Charlie Cook: Yep, the Democrats Look Screwed Right Now
— CAC

Well, at least that's what I got from this. Read on, but we are not responsible for any damages or staining that may result from your reaction to his blunt analysis.

WhatÂ’s changed is that DemocratsÂ’ chances of holding onto their majority in the Senate is looking increasingly tenuous. There are now at least 10, and potentially as many as 13, Democratic-held seats in jeopardy. By contrast, only two GOP seats are in any meaningful danger, and that number hasnÂ’t changed in six months.

Things are starting to look grisly for Senate Democrats. President ObamaÂ’s approval ratings average 41 percent, basically where President George W. BushÂ’s poll numbers were at this point before his own disastrous 2006 second-term, midterm election. And the Affordable Care Act, ObamaÂ’s signature legislative and policy achievement, is now even more unpopular than it was in October and November of 2010, when Democrats lost 63 seats, control of the House, and a half-dozen Senate seats. It doesnÂ’t help that midterm electorates tend to be older and whiter than in presidential elections. ObamaÂ’s current job-approval ratings are also worse than they were in October and November of 2010.

The two most likely legislative land mines for Republicans to step on between now and Election Day have been defused: The government is now funded, and Congress wonÂ’t need to lift the debt ceiling between now and November. As a result, it is not clear where the kind of break that Democrats need could emerge.

The SenateÂ’s playing field keeps getting larger and, at least so far, entirely at DemocratsÂ’ expense. Three of their seats are, to put it charitably, uphill challenges. The open seats in South Dakota and West Virginia are pretty much gone [emphasis mine]. In Montana, itÂ’s unclear whether newly appointed Sen. John Walsh is in any better position, apart from fundraising, than he was when he was just the lieutenant governor running for an open seat. Between national party committees and super PACs, the amount of money raised by the candidates and their campaigns means less than ever before. With a handful of people in each party apparently ready to spend $50 million to $100 million of their own money on behalf of their favored candidates, a lot of things that used to be important arenÂ’t so much anymore.

Although it is getting surprisingly little attention, Democrat Carl LevinÂ’s open seat in Michigan is a toss-up; neither of the candidates is particularly strong or well defined, but the natural advantage that a Democrat in the Motor State could be expected to have is likely offset by ugly headwinds caused by radioactive Obama and ACA numbers. The same can be said for Tom HarkinÂ’s open seat in Iowa. In both states, the presumptive Democratic nominees have Obamacare votes to defend, but the highly problematic GOP nomination process in Iowa might well yield an exotic and unelectable contender.

Five Democratic incumbents now face tough races, ArkansasÂ’s Mark Pryor is in the most challenging situation, followed by Kay Hagan (North Carolina), Mark Begich (Alaska), Mary Landrieu (Louisiana), and Mark Udall (Colorado). Udall became the latest addition to the list when GOP Rep. Cory Gardner announced his candidacy Saturday. Also worth keeping a close eye on are Al Franken (Minnesota); Jeanne Shaheen (New Hampshire), if former Sen. Scott Brown runs; and Mark Warner (Virginia), who is as strong as a Democrat can be in that state but would be in trouble in the event of a meltdown. When there is a president with numbers this bad, even incumbents who might normally be OK need to be watched carefully, particularly if there is deeply unpopular policy weighing down the partyÂ’s candidates.

Cook goes on to try his best at working up some hope for the Democrats in Georgia and Kentucky, but admits they'd likely need to win both to have a real shot at retaining control of the Senate. That's not a position you want to be in when you are on the defensive in nearly a dozen contests.

From reading write-ups like this, watching the polling data, and seeing numerous gloomy exchanges among more left-of-center analysts on twitter (far more gloomy, I might add, than at any point in the 2010 or 2012 cycle), it's safe to say that the Democrats are now the underdogs in the fight for a majority.

Yes, I know it's early.

Yes, I know we've been burned before.

There's still plenty of opportunities for the Republicans to turn the gun around and blow themselves away.

But right now you can't help but crack a little smile as the Democrats really are, if only but for a moment, in disarray.

The latest Senate projection will be up later this week.

64 Oh, and another downer thought.  It really doesn't matter if we take the Senate in '14 unless we take it with enough of a margin to survive what is almost certain to be losses in '16.  Go look at the seats in play and combine with Hillary's skirt.  We WILL lose seats in '16 and there isn't much we could do in '15 or 16' with a slight hold on Senate and House against O's veto than we can do with the House.... notice we ain't done squat with the House.

What is the point of winning when the Republicans telegraph ahead of time they won't under any circumstances oppose the Won and won't in fact do much of anything unless we give em veto proof, fillibuster proof majorities... at which time they will invent yet another excuse to ignore us and obey the NYT.  Unless we have a plan to get a majority of conservatives vs a mix of conservatives and republicans, not much point.

89 The two most likely legislative land mines for Republicans to step on between now and Election Day have been defused: The government is now funded, and Congress wonÂ’t need to lift the debt ceiling between now and November. But once they have the Senate, hoo-boy, look for these same surrendering milksops to grow a spine, right?

Tuesday, March 4. CRIMEA Â— UkraineÂ’s Navy Slavutych crew prevented the capture attempt by armed persons.

“Armed persons in a boat came to the ship but the crew repelled their attack. There was even the attempt to board the ship, capture her, arms, and sailors,” informed Capt. 2nd Rank Vitaliy Zvyahintsev, Commander of Surface Ships Brigade, UkraineÂ’s Navy.

Now, the ships of the Russian Federation Black Sea Fleet continue blocking the Ukrainian Navy ships in Crimea.

All the military units and ships of the Ukrainian Armed forces deployed in Crimea follow the orders of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Republicans may be heading toward complete control of Washington..taking the Senate, and likely capturing the White House—if Election Day 2012 unfolds as Charlie Cook, acclaimed vote counter, predicts.

He sees Democrats losing some of the seats that they gained in their own wave in 2006. "Best-case scenario" for the Democrats, says Cook, is that they lose only three of their 23 seats that are up for grabs. More likely however, they will lose at least six of the 10 most at risk, tipping the Republicans into a slight majority.

191 not to worry: the Party of Stupid will throw away every chance it can to win, will nominate as many squishes as it can and then, regardless of the outcome, suicidally leap at every chance it can event to "reach across the aisle" and sell out the conservative base, because "electable"...

That would be too much like actual work for our mandarin betters, even though I think that is exactly what the Founders had in mind when they granted the House the power of the purse.  Simple bills specifically tailored to serve a Constitutional purpose, but since there would necessarily be too much transparency in such bills, too many K street political consulting scum would be out of work, and even LiVs could see the duplicity and treachery in Congress, it will never happen.

198 Greta had some Dem Senator on(didn't recognize him, young guy) whom she kept asking him why Harry Reid keeps getting passes from his party, etc. over the outright lies he spouts, such as the recent one where he said ALL of the horror stories about Obamacare are untrue. The Dem kept avoiding answering about Harry, but would repeat verbatim the Dem talking points of how 11 million people have signed up for Obamacare and that the Koch Brothers(I kid you not) are spending millions of dollars on ads that are full of fake people talking down Obama care. That there are many more great stories about Obamacare than the few problems. This is a US Senator spouting this crap.

199 For six years the GOP had the White House and (except for a brief hiccup from Jeffords) both houses of Congress. They did jack shit except stumblefuck two wars, put John Roberts in the Supreme Court, propose amnesty, and pass Medicare Part D. I'd like to believe this crop may do better, but Murphy's Law suggests otherwise.
