DOOM!...just like Mom used to make.
— Monty

Via Insty comes this LAT op-ed (yeah, I know, bear with me) about the latest liberal idea for making the economy more "fair": ending Roth IRA's. I won't sport with your intelligence by getting into the argument -- it's profoundly dumb -- but it does provide yet another example of the liberal belief that all money belongs to the government by default; the only question is how much they let you keep. Thus the war on "the rich". (And the definition of "rich" keeps sliding downward, have you noticed? Pretty soon that piss-smelling bum down by the bus-stop will be considered "rich" because he has an actual la-di-dah belt to hold up his pants rather than a frayed length of clothesline like the rest of us.)

The end times are surely upon us - the donks pretend to have budget-cutting religion. If you want to know if the Tea Party had any impact at all on the Democrats, wonder no longer. It wonÂ’t make any difference that matters, of course; Democrats exist to tax and spend. ItÂ’s what they do. But the cutters have won the rhetorical war -- weÂ’ll see how far it gets us in the actual process of living within our means as a nation. Do we dare to look on that far shore?

And about that budget fight we just went through? ItÂ’s only the preliminary match. The title card fight is yet to come.

UK and the Netherlands to Iceland: Give us our money! Iceland: What money?

The SS/Medicare impasse is receiving a lot more attention now than even last year, but it’s still mainly of the “soul-searching” variety rather than the “here are the hard cold facts” variety. I expect the “Republicans want to kill grandma!” rhetoric to become pervasive as the 2012 campaign season builds up a bigger head of steam. I also expect the AARP to become fully engaged in the fear-mongering among the rocker-jockey set.

Can’t sell your house now that you’re badly underwater on your mortgage? That plot of land you bought back in ‘08 more of a drain on your pocketbook than you’d anticipated? No worries! The Chinese will buy your real estate. And will pay top dollar!

Speaking of the Chinese -- itÂ’s like Bizarro world or something when the Chinese post a trade deficit for the first time in seven years. How could this happen? Commodity prices, kids -- food, fuel, and raw materials. Inflation is going through China like a honey badger through a beehive.

Veronique de Rugy puts us some f’in knowledge on spending cuts, myths versus facts. This goes to the heart of the “tax vs spend” war between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats believe, with religious fervor, that taxes must be raised to meet spending needs -- because to them, every penny of spending is necessary and vital. All money belongs to the government by default; the only question is how much they allow the peasants to keep. (See the Roth IRA story above.) In the land of the Democrats, there is never any fat; any cut immediately hits muscle and bone.

Though in fairness the GOP has an equally intractable problem: they love big government just as much as the Democrats, but they donÂ’t like taxing people to pay for it.

ECB rate hikes could admister the coup de grace to Ireland, Portugal, Greece, and even Spain. I donÂ’t know that a rate-hike will do more than hasten the inevitable, really -- what else can the PIGS do at this point but default? The citizens wonÂ’t stand for the kind of austerity that would be required to pay off the bond-holders -- especially given that those bondholders are primarily French and German banks (as well as the ECB). It seems to be a basic question of math: there is no possible way that these countries can pay off the debt they owe. Yet the merest thought of the breakup of the Eurozone gives the unelected Eurocrats a bad case of the vapors; they refuse to even consider the possibility -- in public, anyway. Yet reality is asserting itself, as it always does.

How did Trump get to be so popular in certain political circles? HereÂ’s my take: when all we have to choose from are fools, ceteris paribus, Americans tend to choose the most entertaining fool.

Congressman Paul Ryan on Meet the Press. You can tell he has the Democrats scared because theyÂ’re trying to do two things at once: make him look like an extremist nutcase; and at the same time say the same things heÂ’s saying, only with Democrat frosting on it.

And at last -- when the DOOM! finally arrives; when the wailing and groaning and gnashing of teeth drowns everything else out; when the living envy the dead; we will have one last miserable truth hammered home: itÂ’s all our fault.

[UPDATE 1]: Let's check in with VDH and see if Callie is still boned. ...yeah, still boned.

[UPDATE 2]: Dylan plays China, allows the ChiComs to dictate his playlist. Can't have those hippies getting the peasants all riled up, now can we?

[UPDATE 3]: The government's motto is not E Pluribus Unum; it's Over-promise and Under-deliver.

[UPDATE 4]: Eli Lehrer: "Pensions aren't the problem!" Tom Cross, Illinois House Minority Leader: "Au contraire, mon frère!"
"Your misery amuses me, mortal!"

