Dems Cave on Keystone XL
— Gabriel Malor

You might have seen this from Guy Benson a little while ago: Victory II: Democrats Cave on Keystone in Payroll Tax Cut Deal. He's got a GOP source that says the Democrats are giving us Keystone XL in exchange for a mere two month extension of the payroll tax cuts.

Click over then come back; there's some good stuff there. Here are more details, as sent to me by one of our guys on the Hill:

What [it] basically does is require the State Department to issue the permit for Keystone XL within 60 days, unless President Obama explicitly says the pipeline is not in the national interest and kills it (that would definitely not be good for him to do).

It also tells State to allow construction to go ahead while it works with Nebraska to resolve any remaining environmental or routing issues. The governor and legislature there are on board with getting a new route to allay any concerns.

So we got the Keystone language, Dems got a 2 month extension of their payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance, but the cost is fully offset (with spending cuts) so it doesnÂ’t add to the deficit.

As Ace noted this afternoon, Press Secretary Jay Carney was reluctant to repeat Obama's veto threat over Keystone XL, so the President is in the hot seat now. Democrats and unions (BIRM) were freaking out over being put in a position to oppose the thousands of jobs represented by Keystone XL.

Obama can still cancel the pipeline under the deal, but, as Guy writes, it's much more likely that he's about to throw the enviroweenies under the bus. It was one thing when the vague "Obama State Department" was putting the pipeline on hold for further studies that wouldn't be concluded until after the election. But now Obama would be on the record as saying that the proposed pipeline isn't in the national interest. That's not going to happen. This man doesn't vote "no." He votes "present."

Can I get a big "good job" for Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader McConnell? The Hill reported earlier today that McConnell was making a big push on this. It paid off.

BTW: For the folks who always ask themselves why the media, why Politico, why the Hill, etc., always end up with info before conservative media and conservative blogs, note that this went out to us before it hit the wires. The GOP is learning.

Oh and further: Drink the sweet, vegetarian tears of the enviroweenies:

"It's bulls—-," said Sierra Club President Michael Brune. "This is no way to run a government. We've got Republicans in Congress who are willing to hold the entire government hostage simply to give a Christmas present to industry."

Yum.

Thanks to Slublog for that.

He is smarter than people think.

9 #5  Thay think that when this comes up in 2 months, that we will cave on Payroll tax. (Don't see why,  since we have a mechanism to pay for it.)  Also, Obama probably thinks he can get away with stopping it using that "national interest" clause or something.

He has made a fatal error.  People will be even MORE enraged if jobs they were anticipating are suddenly yanked away from them.

Osama Obama will blithely announce that the pipeline is Bad -- thus keeping the love of the Greenies and other environmental ninnies -- while carrying away the political win of doing the Republicans in the eye.

Sometimes, we are so consumed by wishcasting that we find faux victory in defeat.

44 Perhaps I just am so unfamiliar with the concept of the GOP not getting rolled that I can't recognize it, but the whole thing with the put it on the President seems like a briar patch thing (I denounce myself). The President would LOVE to fluff his greenie friends because they, unlike the unions, may choose not to give him money. He will be glad to cancel and blame the GOP for forcing his hand, saying that he thought that the Great Plains of the US were too beautiful to despoil and that he intended for lots of scientific research and all, but not in 2 months, no way that a rational evaluation can occur in that time. That the GOP was willing to pollute our great country for the sake of creating some temporary jobs in the industries of the past while denying investment in permanent jobs in the industries of the future. Yeah, its all bullshit, but it will be echoed all around.

Being from Nebraska, I don't know for certain how much the environuts spent on advertising trying to convince the people of my state that the oil companies were going to be intentionally poisoning our water supply, killing our children and pushing our grandmothers off of cliffs and such but it must have been a very pretty penny indeed. I remember seeing ad after ad after ad on the local stations.. they must have spent millions on advertising alone trying to kill the pipeline here in my state. Which begs the question, couldn't that money have been better spent on healthcare or food for the "downtrodden" and or "needy"? I mean especially since those millions they spent are going to kill a whole lot of jobs putting more and more of us into the downtrodden and needy category?

“They’ve just killed the Keystone pipeline. They killed it because they forced the president to make a decision before he can make it so he’s not going to move forward with it,” said Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and an ally of environmental groups.

Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) said he was not concerned about giving in to Republicans on the Keystone provision.

“The president is apparently just going to use the option given to him not to let it go [forward],” said Levin. “There’s a waiver in there which we understand the president is going to exercise.”

95 So why didn't they just approve it right now, by 'operation of law'? It's not like there is going to be any more studies done in the next 60 days.

Senate Dems probably wouldn't have agreed to that.

Keep in mind that Obama's plan was to vote "present" on it until after the election. The GOP took that dodge away from him- either he approves it (by doing nothing) or he deliberately kills it. Option A he pisses off the environmental weenies, option B he pisses off the unions.

Like some of the ones that fly around here during the Doom Posts? Over retirees not deserving what benefits they get?

I don't recall anyone saying retirees don't deserve their benefits.  In fact, the general argument is that the system is unsustainable, and must change, so changes must be made to the benefits of future retirees.

It's also possible he plays the "60 days isn't enough time to properly study the issue" card, denies the deal, but says he'll reconsider after it's been further looked at (i.e. after the election).

So the question is why not just authorize the pipeline straight out. Answer is cause Dems won't allow that. But they will allow it if Obama can cancel it. Hmmm. Why is that do you think?

He will lose dems in congress that are dependent on unions as well as trade unions if he fucks this up. Plus we will be down to 2 or 3 or hopefully 1 candidate by then that can beat him up over it on a daily basis.

"CUERO, Texas—Oil-drilling activity in the U.S. has accelerated to a pace not seen in a generation as energy companies, oilfield contractors and landowners rush to exploit newly profitable sources of crude.

The number of rigs aiming for oil in the U.S. is the highest since at least 1987, according to Baker Hughes Inc. The 818 rigs tallied by the oilfield-service company last week are nearly double last year's count and about 10 times the number that were drilling for oil in the late 1990s."

All fine and dandy, but what's the point of repeatedly extending unemployment insurance? It doesn't put people back to work.

Concentrate on changing the atmosphere to one of being business-friendly, instead of business-hostile, and unemployment insurance payouts will fall as companies start to hire again.

262 thanks very much, this is a very long post to read but very very inspiring. I totally agree with when you said that you donÂ’t have to give people ideas. I also work in sales, on my own, and I found out that if you have to many options people donÂ’t know what to choose so is better to leave them with only one option because the sale will be 100% closed and a lot faster.
