Chris Christie: Real Presidential Leadership Consists, I Submit, Of Actual Leadership
— Ace

Good Christie quote here at Verum Serum (video).

Asked about the debt limit, Christie first offers up the independent-flattering pox-on-all-houses "they should just fix it."

Fine.

But then he turns to Obama. And offers the opinion -- which the press corps cannot believe, so absurd it is -- that a president, the chief executive, is expected to lead with his own plan and his own ideas and his own specific proposal, and not just sit back "waiting for legislators to lead."

He notes that the did not just "wait for legislators to lead" himself.

Crazy!

Meanwhile, Christie lays out his reasons for not running in 2012, in a meeting with donors.

Basically, Christie spoke to donors via conference call, because one among them, a guy named Lagonne, begged him to run for President. Here's what he said:

ere’s a paraphrase of what Christie told his would-be backers: “I’m not running, but I came because Langone is so aggressive, he basically just physically shook me into doing it. I’ve weighed this carefully; I didn’t dismiss it out of hand. There were four considerations. 1) One question was: Where’s my wife? She’s not enthused. 2) The second is: I looked ahead at the potential for two years of running, and not seeing my kids. If I won, six years of not seeing them. If I won a second term, 10 years of not seeing them. Missing my kids growing up is a big deal to me, and it was a big reason. The wife was the biggest. The children were the second. 3) I’m staying in New Jersey. I am not just going to quit halfway through my term. The people trusted me, and I feel like I owe that trust and faith some fidelity. 4) And fourth: Could I win? Could I really do it? I think I would win — not saying I would win, but I could win. I brought my oldest son today because, first of all, I wanted him to wake up early. And, second of all, to have to put on his one suit and tie. But I wanted him to listen because if I did run, which I’m not going to — but if I did in the future — it’s going to affect him. There’s six people in the family — I’m just one. I recognize that not all of you would immediately commit, but it certainly makes me realize that if I were to run, and had this group were behind me, I certainly wouldn’t have any problem raising money.”

Anyway. He's not running.

Tammy Bruce reads this as some kind of a dig at Palin.

I will say what I said on Twitter. Palin is very, very important to some people. But those people have to understand their passion is not shared by all.

So when someone like Christie purports to be talking about his own wife and children, chances are, he's really talking about his own wife and children, and not, in fact, giving coded messages dissing Palin.

Most people do not think about Palin all that much. It is a simple error of projection to mistake one's own enthusiasm for her as universal.

15 I like Palin.

I don't understand why some of her fans throw her into things she's not a part of in a way that really is kinda ugly.

She actually deserves better.

Christie is a remarkable man, and I really appreciate how he's explaining this.  This is sincere, and had nothing at all to do with Palin.  It's true that Christie would probably back of her opponents if she even runs, but that is ideological.  They are OBVIOUSLY very similar people, and if you respect one, you probably respect both.

I used to think Palin's worst fans were fakes trying to drag her down, but I know now that some of them really think this is helpful to her.  It's not.  She doesn't want that.  She may not even be running if Perry is running.  We need to work together.  Maybe sometimes we split into factions, but for the most part, Palin and Christie are allied on what matters the most... which by the way is not their personal ambition.

What is he talking about?  I'm sure the media will leave his family alone just like they are doing with the Obama kids.

Yeah, sure, Palin's family deserved it because she "paraded" them around by having them on stage and holding her baby in her arms (she's practically a pimp there) but all the Obama's have done is include their kids in staged photo ops, so there's just no comparison, what is Christie worried about?

But then, I realized that if he wanted to get a dig in at Palin, he'd just go ahead and damn well do it, kick ass, take names.

What a lot of us like about Christie is that he doesn't dance around issues, so it wouldn't be in character for him to suddenly go coy.  If he wants to call Palin out, he'll call Palin out, I think.  And nobody will have to read any tea leaves (no pun intended) to figure out what he's really trying to say.

So, I see nothing here beyond Christie's "fer Cheetos' sake, people, I'm not running, give it a rest already."

102 Consider this: if Christie really did start bashing Palin, he would reap tremendous benefits politically as a sane moderate.  The press would love to boost a guy like that, who is not a direct threat to Obama, by lionizing any criticism he offers of Palin, whom they hate so much.

But he's not going that route.  Even though he's in a blue state and would probably skyrocket in the polls.

Why?  Probably a sense of personal honor.

Anyway, this isn't a passive aggressive catty guy.  He will simply directly say what he wants to say.  He is saying he cares about his family.  Frankly, I don't see how that contradicts Palin's values, which are consistently concerned for her family's welfare above just about anything else.

114 It is a simple error of projection to mistake one's own enthusiasm for her as universal.

But an invincible devotion to the same endlessly rehearsed handful of anti-Palin-run talking points is universal among squishes, and Christie's not-running spiel is a "derivative work," in legal terms, of that handful. And you know this.

Every time you pretend to be stupid to avoid any appearance of consortion with crackaz, your brain comes this much closer getting stuck like that.

151 I will say what I said on Twitter. Palin is very, very important to some people. But those people have to understand their passion is not shared by all.

Before 9/11 I was a Democrat. I'm a former death-metal bassist, so I was never exposed to conservative ideals. What made me wake up was Bush standing on the rubble of the World Trade Center saying, "I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon."

I don't regret changing my politics. But what I miss about being a lefty is the fact that we never ate our own at the nearly pathological level that conservatives eat theirs.

I don't like hunting. I'm pro-choice, even though I hate abortion. I'm not comfortable with the deeply religious. But I 'd vote for Palin in a second. I think she's fine. She's inspirational. I don't love her, but then again I don't love any politician.