Cat...or bat?

I'm surprised Monty bothered with a DOOM thread today. I'm all DOOMED out from the awesome Shutdown Crisis cum Winning Deal TM kabuki this weekend.  Faux News totally shot its collective wad this weekend, hyping the Shutdown all week, then with the Crisis Countdown Friday night, followed by the  Celebratory Reading of Victory Talking Points Saturday and Sunday. They must be hung over this morning.

9 The Tea Party did a very smart thing last year: They kicked out a few independents who didnÂ’t support them politically.

Now wait a minute. For the first year of Obama, we heard an unending chorus of "establishment Republicans" and Democrats giving the Republican party lots of advise on how they needed to be more like Democrats in order to win in Washington.

Now here is proof-positive that all of that advise was crap.

16 What stuns me about the stupidity of our overlords is that they don't understand even the most basic laws of economics. But hopefully this will be the impetus for a Republican landslide in 2012.

Poor people, at least in the beginning of an inflationary cycle, are hurt more than the wealthy. Unless Obama (pbuh) indexes everything to inflation, and increases the bribe transfer payments often (once/month), his captive voters will get angry. Maybe they won't be so energized to vote for the same old shit. But some of them aren't sucking on the government teat as much, and they will get even more screwed, because private sector salaries will lag too.

17 Yes the idiots want to talk about SS cuts now after the long fake fight over a non-existent cut in spending. From the link:

WASHINGTON, April 7 (Reuters) - In 1983, a civil servant named Robert Ball worked a political miracle: he convinced Republican Ronald Reagan to raise taxes and Democrat Tip O'Neill to accept trims to Social Security.

That was the second "fix" for SS. And like the first fix the Dems turned around and spent every nickle of the fix plus some. The Repubs just folded to avoid a fake shutdown over a fake cut and called it a victory.

Now do we actually think they are going to fix SS again?

The real fight will occur when you and your neighbors are fighting over who will get to eat the stray dog wandering through your block.

19 EC: That's why the op-ed is so dumb. You do pay taxes on your Roth contributions; you just pay them up front rather than on the back-end. The writer's main objection is that you don't pay taxes on capital gains when you withdraw on retirement -- which of course in his mind is tantamount to stealing bread from the mouths of starving children, or something.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo (NJConservative) at April 11, 2011 05:27 AM (LH6ir)

21 And like the first fix the Dems turned around and spent every nickle of the fix plus some. That's the main defect of any tax-increase to "fix" SS/Medicare. These are "pay as you go" programs, which means that any additional revenue collected via taxation would not go to pay down debt, but would simply be immediately spent and only add to the future shortfalls. A tax-increase, in short, would make the problem worse at all levels -- increasing spending now without doing a thing to improve solvency in the longer term.

27 Laurent Gbagbo (must be a D. because he won't leave office even though he lost an election, Ivory Coast), has apparently been captured by French Special Forces, who are suddenly the world's greatest fighting force (in the sense that their government allows them to, you know, actually fight their enemies), and handed over to the "rebels" (who for some reason are called such despite representing the side that won the election).

The rebels will either kill Gbagbo, put him on trial for crimes against the nation, or hand him over to the much-feared international community, where he will serve house arrest in the south of France drinking wine and watching porn.

28 Indeed it was, and indeed that is where my family has habitually invested -- but liquidating Roth's was something you just knew was going to come up over a year ago.  At least that's when my family started pulling their money out of them.

Anyone who didn't think that this administration would make it so the lower/middle income bracket would be utterly dependent upon government for anything (and thus the scapegoats of the upper middle and the somewhat wealthy, who will see them as "parasites") should have read their history a bit more closely.

This is how you develop a caste society from what once was the whole of the middle class, and have them at each other's throats all the time...and thus much more easily manipulated.

44 Check out this story on the inevitable gigantic housing bubble bursting The Chinese are notoriously frugal savers (they have to be since they don't have a welfare-state like we do). But there as here there is an almost magical belief that real-estate -- land -- is a magical engine of prosperity somehow. You have people investing their savings in housing projects they can't even afford to live in themselves. There are entire "ghost cities" in China full of brand-new and completely empty buildings. Block after block, mile after mile. It's like the huge subdivisions here that remain empty even years after the bubble popped -- everyone realizes that the loss on the investment has to be taken by somebody, but no one wants to step up and take the hit. And for the Chinese it's even worse because the secretive ChiCom government can, by fiat, hide a lot of shitty loans and non-performant assets from the international investing community.

