— Ace Reuters can't help from wistfully revisiting 2008, picturing Obama with a golden halo.
"And to that effect, I hereby propose to the General Secretary a series of plagues for Egypt,
beginning, as your briefing materials show, with frogs...
Absolutely shameless.
Gibbs, meanwhile, clarified that Obama did in fact intend to demand that Mubarak begin the process of transferring power now...
Last night, Obama issued a brief public statement that included just one line about a prospective deadline for Mubarak's exit from power: "My belief is that an orderly transition must be meaningful, must be peaceful and it must begin now," Obama said. But White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was more explicit Wednesday.
"'Now' means 'yesterday,'" Gibbs explained. "When we said 'now,' we meant 'yesterday'... that's what the people of Egypt want to see," Gibbs said, adding that a process that begins one week, one month, or many months from now won't suffice.
This is the sort of statement that makes sense if you are 100% certain the dictator is on his way out and want to get in good with the incoming, inevitable new regime.
But how can they be that certain?
At HotAir, reports that plainsclothes secret police bully boys are breaking heads, and in some cases, that seems to mean army officers pretending to be "pro-stability" civilians.
There is a pretty good chance that the army winds up siding with Mubarak and crushing the resistance, and then Mubarak installs a puppet replacement as president. That may not be the most likely scenario but I can't see how it's not a plausible one.
What's Obama going to say to Mubarak if that should come to pass?
I guess I have a different take than Drew... I'm having trouble understanding why this guy supported Ahmedinejad throughout the Iranian uprising (oh, after the regime murdered some young girls, they did bother themselves to urge "restraint") but now is so forward-leaning on Egypt.
It seems like he's trying to contrive a foreign policy public relations "win" he can take to the American people in 2012. So he can say, "Hey, I was the guy who called for Mubarak to be deposed when it was clear he would probably be deposed, you're welcome," and we're supposed to be grateful.
But it's not as if we were all super-invested in seeing Mubarak deposed.

I'm thinking it's more a matter of Obama not wanting another Tienanmen massacre happening on his watch, live on CNN (via the Al-Jazeera feed). It's not so much that he cares about the Egyptian people, but he knows how badly a bloodbath would play to the American public: it'd make Obama look pretty weak and helpless.

Question becomes, how does this look to the rest of the world.
Muby was OUR guy, and we are now throwing him to the wolves, and essentialy ORDERING him to stand down.
1. Betraying a longtime ally in the War on Terror.
2. Telling a foreign FREINDLY government, what to do, and when to do it.
Today it is not GITMO which is recruiting Islamist terrorists... its Obama prooving that everything they say about us being dishonorable and controlling, is true.

They can't be certain, but depending on how persuasive we are with the military, it might not be Mubarak's decision. The military knows that Mubarak is on his way out soon or very fucking soon. With proper nudging from the US (including holding our military aid over their heads), they might just decide to have a little talk with Mubarak. There have been reports of high level talks with Egyptian generals.
If Mubarak loses the support of the military, he's toast- and maybe literally.

"'Now' means 'yesterday,'" Gibbs explained. "When we said
'now,' we meant 'yesterday'... that's what the people of Egypt want to
see," Gibbs said ...
Since when did the US government work on the idea of what "the people of Egypt want"? They've been intentionally doing stuff that the People of America do not want, but now they're all concerned about the Egyptians.
And, now that "now" means "yesterday", what does "then" mean to these America-haters?

They're not certain about anything. This administration just says whatever the hell it wants. This would only be the 183rd time that they made such a bold statement and had it blow up in their faces (our face, really, since they are crapping all over the US when they do this).
Again, Barky doesn't care how foolish or stupid he looks, because it just reflects badly on the Office of the Presidency, which is one of his major aims.

I am pulling hard for Mubarak to survive this coup by the Nobel boys, Obama and ElBaradei
Mubarak is on his way out anyways. He's 82, has health problems, and has already said he's not running in Sept. Even if he maintains power short-term, we're back to square one 6 months from now. Might as well have a role in who replaces him now instead of facing the prospect of ElBaradei or the MB make that choice later.

