— Ace I got a Kindle. I'm really enjoying it. I'm going to review it at some point, but at the moment, I'm really loving this object.

Unless Kindle's got a clip for reading glasses that can accomodate the tape in the middle holding them together, the device is worthless to me.

Hated it. I sent it back after 3 weeks.
I think it's still for sale for $79. The Touch is well worth the extra 20 bucks, and it has twice the storage capacity.

Dad gave me an interesting old book, Rescue Tug. This book was about the effort by the ocean-going tug, Turmoil, to save the wrecked cargo ship, Flying Enterprise. I had been flipping through the old man's copy a few months ago and he tracked-down a copy for me.

You shouldn't read in bed with a book on your chest. You'll get a crook in your neck, destroy your posture and ruin your game with wimmins. Read on the toilet instead.

Ace, my mom lives in far outer Bumblef*ck. No cell phone service at the house, no internet service, can't even use the phone for dial up...when it's working, which today it is not.
They can get cell phone service about 10-20 minutes away, so a Kindle with 3G should work there, and they could even use it for minimal web browsing. Nearest wi-fi they can use is closer to 45 minutes away.

Actually you don't need either 3G or the wi-fi if you have access through your computer. It is much easier to access Amazon and the other download sites via your computer and download from there.
But having 3G and wi-fi allows you to access while on the go .

I have an old-timey kindle with keyboard and joystick that I bought back in the days when I still had some of that sweet software money. It fits in my purse and is filled up with free off-copyright works - mostly 19th c novels but also history. Have it with my all the time and it really came in handy recently when I had to spend an unplanned few hours in a depressing flourescent-lit waiting room.
I got to use a kindle fire for the weekend when they first came out and I hated it. Too much glare and I felt like amazon designed it mostly as a way to get money out of my pocket. Plus it sucked for twitter which would have been the internet thing on it I would have used the most. Maybe in a few iterations it'll have a better screen and I'll have more money.

Sounds a bit too rural for easy e-reader use. Unless they get a satellite dish for internet, which probably doesn't mean enough to them to bother.
When I sent my Marine nephew, then in Afghanistan, a Nook I had it preloaded with about a thousand books from, um, places. Avoided the issue of connectivity entirely.

Yeh, not easy, which is why the 3G version is a must. Getting new reading material with only a 20 minute drive and being able to do at least a little web browsing would be a big improvement over "once a week wi-fi at the laundromat with the laptop" access.

My car broke for Christmas. Some electrical switch went bad while I was going 70 on the highway through a rainstorm and the engine quite cold. So, I couldn't get to see my family or celebrate, and I have to get the car towed and fixed. The only good point was that I was only about 23 miles into my 400 mile trip, and there was someone in my church who could come and pick me up and take me back home.

Unless it's a new flat-panel TV that She Who Must Be Obeyed and I gave each other (we had a small CRT one that was about 8 years old in the living room). Definitely a guy's toy.
As for e-readers, been using a Nook color for about 3 months now. It's great, since our library has a pretty good selection online. And since it boots from the SD card, you can run a full-featured version of Android on it. So I can use it to check email, surf the web, etc...
Since I'm a pointy-headed academic, I can also store a lot of papers I'm currently reading and catch up on things when I get tired of the in-laws (they've been visiting for the last few days).

Good one. Just opened the box. The only instructions are on a thin piece of cardboard about the size of a playing card. I just love that the way to get information about how to use a Kindle is to use the Kindle to get to the User's Guide on the Home Screen. Tip 1 displaying now seems to be about using the Kindle one handed. Good to know.

I got the Pan Digital Novel MuiltiMedia E-Reader Android 2.2. Yeah not much as far as Android goes but I bought it as a color e-reader and it works great for that. Has B&N, and with the Adobe I can access other ebooks. It supports the read and lend from B&N as well as my local library. It has a browser so I can access email, weather. etc. and generally look around the web. It has a card slot which is nice since even the Kindle Fire doesn't. The best part...it was only $67.00 at Christmas since they've come out with newer models. It doesn't support You Tube and the games aren't much. But that isn't why I bought it, so I'm happy.

