— Ace You know what I'm sure is just a coincidence? That Reid picked up the minimum 51 votes to block it.
I don't think that's a coincidence. I think they only wanted 51, because they wanted to permit people like Nelson and Manchin to vote "for" it. I don't know if those guys did vote for it; but in hard votes like this, they usually arrange it so they can vote "for" popular, conservative-friendly measure.
It's fake. It's arranged.
The CCB gets 2-1 support among adults in the newest CNN poll.
And yet the media never once treated it as a viable proposal.
Go figure.
Given than Armageddon is Coming and is Scheduled for August 2nd, don't the Democrats have some obligation to start putting plans and serious offers on the table?

“Senator Reid’s scramble to vote on this bill a day earlier than previously announced shows that Cut, Cap, and Balance is quickly gaining momentum,” said Rep. Jim Jordan (R., Ohio), chairman of the Republican Study Committee, which was largely responsible for drafting the legislation. “Senate Democrats should stop hiding behind a procedural vote to block a plan with two-to-one support from the American public. So long as it has the support of the American people, Cut, Cap, and Balance remains very much alive.”

Because the package under discussion includes tax increases as well as spending cuts, Reid claimed, and due to the Constitutional requirement that all revenue bills originate in the lower chamber, “the path to avert default now runs first to the House of Representatives…We in the Senate must wait for them.”

Srsly, is it as bad as it seems?

No, it's an artificial deadline. The USA has enough revenue to service our debt. This is about spending more and raising taxes.

I wish I had an answer for that, I really do. It depends on whether he wants to triangulate or go the other route. This is one reason why I wish they would just finish this now instead of waiting until the market reacts. But we do have hope in that the House Rs have been solid thus far and are holding Boehner accountable along the way. The probability of eventually coming to an agreement is high, but it looks like the Rs will try to get as much out of it as they can.

The irony is that leftists are who the ROP hates the most. They're also the easiest to take advantage of. It's going to be a disaster eventually, once the Muslim numbers swell even more in Norway and other such places.

It would not have been a deadline if the Treasury started prioritizing a few months ago, but the administration is playing brinksmanship with the economy. Don't let a crisis go to waste, and if you don't have a crisis, manufacture one.
Rep. Ryan and some other fiscal cons (e.g., Rep. John Campbell) have said we'll be running 50-50 around the middle of next month, or so it was last week. He believes we're just buying time now (until a downgrade and austerity).

"The goal is to foment enough public discontent, moral confusion, and outright chaos to spark the social upheaval that Marx, Engels, and Lenin predicted"
Yeah, but apparently Alinsky hadn't noticed that the last time they tried this crap the social upheaval began in beer halls, the denizens of which soon began looking for Alinsky and his comrades.

I can think of 51 checks we can cancel right off the bat. Say, that is a nice dream!
Table it--no. It flushes it down the old crapper

didn't read all the comments, so apologies if someone else already had this thought:
'Cut, Cap & Balance' reminds me too much of 'Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive and Dodge' anyway

Dick Morris' strategy seems sound to me. He posted this vid in April http://tinyurl.com/3dbbm3q , and I heard him repeat it on either Hannity or O'Reilly a couple nights ago, updated to fit current circumstances.
Basically, it calls for the House to pass a bill that says, in essence, "If agreement is not reached on the debt limit, any incoming tax revenues must be first allocated to service interest on the debt. Remainder must next go to pay salaries of active military personnel. Any remaining after that must go to fund outgoing social security checks...etc."
Send THAT to the Senate and dare them to defeat it, and Obama to veto it. He believes it would force the Senate and WH to stop holding the country's credit rating hostage, and from scaremongering old people about their means of livlihood, Oh, and show the country that that's exactly what they've been doing all along. How would the media be able to spin that?

CCB shouldn't and cannot be the end, it has to be just the beginning. If we can cut and restructure, and grow by removing the burdensome regulatory structure as well as enticing money on the sidelines into action, we can get the debt under control.
Unfortunately, those are all huge if's, and the Dems dont give a fuck if we get downgraded, as they believe it will allow them to exert even greater control over our money and lives. Repubs are nearly as bad, because they are as likely to push crony capitalism and cheap labor against us too. Part of this gets back to the "control" of the Senate by selecting candidates who can actually win their race but who also have to but ones who will support our agenda, unlike say the Bobsey Twins from Maine, amongst others. Hell, even Cornyn is a bit of a squish, but generally manageable.

1) They are counting 1 Trillion from the assumed end of the Iraq/Afgan Wars- so double counting
2) Another 1 Trillion in “descrestoinary” spending? Sounds like bullshit to me
3) And the rest is mostly number tricks with how you count.
That's why they can't stand Murdoch, not becuase of any lapses in judgment in the UK case.
