Democrats Win NY-26 Special Election
— DrewM

Let the overreactions begin!

A couple of random thoughts...

Special elections are always hinky affairs at best. With a fake tea party candidate in the race and the previous seat holder disgraced in a Craig's List dating scandal, this wasn't anything approaching "at best" for Republicans.

The NY GOP just sucks at these (as does the party nationally). They lost NY-20 when Kirsten Gillibrand was named to the Senate. They lost NY-23 when John McHugh was named Secretary of the Army (that was the whole Dede Scozzafava v. Doug Hoffman race). The one win was the race to replace Eric "The Tickler" Massa in NY-29 but that special was held concurrently with the general election last November.

The party picked candidates (NY doesn't allow for primaries in specials, the county chairs name candidates) in NY-20 and NY-23 did lousy jobs. I really didn't follow this race, so I can't say what kind of job she did. She was apparently late in reacting to the Democratic attacks via Medicare). Another strike against her may have been her opposition to Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo's budget cuts.

Naturally, the Democrats and the MFM will see this as a referendum on the Ryan plan. Of course if Corwin had won they would have said Ryan had nothing to do with it.

As someone noted on Twitter (sorry, can't remember who)...it's not like the Democratic wins in special elections in 2010 meant much come November, did it?

On the upside, the GOP got a look at the Democrats playbook on attacking the Ryan plan. We should be better prepared moving forward. Yeah, we shouldn't have been surprised this time but some lessons have to be learned anew.

NY is slated to lose 2 House seats next year through redistricting. This seat could be one of them anyway.

And finally, BaseballCrank has some sage advice for the NY GOP for the next time this situation comes up.

Greg will be here to say OMGZ doom.

Though we should not have lost this seat. This was just fucking stupid.

We lose big in the Wisconsin Recalls, and I will start really worrying.

But this holds about as much of a canary in the coal mine, when you look at house special elections, as the 2009 specials did for 2010.

17 All the concerned Republicans are all over the political sites saying this is purely a referendum on the Republican budget when there are too many factors in this particular race. From what I've read these last few weeks, the blame is more on the part of the NY Republican Party for the lousy way they managed this campaign, and some blame also lies with Corwin. Hochul was simply better on overall messaging and presentation and she and Davis threw everything they had at Corwin. The GOP poured money in there and tried to fight but they started far too late and they focused on the wrong things.

Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at May 24, 2011 06:58 PM (CLYmB)

18 I'm afraid that Jane Corwin's loss in the most heavily Republican district in New York accelerates a trend I saw coming with the near-win of Kloppenberg.  Obama and the Democrats are going to be a force to be reckoned with next year and there's nothing we can do about it.

The man got bin Laden, for God's sake.  Game.  Set.  Match.  Meanwhile, the American people HATE Paul Ryan and his plan and are going to take it out on everyone with an "R" behind their names from now until next November.

You all know how these off-year New York special congressional elections are bellwethers of the coming election cycle.  NY-23 was when Bill Owens took it in 2009, resulting in a 2010 election cycle that could not by any definition be called a wave for the GOP.

The public loves Obama, they're rallying around Democrats everywhere in America, and everyone had just better get used to it.

Posted by: Greg at May 24, 2011 06:59 PM (FYCiJ)

19 If this happened in, say, Oklahoma, I'd be pissed.  It happened in NY.  So, I'm not pissed.  The Pubs still rule the House, and they might even take the Senate next year.  This election doesn't change a thing.

I'd say Corwin's messaging was ineffective on more than one issue. She was on the defensive for much of the campaign, including the debate.

I don't buy it either but that's now the narrative and the political scientists are predicting the House Rs will find a way to soften that original budget vote. What they're missing is that messaging has been and remains a difficulty for the GOP, regardless of the issue. Yes, they were effective during the last campaign but it's not good enough. The Dems are just better at messaging and they have the entire media complex on their side. Maybe the playing field wouldn't be so uneven if the Rs collectively tried their hands at offensive. Instead, they'll likely take the wrong message from this and agree with the MFM.

Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at May 24, 2011 07:14 PM (CLYmB)

35 According to the MFM the 2010 election results in no way had anything to do with the American people being unhappy with Barry and his policies but this one election shows a total repudiation of the entire Republican party.

Well, I did my part, but it wasn't good enough.

Word is, Corwin won by a little in the 5 rural counties, lost by a little in Niagara Co, and lost by about her margin of defeat in the parts of northeastern Erie Co (suburbs of heavily-Democratic Buffalo). So it was the same damn fools in Erie Co who always elect Democrats, even as the economy has constantly declined for decades, and people migrate away to make a living.

As far as next time 'round, I think Republicans just barely control the state senate, so I'm not sure how that works for the gerrymandering. Like I said, the City of Buffalo has lost (or at least not gained) population, so the heavily Democratic districts in Buffalo may shrink and leave some on the surrounding ones more vulnerable to Republicans. But I don't really know.

To add to the gloom and doom, though, just think how my fellow native Buffalonians who have fled because Democrats have destroyed the local economy are coming to YOUR state to infect it with their poison as well. They're like locusts.

44

Oh, some of Hochol's messaging sounded pretty lame to me, but maybe others are clueless enough to buy it.

They said, for example, that the budget plan Corwin was for would add $8T to the national debt over 10 years. If you had a clue, you would do the math, say "Hey, that's $0.8T/yr, which would cut the deficit in half!"

Hochol also said she would cut "wasteful spending, starting with money we send to countries who don't support us, like Pakistan". Again, if you had a clue you'd know that eliminating "wasteful spending" could never possibly be enough to make a difference, that she wasn't likely to do it anyway, that foreign aid doesn't amount to squat, that Pakistan does help us out some for the money we send them, which is a fraction of a percent of the deficit.

But, again, that's if you had a clue.

Beyond that, Hochol was not nearly as attractive or well-spoken as Corwin, seemed kinda bitchy/snarky, to me, in comparison, and Corwin had a lot of ads with Hochol praising the wonderful job that Nancy Pelosi has done.

I'm not so sure. As an article I saw a day or two ago showed, as Davis lost ground, the D gained more ground than the R. His ads were all about protectionism - keeping jobs in the US. Would that appeal to a Tea Partier? I wouldn't think so, but I could be wrong.

Were there some people who only looked at the "Tea Party" indicator on the ballot? Well, I suppose that's possible, but you'd kind of have to live under a rock to be unaware of that scam. I was getting at least a half-dozen political calls a day, and there were endless TV ads.

Posted by: Optimizer at May 24, 2011 08:04 PM (F56VB)

All I can think of is that it was supposedly a top guy in her campaign who staged that video of Davis, and maybe that made her look like a dirty trickster, although that's ironic, considering that Davis was a Tea Party impersonator.

Basically, the local TV and the major newspaper (owned by Warren Buffet, even) are heavily liberal, so I'm sure that didn't help. I don't think she was well-known. Come to think of it, the media would sometimes refer to "Tea Party candidate Jack Davis" so maybe he did get away with that scam, that way.

If Corwin (R) had gotten 3/4 of Davis's votes, with the other 1/4 to the (D), it would have been about tied. I'm not sure that would have happened, if Davis hadn't run. Even with ALL his votes, Corwin would have only been about 2400 ahead.

This is a solidly Republican district - it wasn't about Davis (the fake Tea Party guy). A Republican should be winning by a significant margin.

Oh, and to make things worse, Corwin spent about 2-1/2 times as much as the (D). Davis spent almost as much, and self-financed the whole amount.

