they have to be neutralised. If that means smearing the other guy(s), then so be it. By coming from out of nowhere and basically taking frontrunner status, Cain has angered both supporters of Romney (who doesn't get to coast in to his pre-ordained victory anymore) and Perry (who was riding high, but is now basically a third tier candidate - not sure why people here even keep talking about him like he was a serious candidate anymore).
That's why Ace kept running all of the concern troll stories about Cain for the last week w.r.t. the sexual harassment allegations. Ace is a Perry guy, IIRC, and Cain is a threat to Perry, ergo anything to smear Cain using a hundreds of thousands of hits a day blog will be helpful to Perry derivatively as it is harmful to Cain.

If you are interpreting praise of a candidateÂ’s plans as an endorsement, Ryan has endorsed Gingrich, Huntsman (Medicare plan), Perry, Cain, and Romney. As for the plan specifically, I will compliment Romney for finally showing some boldness on certain issues; however, that means nothing unless he continues to defend his plan once the libs start demonizing him for it. History says he will drop it like a hot rock, but we shall see.

But Mr. Wonderful was pretty definite about not running -- due to his 3 adorable children being at very formative phase of their lives, and not being able to balance family and job in the case of the presidency. Also, who the hell would do the crucial work he's doing as head of the Budget Committee (and possibly Ways and Means in the next Congress). Nobody on the Hill could fill his shoes at this point -- and we desperately need him to keep doing what he's doing, pushing the Path to Prosperity.

I'm likeing the Cain/Newt idea..Herman is decisive and not so full of hubris as to think he knows everything about everything..will ask the important questions and then make solid decisions. Gingrich would also due well against Obama as they both are know they are the smartest man in any room and as such, regardless of the nature of the topic being discussed, KNOW that they have the best answer to any problem.. for a trivial example, if we to recreate the storming of the Branch Davidians compound in Waco, both Obama and Gingrich could give a convincing sounding explanation on how they PERSONALLY would have done it better, with the benefit of hindsight and all. Whether the plan would mean jack to an actual member of the assault team is irrelevant, what is important is that the masses think the God-Emperor-El-Presidenta exudes confidence that he is the smartest man in the room.
Here is what matters,
It took less than 90 minutes for Gingrich exude that confidence that he really knows how to tweak specific paragraphs of the fucked up book he (in part) wrote, it took Cain 90 minutes to TRY to explain that the book itself is fucked up and does not need to be edited, but burned (but has to ask a smoker for a light).
Romney only needs 90 seconds to tell you what think you need to hear.
Perry needs 90 minutes to tell you what think you need to hear.
The smart money is on Romney.

While as a former CEO, the term "defined benefit plan" would not have been unheard of by him, and he was later able to recall the definition and speak coherently about it, the fact is it is obvious he blanked out then, and everybody saw it. Hence the audience laughter.

I'm so/so on West (like him overall, but have a few qualms, and need to know more and see him more to decide), but I believe Gingrich is known to like him and has thought about him as a nominee even (so I heard).
So that doesn't seem unrealistic. If anything happened to Gingrich, I'm sure West put the fear of the imaginary God into the nation's enemies, that's for sure!

~200 posts, and no-one here REALLY knows why Newt left as Speaker? Am I the only one who was paying attention in 98-99? Really?
Newt was speaker during the impeachment proceedings against Clinton. A lot of people felt he was less than aggressive because of his own adulteries...maybe true, but they DID impeach Clinton.
Unfortunately, in the 98 midterms, the GOP did very poorly, and Newt was blamed. THAT is why he decided to step down as Speaker--all that "ethics" stuff had been around for years, it had no real effect on his status. Had the GOP done well in the midterms, he'd have stayed Speaker, no doubt. He had a lot of rivals/detractors/enemies, but the guy was a freakin political genius from 1978-1995. No-one cd hold a candle to him. But his leadership was premised on SUCCESS, so when the GOP failed, he decided to go.
He was NOT replaced by Hastert, but by LA's Bob Livingstone, a good conservative w/a good reputation...but before he cd take the job, an adultery story (true) was broken about HIM...So Hastert was then next in line.
I've loved Newt since 1982, I recognize his fantastic talents, but...the guy has this sick gene for self-destruct! Pelosi couch (small)..."Respect" for #OWS (less small)...Kissing up to Sharpton & Arne Duncan (medium)... Blasting the Ryan plan on MTP (huge!)...Why TF can't he keep his mouth shut at strategic junctures?
I had no doubt last night he'd show he has FAR more command of the issues than Cain, but he does not have the self-discipline... the self-control...the self-knowledge... the steadiness, the patience, decisiveness, and the character to be a successful EXECUTIVE. I honestly believe these traits are far more important than encyclopedic knowledge of the issues for the Presidency
BTW, someone above made the smart rack that Cain proved himself to be "an amiable dunce." If you guys can recall the original amiable dunce, you'll know why I pray we can get a 2d one for Prez this year.