I think it might be Lee "Strongest Horse" Smith who posted it just recently on The Weekly Standard's site, but there's speculation that the Egyptian army has allowed the pro-Mubarak groups to go full retard *precisely* in order to have the pretext to vigorously restore order and clamp down on the street.
Not quite in a Tienanmen way -- a massacre would surely backfire on the army and put it at odds with the broad mass of people, which apparently the army doesn't want.
Just... vigorously.
With the Mubarak family sent packing and an interim junta put in charge that initiates reforms, an acceptable electoral process, and a careful handling of the Muslim Brotherhood.
I don't trust Obama to handle his side of things in an instinctively adept (and non-ideological) manner, but it's just possible that he's being guided towards and through the correct and necessary steps by the advisory group he brought in the other day (includes Robert Kagan and Elliot Abrams).

In the UK Telegraph, Richard Spencer reports from Cairo:
An avoidable and shameful disaster is taking place in Cairo tonight. Whether by accident or design – the latter seems more likely – President Hosni Mubarak has created a caged arena full of hate for a final confrontation.
As I write, the anti-regime protesters have been presented with an ultimatum to leave Tahrir Square but no opportunity to do so, given that they are surrounded by club-wielding hoodlums at all exits.
He asks:
Can even Hosni Mubarak have been so incompetent as to have created the scene before us by accident, vacillating when he should have been determined and showing obstinacy when compromise was called for? Thus he has encouraged the protesters and hardliners simultaneously, until only force will choose the victor.
Or has he lured the protesters into a trap for one last display of his authority?
Sounds more like a trap to me. Mubarak gave his speech promising not to run for reelection; when the protesters kept up their calls for his immediate resignation, he sprang the trap.

I suspect it's because the Egyptian army doesn't want to lose too much credibility with the people or the US. Instead of being seen cracking down hard themselves against the protesters, they instead just allow the pro-Mubarak "protesters" to do it for them.
Even if they're viewed as complicit, they can fall back on the excuse that they're just staying neutral.

Every US President should say the opposite of what they want to happen.
If the rioters want Mubarak gone, and we want Mubarak to stay, we should side with the rioters.
If the rioters want Mubarak gone, and we want Mubarak gone, we should stand publicly with Mubarak.
The people are not going to like us either way - use that to our advantage.

Let us sing to Lord Cthuhlu
Don't let Lovecraft try to fool you
Or the Elder Gods WILL rule you

Even Cthulhu's not his master

We will worship Great Cthulhu,
We will worship Great Cthulhu,
And we'll feed him Mr. Sulu
'Cause that's good enough for me!
We will sacrifice to Yuggoth
We will sacrifice to Yuggoth
Burn a candle for Yog-Soggoth
And the Goat With a Thousand Young
Well it's good enough for Hast*r
He's a mighty kinky master
When you pray he goes much faster
And that's good enough for me!
And for those who follow Cthulhu
We have really got a lulu:
Drop a bomb on Honolulu!
'Cause that's good enough for me!

You and me and Mr. Sulu
Howling like a drunken Zulu

The key is what color is Obama's hair today. It's like tea leaves.
In trying to understand what is happening in Egypt, we all seem to be presented with a lot of "false choices", in terms of "What Do We Do?"
1. Obama is inherently sympathetic to the Third World /non-aligned point of view. He has implied that on numerous occasions. And this is usually not good for those muddled Third Worlders who have to live with the results, and not good for the US. Usually good for the opportunistic authoritarians. Like the MB.
2. He reflexively rejects to notions of "Real Politik" as to what is in our national interest in what happens in Egypt. If it actually makes the US look bad in retrospect, he will probably do it.
3. He does want the consequences to reflect favorably on HIM, because, he is just so vain. He probably thinks this revolution is about him, he's so vain...
4. Lastly, whoever thinks they can manage the situation is riding the whirlwind, literally. Can anyone really divine the wishes of the majority ~84 million Egyptians, who have NEVER known what a popularly elected government looks like? After the Red October of Russia in 1917, it took the Reds 5 years of bloody civil war to consolidate their "revolution" (read-dictatorship) over the Whites and anyone else. And more years after that purging any dangerous "counter-revolutionaries".
It only looks bloody on the surface. A real revolution would be really bloody, and Anderson Cooper's silly mug won't be there with a camera to cover it.
