I met up with AoSHQ resident hottie Candace Kita aboard the luxury yacht "Ace of Spades" moored off the coast of Catalina Island near LA. Ms. Kita had only complimentary things to say about Charlie Sheen. As she puts it:
"There's been a lot of office gossip this week about Charlie Sheen. And because I've worked with him on 2 1/2 Men, it seems this is the only topic people can ask me about. Ironically, this week I'm guest starring on the series finale of another sitcom. And the director of this series was also my director on 2 1/2 Men. So every morning, we have our own version of office gossip on the set. People ask me:
"What was he really like?"
"Did he hit on you?"
"Was he on drugs?"
To answer your questions, Charlie was the most professional person. He was always on time. He always knew his lines. And no, he never hit on me. And I especially appreciated the fact he took time to find me at the end of each day to shake my hand and say good night. I had a wonderful experience on the show because of him. And because of this, I have nothing bad to say." Here is the Youtube link to the video scene of Candace Kita and Charlie Sheen from the hit series "Two and a Half Men"

Even if Candace Kita is sugar-coating things a bit (I don't know if she is or not), I respect that she's not publicly backstabbing a former collegue. Sheen could learn a thing or two about class from her example.
While Sheen does appear to have some kind of problem, I have to wonder what effects long term fame and fortune really has on people.
How many people can, with 100% confidence, say that years of getting whatever you want, being surrounded by fans, sycophants, money, parties, and celebrity reporters making "news" out of your every move wouldn't shake a few screws loose?
Imagine that you're fabulously wealthy, rarely suffer major consequence for bad behavior or mistakes, and in general get almost anything (or anyone) you want. How many single men wouldn't at least once go on a boning spree? How many people wouldn't end up "over indulging" on at least on occasion?
We all like to think we'd stay true to ourselves and personality without becoming self-absorbed, narcissistic hedonists, but for how long before you start to change? A couple years? Ten years? Twenty?

The fame and fortune leads to the cocaine which then leads to the crash and burn. Fame/fortune in and of itself is probably a good bit of fun save for the paparazzi. But the drug thing is death.
Sheen seems to have aged rapidly; dunno about his mind. His brain chemistry has to have been modified. He seems manic and, I'm guessing, schizophrenic. Hard to tell when you don't see him off camera; but if he's the way Kita describes off and then we note his on-air rants/behavior, there's something amiss. The guy ain't right, and it wasn't fame/fortune, really, that did it.

Even if one resisted the temptations of drugs and too much booze, for how long would the fame and fortune still be fun? For that matter, how long does it take before it starts to affect one's personality in a negative way?
A parent that overindulges and spoils a kid without discipline is probably going to end up with a spoiled, self-centered, irresponsible adult. I have to imagine that overindulged rich celebrities also undergo personality changes after years of such treatment.

My friend's daughter, a girl scout, said out of the blue yesterday "I wish I could sell cookies outside the liquor store" After we both picked our mouths up off the ground it turns out that another mom had said when she was young they were allowed to sell the cookies anywhere and she'd sold hundreds of boxes outside the liquor store. Apparently now the Girl Scouts have rules about where they can sell. And, it is a cookie mom free for all when it comes to signing up for the allowed locations.
Trust me the cookie moms could plan and execute a military offensive that could take down a small regime if necessary.

Oh, I agree. Too much of pretty much anything is bad. I'm just emphasizing the relative effects. Surely a drug like cocaine imparts such an acute and powerful assault on the brain - physiologically as well as psychologically - that it dwarfs a developmental "abnormality."
Most people can probably modify their behavior when social pressure reverses, which is to say that they can unlearn much (probably not all, but most) of what they learned. (Elvis, of course, is one of those exceptions to the rule: he couldn't possibly escape the attention - ever - so fame was going to doom him no matter what he did to protect himself.) Back to drugs...you can't really unlearn physiological damage; maybe you could train new sections of neurons to compensate, but I don't think the damage is localized as much as it's systemic.

Their expertise in one field leads them to believe that they are free to express all sorts of unsupported opinions things far afield. And, as Ace has pointed out, there is a soft, squishy leftism that becomes the default mode for many people, educated or merely credentialed.

I think I get it (this moron is somewhat dense/obtuse and needs things spelled out). The Girl Scout council or whatever it's called has a list of preapproved sites and times that it has negotiated for the council area/district. Troop leaders sign up first come, first bloodied knuckle.
A good troop leader is one who is quick on the signup list, not as critical to have connections in the local Chamber of Commerce.

It's true. They are overboard PC now, their commercials feature a Muslim girl and Michelle Obama is one of their spokespeople. The badges are ridiculously simple minded and easy to get and, at least around here, they don't manage to hold the girls interest much past 5th grade if that long.
But, they do still send cookies to the troops every year, so there is that. Of course the troops supposedly don't get any thin mints because of the heat and the chocolate etc, which I told my friend must be a huge disappointment, to see a crate of girl scout cookies delivered with nary a box of thin mints.

