Carson City Update: Were National Guardsmen Deliberately Targeted?
— Ace

Now a third National Guardsman, in uniform, has died from gunshot wounds.

Could that be random chance, or was the gunman targeting uniformed Americans?

The gunman was a Mexican national with, they're saying, a valid US passport.

13 From what I heard on the news, a. the shooter was shooting from the parking lot b. He shot at least 3 storefronts (including ihop) and a random guy on a motorcycle. c. The ANG guys were way in the back of the IHOP. Could the shooter even have SEEN them? Daylight outside, ANG in the back of a dark IHOP. I think he was just shooting all over the place and there was a unfortunate cluster of hits where the ANG were eating. If he were targetting the ANG guys then why shoot the other locations? Why not enter the IHOP and up the kill count.

62 Last week USA Today had a front page story about the rising number of ambush shootings of law enforcment officers. The two examples they mentioned in the first pargraphs were shootings of officers with "AK-47"s in San Diego and Houston. Had to wonder about the likely hood of these being tied to Fast and Furious.

Posted by: Have Blue at September 06, 2011 10:18 PM (IKTC8)

63 The two examples they mentioned in the first paragraphs were shootings of officers with "AK-47"s in San Diego and Houston.

Have Blue, this is very misleading reporting. An actual AK-47 is a fully automatic military weapon which many people have seen fired in action movies. They are not sold in the US without special purchaser licenses; i.e, regular gun customers cannot buy full auto weapons. These are AK-47 'style' weapons in semi-auto mode only that they are describing.

Second, the deaths of police officers have been fairly static over the past several years. Yes it is a risky job, but driving a cab is much more dangerous -- 4 to 6 times more deadly from a homicide standpoint.

Posted by: GnuBreed at September 06, 2011 10:40 PM (ENKCw)

64 Inside scuttlebutt indicates a very strong belief that the victims were deliberately targeted. Shooter was a regular at that particular IHOP, as were most of the victims.

In answer to Comrade Arthur's "news" facts, the gunman came back outside, got into his vehicle, and then drove in circles shooting seemingly at random before he shot himself.

Posted by: Sgt. York at September 06, 2011 11:27 PM (fhLYa)

65 Several reports indicate he had no criminal record, and none of the many reports says otherwise. The most that is said on the 'mental illness' front is that the the police said they'd had contact with someone or some people who claim to know him who suggested it as a possibility. So it could easily turn out to mean something like 'recent erratic behavior' - not enough to justify speculating about him 'going off his meds' or blaming some institution for releasing him, or even justifying taking away his sporting firearm (Hell, 'recent erratic behavior' probably fits a number of folks on this blog.). The picture is a guy with an AK-47 - a serious gun, so a serious gun owner - seeing some people going into an IHOP who were members of the larger group about whom he'd been doing a lot of irrational thinking, getting his AK-47 out of his minivan (minivan - hmmm: there was a recent thread here with multifarious reader comments on how that's a weenie loser vehicle only driven by weenie losers), heading toward the IHOP, on the way shooting someone on a motorcycle, then going into the IHOP a shooting almost a dozen inside, with an unlikely coincidentally large percent of them being National Guards, suggesting an intention to act on thoughts he'd been having. This report: http://tinyurl.com/4yj4sor says he drove to the IHOP in a van with a Support Our Troops ribbon decal on it. As long as we're going with conjecture, that's entirely consistent with that recent erratic behavior the police are going to be looking into having settled around some resentment, justified or not, rational or not - say, for inability to either get into or continue towards a National Guard position due to injury or odd thought patterns or both. Several reports indicate that for several years he'd had an injury that resulted in physical disability, which alone would be more than enough to get him disqualified from National Guard service. The most common type of injury to be under-diagnosed in car and motor cycle accidents is head trauma, in which the signs of a traumatic brain injury very often don't show up for months, sometimes years. Finally, "Mexican born" is not the same as "Mexican national"; the reports all say he had a U.S. passport, which suggests U.S. citizen.

66 Reflexively reaching for "Fast and Furious" and "targeting those in uniform" is commentary on the impoverishment of understanding in some as to what it means to live in a country with over 300 million people and almost as many guns (223 million in 1995 is the most recent stat I found). 300 million people means 300 million individual life stories, each of them unique and for the most part totally unknown to the rest of us.

The only record police have of him is of three pawn transactions over the past year." On the other hand, the theory that this was a manifestation of the Great Battery Cage War is also taking a beating: "Investigators don't believe he engaged with anyone else prior to the shooting, and have found no apparent ties between Sencion and the IHOP or neighboring businesses." New theory: the guy had a hate-on for all batter products and those who consume them.