Finally convinced my wife to abandon her Palm -- (a Centro) for an iPhone. Getting her weaned from her beloved Palm OS to the 21st Century was going to be painful anyway, but the death of her sync cable finally got her to move. But she keeps expecting silly little things like being able to sync her to-do lists to on my old Macbook Pro I'm loaning her since her Dell laptop died and a replacement is on order and she doesn't want anything to do with iCloud and she wants the iPhone to work just exactly like her Palm used to and . . . (you don't want to see a grown man cry . . .)
And, on top of that, out of nowhere, a sister-in-law gave me a Kindle Fire. I already have a Kindle (and, in about an hour's playing with the Fire, might keep it--I dunno--I like the e-ink a lot for reading, and the Fire's quite a bit heavier.)
Tech overload.

The Kindle is awesome, Ace...you got the right one, too. The Fire would just be a distraction, allowing you to drift away to the internet like any demonic pc. I've been reading like a madman since I got my Kindle 3 last summer.
Here's a nice feature, they don't tell you about in the docs that come with: there are thousands upon thousands of free books on the 'net, and I'm talking everything from classics to today's NYT list. If it's a popular author, it's likely out there, and you can usually find it in mobi format for the Kindle--if it's in another format, there is free software available to convert it to mobi. I assume you're familiar with Pirate Bay and other piratical flag-hoisting sites.
Enjoy!

I watched a bit of that show; what I don't understand is- how are the moonshiners not opening themselves up to prosecution by appearing on TV? Aren't they essentially confessing to a federal crime?
The entire premise of the show revolves around the cat and mouse game between the "revenuers" and the moonshiners, but once the show airs the feds know exactly who's doing what and how.
And yeah, I've wanted to try my hand at distilling for a long time but never got around to making / buying a small still.

Making homemade wine is where it's at. It's easy and usually comes out great. The best way to do it, though, is in 55 gallon barrels that cost around $400 and weigh about 450 lbs.Home brewing beer is fraught with difficulties. Everything has to be surgically sterile or you get a batch of moldy goop. And after the initial batch you have to re-steralize everything and heavily research what you want to buy to make a beer to your liking. It's nerdy, cultish thing so I'll prolly make one batch for shits and grins and throw or give the kit away.
I've always been a closet chemist, however, so I may actually make a decent batch and take it up as a hobby.

Because we're not going to win over the squishy but necessary middle / independent vote by going full no-holds-barred attack mode. That would further the "Republicans are too extreme" meme that the Dems have been pushing.
Even if his job performance approval ratings aren't very good, his personal approval rating is still relatively high. Going with personal attacks would be a bad idea no matter how much the Republican base might eat it up.
The "Obama is a decent human being but doing a poor job" avenue might not be the red meat conservatives want to hear, but it's a better strategy.

Making beer really isn't very difficult, especially if you use malt syrup.
Everything has to be sterile, but that's just a matter of using a dilute bleach solution and rinsing everything out.
For me, the most time consuming and unpleasant part of the process is bottling, though I do have some of the 5 liter mini-kegs which makes things easier.

Highlights: beautiful screen, great size (get a cover, don't know why they aren't included), intuitive. Battery life seems reasonable, much more so than my stupid android phone that I got rid of.
Low: the touch screen can be kind of squirrelly. sometimes you need to hit something a couple times to get it to work.
Things to consider: If you're an Amazon prime member, you get free, unlimited streaming access to a slew of movies and TV shows. The library isn't humongous, but it'll get bigger.
Also, take advantage of storage on the Amazon cloud. Prime members get 5GB free, and you can upload to unlimited for 20 bucks a year. Granted, I wouldn't put anything confidential up there, but for songs and video, it's over a third less than Carbonite. Once you upload your music, you can access it from the Kindle anywhere you have a WIFI connection. That's how Amazon rationalizes the paltry storage.

Something like a Roku box would probably work best, but you'd still need a Netflix or Hulu subscription to make the most of it. An antenna will work for local channels now that broadcast has gone digital.

Speaking of Netflix subscriptions, how do those things work? Do they bill you a flat monthly fee for all the content or is any segregated to more expensive tiers? I have Bright House, but it's kinda pricy and I don't get movies on the regular channels like HBO because they mostly suck. And I don't watch local TV, at least not the news. I think most of the good channels can be had online anyway.