That's for Marines on leave, as far as I know. Plus, unlike Army, etc., they are never allowed to travel in camo. Last spring we put our boy on a plane to MO to meet up with his unit to fly to Okinawa. He had the Jarhead hair, carrying his official Marine backpack, and still had his little nail clippers taken by the douchetools with TSA Atlanta. We suggested to him he wear a class B uniform to travel, and that's when he told us why he couldn't.

We had a big fight in Seattle several years ago about UW admitting students using affirmative action. UW actually classified Asians as white because if they classified them as a minority it blew their whole reason for affirmative action. When you counted asians over 1/3 of the populaiton at UW were minorities and they weren't giving Asians affirmative action help in their admissions.

HAH! I can believe it! It seriously pisses me off how Asians -- particularly Asians of the eastern persuasion -- are treated like persona non grata when it comes to "race" discussions. "Gosh, they're smart and hardworking and do well? They can't possibly be a minority then, because minorities ALWAYS do badly because of the oppression of the white patriarchal hegemony! They're just slant-eyed white people!"
Or so the lefties think.
What REALLY annoys me is how there are virtually NO Asian characters in American pop culture. It's getting better now, thanks to shows like Lost that had/have prominent Asian characters. But they're never the lead character, rarely have a love interest, and usually just get whitewashed (no pun intended) into the background as a space filler. We've got "black" shows and movies, "hispanic" shows and movies, and "white" shows and movies up the ying yang. But the only Asian shows and movies you get revolve around one of four themes: martial arts, samurais, geisha, and sex workers. ARRRGH. It's enough to drive a person MAD.

There's another trend that's starting to creep in. Hugh Hefner's girlfriends show, now Charlie Sheen and his threesome, Big Love...it's as if Hollywood is starting to make polygamy acceptable. Maybe I'm getting cynical, but combine this with the DOMA controversy on top of the acceptance of unwed motherhood and it looks like another effort to weaken traditional marriage.

They have to, because the polygamists are gearing up to sue for being allowed to have legal marriages, based solely on the gay marriage precedent; if they don't allow everyone to get married, they lose the argument. The don't want any lines drawn.

Speaking of Asian characters on TV, what's up with the little baby Lily on Modern Family? Cute child, but never says a word, utters a sound and barely changes expression. I'm always wondering if they've drugged that baby or something. Every episode I hope she'll say or do something. She's like a little cute Asian zombie baby.

Yes that is absolutely true. And the last episode when Danny let his criminal brother get away really pissed me off. It seems to me that they keep making the cops on the show above the law.

Singlehandedly, you killed the Asian star.
Blacks had comedians Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy. Jews had Henny Youngman, Don Rickles, Billy Crystal. Hispanics had Freddie Prinze, Cheech Marin, George Lopez. Whites had every subgroup covered, from Steve Martin, Rodney Dangerfield, George Carlin, Andrew Dice Clay, Jeff Foxworthy, Ron White. And I've left off many many many deserving names because I'm tired and my brain won't fire synapses anymore. Lucille Ball, Rita, Joan Rivers, Phyllis Diller, Gilda Radner.
All of these trail blazing people had one citical attribute in common that you sorely lacked.
They were gut bustingly funny.

BO is making political moves to make sure he can dump the obamacare bill onto the states, knowing it is unconstitutional on the federal level but not on the state level and essentially force the states to adopt similar legislation which can't be challenged in the courts.
Interesting take on this. I noticed the new strategy this week regarding the states too. Maybe he's just trying to find a way to save face on this fiasco. The states can't afford it. The R states are actively trying to shut it down and in the current fiscal and political environment I don't think the D states will get far. But I have no doubt they'll try anything to get to single payer one way or another.
So glad the judge is forcing them to move through the courts. Every day that goes by I'm sure steps towards implementation occur, and we need to shut it down before the point of no return.

Yeah, I've wondered what would (will, optimistically) happen when Ocare is deemed unconstitutional. There will be years of turmoil, to unwind what's started and to get something else in place. MWR: "What REALLY annoys me is how there are virtually NO Asian characters in American pop culture..."
Well, if it makes you feel better, there are a TON of hot Asian porn stars. Which to be honest, is pretty freakin' awesome...
On a more serious note, I knew a chick who was Chinese, with a Ph.D in organic chemistry or something. She also wanted to be a rock star. So she was recording her own music and playing clubs, as a rock star. She used to bitch and whine about how horribly unfair it was that there were so few Asian rock stars, or Asian female rock stars. Or something like that. To be honest, most of the time, when she opened her mouth, after the first sentence or two, it just became "wah - wuh -wah - wuh -wah."
My attitude was always this: First, you are doing the rock and roll thing, so its not like there is any conspiracy to keep the "yellow menace" out of our sleazy rock clubs.
Second, if you want more Asian rock stars, more Asians will actually have to try to BE rock stars.
Third, I'm not sure of the exact figures, but isn't the Asian percentage of our national population in the single digits, percentage wise? Yeah, in a few California cities like San Francisco there are a lot of Asians. But on a national level, aren't they way less than ten percent?
She didn't really like my responses, but I pretty much tuned her out when she responded. She might have had something interesting to say, but I guess that's just my loss.
