I got a Kindle. I'm really enjoying it. I'm going to review it at some point, but at the moment, I'm really loving this object.

Normal Kindle or Kindle Fire?

I'm surprised you don't have one already, actually.

3 I hope "loving" is figurative, Ace.

4 I bought the wife a Kindle Touch for Christmas. Great device for travel or just relaxing with a good screen at home. All your books on a device thinner than a smartphone. <:-D

5 I got my wife the Kindle Fire. She seems to enjoy it. I already have the Kindle app on my phone so it's not worth $200 for a larger screen.

7 I got the wife a Kindle Touch (did all my Xmas shopping on Amazon thru Ace's link).  It's a nice unit.  I'm looking forward to utilizing it for all my reading.

Unless Kindle's got a clip for reading glasses that can accomodate the tape in the middle holding them together, the device is worthless to me.

I got a bottle of Jameson's 18!

Posted by: spongeworthy at December 26, 2011 10:36 AM (puy4B)

9 As s side note: I owned the predecessor to the Touch which used a joystick button for navigation.
Hated it. I sent it back after 3 weeks.

I think it's still for sale for $79. The Touch is well worth the extra 20 bucks, and it has twice the storage capacity.

14 Normal Kindle, the touch 3G. So not only is it kind of gorgeous just as an object, but it makes reading easier. I struggled with the book Simon Schama's Citizens (a history of the French Revolution). I mean I literally strugged with the book, physically. It was a thick book, and fairly tall (trade paperback), and the pages were wide. It is not a hard-to-read book at all. Except it is difficult to actually find a comfortable way to hold it on your chest in bed to read. And the pages are wide requiring multiple eye-flicks to get across each line. And I kept turning on my side to manage this book. Nothing worked. Took forever. Anyway, the Kindle is small and presents a little less than a paperback-page of text per page. It's pretty convenient, and my eyes don't move as much horizontally while reading (two moves most of the time), and I read faster. it's just pretty handy. I know it's a heresy to say it's better than a book, and in some tactile ways, of course, it doesn't have the romance of a book, but it is a convenient and efficient way to read.

15 Normal Kindle or Kindle Fire?

the Kindle Fire's screensize is disappointing. After having an Ipad for a while; my mom's Fire is so...dinky.

Dad gave me an interesting old book, Rescue Tug.  This book was about the effort by the ocean-going tug, Turmoil, to save the wrecked cargo ship, Flying Enterprise.  I had been flipping through the old man's copy a few months ago and he tracked-down a copy for me.

So, Christmas at the folks' house wasn't all bad despite the Spawn-of-Satantm testing my self-control.

17 I got a Kindle 3G as well ace. Currently reading 1636 by Eric Flint which Baen had for $6 and it has no blocks on it at all.

If you haven't got them I have the addresses for places for free stuff.  If you like SF Baen has a LOT of their stuff for free.

18 For the sake of comparison I downloaded a free copy of a Conan story I had not finished this past year of reading on planes - -Red Nails. I kept putting it down. The Conan collection books are nice and thick and handsome, but a pain in the ass to read. Anyway I'm blowing through it on the Kindle.

Posted by: ace at December 26, 2011 10:43 AM (nj1bB)

19 I got some good video games this season. (the best time of the year for downloadable vid games). I thought Divinity II - Dragon Knight Saga was cool but was blown away by Dragon Age Origins(Ultimate). I installed DAO just to make sure it worked and within 10 minutes I was sucked into the story and didn't want to put it aside. 4 Elements is a pleasant little puzzle game. I thought I wouldn't like it because I don't like timed matching puzzle games but, after had playing the demo for over 2 1/2 hours I realized that this one was different.

20 One day I may get an ereader, but today ain't the day.

We didn't do Christmas gift exchanges at the Refuge, we're going to Eldest Daughter's in Jacksonville FL the beginning of January and we'll do it then.

