Depressed President Now Increasingly Self-Isolated and Listless
— Ace

Last month, Gawker claimed the NYT had a big scoop-- that the president was suffering from something that looks very similar to full-blown clinical depression.

The Times being the Times, they never ran that story.

But the New York Post now runs an article with a very similar angle, noting the "rumor" keeps going around.

The reports are not good, disturbing even. I have heard basically the same story four times in the last 10 days, and the people doing the talking are in New York and Washington and are spread across the political spectrum.
The gist is this: President Obama has become a lone wolf, a stranger to his own government. He talks mostly, and sometimes only, to friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett and to David Axelrod, his political strategist.

Everybody else, including members of his Cabinet, have little face time with him except for brief meetings that serve as photo ops. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner both have complained, according to people who have talked to them, that they are shut out of important decisions.

President Obama has become a lone wolf, a stranger to his own government.

The presidentÂ’s workdays are said to end early, often at 4 p.m. He usually has dinner in the family residence with his wife and daughters, then retreats to a private office. One person said he takes a stack of briefing books. Others arenÂ’t sure what he does.

This article doesn't exactly float the "depression" rumor. Instead it discusses the president not talking to his aides, but narrates it in such a way as to suggest depression.

51% of the country says Obama does not deserve a second term, versus 41%, the most vindictive people in the world, who do wish to punish our over-his-head flop-sweat failure of a president with another four years of ego-grinding futility.

Oh, by the way: Hi!

"Mr. Attorney General, you have made numerous statements about Fast and Furious that have eventually been proven to be untrue. Your lack of trustworthiness while speaking about Fast and Furious has called into question your overall credibility as Attorney General. The time for deflecting blame and obstructing our investigation is over. The time has come for you to come clean to the American public about what you knew about Fast and Furious, when you knew it, and who is going to be held accountable for failing to shut down a program that has already had deadly consequences, and will likely cause more casualties for years to come.

Operation Fast and Furious was the Department's most significant gun trafficking case. It related to two of your major initiatives – destroying the Mexican cartels and reducing gun violence on both sides of the border. On your watch, it went spectacularly wrong. Whether you realize yet or not, you own Fast and Furious. It is your responsibility."

If this were a Republican president's schedule the media would eat him alive...and more importantly, stir up the American people to scream for his head. Especially with 9+ % unemployment.

But I guess I'm just being racist by bringing up the fact that maybe he is just a lazy, shiftless fuck.

101 This is a man who needs constant injections of lavish praise to feed his ever hungry ego

He no doubt believed all the press clippings that he was the Smartest Man Ever to Walk the Earth and just his election alone would cause the seas to stop rising.

It's not going according to the script written by Axelrod, and he's discovered that the Best and Brightest around him don't have a clue either.

Without the constant praise and coddling, his inner fears that he's an underqualified fraud are creeping in

103 but I hope for the sake of the country these rumors are false.

There are enough checks on his actual destructive powers (as President) that I don't fear too much for the country if he's actually having a breakdown.  What I do fear is that his Cabinet is so paralyzed with Race Fear that they won't step in if it becomes necessary to do so.

I had only seen reports like this in what I would call "fringe" Internet sources -- mostly from Ulsterman and his anonymous (and possibly fictitious) "White House Insider."   Nevertheless I believed them, because they rang true psychologically to me.   This sort of withdrawal into a cocoon is what it would look like if a not-that-smart-but-incredibly-arrogant political novice got elected President on a wave of utopia-commences-tomorrow hopey-changey happy talk, and then had to confront an intractable reality ill-equipped by experience, talent, or temperament.   He would sink into a smaller and smaller sphere, afraid of being humiliated, afraid of being in a room with grownups who know the score.    If we want to extend the metaphor of the Emperor Who Has No Clothes, this is exactly how an emperor would act if he found himself naked and people started noticing.... he'd hide.

The New York Post is not exactly the Times or CNN or NBC or CBS or ABC, but I'd expect stories like this to start leaking out more and more.

I fear, however, that he does.  Or, rather, that his Cabinet is so afraid of being labelled "Racist" that they'll go along even though they know they shouldn't.

Obama knows that the economy isn't going to improve, and might actually get far worse.