I also read a news report on-line in which the reporter was shocked to discover that food prices are going up and package sizes getting smaller.  However, this dipshit just couldn't make the connection between increased energy prices resulting in increased production costs.  A quick scan of the comments showed that the majority of the imbeciles blamed Wall Street.  The stupidity of some of my fellow citizens fills me with dispare, sometimes.  I guess this leaves more prey wandering the Wasteland, looking for an up-side on this.

56 So other than calling for tax hikes and bashing Republicans as being evil, I wonder what Obama is going to say in this speech of his. Politico has a new article about his strategy for discussing health care costs, which is to borrow from Erskine-Bowles. Says David Nather, "President Barack Obama is promising to lay out his long-awaited ideas on how to restrain Medicare and Medicaid spending this week — just in time to take the spotlight away from Paul Ryan". So the day before the House takes-up the budget bill, he's going to suddenly endorse Erskine-Bowles just to help him win the election. What leadership.

I thought the Roth IRA was similar to the old IRA, in that if you had a tax deferred IRA at work you were not eligible for the IRA at all.

Posted by: Vic at April 11, 2011 06:09 AM (M9Ie6)

64 So what is the difference between a "Obamized Roth" IRA with taxes at both ends and regular investment account. As far as i can see, its only the extra regulations and reduced choices many IRAs offer.

If you are only making $20 - 35,000 per year, the fact that you don't pay taxes into a traditional IRA was never that attractive - you just don't save that much on taxes if you sock a thousand bucks away.

If the left thinks this means we'll be opening traditional IRAs now, or passively accepting a government edict to cash out our Roths, pay the taxes, and then roll over the money into a traditional IRA, they really must be on crack. You'll see a rush of small IRAs cashing out and moving to regular investment accounts, where you have more freedom to invest in a larger array of stocks, funds, etc.

Which makes me think this is all a bright idea being floated by an unholy alliance investment houses, leftist money-grabbers and whackjob "economists."

We'll all be storing our spending money under our mattresses and buying gold and silver and physical objects like ammo and food to keep these fools out of our pockets if they have any success with their plans.

68 The idea of tax deferred 401K or a tax deferred IRA has always been that you would not pay taxes on the money until after you retired and were theoretically in a "lower tax bracket".

The problem though has been that with inflation and it being only partially offset by indexing the tax tables due to government shenanigans, you wind up not being in a lower bracket at retirement (assuming you have actually set aside enough money to retire).

As I built my own retirement assets I began to see that right away and started sticking money into non-tax deferred accounts/stocks.

69 I thought the Roth IRA was similar to the old IRA, in that if you had a tax deferred IRA at work you were not eligible for the IRA at all. Nope. That might have been true of the traditional IRA, but a Roth doesn't have that restriction. That's why I've got both: a 403(b) *and* a Roth. The 403(b) is tax-deferred; the Roth isn't. Also, the Roth allows me a far more flexible investing profile than the 403(b) does -- I actually have some of my precious-metals stuff in my Roth. I bought physical gold, and deposited it in a trust that is held by my Roth IRA fund. There are income caps, as someone else said already. For me, a single guy, it's $120K per year.

71 Then, too, Roths could be a drag on the U.S. economy. Since no withdrawals are required, assets can lie idle indefinitely.

What?

God, liberals are stupid. They think the only positive outcome of investment is to create a taxable profit?

The assets aren't lying idle. These are investments (the Roth IRA is just the vehicle) that provide working capital to businesses.

Here's something that the clowns on the left never consider. If no one had "extra" assets lying around, we'd all live in mud houses at subsistence level.

You need someone to provide the capital in order to invest and grow.

This is simple enough that a fifth grader could understand it, but a leftist? No. Too complicated.

