— Genghis Journalistic Hackery 101
Instructor: Prof. Katie Couric
Class meets M-F 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm (Time may vary depending on locality)
Course Syllabus: This course will explore the various ways in which a large media organization can and will shamelessly distort a news event using facts which may or may not be actual facts. By the end of the course the student will be expected to have mastered the art of and demonstrate complete proficiency in being completely full of shit.
Course excerpt:
During her January 10th, 2011 lecture, Prof. Couric discusses the recent massacre in Tucson and informs the class that the alleged shooter has been provided with a court-appointed public defender, Judy Clarke:
Ah, Timothy McVeigh. In this way the not-so-subtle connection is made. But has Ms. Clarke been part of the defense team for any other high-profile cases? Where the defendant perhaps may be of a different political stripe? Or none at all? LetÂ’s seeÂ…
"A federal public defender known for handling high-profile cases, Judy Clarke, has been appointed to represent Loughner, a federal judicial source told CNN. Clarke previously defended the "Unabomber," Ted Kaczynski, and assisted in the case of confessed al Qaeda operative Zacarias Moussaoui."
Nope. No McVeigh there.
"Ms. Clarke has helped a number of infamous defendants avoid death sentences, including Theodore J. Kaczynski, the Unabomber; Eric Robert Rudolph, the Atlanta Olympics bomber; and Susan Smith, the South Carolina woman who drowned her toddlers."
Still no McVeigh.
Did Ms. Clarke actually work on the McVeigh defense team? It's possible she did in some respect though the primary defense attorney was Steven Jones. Neither the CNN nor NY Times articles mention that trial. Nor is there any reference to it on Ms. ClarkeÂ’s Wikipedia page.
Irrelevant, because Prof. Couric has skillfully made a connection where there doesn’t appear to be one yet has planted the seed in the fertile minds of her students: McVeigh = Clarke = Loughner. A simple equation known as the ‘Bullshit Constant”. One that all students are expected to master before advancing to the next course in the curriculum, Journalistic Hackery 201
End of course excerpt.
Prof. CouricÂ’s office hours vary but sheÂ’s always happy to meet with enthusiastic students, time permitting.

The sheriff, a Democrat who has served as the county's top cop for 31 years, angered many with the remarks -- including some of his friends, who felt his editorializing had no part in a news conference, typically reserved for impersonal facts and details.
That is the first time I have seen anyone reference the fact that he is a Dem.

The reason for doing this now, via a "mistake", is that they only had a couple of days to set up the narrative. Already the press is saying the Tucson speech will "define his presidency." It is going to be framed like Clinton's Oklahoma City speech.
I will bet cash money people like Tapper and Anderson Cooper and others are already busy writing the reviews. "Historic, healing, unifying, changing the tone of Washington (unlike Bush), shaming those who use speech for gaining power, etc. etc."
The WH has already TOLD reporters this in their usual bragging about how smart the Obama team is. Knoller tweeted it yesterday, not realizing he was giving out information which probably should have been kept in background.
They are going to USE the grief of the people of Tucson to pivot and present him as a calm, moderate, unifier. The reviews are in, the die is cast. You all had better be thinking about how to respond to this.
I see the squish Pawlenty is going after Palin for the map. At least Bill O'Reilly defended her. It's pretty bad when Pawlenty is MORE squishy than O'Reilly. Wake up everyone!

Dying for lying. The person who shot Giffords in the head and killed the six others in Tucson had set aside reality so he could play God. Many will say he did it because he was insane, and perhaps thatÂ’s true. But just as likely, he did it because he was too self-absorbed to do something useful.
ItÂ’s bad enough to waste your own life on a lie, much worse to waste the lives of others on a liar.
After the infamous Jonestown massacre, in which 909 cult followers of James Jones died of “revolutionary suicide” in 1978, one of the survivors said he knew that Jones’ repeated talk of suicide was crazy, but he raised no objections because everyone around him acted as if Jones was making sense. (This man escaped just before the suicides -– and murders -- began.)