They figure the economy is so fucked that the new GOP administration will take office just around the time the whole thing goes under, with Obamacare just around the corner

The 2014 elections put the House and Senate back into Dem hands from the midterm backlash, and a "cured" Obama runs again in 2016 to "save us"

143 Obama, the loner president

"This president endures with little joy the small talk and back-slapping of retail politics, rarely spends more than a few minutes on a rope line, refuses to coddle even his biggest donors. His relationship with Democrats on Capitol Hill is frosty, to be generous. Personal lobbying on behalf of legislation? He prefers to leave that to Vice President Biden, an old-school political charmer.

ObamaÂ’s circle of close advisers is as small as the cluster of personal friends that predates his presidency. There is no entourage, no Friends of Barack to explain or defend a politician who has confounded many supporters with his cool personality and penchant for compromise."

June 6, 2011 Daily economic briefings disappear from Obama's White House schedule By Sam Youngman - 06/06/11 06:06 PM ET At some point during the first two years of his administration, President Obama stopped receiving the daily economic briefing that he requested when he took office. Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs announced at his own first daily briefing reporters that Obama asked for the daily economic briefing, described then as comparable to the daily intelligence briefing the president gets every morning. “The president asked that this be added every day to his schedule,” Gibbs said at the time. Gibbs added that Obama believed it is “important that each day he receive the most up to date information as it relates to the economy.” But at some point, the daily economic briefings stopped showing up on Obama's daily schedule. White House officials said the meetings slowly petered out, but Obama still receives a daily economic briefing on paper.

184 I still find it plausible that Obama was molested as a young teen by that bisexual Communist freak in Hawaii. His own autobiography talks about visiting "Frank" where he'd a share a drink and Frank would tell dirty jokes. Obama was like 15 at the time. And he's already a kind of pretty, delicate man.

Seriously, if I ever hear that some grown man is giving my 15 year old daughter alcohol and telling her dirty jokes ... I'm calling the cops. Or getting out my shotgun.

If Obama had been a girl it would've been obvious what was going on. But he was a boy ... a boy spending time with a known pervert who wrote books about bisexual orgies! WTF?

Add to this fact that Obama appears to have no known ex-girlfriends. That's odd. No chick who dated him in high school college, or his 20s wants to brag about how she used to date the President? Really?

I'm not saying Obama is gay.  Just that his sexuality is, at best, atypical. But I think his behavior is consistent with someone who was molested as a young teen. Trouble forming sexual/romantic relationships with women, depressive, withdrawn, etc.

Shortly after Nixon resigned, a slew of books and articles came out, most of them related to Watergate and the then-recent Ford pardon and so on. Near the end of his tenure, just prior to his decision to resign, Nixon, too, was awash in depression. He kept to himself, and staffers reportedly heard him in the Oval Office, alone for sometimes hours at a time, muttering and cursing. He was given to outbursts of strong emotion, where he would break down in tears. Nixon's increasingly erratic behavior so alarmed his cabinet and senior advisors that high-level officials such as Henry Kissinger and Alexander Haig supposedly took steps to ensure President Nixon's commander-in-chief preogatives like, say, authorizing a nuclear strike, were (unofficially) severely curtailed. The chain of command was essentially diverted at the top for the safety of the country. Haig implied as much later in interviews. Kissinger has remained largely quiet on the subject.

Whether we agree with or support a given President or not on any or all issues is beside the point. A president in the grip of a mental illness or emotional disorder is a potentially catastrophic situation. Clinical depression, in particular, distorts reasoning, warps perceptions, and exaggerates emotional responses. Now, imagine a sudden crisis--a real one, with the fate of the world at stake. On second thought, don't. Too scary to contemplate.

Yeah, it must suck to be King Putt right now.

Consider:

he's he's been fawned over and told he's awesome all his life

he's glided thru the various institutions without any heavy lifting

he's had adoring crowds throughout his presidential campaign

his lapdogs and fluffers in the press have compared him to Abraham Lincoln, Superman, and God Almighty

he's America's first non-white President

and now whe finds out HE SUCKS AT HIS JOB! OMG I suck so bad at being President! I was totally so not ready for this! Nothing works!! Everyone is staring at me!! FUUUUUUUUUCK this sucks! I suck and I can't make it stop!! Rahm!! RAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHMMMM!!!

Of course, that's not nearly as damning as you'd think- I'm sure virtually no one remembers me from the time I spent in college (what of it there was).  I'm a classic introvert and not (therefore) very outgoing.  It's possible that the President is the same way.

Which would also explain his depression- just talking to people I don't know is very emotionally draining, I can only imagine having to do that all day (well, okay, an hour or two) every day.

