— andy The Ames, Iowa debate airs at 9pm Eastern on Fox News (Live Stream Here). Hopefully Russ from Winterset, Jay in Ames and some other Iowa morons will be here to put us some local f'n knowledge.
Participants are Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty, Ron Paul, Herman Cain, Jon Huntsman, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich
A field of dreams? I wish. But I think we can find a decent runner-up to Rick Perry in there somewhere.
Suggested drinking game terms:
- Unsustainable
- Bipartisan
- Compromise
- Federal reserve (if said by anyone but On-pay Aul-ray, shotgun a beer)
- Full faith and credit
Don't forget to keep your sidecar handy, and I also suggest pre-gaming this goat rodeo with a shot or two.
The usual procedure whereby comments are moderated by the cobloggers (until they pass out, anyway) is in effect.
Let's do this thing!
Cover It Live Is Dead [ace]: At least it seems so to me. I guess they have too much traffic.
[Andy]: I just went ahead and killed it. Fun while it lasted, morons.

I'm watching the Little League World Series Playoffs instead.
There's at least some sort of point to it.
Later, Futurama.

Let me be clear (he he he) I don't watch fox news often but the republican fox debates are way way way better and probably the only ones worth watching since instead of obnoxious questions meant to caricature and divide us they ask stuff we care about.

As opposed to at home, where I have a TV but no cable service.
I don't want to encourage the bastards.
Does watching the debate count as encouraging the bastards?
I get the feeling these guys are all placeholder candidates, wailing on each other waiting for the real candidates to show up.

I confess to only watching a few minutes of the debate between DVR shows. Twice I saw Santorium make a few good points but he went too long plus he was flapping around and whining that he did not have enough time . Newt actually had a good point, as much as I can't stand him, about the budget gang of 12 committee...and how each Congressional committee should have open discussions on how they will cut their budgets. Bachman and Pawlenty got into a cat fight about a bill in MN no one but them care about. Ron Paul wants to trade with Cuba and should be wearing a cardigan sweater with elbow patches. There are cheering sections for candidates and hootin' and hollerin'.
I did not need to hear the rest of this circus as it is fifteen months before the election, there are too many on stage for a real debate of substance, and I can see why Governor Rick Perry (Cojones-Texas) is absent from this debacle as it is rather stupid. That is all. Perry's timing, against the grain, is perfect.

RON PAUL! votes "no" on almost everything, and almost everything that comes up for a vote is terrible shit that the people don't want done. And that's about it.
It's not like he's in a district full of JEWS-DID-WTC hippie shitheads. But Democrats offset all Republican anti-war (or whatever you want to call it) votes, so it doesn't matter what Paul thinks about that stuff. He just says "no," and he wins, because that's what his constituents want.
His fans are a different story, because they're different people. They send him money to hear JEWS-DID-WTC stuff in presidential debates, I guess, and he...semi-earns it.
He probably takes votes—and definitely takes donation money—away from JEWS-DID-WTC Democrats. Net good? Possibly.

How would you feel if it was the other way around and the Federal Government forced an abortion?
If someone is the victim of rape they have already been forced to do things they didn't choose. Maybe letting them make this decision is a decent and moral thing to do.

I don't like that angle either. The baby was conceived by horrid means but it's a baby nonetheless. I have a 7 year old niece that was conceived through drugged up non-consensual sex and she means the world to me.
It's a stupid argument.

Yeah, I don't get forcing a rape victim to carry her rapist's child to term.
Considering that Plan B or Morning After and such work up to a week or two after the sex (or rape), - that is to say nothing of widespread prescription of birth control for acne which is awesome - I do not understand why anyone should have such dire need to abort a 4 month old fetus (that is, tiny baby) via surgical abortion.
I have no clue but it seems to me Plan B probably is and should be pretty standard for a rape victim in the ER. I can imagine not all rape victims may want to go to the ER or even report it, but all they have to go to is Walgreens, 24/7 over the counter no questions asked.
At that point, the zygote in question is as or less developed than the kind destroyed by fertility treatments and things which the majority of the country support being available, embryonic stem cell research (just legal, not government funded).
Even allowing the epitome of sympathy for the trauma, that you can't go to Walgreens 8 days later to avoid killing a full formed in utero baby, the sooner the better. Anyone can be asked to get their shit together and do it in 3 months at least. I don't see the need for any exception after the 1st trimester.

