— Ace Down, down, down.
Following another week of weak economic data, we have cut our estimates for real GDP growth in the second and third quarter of 2011 to 1.5% and 2.5%, respectively, from 2% and 3.25%. Our forecasts for Q4 and 2012 are under review, but even excluding any further changes we now expect the unemployment rate to come down only modestly to 8¾% at the end of 2012.[Discussion of short-term, temporary factors, such as auto supply disruptions due to the Japan Nuke Disaster, omitted; report notes that failing economy cannot be explained entirely by such temporary factors]
...final demand growth has slowed to a pace that is typically only seen in recessions.... Moreover, if the economy returns to recession—not our forecast, but clearly a possibility given the recent numbers …
Obama's obvious play here is to claim the economy was growing, until... those wicked Republicans took over the House in January 2010, and then they undid all his terrific work.
It's obvious, but I don't think many are going to buy that jazz. Obama promised some strong growth in 2011, for example:
Starting in 2011, with Obamanomics fully in gear and the recession over, growth would take off. GDP would rise 4.3 percent in 2011, followed by Â… 4.3 percent growth in 2012 and 2013, too! And 2014? Another year of 4.0 percent growth. Off to the races, America.
But I don't see what else they can say.

It's only a surprise to people who truly believe Obama's prattle.
The negative trends will move slightly downwar going into the election. But that is inevitable because we are pretty close to bottom. Obama will claim things are headed in the right direction, to try and gain your vote.
But. what he has done is economically disastrous. Do you want four more years of this?
Posted by: Marcus at July 16, 2011 05:41 AM (aqKGQ)
If the economy sucks, inflation is way up, and tons of people are still out of work, they will, rightly or wrongly, blame the most visible member of the government, the only one they are familiar with, the president. These dipshits believe that the president calls all the shots. Clinton had a great economy not because of Congress, but because he was some economic genius. The last two years of Bush were an economic disaster not because of Nanzi Pelosi and commiecrew taking over Congress, but because Bush ruined it.
Obama can bitch and moan about Republicans all he wants. Those brilliant independents will blame him if things are bad, and praise him if things get better. That's really all it will come down to.

More evidence that Moody's and S&P talk of downgrade is nothing more than political posturing
The actual people who matter are taking all this BS in stride. As some of us said, the actual rating of the bonds has already taken into account the BS going on in Washington.
However there's this:
Could it be that the MFM has been playing fast and lose with what Moody's actually said?
Maybe we have been to harsh with MoodyÂ’s and the MFM has been lying to us.

Mornin', morons, one and all.
I have to tell y'all about a conversation I had with one of my musician friends at last nights' gig. During our first break, we were standing outside the venue and we started discussing the news of the day, the budget battle. My friend, with whom I've never discussed politics before, started to rail against "big business" when I asked him about The Vapid One's® rather cozy relationship with GE's Immelt.
He had no response to that one. He's a big lib, as are most of my music friends, but he also fancies himself as a history buff.
He then proceeded to denigrate capitalism, and all its' supposed evils and how it's responsible for all the world's ills, citing in the process all the tired talking points of the left. He's a stock trader (although not a day trader, so he said). Then he started talking about how banks were packaging their shitty loans in order to make money from the worthless loans they had.
It was when he said that all these big, evil corporations weren't regulated that I interrupted him by pointing out one very big inconvenient truth: all of these big companies are following the law and that they are indeed very heavily regulated.
That's when he started sputtering. Every time he pointed out something that the big, evil corporations were doing, I gently reminded him that all they were doing was adhering to federal regulation. That's why they all have platoons of lawyers. He sputtered some more, and trotted out a few more lefty talking points, but he knew he'd lost the debate. I could see it in his eyes.
I should point out that alcohol may have been involved. Just a bit, though.
While it wasn't quite as much fun as punching a hippie, it was still very satisfying to politely confront his world view. At the end of the conversation, he was almost apologetic for his reaction to me bending him over the rhetorical barrel, which I did with as much tact and diplomacy as a Moron can muster, which was actually quite a bit. I didn't want to piss him off, but he almost lost it on several occasions. I could tell I got the better of the debate.
I'm just not going to sit by and let lefty talking points pass by any more. He started it, and by the end, he knew he'd lost. He is a smart fella, no doubt about that, but now he's a bit less sure of himself and his rather leftist world view today.
Mission accomplished.

