CaliGrump Update
— Code Red

I know a lot of people are concerned about CaliGrump, so I wanted to re-post this message from his brother that was posted in the comments section:

All,

I don't know how to reach Ace or any of the other bloggers/commenters so I'll announce it here. My brother is GrumpyCali and I just heard from my niece that he just walked into the Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco.

I talked to her and she hopes this will be a major turning point in his life. He has a lot of people who love him and there's no shame in struggling because we all have, or will struggle eventually. I wanted to thank all the beautiful people on this site for the outpouring of love for a stranger.

When he gets better, I'm sure he will thank all of you for it. You recognized what was happening early on and may have saved his life from the prayers and love. I've never commented before and I provided my email address in the box provided so that I can be reached there by any of the moderators for confirmation that I am his brother. Thanks for everything, you all did a wonderful job and my family and I appreciate it.

EM

-Warden

1 That's great to hear. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

2 God hears prayers.  I will pray for CG and his family.  Having recently lost a brother, there is no amount of gold that could ever replace him.  Same with CG.  Get well brother.  You have more people in your corner than you'll ever know.

8 Best news I've heard today, on a personally fretful one.  I caught, but did not comment on the other thread, but put him in my prayers.  Bless you guys.

Arhooley is the real hero here.  If I followed the thread this afternoon right, he tracked down CaliGrumps home phone and called and talked to CaliGrump's wife.

Big, big kudos to Arhooley who intervened and maybe saved....

I once lost someone very close to me because of depression and suicide

Just well done.

41 "I wanted to thank all the beautiful people on this site for the outpouring of love for a stranger."

point of order: he's not a stranger, he's kin.

we are all have two families: one we are born to, and have little say about.

the other we chose, and it says everything about us.

Like we all keep saying, it will probably take a little time for him to want to talk, but if we can send him something let us know.

And if he ever feels up to it we can have a Moron Meetup in the area. I'm only a few hours away and mostly good to travel (as long as they don't increase the Carvedilol again). I'm up for it, especially if it's to bring goodies and cheer to CG.

And thanks again for taking it on yourself, arhooley, I don;t know if it helped CG but it sure as Hell helped all of us.

66 Yes, Cali grump made a key first step in posting here, including his name. From that we were able to track down his phone number in just a few minutes. And arhooley made the calls from there. Wtg the both of you.

Thanks again for the update.

68 So what kind of hospital is the Kaiser Hospital?

Kaiser Permanente. It's a large HMO here in California that's unique because it owns all of its own hospitals and clinics. People either love them or hate them -- love them because everything is integrated and seamless for your records, i.e. your pharmacist instantly knows what your physician prescribes you, your specialist automatically gets their records -- or hate them because they literally will not pay for anything that is not delivered from a Kaiser-owned facility.

Usually they're not a bad deal, but my partner is in the "hate them" category, so we're with BCBS.

71 I've been lurking and praying all afternoon. Just checked in after a few hours away from the computer. Great job Arhooley! At first I felt that us morons may have been over-reacting, but after watching everything unfold... well, you absolutely did the right thing. Thank God you had that presence of mind. We will never know what would have happened without your phone call... possibly the same outcome... but its very possible that you contributed to saving a life today... and a family from pain. And either way, you and others were willing to. I'm just so happy / proud to be part of the moron nation tonight. Even if Ace is MIA.

Posted by: TimInCT at February 21, 2011 08:27 PM (E7h0w)

72 It's so funny, trying to explain to others that you are worried about someone on your blog.  This is not the first time I've worried about you morons/moronettes or prayed with all my heart for one of you.  Sometimes, in your posting, you can tell someone just isn't their regular self.  Even if they say nothing and all you can do is worry and pray.

Posted by: curious at February 21, 2011 08:32 PM (p302b)

73 I am just catching up on all of this... thank you, thank you, thank you to all who jumped in and took this seriously.  You may have prevented a large black hole from being torn in the universe.  And bless CaliGrump for having the courage to recognize a problem, man up, and deal with it.

Someone I loved and admired very much lost his life to depression.  It is a horrible illness because it LIES to you.

I am relieved and impressed that the moron nation has refrained from passing any judgments (at least not that I have read).  Too often people view emotional or mental crises as character flaws.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  In face, having the balls to confront the darkness head-on shows some serious internal fortitude.

Also, the original thread was deleted because major personal information came pouring forth that was over- the- line personal, and rather surprising that so much info could be obtained in such a short period of time.

For the protection of Caligrump,Warden, Ben and other gatekeepers did all they could as fast as possible to protect Cali from unwanted troll attention.  It was handled as rapidly and discreetly as possible. And the actions taken were laudable and appropriate under the circumstances.  Which is easy to say in retrospect. Arhooley took a major risk.  But it was a five alarm fire at the time.  He done good. He done right.
I'd pick him for my dodgeball team any day.

100 I don't comment here much, but I lurk all the time. For all the joking, teasing, flames and general BS, there are some real heroes in the moron nation. I wasn't online for any of it, but I'm very proud of the way you all reacted to a cry for help. I know that on other websites, in other situations, it has not turned out as well. CaliGrump, I've been where you seem to be. It does get better. I'm rooting for you. I'm willing to talk any hour of the day or night. I've put my real email address in this post. A lot of folks got it in their head to see what was wrong with cali grump, but arhooley got off her ass an made the call to family.  By then he was gone, but it probably led to a bunch of frantic calls to CG from his family, letting him know he's loved.

