— Ace 1. Social Security. Likely to be the liveliest part of the debate. Romney has claimed that Perry plans to abolish Social Security, including in fliers circulated in Florida. Romney's attack is two-pronged: 1, chase voters away from Perry on this issue itself, and 2, also put a dent in the current belief that Perry is more (or just as) electable as he is.
Perry could stand or fall depending on his response here. I imagine he may call Romney a liar to his face. In fact, I'm not sure that anything short of that would be suitably reassuring to voters who are concerned by this line of attack.
2. Immigration. Romney had intended to get to this in the last debate, but didn't. This is actually where Perry has the most vulnerability. I don't expect Romney to leave immigration off the table this time around. With the Tea Party co-hosting the debate, I doubt their questioners will forget to ask about this.
Again, this could be a do or die issue for Perry. Either he can make a strong account for himself on this issue, or suddenly the Perry boomlet might end.
3. Ron Paul! Ron Paul probably loathes Perry more than other candidates. Because of the assault and everything.
Perry made a tactical mistake in responding to one of Ron Paul's attacks last go-round. When Ron Paul brought up his letter to Hillary Clinton, telling her to not forget the farmer community when planning reforms in health care reform, Perry said briefly had had no idea what reforms Hillary would propose. And then attacked Ron Paul for writing Ronald Reagan to quit the Republican Party.
In this kind of attack, it is not enough to simply attack Ron Paul. Ron Paul is an anti-semitic neo-Bircher conspiracy theorist crank, whose actual capacity to attract support in the GOP is limited at around 10% (right where it is). But if Ron Paul successfully attacks Perry, voters may desert Perry not necessarily for Ron Paul, but for some other alternative, such as Romney or Bachmann or Gingrich (or the undeclared Palin).
Simply knocking Paul is no real defense. It doesn't accomplish Perry's goal, which is to attract supporters to his own standard.
On this particular attack, Perry could have reminded the audience -- do you remember this? -- that the Hillary Health Care Reform Panel was notoriously secret. This was a big knock on it at the time -- it was all done behind closed doors, until they unveiled their monstrosity to the public.
Perry would have been much better served by pointing this out, rather than attacking the candidate from Prison Planet.
Ron Paul will surely attack Perry more tonight. The same way that lions and dolphins are not threats to one another, Romney isn't a threat to Paul, because there's very little chance a Paul supporter would defect to Romney, or vice versa. On the other hand, Perry can at least plausibly claim to be a 10th Amendment, return-power-to-the-states libertarian, which directly threatens Paul's little niche.
Although some attacks on Paul are warranted, Perry has to make sure his first, second, and third goal here is to knock down Paul's attack. Successfully attacking Paul in return should be a bonus-damage situation only.
4. RomneyCare. With (I assume) Tea Party people supply questions, this will be Romney's greatest challenge. Romney has the benefit, however, of this particular albatross being very well known already; it's doubtful Romney could actually hurt himself on this score. Or help himself. Opinions are already formed.
But a bad soundbite from Romney -- a defense of the mandate, say -- could do some additional harm.
5. Bachmann's Attempt To Re-Join the Top Tier. Perry's entry into the race has hurt Bachmann most of all. One recent poll has her down to 4%, I just heard.
That's why she'll be eager to join Romney in the Social Security attack. But Bachmann herself called Social Security a "fraud" back in 2010. Has Perry done his homework? Does he have that reply at the ready?
6. Everyone Else. Cain is done, and Santorum never had a realistic chance, despite decent debate performances. Huntsman seems to have won some kind of reality-tv contest giving him the right to pretend to be a Republican candidate for President.
Gingrich has been showing a pulse lately, and while I really doubt he could ever join the top tier, he has been gaining credibility in the debates.

Considering her parsing when it came to Medicare reform earlier this year, I'm not really surprised she'd use this tactic as an attempt to become relevant. Though as you say, it doesn't set her apart from Romney. Is it to help her congressional career, then?