Raising taxes isn't about revenue. Nope: Fairness.
Remember when President Obama was a U.S. Senator talking about how raising taxes is about “fairness?” We do. In the following clip, Charlie Gibson explains how history shows lowering the capital gains tax actually increases government revenue. Gibson asks Obama, with the facts showing lower tax rates actually increase revenue, why raise the capital gains tax at all? Then Senator Obama responds by saying raising taxes is about fairness.
Fairness: The left's cruel punitive dumbass idea to spread the wealth around by removing private property and shoveling it into a corrupt and inefficient government. Just don't call it socialism. Nope - call it "fairness".

Forgetting of course that the wealthy already pay 75% of ALL income taxes paid in this country.. and also forgetting that "fair" should mean the people on the low end should be paying something - as opposed to actually receiving money back from the government for sitting on their asses.

#9 Agree
Slightly OT - saw a segment on Fox where they were debating the debt ceiling/budget/etc. The Phd Finance Professor from some university was insisting that Obama has put forth a detailed plan, that his plan is the most economically sound, that 80% of americans are ok with tax hikes, and that it (the deficit, etc) was the GOP's fault. If a supposed well learned Finance person is spouting this nonsense you have to worry about the rest of the country

...there's hope for him yet.
My thoughts exactly. I'm honing my chops for the next time I meet our newest Friend of the Band, a recent graduate of Columbia with a degree in political science. I really want to hear what they filled her head with although I'm afraid I already know most of it: she's something of an environmentalist.
She seems receptive, and the fact that smarts just ooze out of her in a humble way makes me look forward to that conversation. I've already challenged her in much the same way as I did my buddy last night, with tact, diplomacy and charm. I consider myself on a real mission, to prove to those who're succeptible to suggestion that conservatives aren't what we're made out to be.
If she can be turned, she would be a valuable ally...

I'm a bass player.. and played acoustic guitar and sang in pubs for many years..
I play bass, drums, and percussion in several local blues bands. Last night I played drums, and the bass player is really a guitar player. Go figure. The guitar player is a rather large biker dude who's a big Elmore James fan and with whom I've played bass for years. We had a really good time considering we've never played together before last night.

Someone explain to me this concept of "shared sacrifice."
It seems that when the economy is doing good that the government is justifies in taking more because everyone else has more.
And "shared sacrifice" is when the economy is doing bad the government is is justified in taking more because everyone else has less.
Is this related to the logic of Global Warming?

It's apparent ( to me, anyway) that the economy can show even anemic growth due to it's sheer size and diversity. After re-reading Atlas Shrugged, the parallels are scary. I'm thinking THIS election is probably the last chance to salvage our system, albeit with considerable pain. You seem to be on the same wavelength as I am re: musicians who are almost entirely libs. There are some exceptions, to be sure, but not many. Btw, I've maintained that Cahrlse Jhonnso's descent into babbling lunacy was assisted by his dimwit musician buds freezing him out of playing gigs until he renounced his evil ways. Bush's "Big Government Conservatism".
Some of yaÂ’ll didnÂ’t like my 6 criteria for evals. How do you like Fred BarnesÂ’ criteria from 2003?
The case for Bush's conservatism is strong. Sure, some conservatives are upset because he has tolerated a surge in federal spending, downplayed swollen deficits, failed to use his veto, created a vast Department of Homeland Security, and fashioned an alliance of sorts with Teddy Kennedy on education and Medicare. But the real gripe is that Bush isn't their kind of conventional conservative. Rather, he's a big government conservative.

