— Ace Regarding Bialek, Cain called her a liar, and further said he doesn't even remember meeting her. He also said that he has never behaved inappropriately with anybody.
I want him to confirm or deny that hotel upgrade.
Anyway, as the earlier post suggested, the plan is to suggest that Bialek has a cash-money motivation for telling lies, though Ben Smith points out she lives with a rich fiance in a five-bedroom home, in one of those nice Chicago suburbs like the type I see in John Hughes movies.
Still -- that's not her money, and I guess anyone could use a quarter million dollars or whatever she could plausibly get for a book deal.
It gets a little tough for Cain, because he's not pushing against one accusation, but four, and even as he prepares to push back on Bialek, a friend of Karen Kraushaar starts speaking to the press (without being named):
A longtime friend of one of Herman Cain’s unnamed accusers tells CNN that Cain dangled a job promotion in front of the accuser at the same time he “made her very uncomfortable” with sexual “innuendo and overtures.”This woman told CNN she spoke extensively with her friend about Cain’s conduct in 1998 at the time the accuser was allegedly being harassed by Cain while they both worked at the National Restaurant Association…
The friend tells CNN the accuser would sometimes “come home in tears, and it would all come pouring out how upset she was.”
At least I assume that is Karen Kraushaar, because her friends began talking in that The Daily piece I linked earlier. Gotta be. Timing is too perfect.
So there is another contemporaneous bit of witness corroboration by another person without (so far) any clear motive to lie.
Via Allah, Kraushaar is apparently considering what could be the last move in this game.
She is not ready, according to this friend, to make a public statement and was planning to watch Cain's Tuesday news conference.According to the friend, Kraushaar is considering having a press conference in the future, perhaps with some of the women who have accused Cain but have not yet made their stories public.
That would be pretty devastating, I'm thinking. Unless the women were transparently lying, but I for one don't anticipate that will be the case.

She has a narration of events that are extremely credible, completely proper (even according to her) and likely to be unproveably false, followed by her claim that Cain made a move ... in the car ... with no witnesses ... then he took her back to her hotel.
This is, based upon what Bialek said to the MSM, specifically a case of she-said-he-said.
Cain's only reasonable response is the one he's making.
And now that another day has passed, we see more details about Bialek ... a couple of bankruptcies, continual loss of jobs, 5 or 6 litigations, a law firm unable to serve papers on her, as she seems to have no address, and a boyfriend ... who recommends she look up Cain for a job ... what does this boyfriend do for a living?
Where are the other 4 accusers? The latest one, #5, is all innuendo. What about the first 3?
Cain is tied for my vote, with Perry, but we should not lose faith in Cain yet. He needs to fight this one ... otherwise, he will not be the last.

On the other hand, this whole thing really rubs me the wrong way. I don't think the phrase "high-tech lynching" isn't that far off from the truth if the phrase didn't include the racial element. I don't know, maybe "high-tech character assignation" comes closer.
But, these allegations are not substantive, and there are too many on the right that don't seem to be all that bothered by that fact.

Sweet - He denies the charge, but it doesn't mean a thing. Nevertheless, we're supposed to believe an accuser who already has some holes in her story, who has some financial incentives to make some allegations, and whose behaviour at the Tea Party convention wasn't exactly in line with her story.
The only way he can possibly exhonerate himself is to prove that he didn't upsize a hotel room something like 14 years ago. Hope he kept his receipt.
Then, we have another accuser who we're supposed to believe it credible because of an anonymous friend of hers who says she "believable" in an online rag.
Good grief, this is surreal.

Yeah... but it's often the first thing an innocent party does, too. In fact, in legal matters, cops (off the record, of course) will say the last thing you should do is cooperate with them (by answering questions, anyway) if you're the object of the investigation. Even if you "have nothing to hide" you should have a lawyer present.
Don't get me wrong- he's done lots of thing a 'guilty' person does, so I think he's probably guilty of something. I'm just not sure what or if it rises to the level that I'm supposed to believe.

Amen brother.
The problem this time is that they are getting lots of help from the Right. The lefties will have plenty of large-caliber ammo to use against Cain or any other Republican candidate who isn't Mutt Romney (the Invincible). They will be able to say the candidate didn't even pass muster with his own people...and be able to back it up.

That plus the democrat party rejecting basic reforms today.
Plus fast and furious.
Plus Iran's nuclear ambitions, probably Obama's most lasting failure other than the debt bomb.
And we're talking about Cain. And the sad thing is this sex scandal matters. It shouldn't. I don't care. But it matters because this is how politics works for Republicans. Find something like this, and most Republicans are done for.
And when Cain's gone, we better hope our nominee is totally sex scandal free. I think Romney and Perry are clean, but hey, does it even matter?

So yes, this is all completely unsubstantiated bullshit. Tell me upon what charge(s) the settlements were reached, and I'll be interested.

I kinda like that Cain is willing to stand up for his friends. Anyone can stand up for someone when it's fair and reasonable. Only a friend can do it when it's a little unfair or a bit unreasonable.
Cain realizes that his kindnesses to Romney make him look bad to conservatives, especially those who recall his very poor treatment of Perry, who goes out of his way to give Cain slack on this (as he should). But Cain does it anyway. I admit I kinda like that he has real loyalty.
As much as I respect that, the fact is that Romney's record paints a clear picture. Cain's support for Romney paints a clear picture. This has always been the root of my inability to really cheer for Cain.

