Canadian Elections
— DrewM

Looks like Stephen Harper is not only going to remain Prime Minister, he's going to take the Conservatives from a minority government to a pretty strong majority one.

As of 10:45 p.m. ET, the Conservatives had won or were leading in about 160 seats out of the 308 in the House of Commons, five more than needed for a majority, while the New Democrats had soared past 100 and the Liberals had tumbled to about 30.

The Conservative run started in Atlantic Canada, where the Tories overtook the Liberals in the popular vote and added three of the 12 additional seats needed to ensure solid control of Parliament.

The Liberals emerged from the Maritimes scarred but alive, having dropped two seats to the New Democrats and three to the Conservatives. The Tories picked up one seat by a razor-thin margin in Newfoundland and Labrador after being shut out in the last election.

As polls had suggested, the NDP trounced the Bloc in Quebec while the Harper Tories scored big gains in Ontario at the expense of the Liberals who once owned the province federally.

The other major story seems to be the destruction of the Liberal Party and the Quebec separatist Bloc Québécois. The Liberal party which ran the country for over a decade not all that long ago (they led a minority government as recently as 2004) is going to go from 77 seats to the low 30s. The Bloc will go from 47 to about 5.

Basically the NDP is taking over Quebec.

The NDP is going to go from the 4th place party to the Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition with over 100 seats (they had 34 in the last Parliament).

This is a pretty major realignment.

The NDP is running some odd candidates that are going to win like Ruth Ellen Brosseau.

The single mother who lives in Gatineau, Que., and works in Ottawa as an assistant manager of a OliverÂ’s pub at Carleton University in Ottawa is a classic parachute candidate.

Yet there’s no sign that her parachute ever landed in Berthier-Maskinongé, a Quebec riding near Trois-Rivières that is about a three-hour drive from her home.

Local media say she has not granted any interviews and an NDP spokesman could not confirm whether she ever visited the riding.

“She is both excited and nervous,” said NDP spokesman Marc-André Viau, who has spoken with Ms. Brosseau since she returned from a previously scheduled vacation in Las Vegas. Another NDP spokesman had told The Canadian Press that Ms. Brosseau was “a little freaked out” by the sudden media attention.

“She was not ready to do a press conference, but she’s learning,” said Mr. Viau, who said she will need to “perfect” her French-language skills. “She will be learning in the days to come to be more confident to talk to media and to be a public figure. So if she’s elected, we’ll make sure that she’s ready.”

Thanks to James Schmidt for that link.

Basically the NDP just needed names on the ballots in some ridings where they figured they had no chance to win. And now a bunch of these place holders are going to be Members of Parliament. It's like taking the first 40 names from the English version of the Montreal phone book and throwing them in Parliament.

Amazing stuff.

Update: Hockey Legend Ken Dryden, who went into Liberal Party politics after his Hall of Fame career, apparently lost. That's a shame.

4 It means good! Harper is about the only world leader not dancing the AGW jig, odd thing, most Canadians are very conservative but love the Liberals, untill now, look what Rob Ford is doing in Toronto.

7 What does "conservative" mean in Canada as compared to US? The Democratic Party. The Liberals are the...Pelosi wing, and the NDP would be the Kos crowd.

10 I'll say this about the NDP:  They're frank and no B.S. about their socialism.  The Liberals (and too often the Tories) far too often fight for the same squishy middle ground and ape positions of the other.  At least Layton will be an honest broker, even if a lefty one.

Posted by: logprof at May 02, 2011 07:08 PM (a2hxi)

11 The joke going around before the election was the NDP candidates in Quebec thought it would be neat to be in an election before they had to go out (ooot?) and get a summer job. Jack! Layton, head of the NDP is a hardcore socialist, and not to be trusted, especially near Asian sex trade workers.

16 How much has the NDP sold out though to those in Quebec to score a lot of riding pickups, and what will that mean to the leadership of the party, and their long-term viability as the opposition. I don't know enough about Canada's parties to say for certain, but it seems to me having parachute candidates, or having true French candidates in Quebec as a significant bloc could cause ruffles. But then again they could fall in line like the "blue dogs" do here with the Democrats.

Meh, they're mostly Communists over there. Whether they have a separatist Communist trying to wheedle free government cheese out of the rest of the country, or a non-separatist Communist trying to the exact same thing, the important thing is the steady flow of stolen cheese.

Yep, two minorities and now this majority gov't.  The Conservatives were wiped out in the 90's thanks to former Prime Minister Brian Mulrony, who was what you'd call a 'Red Tory' which means really communist.  They deserved to be wiped out after that bastard.