I sympathize with that POV and I wrestle with it myself, seeing as how I'm in a field overwhelmingly dominated by lefties, but shouting conservatism from the rooftops will likely have detrimental career-related consequences. Now, I either (a) avoid it, or (b) use the "on the one hand, on the other hand..." approach.

good job, but better watch out or you'll find yourself blacklisted, officially or unofficially
That's always a possibility, but after all the years I've playing music here, everyone pretty much knows my political views, although that's not what people think about first when they hear my name, thank goodness. We all have dry spells as far as gigs go, but I seem to be no more different than anyone else as best I can tell. And your explanation of Carhsles Johannssonnn sounds about right. He's probably very emotionally needy. I, on the other hand, have my principles which I will not compromise for anyone. Even I have standards, low though they may be.
I do feel a bit more pressure to play well, as deep down, I feel I must do extra super duper well, playing wise, if for no other reason to confound those who have blindly accepted the lefty image of conservatives as knuckle-dragging, Bible-toting, bitter clingers.

That's not the first time, he's copped to that possibility.. We heard it a few weeks ago, with something along the lines of "I don't really need a second term."
So, what does a narcissistic, vindictive president, who has conceded a second term, do?
He inflicts as much damage as he can on the way out.
It's becoming obvious, that no matter the outcome of the Debt Ceiling negotiations, the economy isn't going to recover.. Not as long as he's hanging around, like the Sword of Damocles over the private sector.
Does anyone doubt, that even as an ex-president, he'll keep inflicting as much damage as he can?

I always try to stay just behind the beat when I play bass. My drumming, however, still has a bit of a rock feel to it, playing right on top or rushing it a tad, which I really have to watch. I cut my drumming teeth by emulating guys like Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford and other prog rock drummers, so now I strive to play just a straight shuffle beat with just enough appropriate fills to break up the monontony. I listen to the guitar player intensely and if he makes a statement, I try to accent that, again using restrant, because it's the blues after all.

National Debt = 14.503 Trillion.
GDP for 2010 = 14.582 Trillion
Off-balance sheet liabilities (see below):
Medicare & Social security = 45+ Trillion
Plus Trillions in malinvestments absorbed from commercial and retail banking institutions in 2008, in addition to 5.5 Trillion of debt absorbed by the government from the GSE's Fannie and Freddie.
In sum, feel free to draw your own conclusions.

This is why I think that this whole push towards a global economy is doomed to fail. Why should we be vulnerable to supply disruptions, such as in the case of natural disasters such as the Japan earthquake, when we could be making those same parts right here at home? And remember all the problems we've had with Chinese suppliers and their total lack of quality control in everything from tainted dog food to tainted infant formula.
That's a glaring deficiency, and one that is fixable. IMHO, we need to go back to the idea of trading with our own surplus production, not depending on anyone else for essentials like food or transportation items. the rest of the world just isn't stable, it never has been, and likely never will be.

BackwardsBoy, so you want to change human nature so that we are motivate by stability versus greed? Our social contract is based on betting on mans baser desires.
No. I'm merely suggesting that we concentrate our efforts here.
We have laws to contain those baser desires and those who succumb to them. What I'm suggesting is that we make our own stuff here, a soapbox which I've danced on for a while. We can trade with the surplus, just like the good old days.
What's being touted by the Global Economy crowd is to shift the reliance on some essentials,to places and circumstances that are out of our control, through outsourcing, like car parts. Trade is great and I'm all for it, but we're currently ignoring the worlds' largest consumer market. I feel that if we were to withdraw from the idea of a world economy that is vastly different than what we once knew, we'd be much better off.

The spin I'm seeing is that government policy no longer moves the economy, so no matter what anyone does - Obama, Congress, a new president - it will have no effect. Therefore, by implication, Obama cannot be blamed for anything.
Let 'em spin. The last figure I saw concerning the cost of regulation and its drag on the economy is $1.75T, yes that's a capital "T", every year.

But you need to think about something that would be more attractive to the babes. I have to say, my VW Eos is a chick magnet. And it's a really practical four-seater hardtop convertible. Decent mileage (considering how heavy the roof is) - I get around 27 mph combined, somewhat over 30 highway (4 speed auto). Great pickup and size (not too big).