I did get the Mustang calendar that I ordered from American Muscle though. That was nice.

21 I absolutely love my Kindle (the old fashioned kind that are ideal for reading, not the new Kindle fire with lots of colors and fancy new features and such). They are just about as easy to read as a normal book, and you can also search them for key words and phrases.

Posted by: kesgardner at December 26, 2011 10:44 AM (GKlPf)

22 I sure as hell read a lot more with my kindle app than dead-tree editions. So much so, that I have purchased books that I already have in paper form. Instead of collecting dust, they get read.

You shouldn't read in bed with a book on your chest. You'll get a crook in your neck, destroy your posture and ruin your game with wimmins. Read on the toilet instead.

Also, Citizens, I could have told you how it ends. Gets all choppy in the middle, right?

29 In another couple of years you will be able to get an e-reader for less than $50 at WallyWorld and most books will be less than $5 to download. Remember the first CD players, the Sony Discman? Over 600 bills, you can get them now for ten, but of course no one buys them anymore because all their music is downloaded to their Iphone.

Ain't technology great?

49 >>>I didn't end up getting a Kindle for my mom, because I didn't realize the 3G ones were still $139 or more. Maybe they'll drop the prices in the next month or two... Yeah the 3G is expensive. It's also sort of unnecessary if you just download this stuff before a trip (they're all wireless, hooking up with your modem). The number of times you will be caught without a book and lots of time to read it and yet had no planning time to download something are going to be pretty small. Plus I think "whispernet" allows you to download off a lot of networks, not just 3G. Not sure about that. I got the 3G because I don't plan very much, and also, it's Santa so he can spring for the extra cost. I don't know how necessary it really is.

They can get cell phone service about 10-20 minutes away, so a Kindle with 3G should work there, and they could even use it for minimal web browsing. Nearest wi-fi they can use is closer to 45 minutes away.

Actually you don't need either 3G or the wi-fi if you have access through your computer.  It is much easier to access Amazon and the other download sites via your computer and download from there.

But having 3G and wi-fi allows you to access while on the go .

70 lorien... sure. I've seen them. I get they are very manageable. It just seems so niche. It's useful in a small number of specific corner-case situations. Otherwise its utility is easily duplicated by a laptop. I suppose that's an odd statement since I'm enjoying the niche Kindle.

In 4 years or less there will be a kindle-like device GIVEN away that's tied to one store (such as Amazon). Probably Amazon will be the first to do this.

I thought Amazon was already pretty much selling them at a loss.

I have an old-timey kindle with keyboard and joystick that I bought back in the days when I still had some of that sweet software money. It fits in my purse and is filled up with free off-copyright works - mostly 19th c novels but also history. Have it with my all the time and it really came in handy recently when I had to spend an unplanned few hours in a depressing flourescent-lit waiting room.

I got to use a kindle fire for the weekend when they first came out and I hated it. Too much glare and I felt like amazon designed it mostly as a way to get money out of my pocket. Plus it sucked for twitter which would have been the internet thing on it I would have used the most. Maybe in a few iterations it'll have a better screen and I'll have more money.

As for e-readers, been using a Nook color for about 3 months now.  It's great, since our library has a pretty good selection online.  And since it boots from the SD card, you can run a full-featured version of Android on it.  So I can use it to check email, surf the web, etc...

Good one.  Just opened the box.  The only instructions are on a thin piece of cardboard about the size of a playing card.  I just love that the way to get information about how to use a Kindle is to use the Kindle to get to the User's Guide on the Home Screen.  Tip 1 displaying now seems to be about using the Kindle one handed.  Good to know.

Has B&N, and with the Adobe I can access other ebooks. It supports the read and lend from B&N as well as my local library. It has a browser so I can access email, weather. etc. and generally look around the web. It has a card slot which is nice since even the Kindle Fire doesn't. The best part...it was only $67.00 at Christmas since they've come out with newer models. It doesn't support You Tube and the games aren't much. But that isn't why I bought it, so I'm happy.

