Conservatives Win Landslide Victory in Spain
— rdbrewer

Conservatives won 187 of 350 seats in the parliament. Socialists won 110, their worst evah. From the Washington Post:

Spanish conservatives won a historically large mandate at the polls Sunday, freeing them to make deep austerity cuts as they struggle to pull the countryÂ’s economy out of a tailspin.

In an election marked by bitter disappointment and desperation over the euro zoneÂ’s highest unemployment rate, the Socialists who have led the country since 2004 were cast out from office as many of their staunchest supporters turned elsewhere, according to a national TV exit poll released after the polls closed.

Left-leaning, high-tax, big-regulation, big-government states and countries are suffering the most. Maybe it's starting to dawn on these people that bureaucrats are not that smart, that they can't be trusted, and that putting them in charge of everything isn't such a good idea.

In related news, the EU bans claims water can prevent dehydration.

That, plus allowing people to vote themselves other people's money. When people figure out they can do that, why on earth would they stop?

Best-case scenario: Spain manages to reduce its exposure to Portugal, which is truly toxic, and to Italy which will probably have to cut itself off from Sicily (at least); and the Cons make nice with Germany having proven that their voters are serious.

33 You are missing the real import of this--which is that Spain is the birthplace of the OWS movement. In May (May Day of course), young socialists "occupied" the main square of Madrid--The Plaza del Sol and the nearby Plaza del Carmen. They erected a tent city and held nightly "teach ins" to instruct other young socialist on the tenants of anti-corporatism, anti-capitalism and the injustice of making people (especially young socialists!) work for a living. (The little bastards kept me awake all night when I was staying at a hotel next to Plaza del Carment before an early morning flight to Marrakech in late July). When I got back from Marrakech in early August, the cops had moved in and torn down the tent city. The young socialists, of course, rioted. It was pretty fun wandering around with all the hookers and young socialists as they "reoccupied" Plaza del Sol. The end result though? The good guys win.....

43 Do the conservatives have a mandate to impose needed, fundamental reforms? No. They did not campaign for that. Does the electorate have the stomach for needed, fundamental reforms? No. They are punishing the Socialists for "austerity" measures. Voters blame the Socialists for Spain's problems, which is largely correct but only in the long view. The Socialists did not screw everything up in Spain in the last few years. It's been a long-term project to screw things up. The PP can't possibly meet the voters' expectations. If they do nothing, the economy will continue to slide and they will be removed. If they take the necessary steps, they will enrage the electorate and be voted out. Either way, it's a one-term thing. A country with stupid, lazy, ignorant, unrealistic voters is NOT going to elect principled politicians and is not going to get principled leadership. Spain is doomed. Until the Germans take over and start directing the Spanish economy, it's only going to get worse.

132 Dadgummedest thing about Spain: Went to town with some of the younger fellers who had been there before (my first trip) to "close the bars".  Drank gallons of crazy liquors that didn't even have names, just numbers (86, 103, etc.).  I also learned that if you ordered rum and coke, they put in majority rum with a little coke - whew!  What I wanted, they call a coke y rum.  They turned the lights up around 2am and I thought it was over.  We went to some late night restaurant/nightclub still serving.  Headed back through town around 4 and the frikkin' bars were open again!  I gave up about 6 and went to bed.

Nothing in the last few hundred years comes to mind, other than some cool music in the 1500s and 1600s, and classical guitar design as we know it.

141 Spain's only course of action is to milk Brussels for as much cash and the best terms possible, give their citizens time to get all of their cash into English or American banks, then exit the Euro and devalue everything. You don't have to go so hard on the austerity if your paying them with new money.

They produced a few decent artists, helped briefly in Iraq, some good food. Not massive innovations but leaps ahead of anything out of the ME (not counting Israel or pre-civil war Lebanon) in the past century.

151 When I was in Costa Rica, I was told by a local that on the Pacific coast they were building a development that would be "just like Acapulco, but without the Mexicans".

I've mostly enjoyed my visits to Mexico, before it got too dangerous, and their toilets are waaay better than the one I used in the Soviet Union when I went there on a cruise back in the '80s. USSR had people in space at the time, but the tourist toilet at the palace in Yalta was a hole in the ground.
