Crossroads GPS Runs Hard-Hitting Ad
— Ace

I just saw this ad by Crossroads GPS on Fox.

It's Daisy-like in featuring a child in great danger at the end.

This one by American Crossroads (which is a different company) isn't as good, and I haven't seen it on tv, but it's kind of funny, for partisans.

I don't think these cute and funny/ironic ads work as well as the straight pitch (like the one above).

8 I keep coming back to a statistical argument:  I'm 50, if no changes are made, I can collect full SS and medicare at 65.  That will be in 2026.  I have a life expectancy of about 73 years, and probably less considering the ages of my father and grandfathers when they died.

So I'll support the policy of kicking the can down the road until a few years after I'm dead.  Probably the best I can hope for.

OK, Ace. You're a guy with some semblance of aesthetic sense, who can pretty much tell the difference between shit and crap, and you think that's OK? If I had a "destroy the universe" button, I'd have pushed it about five seconds into that ad, because the thought of cohabiting the cosmos with it, the people who made it, and anyone who thinks it's not shit was too terrible to endure.

The problem with the second ad it that it's almost 2 minutes long.

The problem with both ads is that hardly anyone is going to see them.

Most people are like sports fans when it comes to public policy. They pick a team and get behind it. At the same time, they pull for bad things to befall their team's rival. Red Sox fans will cheer for the Red Sox, no matter what they do or how they do it. They also root against the Yankees. Democrats want to see our country win wars if winning helps the Democrats. They'll have us lose wars if that hurts the Republicans. It doesn't matter what's at stake. Most people still don't care and won't care, except inasmuch as it helps or hurts their team.

Posted by: someguy at July 27, 2011 03:02 PM (iIQ0a)

79 The problem with the second ad isn't the tone, it's the fact that the clips of Obama that immediately follow the "2-1/2 YEARS LATER" title card don't adequately capture his divisiveness and his absence of leadership.  A few "the Republicans are holding a gun to our heads" clips would have been a far better contrast to the preceding "togetherness" clips, and a couple of petulant whines about being expected to put forward his own plan (or Carney saying "do you need something written down?" or others asking where Obama's leadership is) would have illustrated the lack of leadership theme.  The "I've been here" sequence of him goofing off would then have had more impact.

Which drives those of us who actually give a damn about consequences completely, utterly, inappropriate- relationship- with- a- member- of- the- phylum- Arthropoda- out of our fool minds.

Yep.

Imagine yourself in a social setting in 2003 with the invasion of Iraq imminent and hearing "My biggest concern is that it will go well and Bush will come out smelling like a rose." No kidding. How do you talk to that person after that? About anything? More actual anedotes:

"Nice day for this time of winter." >> "I don't ever remember it being this warm in the winter. If you ever needed proof of global warming ... "

"Who do you want in the World Series?" >> "Detroit, because the poor people in Detroit haven't had anything to cheer about in so long." This led into a tirade about the imbicile in the White House. I didn't mention that Detroit recently hosted half of the Stanley Cup Final (which Detroit won), half of the the NBA Finals (which Detroit won) and the Super Bowl. Those are just facts, and facts are for people who don't read The New York Times.

I'm beginning to see signs that they are cracking, especially at the recent presser.  The key to a good symbiotic relationship is that both sides benefit, not that one side benefits and the other side constantly has its nose rubbed in poop.  That presser was a shot across the bow.

109 #75 Mr. Harrison,

the republican plan doesn't actually reduce spending.  All it does is reduce the rate of increase in spending.

I will say it again.  All the republican plan does is reduce the rate of increase in spending.

I don't know where you are from, but that isn't a cut in spending, except in Washington.   That is the beauty of base line budgeting.  You see, next year's base line, as calculated by the CBO includes an automatic increase over this years budget.

I'm getting the feeling that no one likes the kick the can plan, but that is, in effect, what is being proposed.  When you are broke, borrowing money for a steak dinner, instead of lobster, isn't really helping your overall financial situation.

The ads I'd like to see are the ones that trash both parties. I'd like to see a non-nuts version of Ross Perot or Jesse Ventura or Donald Trump point to our current economic woes and say "It's doesn't take an economist to recognize a mess, and this is a mess. The Democrats caused this mess; here's the proof. The Republicans knew what was coming for years and didn't do anything about it. Vote out the party that did worse. If they're both unacceptable, then vote against both."

121 #107 Mr. North,

Ladies and Gentlemen will not, and the rest of the morons must not make fun of Michelle Obama in any way.

I did something similar to what you are proposing,( quite tastefully tongue in cheek I thought), and Ace not only banned me from AoS, he also banned me from Confederate Yankee, The Jawa Report and Protein Wisdom.  (It's because of the domain, mu.nu.)

I will say that I've learned my lesson, and that I don't like having to go outside to get access to my neighbor's wireless network, either.  No matter how funny or apt your comment regarding Michelle Obama might be, Ace does not want his site to be brought down to the level of the Huffington Post, MSNBC or Real Time.  Or for that matter The Daily Show.

The wives and children of political opponents are strictly off limits.  Perhaps you might content yourself with a Tony Weiner/Boehner riff, or failing that remind everyone that Hillary Clinton thinks that Assad is a reformer.

may i add my .02$ ?

My ex was an ad guy. And an editor. And the guy who didn everything for Ahnuld's campaigns.  yeah blame him, evil eveil man for making that creep look plausible to you all. Ok  I have some observations.

the ad people hate republicans.

My ex's boss was one of the 5 republicans in an 8 storey building full of ad people. He owned the business but theres a lotta ways to screw things up in production. Has it ever occurred to the republicans that they cant just "Hire the BEST AD GUYS? " they will fuck you over subtly if they hate you.

And they hate us.

Now it could just be that i finally cleaned out a closet full of his shit today that i will get into this but they dont mind taking your money and not giving you what you need, but giving you what you want, and asked for, in a way that wont work, but leaves the client happy.

they can do that as ad people they know how to sell product.

Unless they can get ad people who are DEVOTED and talented at every level of production, to take on the Campaign projects you will get screwed EVER DAMN TIME in production.

They loves them some obama. THEY HATE US. And at least one hates us very super alot because anything conservative reminds him of his ex wife who is worse than satan loved her horse more than him and RUINED HIS LIFE (by getting all fucked up and depressed about him wanting to be a polygamist or something.) Insert Father who divorced mom, Parents who wont accept gayness, family who never liked shiksa wife, etc.... the list goes on forever but they have millions of reasons to hate us, but for each person in NY, Hollywood, or SF we have few allies and many many people looking to stab us in the back or strangle a good idea in the cradle.

My other theory is that the dems have something on almost every repub in politics and they are blackmailing them. This is why they act scared to open their mouths in any effective way.

your mileage may vary but i know what i have seen from my own close up view of politics and campaign ads in Hollywood. You gotta have a friend on the Inside. Ahnuld's was Shriver.
