Captain America Looking Pretty Good
— Ace

New trailer.

There was a question raised about the villains here, the old Captain America foe, "HYDRA." Someone asked, "Does that mean he's not fighting Nazis?"

The trailer explains that HYDRA is the Nazi "Deep Science Division." If I heard that right. What the hell is deep science? I don't know.

7 Shallow Science is Global Warming, most of the crap they put out about food, second hand smoke is hazardous to your health, etc. You know, all that stuff based on politics and what certain people want you to believe.

Maybe Deep Science is the stuff they used to just call science.

8 Too much of that chick in the trailer.Hope they don't ruin it with a romance plotline.

9 Man, this sure doesn't look like the squishy tone-it-down-on-the-AMERICA-stuff movie for foreign audiences that we kept hearing about. "Heroes are made in America" That's a pretty good tag line. I'm digging this.

12 My wild guess is that Deep Science is what JJ Abrams' TV show calls Fringe Science (basically, our current technology is so advanced that we can do today what has always been called scifi).  So like, the deep scientists are looking to do time travel, and walk through walls and stuff.

14 Yeah, this looks likely to kick Green Lantern's ass. The occult Nazi bad guys seems to have remarkable staying power (Hellboy being a semi-recent usage).

The good thing about occult, fringe science Nazis -- you can always have them appear in 2011 to take over the world due to a)time travel, b) hiding in an alternate dimension, c) frozen in carbonite, d) imprisoned in the phantom zone, etc, etc.

Nazis + Cthulhu = permanent bad guys.

15 The Bad News: it's Hydra...not an original 'foe' group (they were Nick Fury/S.H.I.E.L.D.'s original 'evil organization' to beat) for Cpt. America.

Red Skull or nuthin baby!

The Good News: Captain America (probably) won't be facing Hydra Skateboard Assault Group (yeah, that's right...skateboards).

Yeah, I was a Marvel fan from waaaaay back.

18 There's a short clip in there where he's using a shield that isn't his iconic round one, but more like the "classic" shield design that is like his first shield used like in The Ultimate Avengers animated film.

That actually goes back to the inception of the character.

25 If only there were some barbaric modern bad guy Hollywood could make movies about. Some large organization or civilization that was really horrible and did all sorts of nasty stuff -- like beheading their enemies, or randomly killing innocent women and children. Like, just go with me here, they could have some ancient text that demands everybody else in the world must submit to them. So, like, they're on some unholy mission from God to just slaughter everybody who disagrees and won't submit.

Well, that's obviously just a crazy idea. So let's just keep fighting Nazis for the next 65 years! I haven't seen a movie with robot Nazis yet. Or werewolf Nazis. How about hyper-intelligent Nazi monkey ninjas? Has that been done?

Not enough footage has been released in the previews so far to really tell about this one.  But that trailer could have been improved considerably with some decent temp track music lifted from John Williams' score for The Patriot, Jerry Goldsmith's from Air Force One or something else similarly appropriate to set the proper tone instead of whatever that distracting noise was in the background.

Listen to CPT. Charles, he knows of what he speaks.

Just because the film says that the Red Skull is a part of Hydra does not make it so.  I bet you also accept everything that Oliver Stone puts in his movies.

We all know that the original head of Hydra concealed his identity behind his job as a janitor.  He was killed by his own agents who wouldn't believe that their leader wasn't a rich powerful man in real life.

And yeah Hydra had a skateboard assault team...wicked!

45 Nothing wrong with having Cap fight Nazis; it's a period piece!  And the character's entire origin is tied up in WWII, after all.  A 1940s period-piece superhero flick?  Fuck yeah, I'll watch that.  I watched The Rocketeer and The Shadow hoping for the same kind of action.

I do think that the further into history this era slips, the further it recedes from living memory, the more any attempt to depict it on screen is going to look caricatured, insincere, generally fake.  The vibe I've gotten from the trailers is a bunch of 21st Century people in '40s costume, driving around in '40s ('30s, really) cars, etc.

The great WWII movies of the last century were made by and starred people who had lived through those times and in some cases actually served in the conflict.  The Cap trailer, and other period movies of recent years, feel like well-meaning but ignorant and garish translations of what that period might have been like, from the perspective of people who are as far removed from those times culturally as they are from the Romans.  It's unavoidable, I guess, because time marches on, but the contrast with the WWII films of the '50s-70s is dramatic.

>>The great WWII movies of the last century were made by and starred people who had lived through those times and in some cases actually served in the conflict.

You know who could have made a hell of a Captain America film back in the day?  John Ford.  It's a shame that a top producer with real clout back then didn't have the amazing, far-seeing prescience to realize just how popular some of those 1940s comic book characters (then relegated to strictly B-list serial status) were eventually going to become.  Sure, the special effects in a 1940s era A-list Cap feature film would have been more primitive, but they would have more than made up for that with a great script minus the PC anchor dragging it under.

...I am pleasantly surprised by that line.  I sincerely hope that's not just focus-grouped bait intended to draw you in for the sucker punch.

Based on what we've heard prior to this, I think I'll wait for the verdict before buying a ticket.  If they're serious about portraying him an actual American hero then yeah, I'll be happy to reward their efforts...but I've been stung in the past and I'm damned if I'll just take their word for it.