90 Sage advice from advocates of the moron lifestyle

Sometime this year, we taxpayers will again receive another 'Economic Stimulus' payment.
This is indeed a very exciting program,  and I'll explain it by using a Q & A format:
Q. What is an 'Economic Stimulus' payment?
A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.
Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.
Q.  So the government is giving me back my own money ?
A.  Only a smidgen of it.
Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a  high-definition TV set,  thus stimulating the economy.
Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ?
A. Shut up.
Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.S. economy by  spending your stimulus check wisely:
If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will  go to China or Sri Lanka .
If you spend it on gasoline,  your money will go to the  Arabs.
If you purchase a computer,  it will go to India , Taiwan or  China.
If you purchase fruit and vegetables,  it will go to Mexico ,  Honduras and Guatemala .
If you buy an efficient  car,  it will go to Japan or Korea .
If  you purchase useless stuff,  it will go to Taiwan .
If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock,  it will go  to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.
Instead,  keep the money in America by:
Spending it at yard sales,  or
Going to ball games,  or
Spending it on prostitutes,  or
Beer or
Tattoos.
(These are the only American businesses still operating in the US )
Conclusion:
Go to a ball game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard  sale and drink beer all day !

No need to thank me, I'm just glad I could be of help.

92 Ok, financial wizards, what say you about an after-tax,  set of whole life insurance plans that at age 65 pays a death benefit (~ 2M), and will have a cash value that allows a monthly payout of ~4K indefinitely.  If I croak before 65; current cash value plus a death benefit of about ~1M (slowly increasing) is paid out to family trust.  If inflation goes nuts, then the cash value should accumulate faster - but will it keep pace (it is invested in basket index funds,e tc.)

My own little pension; I didn't like the SEP options, assuming of course the black swan doesn't crap on my head - I have other plans for that.

With a deployment to a "combat area" or whatever the exact term is for "dangerous place so we don't tax you", I think putting money into a Roth makes much more sense than a traditional IRA.

107 114 The GOP refuses to ever say that the Indonesian is a bald-faced liar (and the one time Joe WIlson said it, the GOP jumped all over him and he collapsed like a wet rag) so the Indonesian is given free license to conitnue lying.  It doesn't matter what the INdonesian says ... he can just turn around and claim the opposite the next day and our retarded, cowardly GOP will let it pass right by without a comment.

I'm wondering whether things might be different this time. To me, it depends on how many of them are willing to pretend they actually care about entitlement reform and cutting spending. I do think a limited number of them actually care, but the pretenders are prone to bolting at the 1st sign of trouble. Well, the last time the GOP as a whole pointed out that the President was a bald-faced liar, his popularity improved dramatically(see also: Clinton, William J.).  Now, correlation is not causation, but I can see why they might be a little gun-shy.

On the other hand, you're right- these lies are not the "I did not have sex with that woman," lies that can be spun into "consenting adults."  Obama's lies are issues of grave concern to the Nation.

123 I'm aware of most of the options, and for discussion purposes would be interested in what you guys think. Anyone? Much depends on your style and quality of life. Do you travel a lot? Do you have have any outstanding debt? Do you own your home? Do you have lots of miscellaneous "expenses" that aren't recurring? (I.e., do you "help out" your children or grandchildren on a regular basis?) And what are your goals going forward? How long do you (realistically) expect to live? It helps to create a spreadsheet (or have an advisor help you create one) and just run various scenarios through it to come up with a basic monthly budget number. Then you figure out your asset and investment mix to help you hit that number. Also: you need to think about your legacy. What do you want to leave to your family after you've crossed the Great Divide? This has tax implications for them, so think carefully about it. Estate-planning is vital -- if you don't have a will, get one made posthaste. Remember: your wealth is a means to an end, not an end in itself. It's just as bad to die with a bunch of unused wealth just sitting around as it is to die broke, in my opinion.

At his public school, Little Village Academy on Chicago's West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria.

The bad news is of course is more stupid overbearing govt, the good news is the more crap like this they do, the closer we get to vouchers.

137 On "too much DOOM!": I venerate Mark Steyn as my master, and he's been doing DOOM! for a lot longer than I have. He uses humor to leaven the disastrous news, as I try to do -- because sometimes, man, you gotta laugh to keep from crying. If you really want down-in-the-dumps DOOM-mongering, head on over to ZeroHedge or MarketTicker. My posts will seem like fairy-glitter and rainbows in comparison. On a related note: I've been thinking of doing a "DOOM 101" series for the Morons to explain some of the basic economics principles in more plain language. I often throw terms like "fiat currency" and "broken-window fallacy" out there and just assume that people know what I mean, but maybe not. You tell me, folks: would you enjoy a series of "Professor Monty's Econ 101" from DOOM U? If not, what else would you like to see?

159 Regarding Update 3, it struck me long ago that having the government do something just means that people will be pissed at the government.

