Does Obama Unconsciously Want To Lose?
— Ace

Our listless, hapless, distracted, depressed president might be looking for a soft bit of canvas to flop on.

There are only two ways to look at the Obama re-election campaign right now: Either the upstart candidate who stunned the world when he defeated the Clinton machine to capture the Democratic nomination three years ago has lost every bit of that massive mojo, or the bruised and battered president, after three years in office, just doesnÂ’t want another spin in the Oval Office.

How else to explain the nonstop missteps, the stammering and stuttering campaign, not to mention the brazen attacks on American voters, who, he has said, have “fallen behind,” lost their “ambition and imagination,” gotten “lazy” and “a bit soft” - this is a guy seeking the support of America?!

Curl has a good point about Obama's future, if he won:

He knows that over the next four years, with automatic budget cuts set to take effect and the American peopleÂ’s rising ire over the profligate spending in Washington, heÂ’s going to have no money to redistribute to the masses.

So, why bother? ItÂ’s going to get worse before it gets better. Who needs it? Why preside over a government that, instead of giving everything to everybody free, takes it all away, cuts so deeply that nearly every American will be affected? Especially if you think Americans are lazy, lack ambition - theyÂ’ll never rise to the challenge, so why not just bail?

That's an interesting point -- Obama likes playing the redistributionist hero. He's unhappy because he can't play that role now.

Would he be able to play that role in 2013 and 2014, if he won?

There is a big reason Obama would like to hang on: Vindication. Just as he thought the recovery would be automatic in 2009, freeing him up to pursue whatever political agenda he liked, trusting that the Recovery Fairy would sprinkle some expansion pixie dust on America and fix everything, I think he still believes that it's coming. Just a little delayed. And it will be a big recovery, because of his policies, not despite them.

So he could be imagining that if he can just get through this brief, half-decade-long rough patch, the days where he gets to play Liberal Hero again are just around the corner.

Would he be able to spend like gangbusters? Not as much, but the Republicans couldn't do much to stop him when he was unpopular; if the economy recovered, and he was back to being on the news everyday to talk about how awesome he is, they'd be able to restrain him even less.

So I don't know about this claim. Interesting, but I can see him genuinely holding out hope that his big ObamaRecovery is just lost in the mail, but will get here any day now.

In Obama's mind, being a two-term president who doesn't look like those 'other guys on the dollar bills' is a big thumb in the eye to America.

That's all Obama wants, after all.

13 There are always some who have more than others. So, the redistributionist fantasy will live on for eternity, whether in a post-industrial Nation Below Canada, or in a Mad Max wasteland. At any rate, Dick Soetero doesn't need to only steal from Peter to pay Paul. There is a big, noisy printing press at the Fed that he can shove into overdrive if necessary. Dick Soetero is just sad that his subjects are so unworthy of his greatness.

In late October the Richmond Tea Party sent a letter to city officials demanding a refund for the $10,000 the group spent on permits, portable toilets, police presence and emergency personnel for three rallies held at same plaza where the Occupy Richmond squatters set up their camp. Now the tea party is being audited.

I have often entertained the theory that Barack Obama was simply David Axelrod's joke on America.  Axelrod is a career PR guy and I think he wanted to see if he really could get *anyone* elected President.  He test-drove all of the 2008 themes with Deval Patrick in Massachusetts in 2007, so he knew it would all work.

All Obama had to do was make the speeches and trot out Michelle and the girls.  Ax told him not to worry, Valerie Jarrett would be the one actually running everything while he and Michelle got the swag.

But the missing GDP - that's where I had them! They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond a shadow of doubt, with geometric logic, that a duplicate key to the economy did exist, and I'd have produced that key if they hadn't pulled me out of office.

79 Neither party should want to win 2012.  Whichever party wins the White House in 2012 is in for a world of hurt.  It's going to be a HARD time.  The final year (2016) is going to see an explosion of people qualifying for Social Security, too, and it is just about too late to deal with that.

If NYC still had a mayor, that $600K the Zucconistas have in the bank would have a lien on it to pay back the city. City auditors would also ask how a part time tattoo artist got "his own money" to stay in a $700 per night hotel room and if that's a violation of tax exemptions.

