Charles Krauthammer: Why Did Obama Choose To Lose Iraq?
— Ace

Unlike Afghanistan, Iraq is largely pacified.

American troops there would have guaranteed freedom from domination by Iran.

But Obama has chosen to cede Iraq to Iran.

Why? He doesn't answer, but a good answer would be, "Because liberal Democratic theory holds that the Iraq War was unwinnable, therefore, even if won, it must be lost." Lest anyone think something positive came from it.

But it's okay because he will do some really nice photo ops with the troops.

The politically prudent thing to do is for the GOP to demand the immediate withdrawal in Afghanistan. It's a winning political issue; the American people are sick of that engagement.

But they won't because that would a) take balls, and b) be somehow 'unpatriotic' in their small minds.

23 Krauthammer: As of Dec. 31, the U.S. military presence in Iraq will be liquidated. And it’s not as if that deadline snuck up on Obama. He had three years to prepare for it. Everyone involved, Iraqi and American, knew that the 2008 SOFA calling for full U.S. withdrawal was meant to be renegotiated. And all major parties but one (the Sadr faction) had an interest in some residual stabilizing U.S. force, like the postwar deployments in Japan, Germany and Korea. Three years, two abject failures. The first was the administration’s inability, at the height of American post-surge power, to broker a centrist nationalist coalition governed by the major blocs — one predominantly Shiite (Maliki’s), one predominantly Sunni (Ayad Allawi’s), one Kurdish — that among them won a large majority (69 percent) of seats in the 2010 election. Vice President Biden was given the job. He failed utterly. ***** Jeebus-Obama really knew who to put on the- Operation Fail -case.

26 "American troops there would have guaranteed freedom from domination by Iran."

Interesting word, freedom.  What Iraq will never have in our lifetimes is a government or a culture that is not antithetical to everything we believe in.  There will be no real "freedom" in Iraq as we know it. The best case scenario is a somewhat stable Islamic regime who basically hates us operating under Sharia law.

Is that better than Iran?  I am not so sure.  I know it ain't worth any more of our best people dying for. We cannot change Islamic culture.  If it is going to change for the better (and that looks doubtful for the near future) it is going to have to come from within.  I wanted victory in Iraq but I don't see how us staying there another 10-20 years, propping up a bunch of oppressors constitutes victory.  The experiment failed.   We might as well face that in Afghanistan too.

Obama will say:

Four years ago...
- we were on the brink of a depression
- stuck in Iraq
- Osama bin Laden was still alive and planning attacks on us

Deny it all you wish, but Obama has ammunition in his arsenal. You can argue with Obama's claims, but nobody gives about truth, facts, and details. 2012 will be just like 2008: the best bullshitter/PR guy will win.

Not to mention that our armed services are simultaniously fighting against and for the terrorists.  Why Obama hasn't been plastered for this by the right is unbelievable to me.  Does anyone in their right mind believe that the so-called Arab spring will produce anything other than terrorist led countries, or terrorist supporting governments as best?   Caliphate we much?

Posted by: AmishDude at November 04, 2011 09:23 AM (T0NGe)

38 Three years and a won war had given Obama the opportunity to establish a lasting strategic alliance with the Arab worldÂ’s second most important power. He failed, though he hardly tried very hard. The excuse is Iraqi refusal to grant legal immunity to U.S. forces. But the Bush administration encountered the same problem and overcame it. Obama had little desire to. Indeed, he portrays the evacuation as a success, the fulfillment of a campaign promise. But surely the obligation to defend the security and the interests of the nation supersede personal vindication. Obama opposed the war, but when he became commander in chief the terrible price had already been paid in blood and treasure. His obligation was to make something of that sacrifice, to secure the strategic gains that sacrifice had already achieved. Wrongo, Krauthammer... I need my campaign to win-my Hollywood! campaign donations... keepin' my eye on the ball and all that!

This is why they so hated Richard Nixon.  Not because of Watergate or because of his re-election in 1972, but because he got us out of Vietnam without the ignominious embarrassment  that they just *knew* we deserved.  They knew we deserved it so much that it took the Democrat controlled congress to engineer the situation to provide it after we had left.