He does not have the character to be the nominee, and if you think he does, this reflects negatively on you. Look, I don't like everything about women. Presuming the previous NRA settlements were really over things that he could have thought weren't harassment, and that there either was no stay, or at least no upgraded stay at the hotel, yes.
Right now we have no facts. What we have are women who have made allegations. Two of those have settlements which seem to suggest there was something there- maybe they were both misunderstandings, or money-seeking, or maybe they were real harassment. We don't know. One of those says he sexually assaulted her (without witnesses), but gave enough detail that we can test virtually all of the rest of her statement.
So, provide me with verified facts- verify that Bialek is lying about something, and show me that the "sexual harassment" complaints were "nothing," and I'll believe that she's a liar and the other two are just gold-diggers.
What we do have right now (on Cain's side) is a man doing everything we point to as "guilty behavior" when it's on the other side- shifting story, change the subject ("who leaked it?"), race card, and now "lawyering up" (though I still say that's actually a smart move, here). That makes Cain look more guilty- especially since he has not (until this presser, and I don't have any quotes from this presser, so I don't know here, either) actually specifically denied any specific part of the charge against him.

Remember no level of evidence ensures 100% certainty;
When determining whether an event occurred or not, once evidence makes the event more likely to have occurred than not, it has met a preponderance of the evidence. It is the weakest burden normally used in court and is applicable in civil suits.

I know there has been much criticism of Cain for boneheaded gaffes and moves, but I find it hard to believe he would flat out lie, especially in view of the fact that he has lawyered up very well.
First thing I ask Cain when hired to represent him "Sir, is there any chance there may be a hotel receipt somewhere that reflects the room upgrade this woman mentioned?" He surely answered "No" otherwise his lawyer would not have allowed this particular press conference to happen.

Evidence is a fact or facts that point towards a conclusion, at least in my discipline. When it is limited or of uncertain reliability, one sometimes has to make a judgement based on where on thinks the majority of evidence points.
My point was that there probably isn't going to be some smoking gun which vindicates one side or another.

I have asked a good dozen times now, "Whose money was used for the (alleged) upgrade?"
'Cause I don't think it was Cain's.
He stiffed women on paying for $400 worth of wine he chose to order, when it was clear he wasn't going to get any out of the deal.
I think Cain knows whose budget was used for the upgrade, possibly the NRA, and they would have to be the ones to authorize to release the records. In other words, I suspect Cain was not only doing something along the lines of what he's accused of, but was also inappropriately using company funds to do so.

If I am innocent of this, here is what I would have done in this press conference:
1. Take a polygraph test last night. Pass it.
2. Hand out copies of polygraph results to all in attendance at press conference.
3. Say, "I have never sexually harrassed any woman. Period. Here are the results of the polygraph test I took last night."
4. Say, "I suggest you all go ask each accuser to pass a similar polygraph test."
5. Say, "Thank you for coming."
Polygraphs are voodoo. I know, law enforcement uses them all of the time but nevertheless they are voodoo.

even my more moderate wife liked him so much she may become a supporter
He was awful, but he had a god damned deep gravelly voice and "charisma" so I'm sure you and your wife thought he was bloody awesome.
He kept on saying he didn't remember ever seeing a woman who he later says he actually remembered when she was leaving his company!
Ponder that for a moment.
He said he saw her in meetings, that she reported to his VP, and he had interactions at NRA HQ while they both worked there. She ALSO walked up to him over a month ago, put his arms around him, and was heard and seen having an intense interaction with him, by a woman who later stormed off.
But no, when he saw her with Allred, he didn't remember seeing that woman before.
He also said he'd be willing to take a fucking lie detector test! Several times. And then said he won't take a lie detector test. But is willing to.
This is what qualifies for good in you and your wife's eyes?
Well he does have a deep voice and powerful body language.

Lie detectors are an interrogation technique. They do not detect lies.
Ever have one done to you? I have, as part of an pre-employment screening. 8 Hours of a sick person asking about 'sex with farm animals' and how he just did an exam on a fireman who was spending half his salary on hookers.. and that if I just admitted I did the same, he could help me. right. 8 hours of that kind of stuff. Lame techniques to get you to admit to really sick stuff, which you're not even there for. Anyway. I used to be gung ho on the lie detector thing until I had one done to me. Its nothing but an interrogation with someone making 'accusatory' shots in the dark to something you may have done in the past. And that was just an employment screening! ha
Cain should not fall for this crap. Lie detectors are not what the public thinks they are.

She's made very specific claims, including that he upgraded her room, which could be verified.
Unlikely.
If she had an upgrade, it would show on her credit card (or the boyfriend's card, which she claims she used) only if she was charged for it. She could have gotten an upgrade because she asked for it, the clerk liked her, her room wasn't ready, as a part of the Honors program or whatever they have at that hotel, etc. Only if Cain paid the price difference between her regular room and the "palatial suite" and the hotel still has a record of payments made in 1997 (doubtful) showing payment was made on Cain's card would that "verify" her story.
As for Cain proving a negative (that there was no charge on his card at the relevant time), it also seems a stretch--who remembers what credit cards they were using in 1997? And even if there is no charge, she still could say he got her the upgrade but wasn't billed for it.

Okay- I still find it hard to believe Cain would have used NRA funds to upgrade it. Better? The point is you don't use company funds to host someone the company just fired.
Now, it's also possible that the NRA was a good enough customer of the hotel (frequent bookings for consultants, guests, etc.) that he could call up and just say, "Hey, there's a woman booked in room X, can you upgrade her please?" and if they had an empty room they would do so.
There's not an easy way out of this for Cain. It would have been easier for him if he'd confronted this "head on" from the beginning. Now he's going to have to do some leg-work.

Yeah.. no... that just doesn't fly.

On guard can only tell the truth, the other can only lie, and you only get one question. EXCEPT, in this case, both of the guards can only lie.

