— DrewM I meant to get to this earlier but you know...Weinergeddon.

Anyway, yesterday he took a Jersey State Police helicopter to watch his son's HS baseball game. Naturally, Democrats are outrageously outraged!
Turns out, it cost the taxpayers a grand sum of zero dollars.
Gov. Chris Christie has taken the state helicopter 35 times since taking office in January 2010, including to survey flood and storm damage, according to State Police.State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes released a statement arguing the flights don't cost the taxpayer anything.
Fuentes said the time police pilots fly the governor count as training time.
"It is important to understand that State Police helicopters fly daily homeland security missions, and use flight time for training purposes, more so lately as we acclimate our pilots to the new aircraft," Fuentes.
I don't begrudge governors and Presidents the odd perk that's beyond most people's reach. Nor do I care how much it costs any President to go anywhere, they need to be protected. But even with this not costing anything this was a mistake by Christie. The optics of a Governor who is basically making his bones on getting state spending under control using a helicopter to catch a few innings of his kid's game are simply horrible. In politics, facts are often irrelevant. This is especially true in a blue state like NJ where Republicans have to be purer than Caesar's wife. And honestly, there are a lot of busy parents with important jobs who have to miss their kids games or make other choices, why is a Governor so special?
So yeah, this is a mistake. A minor one to be sure but still a mistake.
That said, The Big Man is still my guy. Speaking of which....
And where did Christie have to rush off to? A dinner with big time Iowa Republicans who want to see him run for President. TChristie once again did say no but...he once again did something that make people say...hmmm. He's going to Iowa this summer.
“It was exactly what we intended it to be, short of him saying he’d run,” Iowa ethanol entrepreneur Bruce Rastetter said of the supper at the New Jersey governor’s mansion.“What we heard from him very clearly was the same response he has given publicly: that he made a commitment to New Jersey and continuing to work to solve their problems,” said Rastetter, a Hardin County Republican and one of the organizers of the effort to draft the reluctant Christie to run for president.
...
However, Christie told the Iowans he has accepted an invitation from Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad to give the keynote address at an education summit here this summer. “So we’re excited his voice will be in Iowa in July and addressing education issues that are important to our state and our country,” Rastetter said.
You know Governor, Presidents have helicopters and even a really cool plane too. Just saying.

In general, I think any top executive should use the most efficient transportation available to him/her because his/her time is too valuable to the public to be screwing around with public transportation or traffic jams or what have you.
Still, Christie's mistake (and others before him) is so avoidable. Why in heck don't these politicians' staffers get in front of these stories? Shit, all they'd have to do is a have a program wherein top elementary students are rewarded with a ride in the chopper or something. They could do it twice a year and have a big media push explaining how it's not costing anything. That's how you inure the public to the usage of the copter for things that don't necessarily project the "optics" you want.

That is probably right, even though Cain is running second to only Romney in Iowa (tied with Palin) as of a poll today.
I don't think she would endorse Pawlenty and Romney is a definite no. Paul and Gingrich are 'no's as well.
I'd be very surprised if she didn't endrose Bachmann. Cain is possible though, because he has outsider credibility, and Palin does what she wants.
Posted by: Paper at June 01, 2011 03:47 PM (VoSja)
Yeah, but....he's no squish on fiscal matters, and I submit we need that above all things.
1. He can recant on the border.
2. He's not Pawlenty.
3. He's not Romney.
4. He hasn't quit.
5. He can beat you know who over the head extremely effing effectively.
6. He'll drive the unions apeshit in a way not seen since Ronaldus Magnus.

Cain is going to need some major gaffes to not be a force in Iowa. The ones he has had so far aren't sticking, and he has walked them back with no real consequence. His polling is remarkably high for his name recognition.
Right now, I'd expect the top three in Iowa to be Bachmann, Cain, and Romney in some order.
Cain would be a weak general election candidate.

I can see the appeal for a House or Senate seat. The Presidency is just a step too far, particularly for someone who has clearly not thought very deeply about foreign issues.
I don't see this hurting him in the primaries though. Voters are very conflicted about Afghanistan and Iraq, and I just don't think it will stick as a negative.

I agree and so we are going to have to do what the left does when they nominate a candidate that they all can't agree on - they decide to back that candidate regardless, because they see the Republicans as a larger threat. And they don't just back the candidate, they go all-out and try to drag him over the finish line by any means necessary. See: Kerry 2004. God help me, if Cain or Palin or Bachmann win the nomination, I'll vote and campaign for them, even though I don't think they have a snowball's chance in hell. I just wish the diehard Cainiacs or Palinistas or Bachmann-ites would do the same when it came to the Romneys or T-Paws or (shudder) Gingriches.

