David Wu Resigning From Congress

After the debt vote though. Because his moral leadership is so necessary or something.

Embattled U.S. Rep. David Wu will resign from the House of Representatives after being accused of making unwanted sexual advances toward a fund-raiser's daughter, he announced Tuesday.
In a statement issued by his office, the seven-term Oregon Democrat said he would step down once the current standoff between Congress and the White House over raising the U.S. debt ceiling is resolved.
"I cannot care for my family the way I wish while serving in Congress and fighting these very serious allegations," Wu said. "The well-being of my children must come before anything else."

Apparently his kids welfare comes after hitting up on a woman but tomato/tomahto.

David Wu, future Oregon congressman, and the woman later dated in their junior year. But that spring, in 1976, she broke things off. A few months later, an encounter occurred that neither wants to discuss.

That summer, the 21-year-old Wu was brought to the campus police annex after his ex-girlfriend said he tried to force her to have sex, according to Raoul K. Niemeyer, then a patrol commander who questioned him.

Wu had scratches on his face and neck, and his T-shirt was stretched out of shape, Niemeyer said.

Earlier, someone had interrupted a scuffle in the woman's dorm room. A Stanford professor said the woman told him the next day that Wu had angrily attacked her. An assistant dean who counseled the woman for two months said that the woman called it attempted rape and that Wu used a pillow to muffle her screams.

Wu told police that what happened was consensual. "He said, 'We just, I was with my girlfriend, and we just got a little carried away,' " Niemeyer remembered. After that, he said, Wu "clammed up."

When I was younger, I separately knew two women who used that character as a blueprint for their lives. I knew one through a friend who got stuck in the Doc Golightly role as she dragged him through hell. The other I knew through work, and her life was a mess of her own doing that spilled over into work and caused a shitload of turmoil for many of my coworkers. Likely these women would have been fuckups no matter what, but I'm disgusted by the glamorization of the archetype.

Effectively. I suspect the real reason he's being thrown overboard now is to avoid a divisive primary and keep the seat blue in the next election. The district is considered a safe Democratic seat, though there are enough captured rural residents Wu won the last election with 55% of the vote. Democrats and shrugged and fell in line the last time he was accused of rape in 2004, they may have decided the second incident and the tiger suit were too much to risk in a 55% district.