Foaming at the mouth liberals have been embarrassing themselves for a while though, so that helps   ...finding themselves in a mostly Conservative country makes them think twice about biting the hands that feed their advertising budgets, heheh.

With most people, I think Harper has earned their respect...he's not extreme in any direction, so bashing him the way George Bush was bashed is bad for business.

115 One very happy Canadian here.

Surprised, too. This election shifted dramatically in the past 72 hours. Going in, Conservatives were looking at another minority govt. Then the "centrist" Liberals - Canada's oldest and most "establishment" party - completely disintegrated almost overnight. As in, gone baby gone. Same with the separatist Bloc Quebecois. The hard-left NDP (New Democrats) swept up all of those votes.

The good news is that Canadians decided a minority coalition led by the left-wing NDP was just too damn dangerous. So the Conservatives won more support than they would have under "normal" conditions. But the NDP is so radical (eg, a Provincial arm of the party considered disallowing white men from running for office - I shit ye not) that enough people up here got "scared straight."

As the official Opposition, the NDP will be an unmitigated disaster. Take everything you know about "community organizers," then subtract the Ivy League degrees and you'll get a sense of what I'm talking about.

America dodged one here, too. With the NDP leading a coalition govt you could have said goodbye to all support overseas (ie, Afghanistan). The $80 billion contract for new F-35's would have been scrapped. Trade would come under scrutiny. The whole nine yards. Cuba north.

And while I'm gloating... you think media bias is bad in the States? Up here we have a national, state-run media organization (imagine NPR, but constantly on in almost every home). Listening to the election coverage, you would have been very surprised to even learn there was such a thing as the Conservative party. Almost a media blackout. Even tonight, with a historic win, all cameras are pointed at the damn, dirty commies.

Anyway. Time to get drunk. Nighty-night.

128 Iogprof,

BC is split three ways: In the resource-based, rural regions it's pretty much a conservative/ndp split (rednecks vs. hippies/unemployed). Downtown Vancouver is a long-time Liberal stronghold, but that makes it unique in the entire west. The nicer suburban neighbourhoods surrounding the city are hard-core Conservative.

So pretty much what you'd expect anywhere, really.

131 Woohoo!

Now to reread the thread to grab questions to answer.

BTW, Log Cabin, the party that was blown away from the then-largest majority to just two seats was the Progressive Conservative Party. (Yes, it really had that oxymoronic name.) They were beholden massively to Quebec and were our Red Tory RINOs. In the aftermath of the defeat the truly conservative Reform Party grew and eventually regrouped with the more-conservative members of the former PCs to form today's Conservative Party of Canada [CPC]. They won a minority government that held for 3 years (the longest-lived minority government in hoser history) and then increased their seat count but still had a minority by 12 seats for the past 2 years. The Bloq and the Liberals [nicknamed the Grits] forced this election over nothing and were massively punished. They had figured that it would be another minority government but that the Governor-General (the Queen's representative) would ask the two or three opposition parties to form a government instead of the CPC (which would have been unprecedented in Canada or any other Western self-governing Dominion or at Westminster). So them getting burned by this is massively sweet.

Another irony is that as a minority government the CPC did alot of real compromising with the Opposition (unlike Obama) so they were getting a pretty liberal CPC policy out of it, so the lib-left blew that sweetheart situation too.

172 Although the Senate has not done anything in decades, it actually can block legislation from the House.  It cannot, like the US Senate and UK HoL, initiate money bills.

If you want a smart guy in your cabinet without running him in an election, appoint him to the Senate, since Senators can serve in cabinet.

The Senate can be interesting after elections where the HoC changes hands, since the Senate majority will reflect the prior party for at least the next year or two.

Clearly these flag waving patriotic Canadians love their country and are so happy to see the Conservatives lose seats tonight, even if they won a majority government. It's yet another vote for change, and I am so happy to see it.

It's the name, Trudeau...doesn't matter what he's like...they want to re-live their glory days.  It's starting to fade though (the name brand), so I imagine they might get desperate and run him.

I believe they have a lower corporate tax rate than us. I am damn sure that the ruling party up there is not brazenly destroying the national currency like Obama is. 200 Just like they did with the Toronto mayoral election.
Rob Ford is a Chris Christie-like fiscal conservative. He won hugely getting both the 25% or so of regular voting population that votes CPC and the ethnic vote that are anti-crime and didn't care for his opponent, the former-provincial-Liberal ex-cabinet minister who was an elitist homosexual. (Who was the MSM's darling, of course, and who spent the election wishcasting that the uncouth Ford would lose. They tried smearing him with all sorts of attacks over his obesity, claims of wife-beating etc.)