To Hugh Hewitt: "...So I really believe doing nothing, and just raising the debt limit is bad, just like defaulting is bad."
Context: "Look, if we do have an actual default, I donÂ’t want to get into scaring people or things like that. Not good things happen, okay? Bad things happen. HereÂ’s the other things, is if we just sort of roll over, and just raise the debt limit because we say you know what, we just canÂ’t cut, we canÂ’t agree, so letÂ’s just raise it? I also think that that will hurt us in the bond markets as well. I also think that that will raise interest rates, because what it sends a signal to the markets is even having Republicans in the majority in the House doesnÂ’t make a difference, the Americans, theyÂ’re not going to cut spending, theyÂ’re not going to get their fiscal house in order, so weÂ’re less likely to get our money back as bond buyers, so weÂ’re going to raise the price. So I really believe doing nothing, and just raising the debt limit is bad, just like defaulting is bad. And so that means weÂ’ve got to cut spending."

The treasury department will prevent a default by taking essentially what is akin to federal workers 401(k) contributions as capital to fund obligations.
Social security could be used in the same way, except it already has been used through intragovernmental debt, just like medicare has. The total national debt is rougly 9 Trillion while the intragovernmental debt comprised of IOU's to governmental agencies amounts to roughly 5 Trillion.
The 5Trillion of IOU's are non-marketable securities as opposed to the other 9Trillion of debt which was sold as bonds and treasury type securities.
Then you add in the off-balance sheet unfunded liabilities of 45 Trillion.
And game on.
The point is, the total National debt is on par to our entire GDP. In other words, complete parity between debt and production with debt overtaking production, as of this writing, it probably is over 100%.
The facts as we know them should already have compelled moody's, s&p and fitch to downgrade the U.S. debt to below investment grade.
How can something that is unsustainable be further impacted by efforts to address same?
This is illogical.
The only constant in all of this is the certainty of change and its impact on what we know to be the status quo.

< One saving point is the fact that when you subract out the intragovernmental borrowing i.e the IOU's to medicare and social security, etc.. which is about $5Trillion, the balance of $9Trillion (referred to as public debt) is about 64%.
When the "public debt" to GDP ratio hits 90%, not even illusion and sleight of hand will be able prop the system up, like now.

Brit humor with some of the same actors.
Never saw it, but I'm liking Hot Fuzz.

It's pouring down rain here, for the second time this week, after 14 weeks of drought.
I danced in it.

Yeah, Papa, I been paying 'ttention.
We'll be back at $3.75 to $3.80/gal in a couple of weeks, and that is, definitely, Recession-City.

This is how you create the impression in the minds of those not paying careful attention that an abysmal performance is A-OK.
Don't let them get away with this.

Don't worry if it hadn't been for our God King Obama America would now have an economy like Haiti.
I think he's wrong only to the extent that he'll achieve this ambition if he is re elected.

Well that's one that is going to be difficult to defend.
After watching the fudging with unemployment I decided to find a number that works... oddly there is an "employed % of the country" number that is published monthly... which seems easier than bothering with all their unemployment games.
http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS12300000
Last month? (tied for the) Lowest month on record since July 1983.
But there was an increase before the 2010 election?
Fine, this isn't a seasonally adjusted number, so lets compare each number to the same month in the year prior...
2009 - all decreased numbers from same month 2008.
2010 - December has a 58.3 > 58.2... all the other numbers are below the same month 2009 numbers.
2011 - all the numbers are declining from same month 2010.
Where was this recovery and growing economy? How does that mesh with job losses for every month in a year-over-year analysis?
I guess you can try for the big lie and hope nobody can find the numbers... or maybe call the BLS.gov website "right-wing trickery". If you're going to go with real numbers you have to admit any "growth" you had didn't even meet the population growth numbers, and therefore was so anemic to be unnoticeable.

And, yup, the economy would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling Republicans!