President Obama has never been in a position where he has been seriously evaluated on something that he has produced. The fact that the entire country is evaluating him now and deciding that he's a failure must be quite a shock to him.

And, since Democrats controled Congress for most of his term, he has no one to blame except the American people. Thus, we're lazy. He proved us with the tools, we just weren't up to the task.

95 I think it is likely the SCOAMF has had an epiphany.  From being in the position of believing that he and his ilk were finally those who were the one's they had been waiting for - those finally smart enough to successfully implement socialism, he's seen that socialism fails for a very good reason - human nature.  He's seen that socialism and its variants, has been the reason for the mess the west finds itself in.
He also sees that it really isn't all that bad being a one percenter, no matter how many backs of the 99% he has to stand on to be there.

How revealing reality must be to those who see it finally for the first time.

#96 Agreed!  All his life he has been graded on simply Being Barack Obama and given straight As for that.  Sucks for him that Presidenting requires actual work and skill.

I think these cocksuckers also really expected Republicans to roll over and play dead when they came to town.  Their single biggest mistake was probably getting Arlen Specter to switch parties.  As a Republican, Specter had the ability to swing the Maine sisters and maybe another one or two Senators to go along with him and buy into Obama's agenda and make it "bipartisan."  The Obamaites through they would get 65-70 votes for everything.  But after Specter went, none of the other RINOs would go out on a limb like he would.  Mitch McConnell grew a pair and got all the Republicans saying No.

This pretty much totally flummoxed the Obamaites and they have been floundering ever since.

Yeah, I have considered that a possibility too.  My own theory on that is that after 2004 Howard Dean knew that Democrats had zero chance of winning in 2008 with Hillary running as an anointed queen.  Too much of the country hated her and thought she was a liberal feminist idologue.  I think he ginned up Obama's candidacy with the aim of giving Hillary an opponent on the Left to make her look more moderate in the general election.  Axelrod was only too happy to help, though I do think he was aiming for 2012 as Obama's best shot at winning the presidency.

For starters, he would have gone after Card Check when he had the votes in the Senate to pass it.  He would have done some serious damage to the big banks and maybe even nationalized them; at a minimum figured out a way to have a couple of show trials and throw Ken Lewis in jail.  He would have gone after a single-payer health care bill.

You know, they tried to keep OFA going as Organizing For America, but it fizzled.  They read their own press notices too blindly and didn't realize that all those young people voted for Obama and signed up for OFA and all the Web jazz just to be hip, there was no way they were going to take to the streets afterward and actually do anything to help him.  They are still the lazy, self-centered asses they were before the election.

153 What sort of "scandalous" thing could there be about Dick Soetero? Perhaps that weekend post about Dick being queer as a three-dollar bill. Well, maybe not a toilet trader fond of glory holes, but a diffident bisexual. It is quite strange that there are so few close friends or ex-lovers out of Barry's past, at least any we know about. The bootlicking media kept John Edwards' philandering out of view for years, and he was just a white candy-ass lawyer. Imagine the "moral" pressure to keep quiet about Dick's past sexual behavior. Or, possibly, he's a guy who is so narcissistic that he prefers far and away to have sex with himself over with anyone else. Perhaps his two kids were the result of "mercy" lovemaking. I denounce myself.

As for me, I love what Pat Caddell is doing.  He may actually have these fantasies of President Hillary, but what he's really doing is planting that seed of doubt in the minds of liberals: "You have a chance to win, but not with Obama.  And even if he does win, it will be such an epic disaster that the country/party will be lost forever.  If you just throw him overboard, it will be all better.

I'm not entirely sure on that.  If he decided not to run, the word would go out far and wide that he just couldn't succeed because of his race....ie. the Rethuglicans are so racist, they did everything they could to hold him back.  Blacks could possibly still come out and vote en masse to stick it to the white man (who, in their minds, are the R's).  Punish the R's, as it were, for forcing this innocent and brilliant black man with the nice crease to abdicate.