181 I got tech overload for Christmas.

Finally convinced my wife to abandon her Palm -- (a Centro) for an iPhone.  Getting her weaned from her beloved Palm OS to the 21st Century was going to be painful anyway, but the death of her sync cable finally got her to move.  But she keeps expecting silly little things like being able to sync her to-do lists to on my old Macbook Pro I'm loaning her since her Dell laptop died and a replacement is on order and she doesn't want anything to do with iCloud and she wants the iPhone to work just exactly like her Palm used to and . . . (you don't want to see a grown man cry . . .)

And, on top of that, out of nowhere, a sister-in-law gave me a Kindle Fire.  I already have a Kindle (and, in about an hour's playing with the Fire, might keep it--I dunno--I like the e-ink a lot for reading, and the Fire's quite a bit heavier.)

Tech overload.

Here's a nice feature, they don't tell you about in the docs that come with: there are thousands upon thousands of free books on the 'net, and I'm talking everything from classics to today's NYT list.  If it's a popular author, it's likely out there, and you can usually find it in mobi format for the Kindle--if it's in another format, there is free software available to convert it to mobi.  I assume you're familiar with Pirate Bay and other piratical flag-hoisting sites.

Enjoy!

187 I just love that the way to get information about how to use a Kindle is to use the Kindle to get to the User's Guide on the Home Screen.

You can download the pdf from Amazon and read it on your computer. In fact, that is the best way to do it since you can have the pdf open while actually following the instructions on the Kindle.

194 As for why an iPad or KF...I loved my little Dell laptop a year and a half ago, supplemented by my hefty desktop in the home office. Made fun of Apple people, iPods, iTunes, iPads, iAnything. Never had an interest in an iPad. Then, on my 40th birthday my parents, sister and brother surprised me with one. I began using it because I felt they'd be a bit hurt if I didn't...a part of me wanted to return it and not let the money spent go to waste. One month later I realized a week had gone by since I'd cracked my laptop open. Now, the iPad is with me far too often, the kids nicknamed me iDad, and my laptop sits dusty on a shelf. It's one of those things you don't realize you "needed" until you have it. As for Kindles...if you want a reader one of the e-ink regular kindles is probably the best bet, though I use my iPad unless I know I'm going to be outside in the sun or reading for hours. My wife and I got a kindle fire for the family to use...us and three kids ages 5-12. It's a huge hit with my wife and kids so far...my oldest has already stated his intention to buy his own with his hard earned savings from odd jobs, and he's a saver not a spender. I'm more impressed than I thought I would be, but it's no iPad, and it's too small for me. For the price, however, there is a ton of value. If a 9 or 10" Fire gets released, I believe Apple will have to drastically wow us yet again or cut prices. I love competition.

I watched a bit of that show; what I don't understand is- how are the moonshiners not opening themselves up to prosecution by appearing on TV?  Aren't they essentially confessing to a federal crime?

The entire premise of the show revolves around the cat and mouse game between the "revenuers" and the moonshiners, but once the show airs the feds know exactly who's doing what and how.

And yeah, I've wanted to try my hand at distilling for a long time but never got around to making / buying a small still.

Making homemade wine is where it's at. It's easy and usually comes out great. The best way to do it, though, is in 55 gallon barrels that cost around $400 and weigh about 450 lbs.

Home brewing beer is fraught with difficulties. Everything has to be surgically sterile or you get a batch of moldy goop. And after the initial batch you have to re-steralize everything and heavily research what you want to buy to make a beer to your liking. It's nerdy, cultish thing so I'll prolly make one batch for shits and grins and throw or give the kit away.

I've always been a closet chemist, however, so I may actually make a decent batch and take it up as a hobby.