And just for kicks, shall we just take a little trip back down memory lane — to last year — as Kay Bailey Hutchison threatened Perry in Texas and Nancy Pelosi made Bachmann enemy #1 in Minnesota? Shall
we?
April 2010
More than ten thousand conservatives flocked to the Minneapolis convention center Wednesday afternoon for a
rally on behalf of Rep. Michele Bachmann, who was joined by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, two heroes of the Tea Party movement. Though the rally was for BachmannÂ’s reelection campaign, the controversial Minnesota lawmaker was the warm up act for Palin Â…
July 2010
Rep. Michele Bachmann pulled in a whopping $1.7 million for her campaign in the second quarter of this
year Â… Bachmann was the second-best fundraiser in the House during the first quarter. Her second quarter more than doubled it.

It made sense in context, sort of - I guess she meant that the "for" part was blank, which it is. 2.4 trillion, that part's filled in, yes, but there's another part of the check. Services rendered? What services? Re-election, obviously. But yes, it was awkwardly phrased.
I think there's no question that Bachmann did much worse in this debate than in the first one; Chris Wallace was obviously trying to create a spectacle rather than ask substantive questions. Newt got too far into it with him later, but his initial slap-down of Wallace was solid. After that he should have dismissed his protestations rather than continuing to argue.
Still, Bachmann came off better than Pawlenty, because she was attacked by Santorum as well. (Also On-ray Aul-pay, but who cares about him.) That lessened the pettiness of the exchange and made her look more like a top-tier candidate being nipped on the ankles. I think she'll take a hit initially, but she'll win the metagame narrative and bounce back up after a dip.
Romney, incidentally, was the only one who remembered to specifically ask people to vote for him. Cardinal rule, guys. Cardinal rule. Also, Pawlenty, dude - that "Goodnight and God bless America" line doesn't work when other people are speaking after you.
Santorum was dead on re: marriage and abortion, but then he's always been the best candidate on those issues.
Finally, personal to Byron York: you're a damn fine writer, but try reading your scripture. Bachmann's absolutely correct, and "submissive" means nothing like what you seem to think it means.

Yeah, I think Cain would be very good on someone elses staff in an economic/business advisor sort of capacity.

I'm really looking forward to when they finally shut out Aul-pay On-ray.
"It's perfectly okay with me if Iran gets nuclear technology! They just want respect! Our own CIA said to me that the Iranians don't want weapons!"
Yeah, shut up, you wizened old shrimp. There are at least a few people on stage who don't want to see our best friend Israel murdered. Also, would that be the same CIA that was doing such a fucking brilliant job on 09/10/01?
Also, what is this, your 11th term? Weren't you blathering about term limits at some point? Oh wait, you're obviously so essential to Congress that the same rules you endorse shouldn't apply to you. Silly me.

Came in late, but a couple of things:
1. Curious, seriously, no one cares. Not sure what you've said in this thread, but no one cares.
2. Why do people get upset about the "circular firing squad?" That's the point. They are trying to beat EACHOTHER and THEN beat Obama. That's how this shit works.
3. People seem to think we need the world's greatest candidate to beat Obama. I read things like people not being able to stand up to Obama on the debate stage? Ugh...WHAT? Have you guys seen this guy? He sucks. He can't think on his feet at all. No matter how bad any of these people on the stage looked, they can beat Obama in a debate. Period. I know this because I know every single position Obama takes is the wrong position.

Romney did fine, and I say this as someone who dislikes and distrusts Romney on the most basic issues, such as abortion. My first pick is Sarah Palin, and if she won't run, I want Michelle Bachmann. Then Rick Santorum, then Herman Cain. (That's just preference, not preference + viability.) I don't have much of an opinion on Perry, but from what little I know, I'm not impressed.