Nah, he wants to win but he can't stand that the American people don't fawn all over him like they did three years ago. It grates on him. Another problems is that left wing theory is his religion, but unfortunately his religion has been and continues to be proven as demonstrably false and he can't accept this. In order for him to cope he must think that it's not that his theory is inadequate, it's the American people who are inadequate.

If he loses the election he will follow int he same path as Jimmy Carter, blaming America for his failures and sucking up to dictators worldwide.

If he wins the election those who opposed him will have hell to pay.

I don't buy the idea that he knows this at all. I think he believes he can circumvent the automatic budget cuts or finesse them so they apply only to defense. I also think he believes the GOP could lose the House, in which case a reelected Obama would have a blank check. The size of the debt doesn't matter to him at all. Given the chance, he will raise the debt to 100% of GDP or even higher, and let his successor take the heat for the consequences. He knows the history books, mostly written by liberals, will treat him kindly no matter what he does.

184 The mess won't be straightened out in the next Presidential term, so whoever beats Obama will be a one-termer.  It's just too much to get done quickly enough to turn the economy around in four years.

It might be possible if we lived in a vacuum, but the rest of the world has its own problems which are only now becoming apparent.  China is experiencing a slowdown in factory orders and a sharp decline in real estate transactions.  Given the ChiComs' long history of putting a shiny, happy face on even the worst news, it is fair to assume it is worse than it appears.

Europe is beyond salvage, period.  Major banks are under water on sovereign debt which will never be repaid.  The currency and the EU itself are effectively doomed, the only question is one of timing.

Those huge markets mean that our exports won't be able to lead us out of slow growth as they have out of every downturn for over thirty years.  There is no market.

Fortunately, India and South and Central America aren't having major problems, and are experiencing relatively healthy growth, but there just isn't enough demand there to lift a huge economy like ours.

We still have to get rid of Obama, or the necessary steps will not be taken and the situation will continue to deteriorate.  We must bite the bullet to get ourselves straight, and this will not be possible with Democrats holding any significant power.  And if we allow him another four years of lifetime judicial appointments, the Affirmative Action President will be infecting our polity and damaging our country indirectly for thirty years or more.

Posted by: Adjoran at November 28, 2011 09:46 AM (VfmLu)

185 #185 Liberals don't believe the total debt matters at all.  Some of them used to care about all the money in the federal budget going toward interest on the debt, but somehow that has become a non-issue.  All that matters to them is spending, spending, and more spending, and not touching entitlements, ever.

He seriously loves the title of POTUS.  It was obvious when his campaign invented that mock presidential seal for him and then invented the "Office of the President-Elect" after the election.  Even when he met with the House GOP bnefopre the Obamacare voting started, he had to have a nameplate on the table that said "President Barack Obama."  I'll bet he has a desk drawer full of those signs.  He is like a 14-year-old who ran for 9th grade class president.  I'm sure he looks at himself every stinking day in the mirror and says "President. I don't pretend to know what he will do specifically, but studying pathological narcissists is my passion, and one thing I can guarantee:  there is nobody, nobody, from Michelle on down, that he won't throw under his bus--consciously--if he feels it will benefit himself.

199 Unless something changes Obama will win reelection next November. As miserable as he has been and is as POTUS, the GOP candidates are uninspiring enough that they cannot win sufficient Independent votes to overcome the inertia of incumbent Obama. Yet, he also knows that he will not be able to institute any of his "dreams" for America, and by election time his signature piece of legislation may well be on the scrap heap. So why run at all?

Well, what the f*ck else is he going to do? If he suffers through another term he can then make millions on the ex-POTUS speaking tour circuit (he's the first black POTUS you know), even if he accomplishes nothing at all. He will be able to play lots of golf, for free, and travel the world and nation as he sees fit.

I strongly suspect he is missing the ambition gene that would lead men like Bill Clinton and GW to off themselves were they to find themselves in similar circumstances. In other words, he's content to be a ne'er do well.

If this only were true.
His "signature piece of legislation" - ObamaCare will survive if he's reelected and that would be worth it all by itself.
Throw in a probable Supreme Court Justice nomination and the 5-4 advantage we have goes to 4-5:  Strike the First and Second amendments.