It looks like the Conservatives lost in a lot of places while still gaining seats. Is the country stratified like the US now with one party completely dominating certain areas?
No, Rocks, so you don't have to worry about that as the CPC seat gain was evenly-spread everywhere except Quebec, including big gains in liberal Toronto and Vancouver.

I still can't get over that. Who the fuck rides a bicycle to a massage parlor?
A leftist city councillor in downtown Toronto so, you know, an asshole.

Seriously, how shitty is prime-time TV when the Canadian election coverage on C-Span is the most interesting thing on?
Tell me about it, Log Cabin. The election cancelled Monday Night Curling tonight!

Do they have high speed rail yet?
Actually, our Liberals were going to push for a high-speed rail line from Quebec City (at the mouth of the St Lawrence) to Windsor (Detroit); undoubtedly with corrupt Quebec firms mysteriously winning the contracts and undoubtedly making kickbacks to the federal and Quebec Liberals.

Peter what's his face, the guy who has anchored the CBC news forever,
Peter Kent, the Gulf War's "Scud Stud" Arthur Kent's brother.

now quebec goes all out socialist to demand even more money.
But with virtually no seats in the Government, so they won't be able to pull their usual "give us what we want or we leave" blackmail.

Is he gonna start a civil war now?
Assuming you're discussing Quebec, the answer is 'no' because while the Dippers are Reds and they were promising special treatment for Quebec (at least when they were talking in French and that the MFM wasn't discussing after translating to English) they are still a federalist party and not a separatist one. Besides which, the Rest of Canada [ROC] wouldn't fight to keep them from separating--nowadays we'd boot them out.

What's British Columbia like politically?
Leftist in and around Vancouver but conservative in the interior. It's sort of like California [British California!] in that, but our first-past-the-post riding system and the like means that the conservative hinterland isn't flooded out by the townies' votes as L.A. screws CA's red districts.

Grand total of Canadian Parliament? Unicameral?
Bicameral with a 106-seat appointed Senate with next to no real powers. (I know alot of GOPers want the elected Senate amendment tossed, but in Canada with so many Grit and Red Tory governments appointing senators for life or up to age 75... now reduced to IIRC 12 years but only for new appointees... they were massively corrupt and useless. Maybe term limits and having real power as the U.S. Senate does would work out better with appointees in the States, but here conservatives want the Senate Triple-E elected; effective; and equal. [Equal because the appointees could come from anywhere and in any number so Quebec and the low-population Atlantic Provinces were massively overrepresented; Alberta with a growing population and oil and resource dollars had very few appointees.]

And a House of Commons that makes all the legislation is around 308 seats but more seats are supposed to be coming when Western and Ontario population growth is taken into account in drawing up new ridings. (Your guys are doing this in Wisconsin if I'm not mistaken, as an American example; and nationally too I think which is why it was especially important to take control of the House of Reps too?)

Now back to the rest of the thread.

208 Don't feel too bad for Ken Dryden.  He's a statist asshole, and not nearly as clever as he thinks he is.  I remember a debate I watched a few years ago between Dryden and Conservative Rona Ambrose about national daycare (the Liberals have been pushing this for decades now).

She was selling a $1K/kid/year tax credit for parents to use as they chose- day care, day homes, paying a family member, offset cost of stay-at-home-parent, whatever they wanted.  The Liberals wanted the Obamacare version of national daycare, where Canadians would shuffle their progeny off to government warehouse for even more time so both parents could work and pay more taxes.  They've tried it in Quebec (natch) and it's been a giant boondoggle money pit.

The conservative Ambrose was extolling the virtues of choice (I realize that more government cash isn't really conservative, but whatevs, this is Canada and we expect to be bribed with sweet government loot) and Dryden actually argued that this tax credit was not a good idea, because, I quote, "This doesn't encourage desired behaviors".

Well, that quote is from memory actually, and I'm trending towards hammered, but I've despised that Dryden asshole ever since, even though his hockey career should have cemented his national hero status.

Anyways, WOOOOOOOO!  <flashes boobs at concerned husband>

220 Considering that the NDP is to the left of the Liberals, I am not sure this is all that great in the long run.
Here's what I wrote about that at Kate's SDA blog, crosspatch.