Getting her weaned from her beloved Palm OS to the 21st Century was going to be painful anyway, but the death of her sync cable finally got her to move.  But she keeps expecting silly little things like being able to sync her to-do lists to on my old Macbook Pro I'm loaning her since her Dell laptop died and a replacement is on order and she doesn't want anything to do with iCloud and she wants the iPhone to work just exactly like her Palm used to and . . . Because we're not going to win over the squishy but necessary middle / independent vote by going full no-holds-barred attack mode.  That would further the "Republicans are too extreme" meme that the Dems have been pushing.

Even if his job performance approval ratings aren't very good, his personal approval rating is still relatively high.  Going with personal attacks would be a bad idea no matter how much the Republican base might eat it up.

The "Obama is a decent human being but doing a poor job" avenue might not be the red meat conservatives want to hear, but it's a better strategy.

262 Have you ever tries apple cider? It is supposedly a lot easier than beer. I have been thinking about giving it a try when I have the space and time, due to the fact that I really like the stuff but can't afford it.

Making beer really isn't very difficult, especially if you use malt syrup.

Everything has to be sterile, but that's just a matter of using a dilute bleach solution and rinsing everything out.

For me, the most time consuming and unpleasant part of the process is bottling, though I do have some of the 5 liter mini-kegs which makes things easier.

281 I got a kindle fire and love it.  Yes, I know it's essentially a content delivery system for Amazon, but I'm willing to be manipulated.

Highlights: beautiful screen, great size (get a cover, don't know why they aren't included), intuitive.  Battery life seems reasonable, much more so than my stupid android phone that I got rid of.

Low: the touch screen can be kind of squirrelly.  sometimes you need to hit something a couple times to get it to work.

Things to consider:  If you're an Amazon prime member, you get free, unlimited streaming access to a slew of movies and TV shows.  The library isn't humongous, but it'll get bigger.

Also, take advantage of storage on the Amazon cloud.  Prime members get 5GB free, and you can upload to unlimited for 20 bucks a year.  Granted, I wouldn't put anything confidential up there, but for songs and video, it's over a third less than Carbonite.  Once you upload your music, you can access it from the Kindle anywhere you have a WIFI connection.  That's how Amazon rationalizes the paltry storage.

All things being equal I would rather not receive any gifts since I am a bit too sentimental and show a little to much concern for gifts from loved ones as opposed to things I purchase for myself. Of course there is also the fact that any gift I receive I am paying for myself. Oh year, when you factor all of those things in I am not especially easy to shop for.

320 For the record, I do not care about paying for it myself. I tend to be a bit frugal and very utilitarian. I prefer that everything I buy break or become threadbare before it is replaced; nothing funky or fashionable that will become outdated or is designed to become obsolete. That being the case I pretty much have everything I want and do not want or need anything. So, if you go out and buy me something the likelihood that it is "wasted" in my view, is pretty high. I would be fine if the same resources were applied to buying someone else something.

337 321 actually here's another question for the techies here

so suppose I want to buy a digital flat screen TV, but I don't want to purchase a cable or satellite TV subscription

what is the cheapest and most reliable (and legal!) way to broadcast movies or TV shows on that TV?

I already have DSL service and a wireless router

Posted by: chemjeff at December 26, 2011 05:40 PM (Pvej1)

You can try a Roku. It delivers content from Netflix and Hulu Plus in HD.

Speaking of Netflix subscriptions, how do those things work? Do they bill you a flat monthly fee for all the content or is any segregated to more expensive tiers? I have Bright House, but it's kinda pricy and I don't get movies on the regular channels like HBO because they mostly suck. And I don't watch local TV, at least not the news. I think most of the good channels can be had online anyway.

341 Just went to play with my fore-mentioned Pandigital Novel. My youngest son stayed up all night downloading apps and making OS improvements, then took off out of town to see my oldest son. There is now a cryptic sticky note on the screen about reformatting the SD card, and do this, and try that, and there is now no music on it and it won't connect to the wi-fi. I knew I should have put it under my pillow before going to bed.

