David Mamet, Interviewed By Dennis Miller
— Ace

This must be something people are interested in, right?

Before I heard about WeinerGate, I wrote a piece on Mamet's movies, and his political conversion, which I actually intended to be most of my output that Memorial Day weekend. That didn't work out as I thought it would.

Good piece, I think. And there's some good counter-trolling in the comments, as I admit to "erg," little by little, that I am, in fact, a Time Traveler.

"I admire your cajones, baby."

Mamet's explanation of what began his process of the ideological reboot: "I finally met a conservative."

Palin fans should note that they're both fairly positive (with some criticism) of Palin. Sort of a mixed, realistic view, lean towards the positive.

Oh, and they're both going kookoobananas over Hayek's Road to Serfdom.

More Mamet? Hobbitopoly tells me Mamet will be on Limbaugh at 2pm.

Miller: Weiner a "Nasty Piece of Work:" At Breitbart.tv, natch.

Not completely O/T, since this is about The Great Conversion.

I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful young woman at a gig several weeks ago who works with a bandmate. She attended Columbia and majored in poli-sci. We had some witty banter for a few hours over beers, she's a great conversationalist, very bright and knows big words and stuff.

So I had a chance to dazzle her with my *ahem* equally brilliant intellect before the subject turned to politics. She seemed surprised to find a conservative who could challenge her. She slipped into condescention mode for all of about thirty seconds before she caught herself. I could tell that she was unprepared to find a conservative musician, much less one who knew as much or more about politics than she did. I enlightened her about a few things that she was unaware of, like the impending ban on 100 watt light bulbs.

She seemed surprised that the government would go as far as to outlaw a certain type of light bulb, even though she's all gung-ho on the environment. I also had a chance to tell her about how forests are managed for wood products, since my last job was managing a machine shop that made products for the plywood industry and I got to see their operation up close.

She's young, intelligent, and liberal. I may make it my personal quest to gently introduce her to the wonders of conservatism.

If she can be turned toward the Light Side, there is hope...

Weiner is a turd with a long history of turditude.

He was a turd when he was Rep. Schumer's aid. And Weiner grew into even a bigger turd when he ran a turdy campaign for NYC Council.

Story goes that Weiner was planning a move to FLA to make a political run  in a district such as Boca because he didn't think he get in office in NY.

But his boss Rep Schumer told him to stay and run for city council from the Bronx.

I honestly didn't ask. I usually only see her once a month at an outdoors gig. She's more a "friend of the band" than anything else and she seems willing to help us pickle our livers, since she usually buys us rounds of drinks afterwards.

I'm trying to think of other sites to suggest to get her gradually accustomed to conservative thought. I don't want to mention the Moron Horde here quite yet. I didn't even tell her about my own little blog. That information is on a need-to-know basis only as I like my anonymity.

She has a good sense of humor, but little in life can prepare one for the awsomeness that is the HQ. If I had to explain pudding or stompy boots to her, she still wouldn't understand.

OT, but could there be signs of intelligent life in Canada's high court?

Sponsors of 'rogue' immigrants to Canada must repay welfare money

"The risk of a rogue relative properly lies on the sponsor, not the taxpayer," Justice Ian Binnie wrote Friday on behalf of the court.

The court said governments have limited discretion to delay collection of defaulted payments, but not to totally forgive the debts.

"The discretion enables the governments to delay enforcement action having regard to the sponsor's circumstances and to enter into agreements respecting terms of payment, but not simply to forgive the statutory debt," wrote Binnie.

Reminds me of that Fightin' Around the world bit with South Park.

Crowe, along with all the other 'skiners, are woefully ignorant about this practice and why the Jews perform this on their male children.  Circumcision is an external sign of the bond between G-d and the Jews.  The child is not harmed and comparing circumcision to the human sacrifices that the Aztecs did is hyperbole of the highest order.

90 Listening to that interview and thinking about Ace's writing and what it is about conservatism that is appealing:  It's honesty.  It's about getting past self-bullshit.  It's about getting over Self to the extent that it's no longer about attending to primitive, tribal concerns of social rank.  I think a lot of what binds this left is that strong R-complex urge to mark territory and be seen in the proper group, the with-it crowd.  In so doing, they spend so much of their time concerned with methods of primitive display and posturing--signals to fellow in-groupers; thus, the preoccupation with group identity.  Conservatives are much less concerned with display; they're more authentic.  Like I said, honest.

Posted by: rdbrewer at June 10, 2011 10:58 AM (ocecp)

91 The Left has already begun the counter-attack against Mamet.

The New Mamet Narrative is that he's just an old Jew. That this "conversion" is nothing more than an old Jew facing his mortality and feeling all loyal to the motherland back in Israel. Maybe even a bit senile -- you know how old people get. Everything else is just mental gymnastics to get him on Team Protect Israel.

So ...

Old Mamet -- Genius left-wing playwright speaking truth to power.
New Mamet -- Just an old senile Jew getting old-man sentimental about Israel.

93 @85

A joke from the old Soviet Union tells the story of an artist who is commissioned to carve a statue of Lenin for the town square.  The statue is finished except for the head when the local commissar tells the artist: "make sure that you sculpt Comrade Lenin with a hat on his head, it is always cold in this town and we do not want to have anything that would portray him to be foolish, like not wearing a hat in the cold."  "But comrade.." the artist tries to explain and is cut off by the commissar: "You will not show the great Lenin to be a fool!  You will sculpt him with a hat on his head or it is off to the gulag with you!".  The artist relents and returns to work.

The day of the great unveiling finally arrives.  The commissar pulls the rope and the cover falls away to reveal the great, wise Lenin with a hat on his head... and another in his hand!

97 Crowe is so ridiculous.  He's so passionate that babies not be "mutilated," but in the same breath he's  passionate that they continue to be killed under whatever circumstances the mother deems convenient.

Oh, to be a liberal...

And that right there is why a lopsided number of liberals are women.

107 Democrats don't oppose circumcision because it hurts babies. They oppose it because it reduces sexual pleasure, and they like to turn on little boys by copping a feel. Look at the people opposing it: Andrew Sullivan and Bill Maher, both of whom have spoken approvingly of child molestation.

120 Mamet's purely an artist, and sees the world entirely thru the eyes thereof. Once he feels he's mined all that he could from conservative politics -- bearing in mind, of course, that his theater audiences are made up almost entirely of rich folks -- he will move on to skewering them. There's no deep thought or loyalty underlying his suggested conversion; it's like he found out all the hottest chicks are dropping trou for conservatives and at his age he could really use all of that action he can get.

122 Having Mamet come to our side is like getting Babe Ruth from the Red Sox I think it's more like Jim Carrey's story in The Truman Show.

Posted by: t-bird at June 10, 2011 11:47 AM (FcR7P)

123 The opera composer Richard Wagner had to flee his native Germany more than once due to his involvement with popular uprising and support for revolution; but then at some point he met Mad King Ludwig of Bavaria who was eager to over-bankroll any theater project Wagner could dream up no matter how crazy or expensive, and out the door forever went all Wagner's pretensions to popular revolution. Mamet needs a lot of big money to back his experiments in theater, and he knows who has lots of bucks and what kinds of views they hold on politics and stuff.