You have to really think like a Leftard to understand... both this, and Viet Nam.

History.  We were defending South Viet Nam, from an invasion by North Viet Nam.  We WON Militarily, by bombing the crap out of North Viet Nam (Operation Linebacker II), which brought them to the Peace Table, and a negotiated Peace.  WE HAD WON.

Dems however, could not allow the "Win" of that evil Dick Nixon to stand, and thus passed a law saying we would not longer support S. Viet Nam.  Once the North finally figured out we had abandoned the South? They reinvaded, breaking their own Peace Treaty.... it is now written about in History books, as a Military defeat... contrary to what actualy happened.

Iraq.  Dems declared it Lost... The surge worked... but they cannot let it go down as a Bush Victory.... so they will abandon Iraq, just as they did S. Viet Nam.  10 years from now it will be remembered as a Bush Defeat... 30 years from now as a Bush/ Darth Cheney Foreign Policy Debacle (because the Left is now writing the History books).

Its all about the Narrative... because they really don't believe they (personaly) are AFFECTED by foreign policy...

I've long wondered why "some" people keep talking about the "Iraq War" as if it were still going on.  The Iraq war was over by the end of 2007, and yes, boys and girls, WE WON.  Saddam and his Stalinist thugs, defeated.  Al-Quida, defeated and run off (and they ran back to Afghanistan, which is why things heated up there right after the fighting ended in Iraq).  If that's not victory, I don't know what is.

The combat troop withdrawal, which the SCOAMF had nothing to do with (that was negotiated by the e-vil Bush), is long since done as well.  Sure, you still hear about the occasional bombing going on in Iraq, but it's just Muslims being Muslims over there; killing each other over stupid blood feuds, religious nit-picking and the like.

I know the MFM and their Dim masters will never admit it, but we won the Irag war some time back.  It's a shame our guys and gals in uniform will not get that victory parade they so richly deserve...

Failing to fully engage in negotiations, portraying the arbitrary deadline as if it was somehow fixed, and encouraging general war fatigue allows them to rush for the exits. There is a chance that "ceding Iraq to Iran" will force a balance, likely a Cold War-style balance, between the Arab/Sunni muslims and the Iranian/Shia muslims. Implicitly, the money and energy they would have used to plague the rest of the world will now be used to antagonize each other.

There has been talk about this for a few years, and I expect to see Saudi Arabia spending some very heavy cash to greatly increase their defense capabilities.  Pakistan might also focus more on Baluchistan, taking heat off of us and India, and maybe de-fund or reduce funding for the problems they harbor in Qetta.

This might be a longer-term win for us; not a long term win, say 50+ years, like Germany and S. Korea, but we might have a somewhat more peaceful 10-20 years coming.

I doubt that JEF and advisors see this. I think they simply hate the US and Western Culture, and see ceding Iraq as an easy vindication of their theories.

Posted by: maddogg at November 04, 2011 09:57 AM (OlN4e)

81 Two reality checks: 1. Polls are saying upwards of 80% of American voters are actually looking forward to the U.S. being out of Iraq. We'd have to guess that a number that big would contain lots of different rationalizations, and some of those would no doubt conflict; but the number is still big, and it's something that the Dems & in particular Obama can use in head-to-heads with Romney or whoever. Romney in particular had a part of his foreign policy speech that dealt with this, so it's not as if he can run away from that number. Anyway, 20% will be thrilled with the Romney or whoever position (I'm assuming Ron Paul will NOT be the nominee, but I'm also thinking more and more that that's maybe a bit presumptuous.), but 80% are going to hit that little button so it goes down. 2. The leaving is more-or-less in line with the Status of Forces agreement struck by Bush. That, of course, is for the 'intellects' in any crowd where it gets raised, which is probably less than the 20% who want to stay. I mean, there's really no way around a situation where Iraq insists on that and says, Go away, and this is probably something that doesn't convince anyone because the only one who want to consider it are already among the 80% who want rid of the place, but I do think it poses a problem for those who argue Obama should stay when the fact is he, uh, can't. Not even the AUMF provides any alternative. It's not as if this answer is going to result ion that little button moving or anything, but it does pose a potential problem for Romney or whoever arguing the opposite, because it means obfuscating or whatever the term is these days for lying, and that could make an independent think, First Obomneycare, then the abortion rights flip-flop, then the Ohio union confusion, now this - who can trust this guy?