4 apple trees and one cousin to assist in coring. Smashed them in poly buckets with a 2x6. Bloiling water with sugar and Chamapgne yeast from the wine supply shop. Bought my first carboys at a yard sale for one dollar each.Found a 14-gallon Nalgene carboy for 2 dollrs and it's full of pear wine.

Thanks. I've got a large Bartlett pear tree that bears heavy yields every other year. I want to try making some pear wine and your recipe sounds like a start. I imagine you have to somehow filter the juice and I've read all sorts of nutty sounding ways to do it.True Nalgene carboys (can be autoclaved) cot about $150.00 new, so you're probably buying a polypropylene equivalent. They're still excellent for home wine brewing. I've never heard of 14 gallon ones, however. If I can scare some up, I might try making some home made wine from six gallon buckets of juice this summer. My buddy has some that look about five gallons and he's very happy with them.

Obviously an antenna is the cheapest rout. I have a TV upstairs with a simple piece of wire run into the attic and I get all three networks and about 8 channels.
For movies I have been investigating that myself. The first think you need to do is go to one of the sites that will check your internet speed because that is critical for sites like Netflix. The newer BluRay players have direct links to all the major movie suppliers now so that you can connect your router to the BluRay and watch movies through that (provided speed is adequate).

Hook your computer up to the TV with and HDMI cable or if you don't have an HDMI port on your computer, use VGA or S-video and add connection to the headphone port to get sound. But HDMI would be best. Realize that ties up your computer and it has to be in somewhat close proximity to the tv. I'd go instead with either the Roku 2XS or Net Gear Neo media streaming boxes, since they have ethernet ports in case you have problems connecting to WiFi.

Yes, I have a cheap Visio I got from WalMart for $80 that will do it. You must connect it with a cat5e though as it has no wi-fi (you should have at least 5 of those on your wi-fi router though.)
You probably don't want to go the wi-fi route anyway though because it is a LOT slower than direct connect.
Can you do that with a DVD player?
Probably not, at least I have never seen one that does it.

Some of the forums said it was a problem with certain servers and routers. I can't change my router since it's part of my Verizon service. Funny though, the new Roku was the only thing I had problems connecting to my WiFi. I decided it was easier to just get a long ethernet cable. LOL

You're boy is misinformed. Adobe Digital Editions are EPUB files with Adobe's DRM.
You can download a file from Amazon, strip off the DRM, then convert it to EPUB via Calibre (freeware e-book utility) but nothing on an EPUB device is going to enable direct use of Amazon's DRMed MOBI files.
You'll have a simpler time buying the books already in EPUB format from B&N or whoever and stripping off their DRM. It saves a step. Or download it from a torrent site and just send the author money directly, which is what I do.

Oh, I didn't tell y'all what my Christmas present was. SIL + DIL + GD the Youngest are moving in about a good Frisbee throw away from B'Gal and me in a couple of weeks. I'll get to see her (GD) a lot more often than I do now, and may even get to pick her up from elementary school. (Built-in-babysitter duty, yeah, I know.)
She loves riding in my old pickup truck. She's six now and getting old enough to be able to tell when I'm making a joke with her.

207 EdAnger (or anyone else contemplating homebrewing):
For sure thing beer recipes, try Jamil Zainasheff / John Pamer's "Brewing Classic Styles"
Most recipe sources are hit and miss at best. This one is by far the best collection I've seen.
This book assumes you know how to brew already. For brewing basics to advanced techniques, try John Palmer's "How to Brew". Its current, has up to date best practices, is easy to digest and on brew day when you're juggling 3 things at once, its easy to find what you are looking for. I have the book, but he also puts all the in formation on his website for free.

Also, while it is correct that you do need to clean and sanitize everything, you do not need to sterilize. Sanitizing is pretty easy with food grade sanitizers like StarSan. Let it soak for 1-2 minutes and you are good to go.
You can also use a bleach solution but StarSan does not require rinsing only drip drying.
Its a great hobby that combines chemistry, biology, gadgeteering, and culinary skills.

Quick stupid story, the first band i was in i played rhythm and the kid who played lead only knew one solo, Easton's solo in Shake It up, so that's the solo he played for every single song we did. Judas Priest song? Shake It Up solo. 38 Special song? Shake It Up solo and so on.

...and I still buy the books when I don't want to wait for a free copy.