Posted by: bergerbilder at December 26, 2011 05:24 PM

LOL.  Yep, never let a son touch anything.  Mine told me the Adobe Digital Edition would allow me to download from Amazon to my Pan Digital.  So far I haven't really tried it but I sure as heck am not going to let him "upgrade" it for me.  Also I know I can upgrade it to access You Tube but I don't really care that much to do it.  I like it the way it is just fine.   Try going to some of the forums on this, I usually can find some answers at one of them. Slate Droid is usually pretty good.   Good luck.

What were the raw ingredients? Apple juice and yeast from a a wine making shop or wine yeast and grocery store store apple juice?

4 apple trees and one cousin to assist in coring. Smashed them in poly buckets with a 2x6. Bloiling water with sugar and Chamapgne yeast from the wine supply shop. Bought my first carboys at a yard sale for one dollar each.Found a 14-gallon Nalgene carboy for 2 dollrs and it's full of pear wine.

Posted by: Cicerokid at December 26, 2011 05:11 PM (PiKUm)

Thanks. I've got a large Bartlett pear tree that bears heavy yields every other year. I want to try making some pear wine and your recipe sounds like a start. I imagine you have to somehow filter the juice and I've read all sorts of nutty sounding ways to do it.

True Nalgene carboys (can be autoclaved) cot about $150.00 new, so you're probably buying a polypropylene equivalent. They're still excellent for home wine brewing. I've never heard of 14 gallon ones, however. If I can scare some up, I might try making some home made wine from six gallon buckets of juice this summer. My buddy has some that look about five gallons and he's very happy with them.

348 what is the cheapest and most reliable (and legal!) way to broadcast movies or TV shows on that TV?

Obviously an antenna is the cheapest rout. I have a TV upstairs with a simple piece of wire run into the attic and I get all three networks and about 8 channels.

For movies I have been investigating that myself. The first think you need to do is go to one of the sites that will check your internet speed because that is critical for sites like Netflix. The newer BluRay players have direct links to all the major movie suppliers now so that you can connect your router to the BluRay and watch movies through that (provided speed is adequate).

Posted by: chemjeff at December 26, 2011 05:46 PM

Hook your computer up to the TV with and HDMI cable or if you don't have an HDMI port on your computer, use VGA or S-video  and add connection to the headphone port to get sound.  But HDMI would be best.  Realize that ties up your computer and it has to be in somewhat close proximity to the tv.  I'd go instead with either the Roku 2XS or Net Gear Neo media streaming boxes, since they have ethernet ports in case you have problems connecting to WiFi.

I installed a free program on my laptop called Serviio, which when enabled allows me to see and play my available media files on my TV via my BluRay, all completely wirelessly. Even though the bluray is drawing from my laptop across the room, im able to go online wiithout interrupting the video. It is extremely sweet.

361 The Roku or Apple TV will only do what you could do with a WiFi built in BluRay. Theyre pretty cheap...under $150, so i dont see the point of buying an old fashioned dvd player when the BR would play both. The key is to get a DLNA capable WiFi built in BluRay.

You probably don't want to go the wi-fi route anyway though because it is a LOT slower than direct connect.

Probably not, at least I have never seen one that does it.

404 I had problems connecting mine to my network too for a while, reset the router and the Roku over and over without any luck so i just hooked the ethernet up. After a few months i decided to try to connect it to the network again and it worked fine, there wasn't an update that i saw so i don't know what was going on.

Posted by: booger at December 26, 2011 06:17 PM

Some of the forums said it was a problem with certain servers and routers.  I can't change my router since it's part of my Verizon service.  Funny though, the new Roku was the only thing I had problems connecting to my WiFi.  I decided it was easier to just get a long ethernet cable.   LOL

405 399 Oh and I see that Angry Birds is included free with Roku 2 XS - but how in the world do you play Angry Birds on a TV?  It is not a touch screen.  that seems really weird to me.