Posting a "check out" message is a cry for help.  I'm glad it wasn't just CG quitting posting.  Even more glad that he got help, and didn't hurt himself or others (since according to the family, he might have had a gun with him)

The entire moron horde deserves a pat on the back, and arhooley a medal.

God bless all of you wonderful, caring morons and moronettes.  God bless Cali Grump, and may He uphold you in the palm of His hand.  I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, Cali.  I am so glad that you are getting help.

111 Damn, I just now have read all the posts today about CaliGrump. I live less than 500yds from the town he is in. I could have been to his house in 5 min. Was home all day without a damn thing to do.

What I don't understand is why he went all the way into the Kaiser facility in SF. There are Kaiser hospitals in Walnut Creek, Livermore, Hayward and Pleasanton.
The SF facility is by far the most distant in the East Bay. And some very fine hospitals in both Pleasanton and San Ramon (but if he is a Kaiser subscriber he would have to go to a Kaiser facility).

Anyway, the good news is he got the help he needed. I wish him well and will offer up a few prayers to Our Blessed Lady to help him along.

113 Sometimes our needs are like the oil companies having to drill in such deep waters cause of regulations. Regulations by the gov make many shift the pressure to where ever the most humble point is. Hope i don't sound like an ass. Life is so sad. 114 Really good news that CG is getting some help, and really good news that a moron helped him out. But, remember folks, this isn't the end of the story. It's only beginning for CG. Let's not lose track of him. Semi-regular updates would be nice from anyone who has the means to provide them. The saga will really be over when he's posting here again. Keeping fingers crossed...

115 I read here regularly and post only on occasion.  But, I do love this blog.

And, even though it's the first time I've ever seen anything like this happen here, this is the reason why I love it so much.  There are just some things you know about certain types of people, even though they go to extraordinary lengths to avoid letting on about it.

Kudos to the morons -- particularly to arhooley, but to no lesser degree to the rest of you who seized the initiative and then took care to do what you could to protect the man's privacy as he re-ups his life lease.

No telling how many lives you all touched today.

117 Thank God he's ok. When it was revealed that he went missing with his gun, I was preparing for a really shitty day. I've had some rather heated arguments with more than a few of my fellow morons, but never would I wish anyone the fate we feared and thankfully did not come to pass. His brother is right- there's no shame in seeking help when it's needed. Many of us have been through difficulties that seemed impossible to deal with at the time, but can be overcome with the support of others. It's been famously said that what does not kill us only makes us stronger. May that hold true for CaliGrump. And good on you Arhooley. Mankind lives and dies on it's ability to care for one another.

The nurses are the ones who always inspire me, after my wife delivered our daughter it was very iffy for my wife for a few days. The people that cared for her opened my eyes to the depth of love that can exist between strangers. I know it can break down sometimes, but between regular good people its there. That's why this health care shit pissed me of so much. We all as people need less bullshit in between each other, not more. Anyway happy your ok and hope you come back soon.

176 I have to say the people who comment and post on this site are wonderful. I sort of missed the thread on this and wondered what the post about personal information was about yesterday.  You people are the best and much good blessings for GrumpyCali and his family.

Thank God.

I was afraid to come here today and learn of a tragedy of one of our own.

178 having been, and still kinda in a similar situation... this is why I add "thank you for the friends and family I am blessed with" to all my prayers. Sometimes its easier to talk to a stranger, but it's those who care that are the rock on which we can stand. Way to go Moron Life Panel. And dont sell yourself short arhooley; God's work. I am an engineer by nature and so naturally disinclined to believe; but it is times like this that explain why I do. May the warmth of being loved wash over you CaliG and heal your spirit.

179 As a longtime no-name given to occasional sock-stupidity, I don't know if my comment means any more than it ever does. But I've lived a life of profound loss that can never be truly healed... I'm so glad CaliGrump's family was spared yesterday and that Cali chose to ride that monster wave. The domino effect is unspeakably brutal.

*Thoughts*

182 Oh, and our reputation as a wretched hive of scum and villainy is just shot all to hell.

Give it a week and we will be back to our old nasty honey badger ways.

183 I hardly get the computer anymore since mongoman hogs it all the time.  Seeing this episode unfold after the fact makes it seem even more amazing.  Y'all are the best morons around, I can't think of a better group.  I wish CaliGrump a speedy recovery so he can once again enjoy the strange beauty that is AOSHQ.

184 I love all of my pretend internet friends in my computer!

Except for  <<you>>.

Ace, thank you so much for making this possible.

I know being a blogger looks super lame on a C.V. but still...

Kinda cool. No?

185 Sorry to blog whore; I just hope Warden sees this, and you other guys might be interested too, since I talk about you a little bit. It's not breaking news or anything like that. Just my own ruminations.

187 Rich,

I'm not CaliGrump's brother. CaliGrump's brother went by the name EM. I just re-posted his comments so everyone knew CaliGrump was okay.

188 I'm glad he's getting help.  Best wishes to him!