I guess that that Katy chick was all perky and interesting and shit during the 80's and 90's or somethong.
Kind of like Madonna.
(Aren't they both just ropey old lookin' whores now? Weird. I would have guessed that Couric would have aged better. I dunno. She may be a lot older than Madonna, though, so that's not fair.
They both look amazing in their '70's!
But didn't Couric leave GMA to anchor the CBS Evening News way after Dan Rather and his assistant Mary Mapes pretty much shat all over the grave of Ed Murrow with their "Bush is a Draft Dodger!" scoop and permanently damaged the credibility of CBS News with the Murder She Wrote demo?
But really why should I care?
Here's what I want to say.
Sheriff Clarence Dupnik is a giant tool.
AZ is in no way shape or form some sort of "mecca for prejudice and bigotry".
The only people who got all crazy insane and apocalyptic were political vultures who insisted upon ratcheting up the rhetoric so as to paint an an entire state as a bunch of bigots and racists that deserve boycotting, censure, suites filed by the Federal government.
So here's my new tag.
And my response to Clarence.
I'm gonna go red with my sock and link to a site.
This links to a picture that I took at a 4th of July Tea Party event in 2009.
My focus was more on the obvious target of the Ranch Hand with the flag but I remain captivated by the little barefoot girl in the background, running so joyously to her Daddy's waiting hand.
"Vitriol" my ass.
This is what people in Tucson do, Clarence!
But how would YOU know?
I've never seen you at one of these events.
Hell, you are so much above the racist bigots in your AZ County that you never even bothered to show up for Gabby's Congress on the Corner event, now did you?
Posted by: Deety sez Clarence should go to Hell at January 11, 2011 05:00 AM (Jb3+B)
Miss Marple I don't know what ABC is quoting but the NYT is quoting this:
“It’s not a device I would have chosen to do. Everybody has got their own style or different approaches,” Mr. Pawlenty said. “But I don’t want to have anyone infer that there’s evidence in this case that it caused or was a contributing factor. We don’t know that.”
He is not attacking Palin and he is not defending her. In either case I don't believe we should believe either news agency. ABC news has been known to "cut and paste" interviews to get what they want and the NYT has been known to make shit up. They are both liars.
Still, I am no big fan of Pawlenty, but quotes from these "news" organizations don't influence that. He does appear to be conservative on most issues.

Actually not so much. In the first half of the '90s Katie, then known as "Katherine", to balance the "perkiness" with some gravitas, was your run-of-the-mill local news reporter. She donned the parka to scream into the mike during blizzards, stood outside the traffic jams, and tilted left in the driving rain. Just meh. She either came to the attention of her betters because she gave them her far left credentials or a blow job--I don't know which, perhaps both and suddenly was propelled into the national spotlight. All in all and singularly made-up meteoric rise of an otherwise bland, lispy, and not to bright twit. I remember her only because she signed off saying, "This is Katherine Couric for News 9" and it always sounded as if she were saying "this is Captain Kirk".

Well, this looks like the end of Palin's political career.
It's completely unfair, but so is life. This is the final nail in her coffin; she isn't just damaged goods -- she's stick-a-fork-in-her done.
This is also going to have a powerful affect on the 2012 presidential campaign. The GOP will not be able to run an aggressive candidate because such a candidate would appear too "threatening". The odds are stacking up for Huckabee as the Republican 2012 presidential candidate.
Not that it matters who the GOP runs. They don't to win -- they really do not want to turn the historic first black American president into a one-termer.

"Barack Obama attended a madrassa...Seriously! This is huge!"
In March, Fox News's Martha MacCallum presented a clip of Vice President Joe Biden saying "the fundamentals of the economy are strong" -- and presented it as from an interview that weekend. In fact, the clip came from a 2008 campaign event at which Biden was quoting Sen. John McCain.
In April, Fox News's Wendell Goler reported on an Obama question-and-answer session that was cut short to make it seem as if the president wanted a health care system "like the European countries." In fact, he was just restating a question -- he went on to say that he opposed such a system.
In April, Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly described a "problematic" remark by Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor as "reverse racism" and said it sounded like she thought "that Latina judges are obviously better than white male judges."
In May, Fox News's Jon Scott said the network had decided to look back on how the stimulus "grew, and grew, and grew." In fact, the entire report came from a Senate Republican Communications Center press release, complete with typo.
Wallace had a former Bush administration aide Jim Towey as a guest on "Fox News Sunday" in August and together they pushed numerous falsehoods about a Veterans Affairs administration pamphlet on end-of-life issues.
On the news show "America's Pulse," E.D. Hill described Barack and Michelle Obama's fist bump at a campaign event last summer as a "terrorist fist jab." She later apologized and claimed that was how it had been "characterized in the media."
In a segment on Obama's budget in April, the network claimed it was four times bigger than President Bush's costliest plan. That simply isn't true

During Vietnam they didn't exactly make stuff up, they omitted a lot; for example nobody told us that the famous Tet offensive was a disaster for the Viet Cong and that they never again after it were any kind of effective fighting force after it - a rather important fact to fail to mention... don't you think. The fact that the VC disappeared from the battle field after the Tet offensive didn't fit the narrative that the war was an internal Civil war against an oppressive national government or something - hard to sell that Complete Bull Shit if you reported that the only enemy in the field were North Vietnamese Army regulars.
Perhaps it was during the hated Reagan era. No I don't remember pure lies and making shit up back then; they even reported it when John Kerry won the "Hero of Communist Victory" medal from the Communist government of Vietnam in 1983. How many of you knew about that when Kerry was running for President; that we had a 'certified by the enemy' communist traitor running
for President of the United States? We see lies of omission from the press - and in the Kerry case they could point out 'hey we told you about that back in '83, its your fault for not remembering' - but nothing made up like this.
Did they just make up stuff during the Bush I or Bush II era? They painted everything with hateful liberal brush but I don't remember a main stream talking head just out and out lying. They didn't tell us about the WMD's being found in Iraq - but that is another lie of omission.
The only comparable journalistic lies I can think of were the NY Times articles on Stalin during the 1930's, but I believe the journalist there was being black mailed by Soviet intelligence. I don't think anyone is blackmailing 'Dancing Katie'. No I think we have just seen broken a line that was never to be crossed even by the most evil in the past- and unless CBS can be forced to retract this - the other rabid dog journalists will all play follow the leader; they will all start making up what ever crap they need to advance their agenda. After all; "its not a lie if you believe it".