If the guy was constantly hitting on women, then he must have been successful with SOME of them - no? For every bunch of women who were offended and refused, surely some went along to get promoted or whatever? He's such a horndog, always on the prowl, yet there's no Herman Cain affair scandal? Why? You would think he would be having woman after woman the way he allegedly behaves. Something does not add up.
Is it possible that Cain just likes the innuendo and flirting, the intimacy (dinners, etc), but never actually has sex with the women? As strange as that sounds, given what we know, it would fit.
Also, why aren't there accusations from before and after his time at the NRA? That doesn't make sense either. A guy doesn't just behave like that for a few years - and not in the years before/after his NRA stint.
I stand by my claim that Herman Cain is not being truthful. He is not fully disclosing. To me, that is the most obvious part of this entire silly affair. He has contradicted himself many times and he just won't answer the questions in a straightforward fashion. He is deflecting and distracting too. Nope. Cain is definitely not telling the truth. But what is he hiding?
What IS the truth here? That he's a lonely man who maybe has a rich inner fantasy world? That he doesn't realize how women perceive his comments and behaviour? That he's a lech? A womanizer - though no affairs/mistress?
The truth is most likely something in-between all the stories.

He is not. He leans towards a conclusion that many here don't like, but he at least tries to be fair. A lot of people here, many of whom should know better, don't read well or try to understand what the other person is trying to say, and run rough-shod over a nuanced argument in order to denounce what they think they other person is arguing. I have been on the wrong end of such an exchange myself, and see it happen all the time in the comments.
The problem is that when one defends oneself against such attacks, the tendency is to end up defending the position that the other side assigns you instead of the one which you actually believe. That is what is happening with Ace, I think: he gets angry at being called names by a bunch of manichaenistic fatheads, and doubles down, getting more people angry at him, which leads to more arguing, etc., etc. He seems to be avoiding the comments now, which is probably a good thing.

I still think there's some real 'there' there. In fact, he may well be lying through his teeth about everything he said at this press conference.
But he seemed honest. I mean, I have pretty long-term experience watching lying politicians, and if he's lying then he's the best we've seen since Bill Clinton. Maybe he's pathologically good at it. Maybe. Maybe it's possible that the allegations are true, but he's somehow CONVINCED himself he's innocent, which makes it easy for him to lie so convincingly. But I gotta tell you, as a guy who has been as up-front as anybody about thinking Cain was guilty, his performance today gave me pause. He seemed genuine. "Seemed" is a subjective term, of course, but then again...remember Dominique Strauss-Kahn? Every single one of us had practically sent him to the electric chair before it finally emerged that the entire charge was a fraud, a shakedown. So it does make one wonder.
I guess I'm waiting for more shoes to drop. Cain committed himself heavily here, and Kraushaar and the other women may now come out in retaliation for his dismissal of their claims as being 'baseless.' Maybe more evidence emerges that sinks him. I STILL think he's done some rather hinky stuff...you don't accumulate 4+ accusers without anything to the charges whatsoever.
But his supporters will be buoyed by this performance, and rightly so: because he came across well.

You're absolutely right. If this were a courtroom. It's not. It's public opinion. And, believe it or not, if we really could come up with 100 women who claimed to have been harassed by Barack Obama, who is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure, and they did not immediately look untrustworthy, it would bring down his administration. At the very least, he'd seriously have to deal with it.
But we don't do that. Because it's wrong.
So, in the court of public opinion: yes, 100 women (or even just one or two more, really) are probably enough that- even in some of his supporters' eyes- that much accusation = proof.

Short of Cain laying his hand on a stack of Bibles and fully confessing that he's completely guilty of the accusations, his defenders won't believe their legitimate. They've already become too vested in their defense of Cain.

Let me try again, then, Ace: I don't know if he's guilty. His current actions tell me he's guilty of something- though probably not to the level he's been accused. I don't actually have to "come down" on one side or the other, because his guilt will never be proved, nor will he ever be fully exonerated- because this will never go to court.
My point is that his handling of this is a serious issue, inasmuch as it speaks bad things about him as a candidate.
You knew this was going to happen several weeks or months ago. That indicates that Cain knew it would happen even before that. Potentially years ago. Then, when it did happen, Cain didn't just "mess up the handling," which would be bad enough for a presidential candidate (remember, Perry is to be ignored because he didn't perform well in debates- despite his impressive record in Texas), but he acted guilty. He:
* Didn't stick to a single story
* Attempted to deflect attention from the story to a political rival
* Claimed the attacks were racially motivated
That's beyond merely "handling it badly," it's an indication of guilt- that his character is not what he wants us to believe. Okay, so that's normal for a politician, film at 11, right? Except that he's also trying to run as the "Christian Conservative," which makes such character flaws much more important.
So, yes, I think his mishandling of the issue is actually more important- politically speaking- than his actual guilt or innocence. It's yet one more piece of evidence (on top of 9-9-9, right of return, trading GITMO detainees {"hostages"} for American troops, etc.) that he would make a lousy president.
Anyway, sorry to call out someone "on my side," but I think this middle position is a punt and an evasion.
No, please. Call me out (rationally). I'd rather argue my point (and have to back it up) than just say it.

Yes, his performance was impressive and believable and hell, you ever hear anyone quite so believable as Jimmy Swaggart, for example? There are certain emotional buttons you can press in humans if you know how. Dominique Strauss-Kahn didn't ... and preacher Cain does. But I don't care about that; I care about what he said.
Am I the only one who noticed he said he had never seen that woman before, the one he saw with Allred, and then went on about a long litany of times he had either seen her, or even been aware of her, when she used to work for him? (Or that she confronted him a little over a month ago?)
But he made those wildly contradictory statements with really fantastically bang-on body language and a wooing voice, I'll grant you that.