Most people end up voting for the candidate, but the problem comes in fundraising and volunteering.
It is one thing to ask someone to vote against Obama. It is another to ask them to give a maximum donation to that person's campaign. This is where you have to feel like the candidate represents you.

I'll say it right now: I don't like Palin, I think she is grating and irritating, I don't want her as President because it would be non-stop bullshit drama every single day, but God help me, if she wins the R nomination, I will donate the maximum personal donation to her and campaign for her like a banshee, because I WANT OBAMA OUT, PERIOD. Will the Palin folks say the same about, say, T-Paw?

It's lovely to see more Rs confront Obama and not apologize for it.
Ryan vs. Obama: “Mr. President, the demagoguery only stops if the Leaders stop it."
“I could tell the president was nervous, because when he’s nervous, he talks on and on. Everybody else he gave about a three or four minute answers to. To Paul Ryan it was about 20 minutes,” freshman Rep. James Lankford (R-Okla.) said.
Obama's snide answer about demagoguery (generally): Peter King: “He said, ‘As someone who’s a socialist, who wants to have government-run healthcare … and who’s birth certificate is being questioned, I can empathize with that.'"

The Rs did confront him, the question is whether it matters. More of them also need to be better about this in public. But that also presumes a majority of members in the House R Conference are serious.
Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at June 01, 2011 04:27 PM (8B3iX)
If Romney wins, will you support his reelection? Against any primary challengers?
Posted by: Serious Cat at June 01, 2011 08:17 PM (bAySe)
It all depends on how big of a fuckup he was. If Romney wins and becomes Major RINO Squishy then yeah I will support primary challengers to bring him to the right.
But here's the thing: We will have a far greater impact in Congress than we will have on the Prez. So at the same time we should be working our butts off to get a conservative House & Senate. Imagine of Congress sends President Romney an ObamaCare repeal bill. He won't dare veto it. He will sign it. But that would only happen if the Senate gets 60 R Senators (which is actually possible this time around, but tough) and a conservative House.

Funny you should mention that - about 3 days ago I posed that question at HA and everyone swore up and down that they would support the nominee- as long as they didn't smear St. Sarah.
Which for a lot of them will mean " No".

This will be a Ruling Class vs. Plebs presidential campaign. It's going to be a political revolutionary struggle on the same level as the 1800 Adams-Burr-Jefferson bruiser and the 1828 Andrew Jackson- JQ Adams donneybrook.
I remember the 1980 race well. I was the election-night GOP observer in a predominantly left-wing precinct. As the ballots were being counted, the room was quiet except for the rustle of the tickets and the somber voices of the MSM anchors on the B&W television. Heh. And the Dems took that precinct 2.5 to 1, instead of the usual 4-1 ratio.

And what, pray tell, gives the government the right to search me and my belongings at the airport? What gives them the right to drug test federal employees?
As someone who spent her formidable years growing up in section 8 housing, I can assure you that there is very little by way of the humble and noble poor in those places. I know exactly 3 (THREE) people who carried on with their lives in such a way that their adulthoods are not scarred by drugs or crime or alcoholism (or all three).
My grandparents were poor despite my grandfather working his ass off so that he never had to take a handout. My mother and the other ladies in the 'hood, however, did and sold drugs all the while attending PTA meetings.
Do not be taken in by the stories of the noble poor. They absolutely exist, but my experience tells me they don't exist in the numbers you might have been led to believe.
Go ahead... lay it on me. I'm a cold-hearted bitch.

That chopper would have flown, for that period of time in approximately that area, and the Governor caught a right.
I spent two weeks in Acaupulco, doing nothing but chasing tale and drinking, PAID, after riding on a government transport (the USS Boxer) I dangled like a rider on whatever the amusement ride at the top of Rio is, but we called it "spy rigging" I have had a lot of experiences that most people would think of as entertainment but I can tell you this, the 2 times I worked "cover" (I was the com guy, for a nothing ambassador, in a non-hostile country) I took my job seriously, but the amabassader was emberassed by the attention.
Rightfully so, but he was a bigwig, we treated him like a bigwig for a frigging 4 mile trip, and he deserved it. That's what happens when you are a big wig.
Not to mention I also have been to many other countries flyging Military plains at a premium, because they were available, one of my friends hit 17 nations in 30 days. Are you gonna blame a Marine for doing something that is available? Christie needed protection so the state police thought "EH! Lets use it as a training exercise." That is what people who have shit to do do.
Stupid non story, and NOT bad optics, at least not with the military, or likely the cops. I say that the catchphrase for the election should be, "The President has the Academics behind him, WE have the Millitary, The Police, The fireman, we have Harsh men who do hard things behind us. I know who I would choose, and I hope the American people agree!"