...alot of the Dippers' QC seats, face it, have idiots in them with no real connection to their constituents. Those Quebeckers won't be voting NDP again (like Ontarians won't be fooled by the provincial NDP again). At the same time the QC wing of the NDP will be pretty strong and Jack in placating them will piss off his anglophone blue collar voters in the ROC. So I can see them losing half their seats to the Grits four years from now (with or without a Bloc rebirth) and not gaining another 40 seats to become the new government. They'll also have to defend their ludicrous leftist policies for the next four years; something they've never had to do ever in the past as the fourth party. [Disband the Canadian Forces? Forced nationalization of large businesses? The government owning every drop of water in the country, even rain water? etc.]

And the CPC not being beholden to Quebec in any way, shape or form means that liberal-leftist Quebec won't be overly-influencing policy the way they did in the Progressive Conservative governments' days.

Do NDP and the Libs form a voting block?
It doesn't matter with the CPC majority, but the Libs are probably pretty pissed at the Dippers over the wipeout so they probably won't cooperate. There is one possibility, the new leader of the Libs will undoubtedly be Bob Rae who used to be an NDP commie who fluked off an election win to become Premier of Ontario in the early '90s. (Where he and the Dippers completely wiped out the economy affecting it to this day.) He may try to merge the two parties (although he'd have no leverage to do so) into one liberal-leftist party similarly to the way the CPC was formed but there are alot of blue Liberals who would switch to the CPC if they tried to merge with the NDP. (Christian blue collar types; those who stupidly think the Liberals are still the 19th Century Liberals they started out as etc.) BTW, Justin Trudeau lost his seat too I'm pretty sure.

Right now Canada has the most conservative leadership in the G8 I suspect.
And Israel's biggest supporters.

"Sir, Quebec's got the bomb" was a laugh line.
Luckily, Ontario and New Brunswick have nuclear power while Quebec has (alot of) hydro.

I forget how the details work. Doesn't the winner have to go to England and prostrate themselves before the queen of England or something like that before they take control of the government?
No, the Governor-General asks the leader of the winning party to form a government. What you might be thinking about is that up until something like 20 years ago Canada used to have to send all its legislation once a year to the UK where the UK House of Commons rubber-stamped it. It was so little of a formality since 1924 that UK MPs usually wouldn't show or only backbenchers would show up and give speeches about unrelated UK legislation items.

Man, they just wanted the Libs and BQ out.
Yes, See my comment at top, above.

Heh, the CBC is like Pravda... I listen to them every day, which makes me about 1/3 the local radio audience.  You have to read between the lines to figure out what the truth is.  Plus, I'll totally enjoy my commute tomorrow, when their Political Panel ("The whole spectrum!  Commie to Far Left") gets to choke on their own tongues explaining how this really was a giant victory for Team Lefty.

For lo, though the NDP has tripled in size, it really doesn't matter for practical purposes as the Conservatives now run the show.

232 Something else that just struck me about the NDP in Quebec not having a chance to win the election four or so years from now is that for the next four or so years Quebeckers are going to be kicking themselves for not backing the strong horse winner and, so, losing out on alot of government pork. That's going to sting very badly and they're going to want to get back onto the gravy train even if its flow is radically reduced by the new CPC majority.

BTW, Rob Ford won the Toronto mayoralty by campaigning against the Gravy Train. The TEA Partiers should push that 'narrative' alot from municipal, to state to federal races.

251 Harper's son has Bieber hair? Heartache.
The five years or so ago of Harper's first minority government there was a photo op of him and his wife dropping their son off at his new Ottawa-area school. Rather than embarrassing his young son by kissing good-bye, Harper shook his hand instead. The MFM went ape, psychoanalyzing him (as was often done to Bush 43) and declaring him a borderline sociopath who cold-heartedly couldn't show affection for his son.

I "understand" parliamentary government, but I don't really "get" it. Declare no confidence in the government --  dissolve it -- call elections whenever you want -- form coalitions -- have both a president and a prime minister.

But anyway, I know I'm glad the conservatives won.

Eliminate all redistribution of wealth, pay only for a strong military, roads and that needed for economic infrastucture.

Deny climate change, eliminate all climate change funding, realise as a country that Islam is a religjion of hate, mock the pedophile Mohammed for marrying a 6 year old and fucking a 9 year old and maybe we'll talk.

I loathe the fact that I'm going to be giving up American citizenship in about 2 weeks. I'm going to be sad and horribly pissed off when I do that simply because I fear a future broke US government. But Canadian citizenship - the Liberals raised a great  'citizen of the world.' I'll give that in moment seeing what the country is like now.