82 Reason 1: Obama is a Muslim.  And he wants to establish the caliphate over the whole middle east, and the world.

Reason 2: Liberals are never wrong in anything they say, and if the facts--a war won in Iraq--have to be changed to make it so, then the facts will be changed.

Reason 3:  The usual acronym.

Easy.  Walter Cronkite is dead, and the MSM is getting the shit kicked out of it by the alternate media anyway, so they aren't as good at their job #1 of fucking over America anymore, and Walter Cronkite is dead.

ps. I enjoy saying Walter Cronkite is dead, because the fact that Walter Cronkite is dead is one of the few good things about the media now that Walter Cronkite is dead.

86 Wars have to end. This one was a mistake from the beginning. The Iraqis want us out, as do 75% of Americans, according to a Gallup poll earlier this week. Also, in case you forgot, the country is broke and cannot afford the cost of a permanent occupation of a hostile country. Nearly 5,000 soldiers have died for a pack of lies, fighting a dishonorable war. The civilian dead total more than 100,000 according to the leaked State Department documents. Five million refugees are now teaching their children to hate us, as the Palestinians hate Israel. The question isn't why is Obama choosing to lose, but why didn't Obama end this despicable, un-neccessary war the day he took office?

In both Iraq and Afghanistan, the people view their respective governments as  puppet regimes. They have little credibility with the general population--especially the segment of the population that is willing to fight. We are not welcome there and should leave. They have nothing to offer us anyway.

Afghanistan is mostly Pashtun, and will governed as such, no matter what we do--short of genocide. Iraq is a Shia majority country so naturally they will have close ties to Tehran. Shias are a minority in Islam so it makes sense they would band together.

The next time we send our people into harms way, it should be to invade, crush all resistance, and take any resources available as payment for our expenses. Then we should just go.

People will stop f-cking with us.

88 Also, in case you forgot, the country is broke and cannot afford the cost of a permanent occupation of a hostile country.

Ah.  But we can afford a permanent occupation in non-hostile countries, like Germany, Italy, France, Haiti, South Korea,etc...

Makes perfect sense.

Nearly 5,000 soldiers have died for a pack of lies,

While I do not expect an answer to this question, because I never get one from a brain-dead liberal like Jordan,

Please tell me one lie you were told.

Five million refugees are now teaching their children to hate us, as the Palestinians hate Israel.

Uh huh.  Guess all those stories of grateful Iraqis are just a part of those "lies" we were told, huh?

The question isn't why is Obama choosing to lose, but why didn't Obama end this despicable, un-neccessary war the day he took office?

BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Wow.  For someone who is so attuned to the "lies" that were told to get us into Iraq, you sure can't see the blatant ones that are right under your nose very well, can you?

90 In what way did we "win" in Iraq? We allowed the creation of another Islamic state with a Sharia-based constitution? Enabled Iranian influence over the rest of the Middle East? Wasted the blood and treasure of a nation and our soldiiers for what exactly? Shit, we didnt even get cheap oil. Why exactly do we care what this kosher Con thinks about Iraq?

Pretty risky for the legacy.  If Iraq succeeds Obama's roll is a footnote.  If Iraq fails it will be difficult for him to avoid the blame.

And if it fails over the next 12 months his relection chances are kaput.

Or because we can't afford it.  Anyone think of that?  ... that perhaps the cost of "Iraqi Freedom" is a price America is no longer willing to bear?