I can tell you that as a former Democrat, leftists hate conservatives. They hate conservatives the way a sane person hates al Qaeda. They want to kill conservatives. They want to rape and humiliate them. But you know who else hates conservatives?

Conservatives. The vitriol that conservatives express at their own side matches the vitriol of Democrats. Easily. It's simply not politically functional. Just because one feels something doesn't mean one has to express it in public. I'm often horrified at the sentiments I read on conservative Web sites.

But I'm on board defeating liberalism, so I'm bringing my formerly leftist message discipline to the fight. I keep my mouth shut, and I don't trash anyone on my side. I wish more conservatives would do the same.

Several of LangoneÂ’s guests said during the session that they are Republicans, but voted for Barack Obama in 2008 because they disagreed with having Sarah Palin on the GOP ticket.

Maybe I should vote for the Dem in 2016 if Chris Christie is the R nominee and I disagree with him being on the ticket. Christie and his east-coast elitist RINO establishment fanbois can go fuck themselves sideways with a pineapple.

189 So, does this mean she supported the CCB bill that passed the House?  What has she had to say about the McConnell plan?  What's her take on the noises Moody is making about downgrading us?  Does she think it's worth looking for a compromise to prevent that, or should we draw a line in the sand?  Does she think anything can prevent that?

What does Sarah Palin™ think we should do?

192 Still, a little fire discipline now and then would be appreciated.

Exactly. There's a happy medium between marching in lockstep and doing everything in your power to delegitimize candidates and entire voting blocks on your own side.

I think Ace said that it was Palin's supporters that turned him off Palin. I'm sorry, but that doesn't make sense. Palin's ideas are what's important. It shouldn't matter how obnoxious you think her supporters are.

I support the ideas that can save us from the disaster that looms or might already be here. I read Palin's Facebook essays but not the comments. I don't care what her supporters or detractors have to say.

After I read her essays, I send them to people.

Message discipline.

214 Okay, just for the sake of argument, suppose Christie is a gun-grabber.  So what?  He can't repeal the Second Amendment.  He can propose bills to confiscate guns but as long as we retain a Republican majority in either house of Congress, those bills are going nowhere.  I suppose he can enforce federal gun control laws very strictly, maybe even make it difficult to get dealer permits, but most gun control statutes are state and/or local level ones anyway.  Look at who we have now as president, and guns haven't been confiscated.  As long as Christie didn't try to build a campaign around gun control (and he would be absolutely foolish to try), I really don't see the big huge problem other than just disagreement with him on that issue.

That gets tedious.

Well, I recall that Ace said he was turned off Palin because of her supporters. I can understand being turned off the supporters of a given politician, but that wouldn't make me turn against the politician herself.

I check out Free Republic on a regular basis. I know those people are a different crowd than the people here, but over the past year they've Balkanized themselves into the Palin group, the Bachmann group, the Cain group, and the Romney group. They all hate each other and trash talk with a level of genuine viciousness that warms the cockles of Debbie Wassermann-Schultz's shriveled little heart.

There was one poster, Pissant, who essentially went insane in real time, transforming from a devoted Palin booster to a rabid, foam-spewing Palin hater for no discernible reason. He started calling her "Precious" and habitually posted links from leftist sites denigrating her. He was finally banned after he said that Tammy Bruce always had the scent of Precious on her breath.

It was an amazing--if extreme--display of the fracturing I mentioned above. These are all rock-ribbed conservatives terrified at the damage being done to the country, but they seem to hate each other as much as liberals hate them. At any given time, at least a third of them are threatening to stay home the next election or vote for a third-party loser.

I don't get it. I don't hate anyone who boosts the candidate they like the most; in the end I'm voting for whomever is the nominee. It's an easy choice for me: Anyone But Obama.

246 #249 - '80sBaby- the tedious comment was directed at JackStraw and his ilk who trash Palin and her supporters and then play the Jon Stewart game whenever we push back. I don't have a problem with your original comment. It's possible that Christie was not making a dig at Palin. But, given his track record of making digs at Palin, I'm inclined to agree with Tammy Bruce and tire of the meme that Palin and her supporters are all narcisists who "imagine" attacks. While Christie can be blunt, he is also an attorney which means he has mastered the skills of snark, innuendo and back-handed insults. Christie and the GOP hacks are playing good cop - bad cop and they are actively undermining Palin and conservatives. While I enjoy Christie's youtube videos and blunt talk, his attacks on Palin are despicable and he needs to check himself. Also, it appears that some of Christie's kids are young. His "reasons" for not running will be just as true for the 2016 election as for 2012, and so it reeks of BS.

248 This is a basic problem with our political system. The most honorable, decent, and virtuous people are also the ones least likely to want to run for high office.

I'm not saying that Christie is necessarily all those things, but his concern about his family and desire to be there for them is a very valid, noble thing and its something that high-end politicians seem significantly less interested in than their own power. Being that level of politician basically makes you not a parent any longer and demolishes your family life.

Ace should recognize how limited the support for RINOs like Pawlenty, Romney and Perry is.    Palin's popularity has been demonstrated time after time.  Christy, well among dopers and the Guiliani crowd, I can understand why he refuses to run.

But we will continue to hear about the appeal of the spineless, just review Ace's 2008 analysis of the candidates.   This is but a boring replay of the mantra that legacy RINOs always use.

And it is pathetic.

254 "Most people do not think about Palin all that much. It is a simple error of projection to mistake one's own enthusiasm for her as universal." Yeah, I guess that's why she has been handily winning every poll that Hot Air puts up, for how long now? Or perhaps *you're* projecting your lack of enthusiasm onto "most" people. "Moron"

255 Obama fears Christie because he knows that Christie calls a spade a spade--in this case a limp handled shovel without much spine and no brains .