It's just like it is in Google Chrome except you use the remote control instead of the mouse to control it, press one button to activate the slingshot and let it go to make 'em fly etc.

You're boy is misinformed. Adobe Digital Editions are EPUB files with Adobe's DRM.

You can download a file from Amazon, strip off the DRM, then convert it to EPUB via Calibre (freeware e-book utility) but nothing on an EPUB device is going to enable direct use of Amazon's DRMed MOBI files.

You'll have a simpler time buying the books already in EPUB format from B&N or whoever and stripping off their DRM. It saves a step. Or download it from a torrent site and just send the author money directly, which is what I do.

409 The ranch was in regards to your girandoles...I get the reference, it made me laugh!

Oh, I am about to shame myself in front of you, billyg; I am too much of a dweeb to make pop culture references. I really meant girandoles. They are candelabra, with prisms. Mine are late 18th century.

Please come to the ONT anyway, though, I swear I won't ruin it with antiques talk!

Oh, I didn't tell y'all what my Christmas present was. SIL + DIL + GD the Youngest are moving in about a good Frisbee throw away from B'Gal and me in a couple of weeks. I'll get to see her (GD) a lot more often than I do now, and may even get to pick her up from elementary school. (Built-in-babysitter duty, yeah, I know.)

She loves riding in my old pickup truck. She's six now and getting old enough to be able to tell when I'm making a joke with her.

207 EdAnger (or anyone else contemplating homebrewing):

For sure thing beer recipes, try Jamil Zainasheff / John Pamer's "Brewing Classic Styles"

Most recipe sources are hit and miss at best. This one is by far the best collection I've seen.

This book assumes you know how to brew already.  For brewing basics to advanced techniques, try John Palmer's "How to Brew". Its current, has up to date best practices, is easy to digest and on brew day when you're juggling 3 things at once, its easy to find what you are looking for. I have the book, but he also puts all the in formation on his website for free.

Also, while it is correct that you do need to clean and sanitize everything, you do not need to sterilize. Sanitizing is pretty easy with food grade sanitizers like StarSan.  Let it soak for 1-2 minutes and you are good to go.

You can also use a bleach solution but StarSan does not require rinsing only drip drying.

Its a great hobby that combines chemistry, biology, gadgeteering, and culinary skills.

I LOVE my Kindle Fire.

Another nice thing about e-readers, for people like me who like books:  less clutter in the house.  I was totally out of space for more books, but it didn't stop me from buying them.  I still have books piled up in places they don't belong, but at least those piles haven't grown (much) in a long time.

480 Damn, I can't talk about much of what I got for Christmas. Here, I'll show you...

I got a pair of the world's best slippers (IMO), which are made by...oh, wait, I can't tell you, my wife got the wrong size because she didn't want to spoil the surprise and read something from just the wrong shoe in my closet, so if I tell you, my size might be gone when she exchanges it....

I got a check from my wonderful mother-in-law toward a cooking implement I've been wanting for a long time, and now I can get it, it's...damn, it's one of those ebay kind of things, can't have lurkers bidding against me...

Crap. Well, I got James Peterson's Sauces. About time I learned to make demiglace, not just Chinese, Thai, and Cajun food.

482 Ace - a really nice thing about Amazon is that you can get samples of books before you buy, to be sure if you actually *want* to buy it.  Also it's a convenient way of saving stuff you do want to buy later, rather than in a wish list if you don't want to stick it in a wish list.  (I don't want my mother buying me all those books, and she would if she saw them there.)

484 476 "Clarence apparently hasn't read the Jobs bio. Steve didn't have a lot of kind words for Obama."

True - but Jobs offered to run his 2012 campaign.  I wish Jobs could.

Let me guess. You have a "seeing talent wasted" fetish.