That said, it's obvious why Obama chose to lose (and lose we most certainly will.) It's all upside for him.  Fulfill the campaign promise, placate the anti-war Left (although they've been strangely quiet since January of 2009) save the $, and declare victory.  On the other hand, the downside is all on Bush.  If Iraq falls under the sword of its own radicals (or those of Iran) then the whole thing was doomed from the beginning and it's Bush's fault that we lost 5000 American Soldiers and half-a-trillion dollars.

93 "Why Did Obama Choose To Lose Iraq?" Because Iraq "is another Vietnam" is the narrative and had to be 'lost'.  Just as the Democrats lost Vietnam by blocking follow up aid 2 years after we left so now they will block aid to Iraq and declare the war lost and...  drum roll please...  Bush's fault.

94 "While I do not expect an answer to this question, because I never get one from a brain-dead liberal like Jordan, Please tell me one lie you were told." It's your lucky day. The biggest lie was told by Bush in his state of the union address, a claim that Iraq was seeking to buy uranium from Niger. The lie was repeated a few days by Colin Powell in his address to the U.N. seeking support for the upcoming war. They lied about Iraq's nuclear program and lied about stockpiles of chemical weapons.

BZZZZT!!!!

http://tinyurl.com/yoghnd

Bad intel /= "lie."

They lied about Iraq's nuclear program and lied about stockpiles of chemical weapons.

"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." -- Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..."-- Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

Much, much more here.  Knock yourself out

Who lied again?

Again, bad intel /= "lie."

Try again.

Actually, if that's the best you got, I suggest you stop now. This has all been discussed here ad nauseum and you do not have a chance. Honestly, do you think I'm so stupid as to have asked that question without knowing you were going to come up empty-handed?

Obama needs all the troops out of Iraq before Israel takes out Iran's nuclear facilities.  That is why he is not leaving a residual force.  If U.S. troops in Iraq are killed by retaliatory Iranian missile strikes, Obama will have no choice but to declare war on Iran, which is the last thing he wants or needs before the election.  Traditional wag the dog will not work for him.

What will work is that, if the Israelis are perceived to be acting unilaterally, the ensuing economic shitbath can be blamed on them.  With the Dow at 3000, oil at $300/barrel, and chaos in the Middle East, Obama and his policies are not longer to blame for U.S. economic misery.  Moreover, our noble Nobel Peace Prize winner can protest, mediate, and negotiate, while using our heroic Navy to clear the Straits of Hormuz and get the oil flowing again.  It is the only thing he's got left.

Note that, while the drawdown is occuring, American warships are moving into the Gulf, and troops, rather than coming home, are being moved to Kuwait.  I suspect Panetta's recent trip to Israel was to get Netanyahu to agree to delay the attack until after the last troops leave in December.

98 I'll get on the pack of lies bandwagon. They think that Sarin is a conventional weapon. They lied. It's a WMD. They lied when they said that Sadam never had weapons of mass destruction. I know people who still psuedo-believe that, including Jordan. 99% of the world holds that view. They said that they were against inspections, but then they later said that the inspections were working. Down the memory hole. But I help people remember. Jordan, You realize that even now Iraq has declared stockpiles of chemical weapons, that are not yet destroyed. Who are you to use the word "lie". I'm awesome!

100 Add Al Gore and Byrd to the liars list. That doesn't make Bush's dishonesty any less disgusting. Presenting bad intelligence, as you choose to call these fabrications, as truth to the nation and the world is a lie. Byrd is especially guilty because he was on the armed services committee and should have been asking tough questions about our casus belli instead of rubberstamping the administration's march to war.

Posted by: Jordan at November 04, 2011 02:37 PM (XJYf4)

101 Presenting bad intelligence, as you choose to call these fabrications, as truth to the nation and the world is a lie.

Thank you for proving yourself to be the paranoid, pseudo-intellectual ignoramus that I initially assumed you to be from your previous comments.  If you honestly believe that every single person in the US Government, as well as governments around the world, were in on the conspiracy to "lie" to you re: Iraq, then there really is no point in continuing to respond to your inane, childish remarks.