If Cain is telling the truth sexual harrassment never would have made it into the settlement agreements. They would have agreed to part ways and had the standard NDA in the agreement for a certain amount. They are benign agreement with no fault either way saying you will keep quiet and this agreement settles any and all claims you may have against the company.
Posted by: robtr at November 08, 2011 06:34 PM (MtwBb)
Yeah, I'm asking a complete "what if" scenario here. What if the sealed information the NRA has does talk about the allegations? What if some of the other accusers make claims about what Cain did to them, and the information in the settlements is released and it follows the same pattern? If all they are is "you can't talk about this" then the NDA wouldn't make much difference.

>>>So-- did they spread lies to their friends so they'd have corroboration when they sprang this on Cain?
>>>It seems kind of preposterous to me that people conspire like that, plotting political hit jobs to happen 15 years in the future.
Yeah, this is the hiccup I can't get past either. It's one thing when Anita Hill emerges from the mists of the past to make an otherwise completely uncorroborated allegation against Clarence Thomas (one which didn't even come close to seriousness of these), and not only spoke to NOBODY about it at the time but followed Thomas to another job after the supposed harassment.
It's another thing entirely where there's SO MUCH contemporaneous evidence. So many people told at the time, by each of the accusers, actual written settlements and payouts...unless Karen Kraushaar's got a working set of flux capacitors, this shit can't really have been retroactively faked to take down a rising GOP candidate, now can it?

How is that different from where we are today except instead of a single detailed accusation, we have 4 or 5.
And Cain denies them all.

Not really, dude. He was pretty unscripted. Handled the Q&A portion really well too.
Look, at this point I agree with Ace that there's so much circumstantial evidence already out there that SOMETHING has to have happened. I'm not off the "guilty" train or anything. But I'm just saying that Cain's performance today was so unexpectedly smooth -- even to someone like me who had already basically written him off -- that I'm forced to posit another 'node' in this theory. I like Clubber Lang's theory the best, even though it's wildly speculative (though it does square with the Dan Riehl/NY Times post Ace excerpted in an earlier thread about Cain's supposedly overweening ego). It would explain the ability to lie so convincingly: the guy honestly doesn't think he's lying.

Thank you for saying it.
Look, if Cain is innocent, then I owe him a huge apology and not just to him. But if he's guilty of all this stuff, and it's very much looking that way to me, then he is not a good man!
My attacks on Cain and Cain's supporters have risen in emotional tempo the more he reminds me of the sociopath and sexual abuser, Clinton. I didn't like his supporters much either.
But Clinton was a good liar. Cain's not even that. They are both very charismatic, and I suppose that's what people care about and what pulls the wool over their eyes, that and their power.
But damnit. It took others to show Clinton was lying. A repeat of Cain's news conference and his own words is all that's needed to show that he's lying. Unless that voice stirs the old cockles again. In which case, use a computer sim voice, and then I think you'll be able to notice the obvious lies in Cain's words, without necessary recourse to any third party.
Cain's news conference was the dark side of The Force equivalent of, "These are not the droids you're looking for."

It is the current equivalent of calling someone a Nazi. It means - "I disagree with you but am unable or unwilling to argue rationally."
From a Cain sort of supporter.
1. Before this event, Cain was a seriously flawed candidate like the whole rest of the field.
2. His handling of this is consistent with the seriously flawed candidate he demonstrated himself to be.
3. Loyalty is admirable, but when it stretches to denying reality and attacking dissenters without logical argument but instead with hyperbole and unfair accusations, in a word you are unreasonable, you convince no one favorably, and in fact convince many people unfavorably.
Here is some reality.
1. Cain had sexual harassment accusations on record. We either did this dance today, or waited until next October, where a poor performance by Cain gives Obama a second term. I'd rather get it done now.
2. Whether you ultimately believe any of the accusations or not, it is not unreasonable to believe them.
3. Not everyone who puts the preponderance past 50% is an ardent Romney supporter with secret machinations on destroying Cain. Those folks act like Random.
4. It is ultimately Cain's responsibility to defend Cain's reputation while we are in the primary. It is unreasonable to expect every conservative writer and commentator to defend Cain to the bitter end. Just as much as we don't want the establishment to make our pick for us, we shouldn't want the commentators to make our pick either.
Now I think Ace rushed to judgment on this. I think he would love to see Herman's campaign end because Herman is technically a very weak candidate who will be extremely hard to sell to the middle, but, I personally don't think that's why he came with the prolly guilty verdict so soon.
If Cain remains the most viable !Romney after this debacle I will continue to support him. If another candidate rises to be the best viable !Romney I will support them instead.

I love how people are trying to explain away the "I never met her thing." "Well, even if he did meet her, he met her at a conference where he met a lot of people."
That may be so, but the story that came out <i>before Herman Cain ever denied meeting her</i> was that they talked for two or three minutes, where she was whispering in his ear, and then she stormed away. That should be unusual enough for him to recall meeting her.
If his defense is, "I meet so many women who whisper into my ear for minutes at a time and then storm away," he has bigger problems than we know about.

I realize you probably never had a hot chick try to blow you in a car though, so wouldn't understand.
The rest of us normal humans actual have had sex, though. And we enjoy remembering being young and making out in a car.
The other day, well yesterday, I was commenting in a lighter mood, with sexual stories aplenty, probably overly much (but then, no such thing as too much sex as far as I'm concerned).
Today, however, I watched a guy obviously lie in his news conference in that he contradicted what he said in the beginning of his conference in both the middle and end of his conference.
And I even have stalwart Jeff B. tell me how awesome he performed. I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone or something.

699 - I appreciate that ace, but it seems to me you, of all people, might be more understanding of conservative distrust of the media.
To me, the media could have dropped this story, Cain explained it away, and I would have given no credence to it. What I do give credence to is Cain's inability to explain it away and his inconsistent stories in trying to do so. Cain himself has done more than anyone else to convince me there is likely something to this story.

