— Dave in Texas Cieling? i before.. no wait, ok "ceiling."
Voters were asked to imagine being a lawmaker in Congress who had to cast an up-or-down vote on raising the debt ceiling. The poll found 35 percent would vote in favor of increasing the limit, while 60 percent would vote against it.
Registered voters. The kind of people who get polled that politicians pay attention to.
On the question of increased revenues taxes:
A 63-percent majority of voters thinks raising taxes during an economic downturn is a bad idea. ThatÂ’s down from a high of 80 percent who thought so two years ago (August 2009).
I suspect the change is a result of the building argument over extending the Bush tax cuts, but I can live with a 63% majority.
This was an interesting tidbit:
On the whole, the word that best describes how voters feel about the deficit situation is “concern” (40 percent), followed by “anger” (23 percent), “embarrassment” (13 percent), “indifference” (10 percent), “despair” (5 percent) “shock” (4 percent), "kinda funny in the pants" (3 percent), "verklempt" (2 percent), and "I got a raging deficit boner" (1 percent).
Those last three well within the margin of error.

"Revenues" is a poll tested, focused grouped term. Any time a dem uses it they should immediately be interrupted with "you mean taxes?"
Any republican that uses it should be taken to the woodshed, figuratively of course.
Actually, anyoen who uses it should be subject to both.

"...But House Republicans have other plans. They are considering pairing the $1.5 trillion in spending cuts with a $1.5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, according to Senate GOP sources. Or they could take a portion of those cuts and match it with an equal amount increase in the debt limit."
$ of cuts = $ of increase

People are too stupid to understand that when the government lets them keep a smaller amount of the money they make, it's actually better for them.
They are also too stupid to understand that when we borrow money from other countries, it's like free money. Free money for us to give out to them when they behave themselves, so they don't die of their stupidity.

Everything I've seen is cuts spread over 10 or 12 years, so any cuts after year one are imaginary. The deal is not significantly different from raising the limit with no cuts at all. So if that's where the negotiations are heading just limit the amount of the debt limit increase and try again next year.

Hmm, Obaka wanted $2.5 trillion to get him past election year, right? If so, and the cuts are cuts not 'potential future reductions in possible spending for the sake of burnishing one's credentials,' that sounds like Obaka loses.
I'd rather slay the deficit in 2013 than lose in 2012.

While expecting the debt ceiling to go up, voters question whether spending will go down. Forty-eight percent (48%) say itÂ’s likely the debt ceiling will go up without significant spending cuts being made, with 19% who think it's Very Likely. Just 42% consider that outcome unlikely, including 11% who say it's Not At All Likely.
But if a deal is made to cut spending and raise taxes only on the
wealthy, 75% think the end result is likely to include a middle class
tax hike. Only 21% consider a middle class tax increase to be unlikely.
These figures include 44% who say an increase in taxes on the middle
class is Very Likely, while five percent (5%) say itÂ’s Not At All
Likely.
I think we have the wind at our backs.

"Likely" is a fluid measure at best and impossible this far out. They just ask "are you registered to vote?" and then ask the questions.
But they might be registered (or be in a same-day registration state) and say "no". That would indicate that they're not really interested anyway.

I read the negotiators are leaning towards making immediate cuts if they decide on doing this in increments. But weter tose would actually materilize is anyones uess.
As for an overall compromise, it is highly unlikely that McConnell-Reid will pass the House, as both sides dislike it. Likewise, the House Rs and conservative senators can't stand the Gang of 6 proposal. Outside of that, they have the Biden Commission proposal and the contingency plans being drafted by the House Budget Committee. How they craft a passable deal out of all this remains to be seen.

BTW, we hit the debt ceiling on May 16th:
A cynical person might begin to think that maybe a less-than-scrupulous person would go so far as to scare little old ladies into thinking that they might not have enough money to buy food and pay their bills by announcing that the money won’t be there unless somebody does something RIGHT NOW, and by golly, he’s going to be the one to swoop in and save the day. Never mind that the doomsday scenario would never have come to pass – the suggestion that it might and the perception that this charlatan is a white knight on a steed is all that matters.

The moderate Rs and the libs are definitely not going to allow cuts above $300B during FY '12, but one would expect they could manage at least $100B. If they really want to make people angry, cutting $50B/10yrs would do it.