Unless you want to buy that independents are worried about Medicare (who knows?), I'd go with the theory that Corwin and Davis both looked bad over the video clip incident, where Davis was caught apparently assaulting a reporter, and it later came out that it was some high up in Corwin's campaign. Sometime before that, Corwin was somewhat ahead, and Davis had 25% (vs. the 9% he ended up with).

Posted by: Optimizer at May 24, 2011 10:19 PM (F56VB)

53 Oh, last dismal thought (I hope): Corwin was one of those successful business people that we need more of in Congress. The (D) is a long time politician with a record of raising taxes whose current job is Erie County Clerk (Buffalo's county).

Yes the spin is in now

The Hill is always glad to print the sin from the commies

Democrat Kathy Hochul pulled off a victory in New York's special election Tuesday in a race that had been cast as a referendum on the GOP's Medicare proposal.

Independent candidate Jack Davis, a former Democrat who ran on the Tea Party line, garnered 8 percent.

No mention that this was a fake Tea Party candidate and that 8% was a virtual illegal candidate.

"TonightÂ’s election result is not just a victory for Congresswoman-Elect Kathy Hochul, itÂ’s a victory for the residents of Western New York and for Americans who believe that our elected leaders should fight to protect Medicare and ensure that our government works for our seniors, working families and young people," Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement.

“There are two reasons we won tonight. Kathy Hochul is a great candidate and a Western New Yorker through and through. And New Yorkers of all political persuasions do not want to destroy Medicare. This election was a strong referendum on both," Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said.

Chucky cheese head there is one reason and only one reason you "won". It's called fraud.

In the news rollers, or those quick 60 seconds of news they rolled between commercials, they mentioned the election twice.

The first one they mentioned the "Tea Party" candidate first, getting his name out there... then went on to mentioned the favorite who is a democrat, the republican, and finally the green candidate.

The second one they talked about how the election was a clear referendum on the GOP budget proposal and the Ryan plan.

This was a set up from the start.

64 Washington Times continues the meme:

Democrat Kathy Hochul pulled off a stunning, come-from-behind victory Tuesday night in New YorkÂ’s 26th Congressional District in a race that was billed as a proxy fight over the GOPÂ’s plans to change Medicare.

Get that plug in there

But the race started going south for Mrs. Corwin after she announced her support for the Ryan plan. Mrs. Hochul pounced on the announcement, attacking Mrs. CorwinÂ’s stance, while vowing to protect seniors by ensuring the survival of Medicare and Social Security.

And even worse that "The Hill" there is zero mention of the fake Tea Party asshole.

Posted by: Vic at May 25, 2011 02:32 AM (M9Ie6)

65 Washington Post is virtually identicle

Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul won a House special election in western New York on Tuesday night, a Democratic triumph in a conservative district that many regarded a referendum on House RepublicansÂ’ efforts to reform Medicare.

And the fake Tea Party asshole is an "independent" there.

Posted by: Vic at May 25, 2011 02:56 AM (M9Ie6)

66 Note:

With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Hochul had 48 percent of the vote. State Assemblywoman Jane Corwin (R) had 42 percent, with independent candidate Jack Davis running a distant third with 9 percent.

If this election had been in SC they would have to do a "run-off" because no candidate got 50% of the vote. That is how you fix stupid fraud like this,

Davis began with 23% of vote.  Refugees broke 5:1 for the Dimmi.

And GOP goons blame the TEA party inbred reprobates for the loss.

Keep it up azzlappers.

71 As someone that had to listen to more about this stupid race than anyone, the blame goes solely on the GOP for blowing this one. NY-26 is specifically gerrymandered to include the old, rich, lily white northern suburbs of Buffalo and western suburbs of Rochester. Corwin immediately going along with Ryan's plan, basically admitting she didn't read it, was a BIG mistake.

The laughable Davis "punching" incident was the final kick in the pants for Corwin. Whoever thought that was a good idea needs to be fired.

Generic (R) is highly likely to win whatever similarly misshapen mass this district will be in '13, so don't hate NY too much, morons.
