Allan West is probably the first Republican I have seen in years that speaks with the voice of Ronald Reagan. He has a lot of TR in him, too. He needs some more time on the political stage before he should consider running for President, though. But I would walkover broken glass for him.
Mitch Daniels could be an effective President. He understands the task at hand probably better than anyone else running. Mitch Daniels = Calvin Coolidge
Mitt Romney = Wendell Wilkie. He can't win
Donald Trump = Donald Duck. Much sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Sarah Palin = Peter Pan. I really don't think that she will ever grow up.
Ron Paul = Jerry Lewis. The French thought Jerry was a comedic genius. The Paul loyalists think Ron is.......

I don't mean to hijack your post, but this is just too fucking hilarious especially coming from a corrupt douche bag who "earned" $18.5 million in two years, just after working in Clintoon's WH and just before being appointed by the Chicago machine winning his congressional seat, as a "banking executive", a position for which he had no credentials or background.
Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said Saturday that tackling Chicago's reputation for sweetheart deals and patronage head-on is first on his to-do list if he's elected to be the city's next mayor.

Rogers caught Beohner cheating on a sadtrap shot once, so Boehner owed him.
Seriously, who knows. It was probably one of those "ranking memeber" dealios, and Big John probably though it was a bridge too far to pull him out for a younger member. He went to that well several times in organizing committees already. If the Republicans hold onto the House in 2012, he may get a chance to get rid of some of the weak sisters that are committee chairmen now.

I've been reading all these D.C. grapevine articles, and the amount of trouble this man has caused is terrible. He, his buddy Rep. Latham, and a few other Appropriation members were the ones having their arms twisted the other night and Rogers had already been quoted mid-week saying the cuts would hurt urban districts. Now Latham is out there snarling that everyone in-favor will be sorry. Why are they both still on this committee?

The "Birchers" that this person is speaking of refers to the "John Birch Society", founded in the aftermath of the fall of China in 1949 to the Reds, in the name of John Birch, an American missionary murdered by the Red Chinese partisans after the end of WWII. Birch sometimes worked for the Nationalist Chinese, and for that he earned execution by the Reds.
The John Birch society were arch anti-communists, sometimes too "arch" for polite society, like the William F. Buckley branch of conservatism.. Buckley worked hard to get conservative ideas into the main stream to fight the statist mouth wash of the FDR years, and the Birchers could be embarrassing at times with their uncompromising attitudes. They saw commies everywhere.
The closest I can think of any "Birchers" at CPAC was Phylis Schlafly, who is freaking ancient now, but is an old Cold Warrior and was an ardent anti-LBJ person from the '60's. Schlafly founded the "Eagle Forum", which is pretty conservative, socially and fiscally.

For all the talk going back and forth over GOProud, I'm amazed this hasn't caused more of a controversy...or really any sort of controversy. This is the same group that was behind the fluoridation/conspiracy business. This is the same group whose founder implied Eisenhower was a traitor who had sold out to communists.
Ideological disputes are one thing--If your name becomes linked with the John Birch Society, though, you do not get taken seriously from that point on. By anybody.

A lot has come out in the last 20 years that vindicates some of the more outspoken "anti-communist" statements of the 50's and 60's (Alger Hiss was just about what they said he was). But you have to remember that WWII was just over in the 50's (and that war was a pretty big effin' deal), Stalin and the USSR had been our allies. Sure, the Iron Curtain had fallen, but a lot of people were in denial about just how big and bad the Soviets were. "Better Red thatn dead!" was spoken of from time to time.
Even now, a lot of younger people have no friggin' idea just what the USSR was all about, let along Stalin. "Bloodlands" is the newest definitive book on the subject, but there is lots more.
So I think Buckley was more eager about fighting to get a foothold against 25 years of FDR socialism than shout "commie" every time a stoplight turned red (that's an exageration). The 50's were full of anti-Red movies (I think I watched them all growing up), and then with the "New Frontier" of the 60's, they sorta went away.
By '64, LBJ tried to run an add making Goldwater into some stark-raving nuclear madman (the "Daisy" add). So whether the Birchers were right or wrong, they made a lot of serious conservatives of that era uncomfortable because they kept bringing up uncomfortable (non-PC) issues. It was a big stain to be called a "Bircher" at one time. Pretty pathetic when you think about who John Birch actually was. Actually a real 20th century Christian martyr.
We are now fighting the same kind of PC discomfort when talking about the true nature of "Islam".