It's pretty much accepted now that Edith was the one running the Executive. As to how she did, um, well, shit had pretty much went to hell in 1919, race riots everywhere and many hundreds dead. Over the months she was running the place, I understand the country settled down internally but Wikipedia (yeah, I know) reports that the US lost some crucial ground in world diplomacy. There is a douchebag lefty artist based out of Chicago named Tony Fitzpatrick who's famous for doing bad paintings of mass murderers. He's your typical lefty dumbass: entirely secular and contemptuous of anything to the right of Studs Terkel.

Well, not entirely secular, it turns out...

See, I heard this @sshole on the radio recently droning on and on about how he heard some tea party type bagging on Islam and how it made him want to reach out to that community, and after visiting a couple of mosques he now believes that the Islamic call is, you guessed it, the prettiest sound on Earth.

And this was entirely in response to some tea party thing he'd witnessed. It was so condescending that my radio almost self-destructed. It was so obvious that this guy didn't give a damn about Islam. All he wanted to do was stick his thumb in the eyes of conservatives.

Every now and then you run into someone who's the perfect embodiment of the worst liberal cliches, and that's this guy.

Yeah, Wilson. I expect it would be a combo of Jarrett and the Mrs. The tell-all books after this administration are going to be bone-chilling.

Yeah, he's one of those "angry" lefties, too. He just gets so darn mad at those evil rotten right wingers, and that proves how smart he is. Because he's angry.  Grrrrr! Like that.

But then the Muslim call to prayer calms him right down. There's just something about listening to those savages chanting their moronic religious nonsense that just soothes his tolerant heart.

278 Reasons why Obama is depressed:
1. Found out Biden and Holder were the masterminds of Qwikster
2. Red States can't be sold to the Chinese before the next election
3. Golf withdrawal
4. Heroin, cocaine, and pot isn't a "service" the Secret Service provides
5. Media hand jobs in the Oval office is now frowned upon
6. Wii golf ability doesn't translate to actual golf course
7. Women no longer get hot and bothered by Global warming speech
8. At a certain point, Dat Ass on Michelle will have it's own gravitational pull
9. Saving up all that money for Iphone 5 for nothing
10.Googled SCOAMF

What does this infantile little douche have to be depressed about?

288 I wonder how the Mexican People are taking this.

Basically, the Gov't of the United States deliberately armed drug lords as they fought the Mexican Gov't for control of  large tracts of Mexican soil. In effect, we have supplied arms to rebels trying to overthrow the Mexican Gov't (at least in specific areas).

If I were Mexican I'd be outraged by this, and demand my Gov't take steps to deal with it.

The Mexican Government has been fairly muted in their protests, but their citizenry could force a change. What could they do? Maybe file a complaint with the OAS or UN, maybe something else. If Mexico brings this up in either of those forums the lid is off. It'll have to be reported in this country.

309 So the poor wumpkin is depressed.

Since he's a Democrat, I'm sure is years after the Presidency won't be quiet and respectful ones where he lives a life of dignity as a private citizen.   No.  Much more fun to ankle bite his successors and Monday morning quarterback their attempts to dig us out of the very deep hole he left his country in.  Given his track record, I would not expect anything less.

'The presidentÂ’s workdays are said to end early, often at 4 p.m. He usually has dinner in the family residence with his wife and daughters, then retreats to a private office. '

Retreat to it??? Hell, I'm there all damn day, if I can swing it!  It's the Man Cave, y'ow?

"...Often you have to knock for some time before being given approval from inside to enter.  The big screen will be on – the volume loud.  You can easily hear it from outside the door.  The sports channels are the ones most commonly playing, though sometimes the channel will be set to music, or Fox News.  Sometimes Valerie Jarrett might be there, but most often it is just the president and his personal aide.  A large leather chair will be facing the television – itÂ’s well worn.  Not part of the White House furnishings but something the president must have brought in from back home.  ThatÂ’s where youÂ’ll most often find the President of the United States – the most powerful man in the free fucking world.  He often sits with one leg draped over one of the chairÂ’s arms and the other leg stuck straight onto the floor.  Shorts, sweats, a t-shirt, and like I said, no shoes or just those sandal things that so many of the younger people like to wear these days.  And that leg thatÂ’s draped over an arm of the chair will be bopping up and down, likeÂ…like someone with  a lot of nervous energy.  Like a kid does.  And thereÂ’s the smell of smoke hanging on the president.  The guy never quit smoking – that was all bullshit...."