I don't see how he could be the most viable non-Romney guy.
No I don't. And if it comes to that, and it might, it will not be easy or pretty after this.
When I say "most viable" it means the one with the most chance to actually beat Romney in the primary, not the candidate who is not Romney who would most likely win the general. I'd have to give that to Perry currently. Unfortunately he doesn't have enough support to beat Romney, so his viability in the general is kind of academic.

Right, and I sure as shit didn't say that I now think he's innocent. In fact, I said that given the preponderance of evidence we already have it's MORE likely that he's a quasi-sociopathic liar, for god's sake. But I'm just trying to be dispassionate in my analysis, which leads me to acknowledge that the dude did well today. It was a good performance. His supporters are looking for some reason to believe. He gave them that 'something' today. I expect more shoes to drop in this kerfuffle, and when they do the situation will no doubt change, but for now he's stanched the bleeding.
Not to revert to my typical douchetastic form, but dear god I really fucking mean this: I don't look at developing events through rose-colored glasses of "how I want things to be." I take them and try as best I can to analyze them as they really are, regardless of whether that cuts against my preferred narrative or not. For the life of me, I just don't understand why other people don't try to do the same thing. Ace DOES, which is pretty much the primary reason I've been such a long-time commenter here: he has his partisan leanings, but he's remarkably good about not letting them overwhelm his bullshit detector and his objective analytical capacity.

staunch conservative Christian (it's relevant, since I think quite a bit of the animosity toward Romney is based on his Mormonism) opposition to Romney.
Not to start another massive argument, but this staunch conservative Christian has no objection to Romney's Mormonism per se, but strongly, strongly objects to being called a bigot for refusing to consider Mormonism a legitimate variety of Christianity. Mormons seem to be decent enough people, but what they believe and what Christians have believed for the last 2000 years are quite different.

I think he could be, yes. Not a very likely one by any stretch, but if Obama's in bad enough shape a year from now even Cain could be viable.
It would be funny as hell if he ended up getting the nomination. This blog would have some serious 'splainin' to do. And I think this is why Ace is so full-tilt berserker on this particular hobby horse of his; he's gone so all-in on this "Herman Cain, sex abuser!!!1!!11!!" smear that he can't possibly walk it back and support Cain if he ended up being the nominee. Therefore, Cain MUST be destroyed. There really isn't a choice now.
If Ace really wanted to be honest with us he'd just come out and admit that his ego is at stake here, but instead, for the foreseeable future, we're going to get eight posts a day about hotel receipts and an ocean of butt-hurt in the sidebar. Oh well.

I worked for Cain on his last campaign. I've met Cain, and I know lots of people who know Cain, have known Cain and have been around Cain in situations that would make a hobo hunt look tame. But in all those situations the man was nothing but tolerant and a little bemused at the goings on around him. I know you don't know anything but what people are telling you. People with an agenda. But you are pure as the driven snow and only doing what you YOU feel is in the best interests of the party. Pity that. Because for all your 'Cain doesn't know the issues stuff' there are plenty of other stories on the net that disprove many of those claims. But whatever. There are interests on both sides of the aisle that are invested in keeping an outsider out of Washington.

Remember him, folks? Olympic bomber suspect? The media convicted him in no time flat. He was stone-cold, irrefutably guilty, too. Everyone in America knew it, just as everyone knows that Cain is, in Ace's words, a "Sex Assault Moron".
Except that he wasn't guilty, at all. Eric Rudolph was. But it didn't matter; by the time Rudolph was convicted, Richard Jewell's name and reputation had been thoroughly destroyed and he could never fully get them back. He died at age 44.
Ace doesn't have to worry about his personal name and reputation when he tries to do to Herman Cain what Tom Brokaw did to Jewell. He posts this horseshit as "Ace".

He's certainly not a desirable candidate for those reasons. As for viable, I think he could be for the very simple reason that Obama's such a bad bet next year, even Herman Cain (who has basic likability on his side) could beat him, barely.
But no, I don't want him as president. I don't like seeing him mowed down like this, either.

I think the problem, if it is a problem, is that some sense ace a little too quick to jump on the media bandwagon targeting Cain, as if ace were unaware of the decades of leftist smearing of conservatives. Perhaps this is why ace acted so defensively to comments apparently made about the subject by Rush.
This has little to do with supporting Herman Cain for the nomination--at least in my case.
It is about resisting the leftist media--not to the point of discarding fact, but demanding a bit more before accepting the liberal media paradigm, to borrow a Rushism.
And sorry to say, this is a cultural battle, and has been for decades.

That is another thing that bothers me about Cain, is that he did not spend enough time studying the issues before he jumped into this race. He was better at the Cain-Gingrich debate but still made some bad mistakes. If he wants to be a serious candidate and not just the Not-Romney, he needs to spend more time learning about policy.

And you are almost certainly wrong. You aren't thinking clearly about how this will play out. Let's imagine the worst (or, from your perspective, best) case scenario: a panel of accusers goes public tomorrow, making their settlement agreements public. Then new accusers emerge. Cain refuses to allow the DC Hilton to release their records concerning the room upgrade (I agree it's a big deal).
And then what? The same people who are blubbering now about "hit jobs" and "character assassination," including the Limbaughs and Levins of the world, will continue singing their tune. Nothing short of Herman Cain getting up there and admitting, outright, "Yes I did it, I'm such a poon-hound," would alter that. They are as committed as anyone can be -- MORE committed than you are, in fact, because although you admit you have ego invested in this I don't doubt for a second that if somehow all the charges were to fall apart and really look like frame-ups that you would back down.
You will never get the vindication you think you deserve on this one. Never. So don't expect it.