How's this for an idea, Gingrich as the running mate to whoever is the nominee. You know how Newt is a font of arcane parliamentary rules in the House? Set him up as President of the Senate and see what he does there. The VP is a glorified legislator anyway, we don't need another veep dicking around inside the executive branch. Interesting, thoughtful twist on Gingrich's role, but it still places him too close to the presidency... or, possibly, the "next in line" should the GOP run a string of good fortune. I've advocated he be senior adviser or Chief of Staff whereby his smarts could be both tapped and checked. No question I want him providing ideas and angles, though. if the bill is something like $8.07, I'll pull out a $20 bill, hand it to the cashier, who will type the amount in, then I will suddenly discover 7 cents in my pocket and hand it over - it is my test of intelligence for them, if they can figure out how to calculate the change without redoing the order or calling over the manager to reset the register, then that's a place I'll go back to again

Ever since Perry got in the race, her only possible path to relevance is to be on Romney's team, preferably as VP.
And if she wont make it onto the ticket? She just burned her whole Im-more-Tea-Partier-than-thou-stick. Very dumb, I dont think auntie Mildred would pick her. I cannot imagine them working together.

My fiancee actually watched the last debate with me. As soon as she saw and heard Huntsman, she said "he has asshole written all over his face."
The last person she said that about in an election? Barack Obama, back when she was still a Democrat deciding who to pick in the 08 primary (she went with Hillary, and part of her break with the party was over the ridiculous fawning Zero got at the expense of Shrillary.)

Heh. My generator only runs on gas I think, but I'll have to ask the mister to be sure. But remember, you can only store gasoline so long (w/out stabilizer), and storing gasoline is dicey unless you have a safe way/place to do it. Just got a rain barrel a couple weeks ago. Wish I would've had one lots sooner, even if it was just to water the plants with non-chlorinated water. No dirt bikes here, but I ride the old-fashioned one wherever I can to burn calories and save $$ on gas.

2. I don't think Perry is mr. conservative. I've bashed his debate performance, his illegal immigration stances, and that whole forcing vaccines on girls though i've re-thunk my opposition the last one. I also defended Romney from claims he would be Obama 2.0, claims he'd lose to Obama, and other things. In fact Romney is my #2 behind Perry right now.
So no I'm not the bot you want to claim me to be and name calling all goes back to the clown who did it first

For all practical purposes, the field is set and the top tier consists of Romney and Perry. Romney is a known entity; if he's not to one's liking, there's only one other choice in terms of an electable candidate with a good shot at winning the nomination.
All the candidates (Perry included) have flaws. There's no point in waiting for the Perfect Candidate to enter the race before backing one of the current candidates, because such a person does not exist and there's little chance that anyone capable of winning is going to enter the race this late.

LOL.
This is the exact opposite of reality. It's too wrong to be an accident. Why aim to mislead?
"On balance, I don't think he's any more conservative than Romney, though I think there's a chance he could be a more conservative president simply becuase he will owe us. Romney not so much."
Their agendas are nearly identical. Their records are complete opposites. Perry is a tax cutting spending cutting low drama administrator. He's walked that walk for a long time.
He is not pure. He's wrong on a few issues. But he's conservative on fiscal policy and entitlement reform. That's not lip service. He doesn't go over the top against Obamacare just to mask his own mandate... he really aims to fix this stuff.
You're right to manage your expectations, though. Perry will not please everyone all of the time, even on the right. I'm sure of that.

I couldn't believe how bad Perry and Romney were. They were lame trying to defend their positions on healthcare and immigration. They sounded unprofessional and unprepared.
Ron Paul was actually booed. Social Security highlighted why the other candidates are far more sound than either Perry or Romney, though at least Perry had the courage to call it a Ponzi scheme. Romney demonstrated he doesn't understand taxes nor how industry fnctions offering more of the same old, same old.
Cain showed he had imagination. Something that scares people who like country clubs. Bachman gave concise and reassuring answers.
I don't understand how anyone could support Perry or Romney. But then again you'd have to ask Ace why he supported McCain and continues to push individuals as unqualified and uninspiring as Perry and Romney.