Posted by: wiserbud at November 04, 2011 04:37 PM (3Okgs)

102 Then stop responding, or at least pull your head our of your ass. The entire world knows that Bush's administration slapped together a case for war made of lies, half truths, and spin. The case was methodically constructed and repeated by Bush, Powell, Cheny, Rice and others. We were told Hussein was building nuclear weapons. (He wasn't.) We were told his government had links to Al Qaeda. (It didn't.) We were told Iraq was stockpiling chemical munitions manufactured in mobile labs. (They weren't.) All of these lies, and more besides (over 900 false statements, 250 by Bush) made a steady drumbeat to war. We've been pouring bodies and money into it ever since. It's time to end the monetary expenditure, and make sure our servicemen and women come home as passengers and not as cargo. You can pretend we're fighting the good fight, but the truth is our soldiers are dying grubby little deaths in a third world shithole while fighting a fraudulent and dishonest war that has contributed to the bankruptcy of our country with no benefits to our nation. The reason our soldiers are dead is because of chickenhawks like Bush and his administration and because Obama lacked the intestinal fortitude to end this nightmare earlier.

Posted by: Jordan at November 04, 2011 04:58 PM (XJYf4)

103 Not going to waste more time on you responding to your nutbaggery, but this one just cracks me up:

We were told Hussein was building nuclear weapons. (He wasn't.)

What's really impressive to me is how Bush was able to convince people of this even before he was President.

He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983." --Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." ----Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies."-- Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

All liars, I guess.  All part of Bush's conspiracy.

Seriously, Jordan, stop making a fool of yourself with your silly, unsubstantiated "facts."

Posted by: wiserbud at November 04, 2011 05:12 PM (3Okgs)

104 Fine, then stop wasting your time, if you think it's so valuable. You aren't convincing anyone. Am I supposed to believe Hussein was developing WMD because Nancy Pelosi said so twelve years ago? Sorry, but she only has marginally more credibility than you and GWB. It's a dishonest, dishonorable war, conceived in lies, executed by incompetents. There were no WMD. There were no nuclear laboratories. There was no Al Qaeda in Iraq until we arrived. Our soldiers are being fed into the meat grinder for nothing. We are not safer. You (and all the other chickenhawks like Krauthammer) should be ashamed of yourselves for trying to prolong the slaughter.

Posted by: Jordan at November 04, 2011 05:29 PM (XJYf4)

105 Am I supposed to believe Hussein was developing WMD because Nancy Pelosi said so twelve years ago?

Whether he had them or not is not the point.  You are insisting that the only reason we went into Iraq is because Bush lied.

You are wrong.  Your argument has no basis in reality and look even more ridiculous when you consider the facts.  That is, the actual, real-world based facts, not those that you fabricate in your own fevered imagination.

Posted by: wiserbud at November 04, 2011 05:43 PM (3Okgs)

106 I don't think Bush's dishonesty is the only reason we went to war. I think Bush's campaign of lies is what made the possibility of war more acceptable to Americans because we were told it would make us safer. Instead, a great many of us are dead and the rest of us are less safe. Wars have to end. There is no case for prolonging this one.

Posted by: Jordan at November 04, 2011 06:23 PM (XJYf4)

107 I don't think Bush's dishonesty is the only reason we went to war.

Well, this is new.  Especially considering what you so emphatically stated earlier.

Gettin' a little difficult to continue to support your earlier silliness, huh?  Understandable.

I think Bush's campaign of lies is what made the possibility of war more acceptable to Americans because we were told it would make us safer.

And yet, you have yet to produce a single, verifiable lie.

But don't feel bad, Jordon, as not one single liberal I have ever asked to provide one has been able to.

But please, feel free to continue as though you have.  It's quite precious.

Umm, the war is over.  Perhaps you read about it.  It was in all the papers.

But the Korean War is over, yet we still have troops in S. Korea.  And WWII is over, yet we still have troops all over Europe and in Japan.

But I guess because those places are currently safe and stable, (mainly becuase we stayed there after the wars had ended and helped to insure a transition from a war-time environment to a safer peace-time situation) perhaps you can tell me why we are still there?

Take your time, think it through for a while.  I'm sure you will figure out some way to blame that on Bush and his "lies."