485 For those of you who got the Nook Color, you can hack it to make it a full-fledged Android tablet if you don't mind getting your hands dirty in the OS.
http://tinyurl.com/6wfr9b4

I had a Viewsonic gTablet that I got a while back at woot.com with the intention of rooting it, but thanks to Steve Jobs I have become too lazy to root the thing so it didn't get used much.  (The installed OS sucks!)  The Kindle Fire has replaced that POS.

486 472 Faves: Jimmy Page, James Honeyman-Scott, Mike Campbell, Johnny Marr, Don Rich, James Burton, Elliot Easton.

James Honeymann Scott is one of my faves too, him and Elliot Easton never get the credit they deserve. Quick stupid story, the first band i was in i played rhythm and the kid who played lead only knew one solo, Easton's solo in Shake It up, so that's the solo he played for every single song we did. Judas Priest song? Shake It Up solo. 38 Special song? Shake It Up solo and so on.

487 They're great for activities with the kids--free apps such as riddles, jokes, trivia, hangman...  They are much better for interacting with a group than a laptop is.  Also, cheaper than an iPad so I don't worry so much when the kids take it.

490 My daughter is a big Tintin fan, so when I was in London a few weeks ago, I brought her "Tintin in the Congo" which is only available at the Tintin shop in London in a special "collectors's edition". It has not been sold widely (or in this country) since the 1970's due to its very racist portrayal of the Congolese. She loved her "racist Tintin"....

493 I got a Kindle Touch for C'mas.  (OK, I'm not an early adopter.)  First book loaded on to it: 'The Dancer in the Dark,' by Thomas Fuller and Brad Strickland.  A rattling little horror yarn set in N. Georgia in 1928.  Recommended.

494 Yankeefifth, the site isn't even accepting tinyurl's, so I cannot post links, but I got a nice set of throwers, and a very nice damascus bladed loclback.

I like.

Jobs did no such thing. He offered to make campaign ads. A vastly different thing and not an honest offer since Jobs was well aware it was extremely improbable he'd live to see 2012.

499 I came to the Kindle late, about six months ago.  Being an addicted reader (when I eat, when I shit, when everyone else has gone to bed, when "Access Hollywood" is blaring away...), I instantly loved it.

There's Kindle apps for phones, Apple devices, and PC's - they're all free and come in handy when your Kindle is somewhere else.

You sort of have to fight your allegiance to pulp - the smell, the feel...but once you get over it, it's a no-brainer.

500 Got a Kindle a year and a half ago.

On my computer, downloaded to date, exactly 22,191 (8.93GB) books.  I put 30+ at a time on the Kindle.  At the moment there are 17 pages of books on the Kindle 'Home' page.

I even found a jailbreak OS that lets me customize the random pictures it shows.

There are so many places to get free books you never need buy.  There are conversion programs for book types, or you can get Kindle to do the conversion.

...and I still  buy the books when I don't want to wait for a free copy.

I'm obsessed with my Kindle.

I've got a Sinclair ZX80 with 2K of RAM. It runs BASIC and is from the pre-Timex buyout. I think it'll do Pong with an upgrade.

504 I just love it when people claiming to not be liberals tell the right that if they (conservatives)got rid of all that social conservatism, they can join the modern day, popular "conservative" group.  That is exactly the path the present day ultra-lefty liberals set their feet on 20-30 years ago and arrived where they are today.  We do not need a dem and dem-lite party....and, unfortunately, that is what we have.

505 My mom got me a Keurig Mini plus for Christmas. My MIL got me the 27 K-cup Carousel. Hubby got me the 36 K-Cup drawer and $25 gift certificate to a local dealer called Big Cat Coffees which sells 24 packs for a good price. So I had a very Keurig Christmas this year. On top of that, my stepkids got me a couple of anime t-shirts -- not only am I an anime fan, but I also write about it locally for Examiner.com and am chaperoning a trip to one of the bigger conventions in April.