I would call it the rugby scrum. All that's needed is a lefty to toss in the football and our team kills each other to pick up the ball and score an own goal. It's the melee that is killing our side, not an adherence to proper thoughts. Rule of law not rule of men, now we could be accused of being guilty of that. Cause without rule of law we are no better than the progs. And we aren't advocating that.
Those rushing to judgment on any candidate on 4 or 6 or 10 'anythings' thrown out by 'anyone' should take a long hard look at exactly what 'the rule of law' means in this context. Everyone has an agenda and strict adherence to our principles including the rule of law will mitigate those agendas gaining purchase.

Last night people were saying the Republican field was so weak and unappealing cause the honchos of the Republican party had decided to give BO his second term so they could come out like gangbusters in 2016 with folks like Marco Rubio. If you notice a hit piece recently appeared about Rubio and for good measure george snufflupagus had an embarrassing interview with Romney...cause maybe he's next up on the hit parade or maybe he's the candidate the dems most want to run against. Who knows.
But hey in this 7 dimensional chess game called politics they boxed herman cain in, you either believe him or you don't.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Herman Cain says he'd be willing to
take a lie detector test to prove he's being truthful when he says
he has never behaved inappropriately with anyone.
But he says he won't submit to such an examination without a
good reason.
FWIW.
Yeah. He said that in the presser.
He also said he had no idea who the woman with Allred was, had never seen her before in his life.
Then he went on to detail how he remembered when she left his company a decade and a half earlier, how she reported to his VP, that he had office interactions several times with her at NRA headquarters, and that she attended meetings with him as a member of a group. He didn't mention, as it happens, that witnesses report she confronted him at a Tea Party event a little over a month before he saw her on TV accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior, and he had no idea who she is.
But apparently Cain performed magnificently, and this press conference was a huge win.
Or something.

CEOs don't get to the top of the food chain by being loveable, gentle giants. At minimum they are arrogant, selfish and have huge egos despite any superficial charm. At worst they are sociopaths. In fact, they have the highest number of sociopaths by group in all professions.
People assume they "know" others based on superficial interactions or media presence. You can't. Even your friends and family members will surprise you in certain situations.

I'm not alone in saying I choose neither. I'll vote so I can help all the republicans on the ballot but if it's Perry or Romney I refuse to vote for either one. It's my vote, it's my right. If the Republicans can only put up the desired candidate of a few insiders then the many will probably want to teach them a lesson. They seem to have forgotten that time a couple years back when Republican voters just stayed home.

You can criticize any damn hero you want.
I guess I had hoped your criticism of Rush was based on some bad thing he had done. I still have no idea what your beef is with him and that's why it seems small and petty.
As far as being a hit-job, and true at the same time, I guess what I mean is Politico's initial story was an attempt to damage Cain based on, at the time, anonymous sources for which Politico reaped some well-deserved criticism which, in turn, caused it to go into panic mode printing a new Cain story about nothing every 30 seconds or so. And then, later, named sources come forward and we conclude that indeed Cain is guilty of sexual harassment. Our ultimate conclusion that Cain is guilty does not excuse or forgive Politico's shoddy journalistic hatchet job designed soley to inflict damage to Cain's campaign.
It's been a long day. Does this make sense?

Dude, are you ever naive. Some friend tells you that she has a friend that claimed that Herman Cain sexually harassed her and got a settlement and there was another one that did, too. You don't know the details but surely where there is smoke there is fire so you lob a grenade in to see if anything else floats to the top and VOILA a pattern of harassment emerges. Lin Wood, attorney at law, sues all involved and it turns out the lady #1 was really offended by the 'how high' hand gesture lady #2 turns out to have been claiming something that turns out Cain's wife was at the apartment when she claims he took her there, but they paid her off cause who wants a disloyal and lying puke on staff lady #3 well, she's batfrisch crazy and #4 rescinded her claims.... in 2015 the NYT publishes a column on page 12 "Cain exonerated" - settlement in the $7 figures. Life goes on. Except the NRA is bankrupt, the women are toast and Cain quotes some dude about where to go to get his reputation back and donates the money to his church.

Does anyone really think he'd have the fan base he does if he went all Bill Buckley, Charles Krauthammer or Milton Freidman? Hell no he wouldn't. When it comes to a choice between giving his fans what they want, or telling them what they don't want to hear, he'll pick the former almost every time- hence his commercial success.

Just so you know, Cain is serious about winning the nomination and he is not at all in it to throw it to Romney. That's why he spent the weekend in Alabama where they vote on March 13, 2012--after Super Tuesday. Because that is where all the serious candidates are, only the stupid ones are in IA, NH, SC, FL or NV. That Cain, he's in it to win it, alright. After the vote in Alabama on the 13th of March, Cain will endorse McCain Romney by the 31st, totally out of the blue--'cause all real, true conservatives support Romney.

Truthfully, with the exception of Cain, no one else is really up for the job. But then again, my conception of the job is cutting the government, getting rid of whole department starting with the Department of Education. Cutting the number of federal employees at least in half. I'm not interested in voting for a romney who try and tweak the present system or a perry who will be in way way way over his head. he can't get the feds to do something about the border now, he's an ineffective leader. Would be nice if he could point to having the border controlled to land him the presidency.
You should also check out the stores by some reporter about his religious stuff. It's giving a lot of people the creeps. It's probably not factual or right, it's probably a total hit job but, it's out there and people are believing it. I've posted the links a while back. I thought it should be addressed head on which is why I posted the links. Instead I was treated to vilification and threatened with my life. The company is liable under law for the actions of their employees, as is the employee themselves. While I respect what you describe of your work history and the action you took, I wouldn't disrespect a woman for suing for genuine sexual harassment.
Why should she have to suck some old guy's cock, and not only - say - her husband's in order to get a job, a raise, a position, or keep a position, or what have you? For that matter, why should women who aren't attractive enough to even receive the offer have to work at a place where this goes on and they lose out financially and career-wise as a result?
This behavior is shit, and if a company gets sued over it, good. If the behavior is coming from the CEO, well then hell yeah, sue the friggin' company if this happens.
Or not. Your choice. But I sure as hell wouldn't slag a woman for it.

ace he leaves it there on the table. Why doesn't he just say he wants to get rid of it? I know too many people who have been invaded by the IRS over the AMT. They are having to pay money on payment plans cause they didn't realize they were going to have to pay the AMT. If he leaves both plans in place he leaves an opportunity for the next dem president to repeal his flat tax and go back to dem business as usual, including the AMT.