Get a grip, and get real. In point of fact, she contracted, tentatively, for an 8-week trial series initially, not a 1-year series, and every episode was, at best, amateurish, poorly contrived, tedious, extremely childish and boring, far below TLC's standards for their programming, and so her contract wasn't extended. If Sarah Palin had any decency, her childish and pathetically lame series would be an embarassment to her.

I have no idea what that's about. But I have a feeling it has a lot to do with the fact that the right HATES gays. Literally holds enormous hatred in their hearts for millions of Americans. Total hatred. And the hatred always centers around the sex. I don't know about you but when meet a person's spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend. I never think about the sex they have. Never. But here on the right, that is ALL they think about. Sick, invasive, cold-hearted hatred.

Nothing in that list even vaguely approaches the lie Couric just told.
Barack Obama attended a school in an Islamic country as a child, and his religion was listed as Islam on the entry form. That simple fact is what was being reported.
Selective editing has been used by the mainstream media for years. Fox didn't originate the process.
The use of source material from somewhere else as your own is plagerism - except that government pictures reports etc. are not copyrighted and are in the public domain - where anyone can do anything they want with them including failing to attribute the source. Once again Fox didn't invent the procedure.
Like all Liberal talking points yours crumble into dust when examined closely.
In any case if that is all you have you don't have very much - certainly nothing to compare with Couric's whopper. Crawl back under your rock.

We do, They are called blogs - that is why they were invented; to fact check the MFM and call them on their BS. Those blogs are why Dan Rather is not on CBS news anymore. Interesting story on that, you might try reading up on the history.
Like I said crawl back under your rock.

Last night, Katie asked this gem about Rep. Giffords
"How soon before we will know if she suffered any brain damage ?"

NYC must eat your brain.

Hey Jess, ain't Google a wonderful thing? Even when you went and used it belatedly after realizing that you had gotten in over your head?
(And even then, to save face, you still didn't tell the truth or say what you read, you blowhard and bullshit artist.)

I don't know what that dried up fifty something Katy Couric is "serving" in that photo--but I know that I don't want any of it.
Which is somewhat of a problem because based on what Katy normally has to say, you might tell her to shut her mouth unless she had something in it--but if you don't want that well---

It looks like Sarah Palin's Alaska has had more than 2.5 million viewers all season long and making the Top 25 fairly often as well. (Even if that is a drop from its initial TLC-record-setting 5 million viewers.)

That's the right for you.
Isn't it strange that when you have a horrible incident like the current mass murder - that the killer usually turns out to be left wing? I wonder why that is?
The left has a corner on the market for hatred - but because they know they can't sell it to the public they keep it hidden. After all, as the party of the Ku Klux Klan, the Democrats can hardly be the poster boys for tolerance now can they? Or did you not know about the Klan wing of the Democratic party?
How about we address that Klan issue, I can never get any left wingers to talk about that subject. I think it needs to be aired out.

What a disingenuous fuckhole you are. Making a comment on Palin's TLC show in a post about Couric isn't trollery? Fuck you, you sanctimonious bullshit artist.

Context, Waterhouse, context, and relevancy. Read the posts before you shoot off your big mouth. You ain't the brightest bulb on the tree here, are you?

So after three days of the MFM and the Left saying, some literally and some only figuratively, that Palin is as guilty of pulling the trigger as the loon, you mock Palin's series as a failure in an unrelated thread but you're not a troll. Don't tell us, Brian, you're a concerned Christian Republican too, right?

To this day Rather doesn't understand why he got fired. The technical issues that proved the documents to be forgeries just go right over his head.
Was he ecstatic when he got those forgeries. You bet he was.
Did he sit down with the flaky ass clown who forged them and say "How about generating some fake documents so we can use them against Bush?" Oh please.

Andy, Andy, Andy, you're not even rational. You're deliberately taking my words out of context to try to save, just more of your sleaziness.
If I had the time, I would have played with you to satisfy my curiosity as to if you're amoral or immoral. You don't have a conscience, do you? And you trash Democrats???

BTW, getting uptight over such an innocuous comment says that you need to change your meds ...., and, oh yeah, that you really need to get a life.

By the end of the course the student will be expected to have mastered the art of and demonstrate complete proficiency in being completely full of shit.
Hell, it looks like she's already mastered the "being completely full of shit" and is about to take a huge dump on the floor!!!!!!
How engagingly ELITE!
