Cowboy Cherry Blossom Festival Threatened by Government Shutdown
— Dave in Texas

I'm beginning to think Harry Reid is running out of scary political rhetoric.

Well everyone understands the gravity of the situation now. Cherry blossoms are about to be furloughed on Monday.

Funny, whenever I think of AndrewR's poem I think of Harry Reid. And then I don't think I really feel like eating dinner anymore.

6 Four things about a possible deal:

(1) Both sides would have to completely agree
(2) The deal would have to survive a House Conference meeting
(3) It would not be voted-upon until later this weekend so they'd have to pass a CR tonight
(4) As Majority Whip, McCarthy would have to retain those 218 votes

9 Harry (the magnificent, lord of the rift, defender of the faithful, the blood of the prophet runs in him and he is but a servant of his will) today said that he was well aware that abortion cannot be funded by taxpayer dollars, and that therefore, PP did abortions as a "loss leader".

That got me to thinking.  PP itself claims to do 330,000 abortions a year.  According to Google, the average cost of an abortion is about $500 (actually seems low to me).  That means that PP eats a cool $165M a year doing abortions.  Now either they have the single greatest private fundraiser in the history of the western world or they, and Harry, are full of crap.  Hmmmm.  I wonder which?

Really, Nevada? As weak a candidate as Sharron Angle was, you honestly picked Dingy Harry over her?

I remember listening to Beck the day after the elections, and in between the hilarious gloating, Beck was surprised that Reid won by as much as he did. Pat Gray said it was because he was a Mormon, even if he was a bad one, and that Mormons in Nevada probably voted for him just because of that. He and Beck debated that for a while.

I'm interested in that part of Beck's personality. I'm not close friends with any Latter-Day Saints, but I enjoy listening to him and Pat debate stuff like that because I know Mormons can be very protective of their faith, just like everyone else.

104 Ooops - someone hit the post button a bit early...

Rep. Jeb Hensarling, top House GOP leader, just said a few minutes ago that there is no budget deal to avert a government shutdown.

But a press release was just posted on the website of Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., saying that there is agreement between the House and Senate to pass a three-day budget that would avert a government shutdown.

There's still no official word from the White House or a congressional negotiator about the state of play. The federal government will close its doors at midnight if a deal on a budget is not reached.

The text of Johanns' news release is posted after the jump.

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) issued the following statement regarding the three-day budget agreement reached by bipartisan negotiators in the Senate and House of Representatives that prevents a shutdown of the federal government:

The American people sent us to Washington to lead our government back onto a path of fiscal sustainability, not grind it to a halt. I'm pleased both sides of the aisle were able to reach an agreement and avoid a government shutdown. I hope the same spirit is applied through next week as we debate the continued funding of our government.

We mustn't lose sight of the fact that we were faced with the prospect of a shutdown principally because no budget was passed out of Congress or ever considered on the Senate floor throughout all of last year, and we are now picking up the pieces. We are here to work together to solve our country's problems, and negotiators must do better than the performance this week. In the near future we are going to have to make tough decisions to address major problems, which will entail confronting bloated deficits and entitlement reform. I will continue to urge my colleagues to come together to develop a clear, comprehensive approach to bringing our country back from the brink of a financial crisis."

You do understand we weren't going to get everything we wanted on this budget, right?  That we only control the House and not the Senate or White House?

We're passing *last year's budget*.  Technically we're getting this instead of a budget from Obama and a Dem-controlled House and Senate.

I'd love to get a trillion dollars in cuts too but that's not realistic.  Whatever the actual deal is, it doesn't matter because the win is that the budget is a big issue now and that will continue into 2012.  That's good for us if we ever want to make the meaningful changes we need to make.

I don't like planned parenthood anymore than anyone else but you aren't going to get rid of them through the budget unless we have the senate and the whitehouse. They have too big a lobby and the abortion industry donates too much to dems. Plus dems like to kill the babies of poor people.

The way to get rid of them is an audit followed by congressional hearings that show they are a scam operataion and basically an abortion mill.

In other words you need to out them for the shady fuckers they are and put that in front of the American people.

A lot of things that have been funded "for a long time" have got to be re-examined and cut.  This is the new reality .  We simply CANNOT afford to spend the money when we are running a 1.6 TRILLION dollar deficit.

This reality really hasn't hit most people, but it will be the underlying cause for rising inflation and the general impoverishment of most of the people in this country.

Because of this immense deficit, and those in the years to come if this idiocy isn't stopped, all our savings, investments, the value of our homes, EVERYTHING, will be ruined.

'Cause Planned Parenthood and the AARP didn't get their subsidy.

Idiots.

This message has to be hammered home again and again.  The Democrats have to be portrayed as what they are, the enemies of the Middle Class and every American that is trying to make a decent life for themselves.