I thought that Fox blew the debate focusing on thin crust or deep crust rather than policies and specifics. Wallace and York demonstrated themselves to be mickey mouse journalists. Sad.
Huntsman demonstrated why he'd make a great democrat presidential candidate. Misrepresented himself, slick, came across as less than trustworthy. From what I know of him he is probably a great businessman and would make a great friend but unfortunately comes across as just another politician.
Cain performed well and hit one out of the park regarding Islam by stating he opposed sharia law and swatting Wallace. Comes across as honest, straight forward, intelligent and a good speaker. Mentally agile, probably would be a good president and possibly a great one. The hostile media types couldn't trip Cain up nor snare him in a trap.
Newt came across as a polished, relaxed speaker with a mastery of the subjects. He deftly answered all questions and undoubtly is capable. Newt was the brightest and probably best informed of the candidates. Subjected to some inane gottcha questions he decked Wallace and got the biggest applause of the night. He probably was the best performer. But Newt also comes across as Elmer Gantry. Spouting a conservative line while supporting global warming, cap and trade, amnesty and partying with Pelosi and Reid. His high point was his comments on the Super Congress were simply brillant
Pawlenty demonstrated why he is a little man. He resorted to the kind of tactics that were typical of Anthony Weiner. His performance was abysmal and he was bitch slapped by Bachman on several occassions. I believe he knows he is a dead man walking and was trying for the for VP spot with Romney. His candidacy died on the stage.
Santorum did well but he needed to perform brillantly to sustain his candidacy. He has passion, intelligence, is mentaly agile. All his answers were clear, concise and seemingly honest.
Romney contradicted himself throughout the debate. He lied regarding his record. His answer regarding Romneycare were dishonest. The mediators handled him with kid gloves. A man who could compel state residents to buy something they do not wish to is not to be believed when he tells you he believes in the 10th amendment. His answers were half truths, distortions of his record, as a businessman and as gov. If anything Romney's perfomance is probably moving Perry and Palin closer to declaring. His answers brought to mind Obama campaign speeches, light, fluffy, full of hope and change, magic beans and pixie dust.
Bachman came across as forthright, honest and what you see is what you get. She avoided the traps laid for her especially an especially cheap shot by York regarding marriage. She was the champion of small government and conservatives. Not the best speaker but one of the most believable. Answered in a knowledgeable, if not brillant manner. Excellent performer, Boosted her chances.
Ron Paul. What is there to say? He is by far the most entertaining of the candidates. He is your uncle whose relationship with you is kept a closely held secret lest his antics and outrageous behavior at a marriage reception humiliate you and all your family. He never disappoints. Its like watching a train wreck.
He is a split personality. On economic issues he sounds well informed and very intelligent but the moment he discusses foreign policy he sounds like a sophomore at Yale University spouting the most uninformed and incoherent observations one can imagine a drunken Anthony Weiner shouting at a Toga Party from dimly remembered bumper sticker slogans. In short he demonstrated education, wisdom, justice, and even sanity aren't required to be a member of Congress or run for the office of President. Apparently Paul believes a nuclear armed Iran is normal and to be desired. If you wonder why British cities are being burned and looted listen to the Ronulians in the crowd.
I do not understand why so much time was wasted on marginal issues. The candidates who did well are obvious. The losers were also obvious.

Pawlenty should have been nicer to Bachmann. She's mopping the floor with him. about an hour agoLeave it to the lady to put the knife in Pawlenty. about an hour agoif that were a reality show, Pawlenty would have been asked to leave the island. about an hour agoThe other candidates should be asked to commit to getting Newt a job in private sector. about 2 hours agoWatching the beginning of debate I missed (while @JohnnyDon'tLike was sobering up) and Bachmann CRUSHED Pawlenty. about 2 hours ago
Seems about right. Maybe it seemed like a good idea at the time, but Pawlenty really screwed up by trying to go after Bachmann and failing so badly. She got distracted by him and Santorum to a degree, but this won't hurt her anywhere nearly as badly as it'll hurt them.

"Sarah's so wonderful! I hope she does run! She's my best friend!"
Way to go, ladies. <smooches>

I was actually starting to enjoy Ron Paul for the first time in a while, merely because he was the only candidate up there who wasn't obviously trying to pander to everybody...and then he has to go into this Iran shit.
I know it's late. I know nobody's probably even reading this now, but:
We did not install the Shah. The Shahs had ruled Iran for centuries and the then current one was already in power. We did help him depose his prime minister, which was certainly undemocratic, though it should be pointed out that under Iranian law at the time, he had the right to do so.
As far as comparisons to China and India. Ahmadinejad has said multiple times as bluntly as possible that he intends to attack the U.S., not just Israel, though he's certainly said that too. Yeah, I know it's the mullahs who are in charge of foreign policy, but if a person in the Obama administration constantly said we intended to nuke France, and we didn't, I'm pretty sure Obama would sack that guy. The mullahs actively supported him throughout those statements. That tells you where their intentions lie.
The Iranians also are refining uranium to an extent that's unnecessary if it were merely going to be used for energy production.
If you are not familiar with these points, you should not be commenting on this topic. If you're going to state a position while being ignorant of this, you don't have a clue what you're talking about and Paul has been talking about this topic for more than enough time to get a clue.

Yeah I called bullshit on that earlier during the live broadcast. His full looney came out on that stuff.

The fact he tossed aside orthodoxy due to marriage points to a lack of core beliefs... and THAT is why his Mormonism matters.

IMHO, all religions bring forth some pretty odd things their adherents are supposed to believe. That's why they're based on faith, not on logic. I guess we can each set up a sliding scale of which religions seem the craziest, but what's the point? The point is how the followers of any given religion behave toward others. The rest is between them and God. On that score, Mormons fare rather well.
I want to correct one thing. Mitt was born and bred a Mormon. He didn't convert for his marriage.