268 @245 "That's one of the things I've always liked about Harper, is that he seems to be unapologetic about Canada. Wish I could say the same about Obama and the U.S." Me too when I see Harper. There is a cpc ad where he uses these lines about Canada: "Honorable in our dealings, faithful to our commitments, loyal to our friends, by turns, a courageous warrior, and a compassionate neighbor." I wish an Obama speech could be that good.

275 Another thing that's interesting to me is that, even though both the BBC and the CBC are leftists, they both provided better coverage for the UK and Canadian elections, respectively. Great graphics, pretty good at reporting actual results, and it was clear when they were injecting opinion.

Still don't quite understand the rule about election coverage, though. Is that basic idea that they're not allowed to report until all the polls are closed and receive punishment if they break the rule?

282 I think Colby Cosh had hit the 160-seat number on the head.

Harper's center-right, which is about as far right as Canada's been prepared to go since, say, WWII.   He's more consistent and principled than, say, Cameron over in the UK, who might have a decent streak of fiscal conservatism but is a hardcore warmist, not too inclined to dismantle the statist command-economy structures New Labour spent a decade erecting, and a little too fond of the Big Europe/global governance thing in general.

All politics may be local, but the boffins at the Australian Labor party can see their future in the Canadian results; the 'new' purer leftists strip the enviroloons and the academics and the other hardcore left-fascists from the 'old' labor-left party, while the center-right party picks up big chunks of the working class in reaction.

Eat your greens, but for God's sake don't vote for the buggers.

Speaking of the CBC, I'm loving how they're trying to paint Iggy as having run a pretty good campaign. From what I saw (which obviously wasn't as much as you all), his campaign managers allowed him to botch the entire thing.

As for punishment, I saw that Twitter was affected and some reports were blocked, but I wasn't sure whether anyone outside of the CBC actually got punished. Empty threats for the other outlets?

Posted by: Erik Larsen at May 02, 2011 10:23 PM (GHvcJ)

291 I really wish leftists would apply all those concerns for unchecked power they have for police and military and try applying it to the rest of government.  Decades of public school conditioning guarantees few ever will.  I see leftists relationship with statism like Siegfried and Roy relationship with those tigers.  "No look we feed them and are nice to them they would never hurt us, they are tamed and loyal and would only protect us they aren't wild animals..blah blah (wait a few years) blah blah blah... MUNCH!"

To me America and Canada are worth trying to save but at this point I think plans for how to rebuild are more relevant.
-----
Speaking of Senators, b4 the 17th amendment American Senators were chosen by the State governors.  Thus:

*States had the Senate to protect them
*House was locally elected people 1 rep for every 10k people (until 1911)
*White house with limited executive power was the collective filtered through the electoral college.
*no such thing as Damn Czars!

With 10k people congressmen really could know and serve their people and vice versa.  (hard to imagine today)   Just imagine, a division of powers among the the people and the government.   What a glorious constitution we were handed.  No one even remembers the "super important" crisis or why we sold it off peace by peace over the years just like Esau and his Damn pottage.  America was destined for crash when in the 60's those who respect the Constitution lost total control of education and the media/culture to those outright hostile to it.   The airplane is broken all that's left now is the rest of the fall and the landing.

Posted by: Adirondack Patriot at May 03, 2011 06:10 AM (iAUf+)

330 The NDP is essentially a Communist party. The reason they were able to snuff out the Liberals is that the LP had gotten so leftist itself that it had become mere Communist-Lite, and Communists never want Lite. As for the Conservatives, Harper is more like Joe Lieberman that GWB, let alone Reagan. It's a good thing he won, but the bad news is that sometime in the next 10 years, the NDP, with the Liberals out of the way, will win power and turn Canada forever Communist. Meanwhile, the current government in Mexico, the National Action Party, is much like the late Liberal Party, desperately trying to hold onto the far Left against the extreme Left. The extreme Left is represented there by the Democratic Party, another Communist group. The next election will most likely go Democrat there. With Mexico and Canada both Communist, they will be able to launch a pincer attack on an America weakened by both the budget deficit and by a Fifth Column ready to commit murder, sabotage, and rape in support of the Communist invaders. With our country seeded thoroughly with cowards and traitors, it is highly unlikely that America will win that war. The resulting Communist North American state will then last till the end of time, since it will be more powerful than any potential outsider, and Communist regimes cannot be overthrown from within without aid from outside.