Ace,
Not that you should give a darn for what I think, but I appreciate you, and I agree with you that I have been discouraged by the "conservative media" response to the allegations, in that acknowledging that there might be something to the charges somehow brands you a traitor to the party. I don't buy the fact that just because the left goes all out for their own people and is willing to forgive any sin, as long as it is the right guy, that the right should be doing it too. (For what its worth, I don't think even the left would be doing this for a pre-nominee candidate; they were brutal to Howard Dean, because he wasn't "their guy" yet).
I also resent the charges that I have heard often, that X candidate's supporters want the charges to be true. I would love for there to be an awesome candidate that everyone loves; I don't think it has happened in the history of any primaries I remember. (I'm old enough to remember quite a few, but not a ton).
I have a slightly different take on Rush. I think the biggest thing is that Cain originally came out with a complete denial, which given the history of the media, I can forgive Rush for crediting. But then Cain's story started changing, and getting weirder and more inconsistent. For better or worse, opinion guys hate to be "wrong" on an issue, because it affects their credibility in the future. So as Cain's defense became more tortuous, so did Rush's defense of Cain, because Rush couldn't be "wrong" in fully defending Cain. I think the best thing he could have done was to either avoid jumping in, or when Cain's story began getting odd, to say "I was quick to rush to judgment, which given the media's history is understandable, let's see how this pans out. I think he effectively foreclosed the latter option when he decided to accept advertising from the Cain campaign, which in my mind was a horrible decision. Then he couldn't say, maybe there is something wrong here, because "hey, remember that sweet, sweet money we paid to advertise on your show?" I think Rush backed himself into a corner regarding Cain, and the result is this "older conservatives like me (who are getting paid directly by the Cain campaign) don't fall for the media hype."
Anyway, this post is too long. Know that you have supporters.

I understand that. Look maybe perry ought to be the candidate that promises complete repeal of the AMT. Honestly my friend the nurse married to the cop was horrified to receive the registered letter from the IRS telling them they owed the AMT. One of my other friends said to her "I told you, you shoudl have used turbo tax" but that wasn't the point. The point was that the tax wasn't supposed to be applicable to the nurse and the cop, they are middle class. It was supposed to be applicable to the very very rich. It's now descending on the middle class and people really don't like it. See BO got his "if you make two hundred thousand" extra tax by using the AMT and the republicans inside the beltway let him get away with it. Maybe if one of the 8 decides to address the AMT head on, maybe they will turn a few heads in their direction.

They've been overlong (but you've done that before) and they've been tedious and nit picky (but you've done that before).

You were just so f'ing tight ass about it all.
I guess Perry's fall and then this kinda put you in a funk, huh?
Well the last two columns were amusing (as they should be) and disrespectful and witty so that's when I realized what was missing in the other columns about Cain and his trials and tribulations.
Welcome back. Hope you stay awhile. That "other" Ace is a tightass dickwad and I'd rather not see him anymore.

Sister, I'm with you. At one and only one company (a big one that made the HR Sexual Harassment Officer position a big one and she needed something to do), I had two sexual harassment allegations against me. One 'cause I asked a girl, a co-worker, on a date. She said no. I let it slide. Never asked her again. And that was it.
It was "investigated", and dropped.
Another 'cause, if I understand correctly, I scratched my nuts.
And women are capable of outright malice, not just stupid shit as above. I get that.
I'm talking more about serious, actual sexual harassment, which is a real concept, I believe.
Frankly, I wouldn't want my wife to have to choose between losing her job in a tight economy or eating out her lesbian boss's pussy. Nor would it be proper for me to have to choose whether to take a dick up my ass (or a pussy in my face) to keep my job and be able to feed my family, if I had one.
That's what I'm talking about, that and way over the top hostile workplaces.
Not the odd sex joke or someone dating someone else at the office or giving someone a compliment.

Yes, I agree people like yourself are incapable of arguing honestly. I defend only Ace's right to put forth his argument even though it's very flawed. Something is amiss and it is called evidence. Mrs Bialek wanted advice, well get it over the phone! Herman to Bialek, sorry don't remember you lady. We need records from 14 years ago, provide them Mr Cain. Bizatch show me some of your receipts from 14 years ago, uh uh, yeah that's what I thought.
I swear I gotta practice that move he allegedly pulled, hand up skirt from across from the drivers seat and hand on the head bring it to crotch, gonna call it the ole Bialek. Near impossible to do but hey, where there is smoke there has to be fire right! I mean that's a crotch grabbing head to crotch from drivers to passenger seat while leaning over the emergency break to get to her goodies and bring the head down. Makes total sense until you try it!

Cain loves Romney.
Cain rises
Cain falls.
Cain drops out and endorses Romney
Cainiacs don't see it coming and explode in a violent explosion so violently explosive I run out of repetitive uses of both words to describe the viosplosiveness.

By March 31, 2012. And I don't want to hear one damn word from you "conservatives" when it happens. We kept telling you Cain would do it. He has--over and over and over--telegraphed this what he will do. I mean, for fuck's sake, he's in Alabama while Perry and Romney are in Iowa. Yeah, real serious candidate for the nomination.
And when Romney give a great concession speech, go ahead and cuddle with that warm glow of "if only Cain would've stayed in" and keep telling yourself the lies.

