Carney: This New Plan Will Bring Unemployment Under 9.0%
— Ace

Wow. Dramatic. He's promising that the plan will lower unemployment from 9.1% to 8.9%. Who knows -- maybe even down to 8.7%.

He caveats the hell out of this. Because of course the last plan was supposed to keep it under 8%.

QUESTION: If Congress were to pass the package that the President's going to announce, unemployment would be under 9%?

JAY CARNEY: Based on, when you're talking about economic predictions, yes. Economic analysts, economists will be able to look at this series of proposals and say that 'based on history, based on what we know, based on their collective expertise, that it would add to economic growth and cause an increase to job creation.

And based upon prior assumptions and models that caused them to project 1.4 Keynesian multipliers and sub-8% unemployment.

He forgot to mention that one -- based on the same assumptions of liberal economists' that already proved to be false.

That's easy.  Obama is going to tell threaten the BLS to remove another 20 million people from the unemployment statistics.

9 He caveats the hell out of this. Because of course the last plan was supposed to keep it under 8%. If you go back to that notorious graph of UE with and without stimulus, what did The Smartest Administration Ever predict if we passed the stimulus, as we did? They predicted that UE would be well under 7% now. So, this administration is a stuttering clusterfuck of miserable failure by its own standards and predictions. http://ace.mu.nu/archives/288619.php

10 My assumption is that "based upon prior assumptions and models"--rather, the historical record of recoveries from earlier recessions, that without the deadweight of a SCOAMF administration, we'd already see a quite lower unemployment rate.

Cordially...

Imagine if bohner had sent a letter saying "Sure, we look forward to your momentus speech, because as you know, expectations are sky high. 23 Actually, Carney did not answer the question. He did not commit to under 9%. The newsie asked the questions and accepted the answer that "well, we talked to some economists who thought it might possibly help" was the same thing as declaring it under 9%. Not what he said. I am reminded of this: Ripley: How many drops for you is this, lieutenant? Gorman: Thirty-eight. Simulated. Vasquez: How many combat drops? Gorman: Uh, two. Including this one. Hudson: Oh-ho, man...

27 Let me put it another way. Last time, when every right-thinking elite educated mind told us in no uncertain terms that Obama is smarter than a century of Nobel medalists, his Plan to End All Plans predicted our unemployment would peak at 7.75% in October 2009. Obama got his way, and instead UE peaked in October 2009 at... 10.1%. 2.35% higher than he promised. So, given his actual track record, Dick's new "plan" to keep the rate at 9% ought to send unemployment to about 11.35%. Hope and change.

112 A physicist, a chemical engineer, and an economist are stuck on a desert island with a boat full of canned food but no way to open the cans.  Each of the three takes a turn proposing ways to open the cans.

The physicist speaks first and proposes that one of them climb the palm tree and drop a can onto a flat rock and hopefully the force of the impact will be enough to break the seal on one end of the can and let them get at the food.

The chemist points out that the seawater is highly corrosive and that they can expose the cans to seawater to weaken the metal and allow them to open the cans.

The economist sighs at the other two and says, "First, assume a can opener."

They have slumber parties and practice the secret handshake.

"...Yet the behavior of the accused was odd. The charges were that during their initiation rites the SCOAMFs denied the Constitution three times, spat on the commemorative Obama Plate, and were stripped and kissed in posteriori parte spine dorsi, in other words, on the behind, then on the navel and the mouth, in humane dignitatis opprobrium. That they then engaged in mutual fornication. That they were then shown the head of a bearded Janet Napolitano, which they had to worship. Now, how did the accused respond to these charges? Austen de Goolsbee, who was later burned at the stake with Kreuger, said that, yes, it had happened to him; he had denied COTUS, but with his mouth, not his heart; he didn't recall whether he spat on the Obama, because they had been in such a hurry that night."

Barack Obama: 77%

155 JackStraw: "That's what this poll was all about."

There's more to it than that though measuring it tangibly would be tough. These insiders have their own wishcasting going on as does everyone. I do not believe they, as a group, made their choices purely objectively. Some have a vested interest in perpetuating the "moderate," bigger government status quo and vote accordingly. If you look at the names of those polled, they've been in the D.C. cesspool for eons. It's their livelihood and domain. Government (and its manipulation) is their life.

So, with that as a given, they'd be more inclined as a population to select the least "outside" entity that might hint at changing their environment. I'm not saying Perry is the outsider, but compared to Romney, he is (or is perceived to be).

Now, I'm biased against moderates and for conservatives. It's obvious and clear; but I don't have a dog in the hunt other than a voting preference. I gain no direct bounty for my position and endorsement. These insiders, however, do. They are the machine. Clearly it would impact their selection bias and it could be most readily perpetuated by releasing these endless polls determining who is the "best" candidate. They're vested in D.C. and in its trains of thought. The threat of losing status and connections surely impacts their votes.

159 Entropy: "The GOP insiders are a bunch of democrats."

By and large, and tragically, I believe that's true. This nation has been shifting Left for a long time. There are very few "conservatives," and they are a reflection of the voters. Americans say they're center-Right, but they really don't practice it. We fundamentally believe in the theory of center-Rightism because it makes sense, but actual practice of it is lacking. Now, which came first: the Progressive politicians or the progressive voters? I dunno, but conservatives are going to have to gain more traction and argue the fallacy that we're "too radical." I'd point to Milton Friedman and Thomas Sowell as a modern starter set for understanding common sense. I just don't believe enough Americans have attention spans longer than a flea's.

Which explains our Stuttering Clusterfuck of a Miserable Failure.

160 Getting the unemployment rate below 9% would be simple if he would just STOP D!CKING AROUND WITH EVERYTHING!  Without all the FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) caused by hyper-regulation, new entitlements, and constant talk of new taxes, the economy would be in a full-blown recovery by now.  But he doesn't believe in the invisible hand and therefore thinks the government MUST do something.  Of course, his failure to date means that politically he actually does need to be seen doing something and reversing course is unthinkable.