There were a bunch of communists that had infiltrated further than leftists, to this day, want to admit. Nixon was right to go after Alger Hiss. McCarthy, initially, was right in many of his attacks (he crossed the line when he started tossing out innuendo about George C. Marshall). The Birchers took it to a level that really wasn't supported, then or now. The founder implied Eisenhower was part of the conspiracy. He said that the war in Vietnam was a communist plot to take over the United States. He advocated the Illuminati conspiracy theory. Yes, there were way more communists in the U.S. than the left has admitted, does admit, or will admit, but this really is not a group you want to associate with.

Actually....
In order to give life to [conservatism], Buckley specifically chose to rid its ranks of people who espoused the sort of anti-Semitism that once was inescapable on the American right.
Buckley would himself acknowledge that prejudice was a presence in his own home growing up. And as a youngster, Buckley admitted that he was a fan of Charles Lindbergh and his "America First" movement, whose flirtation with anti-Semitism was of a piece with its advocacy of appeasement of Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany.
But as National Review took flight in the late 1950s, anti-Semitic writers found themselves on the outside looking in. So, too, did apologists for the extremist John Birch Society.
But despite the fact that his conservatism was one that was informed by his own Catholic faith (something that was consistently made clear in the pages of National Review), Buckley made his journal, and by extension, the movement for which it served as an unofficial bible, off-limits to the anti-Semitism that was commonplace in the world in which he grew up.
Though he didn't always agree with all of its policies, Buckley was also a consistent supporter of Israel. A staunch anti-Communist, he was also deeply supportive of the movement to free Soviet Jewry at a time when many in this country (including some Jews) were loath to speak out because it might be interpreted as opposition to a policy of detente with Moscow.
Long after he chased the Birchers out of NR, Buckley found himself forced to confront the issue again. When longtime colleagues Pat Buchanan and Joseph Sobran used their bully pulpits on the right to bash Israel and stigmatize Jews for their support for the state, it was again Buckley who took on the haters.
Buckley repudiated Sobran's writing, which he labeled anti-Semitic, and pushed him off the magazine's masthead.
As the issue continued to percolate in the aftermath of the Persian Gulf war in December 1991, he devoted an entire issue of the magazine to an essay titled "In Search of Anti-Semitism" (which was also the title of the book he later published on the same subject), in which he took on Buchanan, who was preparing an insurgent run for the White House against the first President Bush.
His conclusion was damning: "I find it impossible to defend Pat Buchanan against the charge that what he did and said during the period under examination amounted to anti-Semitism, whatever it was that drove him to say and do it," Buckley wrote.
Though Buchanan would continue to snipe away on television, it was largely Buckley's doing that he and others like him would do so from outside a perch in one of our two major parties rather than inside it.

I'm not trolling or splashing mud. I've been a regular AoS moron for years but generally don't comment much any more.
I was referring to the JBS, and their sponsorship and booths at CPAC (last year as well, when Ron Paul also won the straw poll). John McManus and his ilk are the ones who support Ron Paul and objected to Rumsfeld's award at CPAC. While JBS may be right about some things on the surface, many of its members are antisemites and conspiracy theorists. It is because of this kind of membership, that association with such jeopardizes the foundation of conservatism.
Posted by: ConservativeBelle at February 13, 2011 02:27 AM (4B2+U)

Schlafly also single-handedly killed the Equal Rights Amendment, and wrote "A Choice, Not an Echo" that got the Goldwater campaign rolling. She's a key figure in post-WW2 politics, and one who doesn't get nearly enough respect.