It shouldn't be a shock. The National Restaurant Association is a notoriously GOP-friendly organization: their big issues are lobbying against the minimum wage, national health care and anti-smoking regulations, after all.

Then I injured my back and taught myself to write "C/UNIX" programs and found a job on Wall St in the 90's.
I thought "wow"! there are good looking women everywhere on every floor of the building. I saw a target rich environment.
Unfortunately none of these women had any interest in any men around them and neither did the men.
There were a few very well publicised transgressions, but in 20 years I rarely saw anything that would make a water cooler story.
Its just all in our dreams, or on TV but it isn't in reality.

I will wager anyone he will ONLY take a lie detector test in his lawyer's office with an examiner his lawyer chose and with a designated and limited list of questions. IF then.
Money is rolling in, though. Of course, our party is filled with suckers - Christine O'Donnell is still living off your contributions from last year, and I'm betting there is a strong overlap on their donors.
But stick with that Clinton plan of smearing the victims, y'all. Stay classy.

Cain says willing to take lie detector test
November 08, 2011 18:16 EST
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Herman Cain says he'd be willing to
take a lie detector test to prove he's being truthful when he says
he has never behaved inappropriately with anyone.
But he says he won't submit to such an examination without a
good reason.
FWIW.

Oh, so Mr. "I am too serious about winning the GOP nomination" is in Arizona? You mean the state that doesn't have a primary until Febuary 28th? A week before Super Tuesday and therefore, ignored by everyone else? After IA, NH, SC, FL and NV? Meanwhile, both Romney and Perry were in Iowa today.
But Cain really, really, really, really is serious about running for the nomination.
And he will endorse Romney by March 31, 2012.

988- here's the thing with that. I get the Christine O'Donnell vote. Would I rather it have been someone with some degree of competence? Yes. But I totally get people looking at Mike Castle, and saying "If we are going to have a senator who is licking Obama's boots, it may as well be a Democrat." Imagine the disappointment you feel when Brown, Snowe, Collins, and Lugar go with the Dems, now imagine them going with the Dems a lot more because Castle is more liberal than any of them and would have given them more cover to vote with the Dems. I totally get that.
I don't get the level of Cain support, however. It's not only that he doesn't have a conservative record, it is that when he is not on a script he talks like a moderate to liberal republican: pro-choice, pro-gun control, willing to negotiate with terrorists. And even when he is on script he is not conservative on fiscal issues: 9-9-9 adds a VAT & national sales tax, it also has wealth redistribution in the form of "entitlement zones."
The only things where Cain could be a conservative are things where he has offered no plan or a plan that is not patently offensive and ridiculous. Immigration: we will kill all incoming aliens. (Has he said anything about what he plans to do with those already here?); Foreign policy (I'll figure that out eventually, but not until I am president, or at least the nominee); Deficit Reduction: 9-9-9 - ??? - Deficit reduction! (By the way, "Defined contribution? wtf is that? Is that even a thing?")
So his conservative credentials are fairly suspect. but somehow he is the great conservative hope, who also thinks Romney has the right plan for America.

The (apparent) speed which the "settlements" were paid to the women in 1999.
Do you think that any company is gonna chuck five figures at every woman that comes through the HR door with a "complaint" of feeling uncomfortable around a particular male co-worker? Really? And in just a few months after the complaint is made? Without any "witnesses" or corroborating testimony?
It's not real world to believe that. They would have dozens of settlements per year if it was so easy-breezy. Women would get jobs just so they could get settlements a few months later, then go home and live off that money instead of working.
The SPEED at which these settlements were paid out is a big red flag. Huge.

When someone at any of the Wall Street firms I worked for started trouble over anything , especially with an upper level manager, we would "boot" them in one day and pay them the standard 3-6 month salary. Standard practice.

998 - No, you don't get it.
It doesn't matter that this story didn't go away because Cain couldn't answer the question. (The ability to communicate clearly only matters when Perry flubs a debate answer.) It doesn't matter that Cain has changed his story numerous times. (Changing your answer numerous times only matters when Romney does it.) It doesn't matter that (unless you believe a whole bunch of women at different points in life decided to say that Cain sexually harassed them so that they, having access to the federal government mandated crystal ball, could rehash those charges years later when he was running for president) was flirty around women other than his wife, that only matters when Newt does it. What matters is that the media is reporting this story, and because they are reporting it, it is false. Even if Cain comes out and admits to doing something, it is because he is complicit with the media in bringing about his own demise, and he still would be the best candidate for office. Why doesn't it matter? Because few, if any, people who are voting for Herman Cain are voting for the actual man of that name, they are voting for the magical idea of a man they have determined that he is, any evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.

Idiots flocked to Christine because she was pretty. That's all it was. She kept over $1 million in her campaign account which she is now living on, legally, when she lost by a whopping margin. Only suckers gave her money.
The similarity with Cain is only the devotion of the followers. Once committed to her, they could never be convinced she wouldn't win. Palin's endorsement may have sealed the deal for some of them, but they would never listen to reason.
Similarly, Cain's supporters seem all to willing to use the old Clinton Smear Machine playbook to attack his attackers, smear his accusers, and criticize their lawyers. If he were caught tomorrow morning standing over a dead girl with a blood-dripping knife in his hand, his supporters would blame the liberal media.

No, I think it was more the religious, faith-based thing.

I pointed this out while she was raising it. No one cared. They just gave more.

Oh, also I think it was an attraction by relatively low IQ voters to a candidate who was marginally, but not too much, smarter than them. I.e., someone they could look up to, but still relate too. Same thing with Huckabee, Palin, O'Donnell, Angle, Bachmann, Cain, whomever.Of course, there is a proven inverse correlation between IQ and religiosity, so my original point was related to my second point.
