Top Story
- AMD's new Epyc Milan is the fastest CPU in the world - for Cinebench, anyway. Can Intel's new Ice Lake processors catch up? (Tom's Hardware)
If by that you mean, can two Ice Lake CPUs narrowly beat one AMD CPU while using twice the power and costing four times as much, then yes.
Tech News
- Was looking for a second main server to pair with the current main server. Found one last night that fit the requirements but cost a bit more than I wanted to spend. Went back this morning after deciding that it was probably worth the price and it's gone.
Eh.
Meanwhile, trying out Amazon's cold storage for backups. At 1.5¢ per GB it's as cheap as you'll find anywhere and seems to work okay at my day job. The question is, can a cheap little t2.micro server copy with the stress of rsync and ZFS, or is it going to throttle me to death?
- AMD's Van Gogh processors are aimed squarely at the low end of the laptop market. (WCCFTech)
These have Zen 2 cores - last year's version - and latest generation RDNA 2 graphics. The Cezanne parts for mid-to-high-end laptops have current model Zen 3 CPU cores but older Vega graphics. I'm guessing this is because there hasn't been time yet for the separate CPU and graphics teams at AMD to bring their latest designs together.
- Renaming the nanometers. (EEJournal)
Not the SI unit of length itself, but how we talk about new semiconductor process nodes. Apple's M1 Arm chip is built on TSMC's latest 5nm node, but that's all marketing. Nothing about the 5nm node is actually 5nm. The names for new process nodes haven't matched the physical measurements for twenty years.
Which is good in a way, because if the chips were really built at a scale of 5nm they wouldn't work due to quantum effects. Because it's just marketing nonsense, they expect to get down to around 1.2nm before the chips start to fail.
- An Nginx cheat sheet. (Hashnode)
For when you have to set up a proxy server in fifteen minutes at 2AM.
What? That's never happened to you? How odd. Happens to me at least once a month.
Needs to add caching though.
- Even Wordpress is automatically disabling Google FLoC. (Bleeping Computer)
This turkey is getting deader by the day. It's wonderful to see an industry come together for a moment over something that stinks so bad that no-one can bear to go near it.
- Death by stupidity. (Click2Houston)
No-one was driving the car, officials say.
How could that possibly have turned out badly?
- Even a dead squirrel can get hit on the head by an acorn: China and Huawei are proposing a redesign of the internet to go with 6G mobile networks. (Just Security)
And when they say redesign they mean taking Orwell's nightmares and seasoning them with Kafka's fever dreams. And they're working with the UN - specifically the International Telecommunications Union - to bring this dystopian digital concentration camp to reality.
Problem for them is that the ITU has no say whatsoever about how the internet is run. That's up to the IETF, which views the ITU with the same friendly camaraderie as a seagull with half a chicken nugget views another seagull.
I can't recommend that site generally - in fact some of their content is mind-meltingly stupid - but they got this one right.

I'm not complaining or anything, I'm just confused and disconnected from them. It reminds me as kind of a mix of Speed Racer version 3.0, but different characters every show. There don't seem to be any real characters consistent through multiple videos, but maybe I just haven't paid attention and there are some Anime superstars, IDK. But no regular character-types like I grew up with, like James Bond, or Magnum, P.I. or Batman, or Tonto or Rachel and Monica from Friends. They just seem to be anonymous characters with no beginning or end, just here for a 3 minute gig, and then off to the next one starring some other non-descript, perfect looking characters.
I have noticed, for no particular reason, that some pron has Anime videos, too. I clicked one on once, and clicked away after less than a minute, because it didn't even register as pron, just caricature drawings of perfectly drawn, non-descript people, doing pron stuff. Weird.
Is this what the kids enjoy these days? Am I missing something? Isn't art supposed to inspire and perk up emotions and imagination? I get none of that from Anime. Just some visuals that are choreographed to some cover of a knows song. I wonder what my senior HS English teacher would say. She was brilliant at bringing out meanings of characters in major literature like Shakespeare or a book of the day, (well a couple of decades later), like To Kill a Mockingbird. To me, AMV's are the anthesis. Heck, the old MTV videos has little mini-stories in them, quite often.
If it could be related, I never got The Office, either. Little LCD can quote from it, the last show I remember doing that from was Seinfeld.

Actually, the more diverse, the better. I watched all 3 Anime videos, which is about 5,000% more than in my life up to now. No complaints. New stuff is how we grow our brains and our outlooks on life.
Turtles videos. yeah. We all just want to be Happy Together. And what a great song to play over the loudspeakers in Minneapolis after the verdict is announced and the riots begin anew. It would be the greatest scene since the closing scene in Animal House.

"Good enough" is what killed American competitive advantage.

They produce twenty to thirty new shows each season - as in, four times a year - and quite often it's one season and done. Tell the story and move on to the next story.
Because it's animated there's little in the way of star power - nobody watches a show just because a certain actor is voicing a character in it. Every new show sinks or swims on its own merits.
It still produces classics, though, like Dirty Pair - the two girls in the topmost video. That is over 30 years old and still holds up well today. But you need a guide to what's worth watching because there's an awful lot that ain't.

Inciting a riot arrests are up to the DoJ to charge the criminal, so, in a word, no.
But as far as how the laws of our country read, it looks like classic intent to start a riot. With videos and crowds. Compare Maxine to the hundreds of people that have been harassed and arrested by the FIB for peacefully organizing in DC on Jan 6, minus the few hundred that went into the building and blew all credibility for the other nearly million that attended.
Maxine is inciting them to go burn things down. If they do (and they will), Maxine should then most definitely be arrested. But see my first sentence.
Perfect illustration of how far the Rule of Law has fallen, even in the last couple of decades.

Not gonna dispute the advantages, but there are also hidden minuses. If you look at comment counts since the fire, my anecdotal observation seems like the average comment count has gone way down on the ONT for example. So there are some issues people are having. Whether these are merely preference or actual problems people are having accessing and commenting in the new format, I dunno.-another point: It seems like there are issues that the cobs and ace are having posting. Again, whether this is system related or just changes people could become accustomed to, I dunno.
-I did like the ease of commenting (without captcha) and being able to quote a comment and have it look all right format wise, but that is MY personal preference.
-I will admit, I miss the history of the blog down the sidebar. It is like a time capsule or going home. The blog roll is a time capsule to a saner era. Or a graveyard, if you want to get morbid. But graveyards ARE useful and serve a societal function.
-I can get work anything, so if the cobs and ace prefer it this way I am fine. If they want to go back to the old way, I am fine with that too.

I think "fixing" the old site is harder than tweaking this one and retraining the COBs and Ace on posting in all likelihood.
Sometimes you take code to the limit and it just can't be salvaged without falling prey to the sunk cost fallacy. This system probably has a provable time-cost-management advantage going forward. The crew will do what it will do, and I will adapt to it.

My last intel based PC had random hard BLACK SOD's when doing utterly non-intensive things like surfing the internet or using word. I swapped the mobo, ram, hdds, video card, psu, even keyboard and mouse. Kept doing it. Bought an AMD board and a Ryzen, it all magically ceased immediately. Not going back. Intel is dead.

Love the tech. Love the anime. Keep it coming.
BTW, this is probably my first comment in a decade here...

A personal recent favorite is "Girls und Panzer," where girl's high schools compete in actual armored tank battles with real tanks.

Don't bother with the t2-micro, just upload it directly off your system to Glacier, even cheaper per GB cost. https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/pricing/
You can get AWS command line utilities then script out an upload and schedule it on you local system you are trying to backup.

This is in the right margin of the Monday Overnight Open Thread (4/19/21); we don't know why.