I mean, if your insurance company pisses you off, what do you do? Change to another insurance company. When the government is your insurance company, all you can do is simmer and plot revolution in the coffeehouses.

The way to ensure that people like the government is to make certain it doesn't do very much.

Why do Democrat politicians want people to hate the government?

Would be good, esp. if you always included a link to it or something so we could look up definitions and such.

I've mentioned before, I think in a book thread, that I'm still trying to learn more about personal finance issues. Like beyond the basics of "should I re-finance"; not just understanding points, but comparing how much of a dent you are making in the principal, for example. Or playing out different scenarios to see if a Roth IRA is a good idea.

Don't know if there are enough military folk for specific issues, but would love to see something aimed slightly higher than the usual "you should pay your bills on time" level stuff aimed at military families.

164 Regarding the Euro, it never fails to amaze me that not even the slimmest understanding of human nature informed the decision for all these countries to abandon the freedom to set their own monetary policies. I understand the psychology behind it - like so many things European, it stemmed from jealousy, fear and hatred of the United States, which only intensified since the end of the Cold War, when the U.S. became the sole world superpower and the fiction that NATO was necessary became obvious. Resentful of American hegemony, yet envious of its wealth and influence, the Europeans did the only thing they could think of to show up the U.S. on the world stage - they banded together. On its face, totally understandable and rational in its own way. HOWEVER. The devil is always in the details. Suppose I want to show up my rich neighbor. His house is bigger, his lawn is greener, his wife's breasts are fuller, and I am haunted by the sight of his uniformed staff buffing his Bentley to an eye-watering shine with the pelts of freshly-clubbed baby harp seals. Pelts which they use once and then discard. Meanwhile, I'm hosing bits of roadkill out of the grill of my 1979 Le Car. Suddenly, inspiration strikes! I need to team up with some other people! I'll never outearn my rich neighbor on my own, but with enough of us teaming up, Together We'll Thrive! Fortunately, a group of 30 Mexicans just started squatting in the vacant house down the street. I've gone to my bank and added all of them to my checking account. With 31 of us combining our resources, we'll be on lighting $50 cigars with $100 bills in no time! OK, maybe that wasn't such a great idea. It turns out that every time I made a deposit, those 30 Mexicans made a withdrawal. 0maybe I need more partners. Oh, look! Some Haitians!

Finally endorsing some of the ideas from Bowles-Simpson while decrying Republicans as radicals is hardly presidential. If he was serious about this issue, he would have endorsed the commission's  findings in December or in his 2012 budget. No-- this is all about his reelection campaign, he's playing catch-up, and his plan is to show that he's the moderate one because the Republicans are "extreme". 170 Re: China trade deficit.

This does not mean what people think it means.  People have the mistaken belief that a trade deficit is a sign of weakness, it isn't.  It means two things:

1.  China, for the first time, is affluent enough to purchase more than it produces.
2.  China is experiencing a net investment surplus.  They are seeing a net inflow of capital and investment that is equal to the amount of the trade deficit.  Likely they have seen a reduction in their savings rate with people purchasing more goods and services.

The only time a country runs a trade surplus is when they are in hard times except for special circumstances such as the US was in post WWII where we were practically the only major industrial manufacturing economy on the planet that hadn't been destroyed by war.

A trade surplus means "your people are poor and can not afford to buy all that they produce".

A trade deficit means "your people are able to to purchase more than they produce".

There are some very good articles on exactly what trade deficits mean over at Cato.  I suggest you read them.

YEAH, as soon as anything has "corporate" or "government" backing it seems to go down the drain.  The "backer" soon becomes the "overseer" and the list of the "not alloweds" becomes way longer than the list of "alloweds".  Which may explain why Ace remains independent and Beck is "leaving" fox.

For those digging up all your flowers: you can plant veggies, flowers, and herbs together -- it actually makes for a healthier garden, and a prettier one (and also a way to keep the neighborhood housing police off your butt).

Doom? Meh...sometimes it does get tedious as it isn't suprising at all.

Guns? Meh, they are handy and practical; I don't really get the obsession with them though.  I suppose it's like cars (another thing I don't really get the obsession for).

Ben, what I have found out  is my family does not have a tatse for artichokes (except me) but they do make a gorgeous flower from the un-eaten product.

so it's not all an ugly experience.

I enjoy artichokes, maybe if you pour melted butter on the artichoke heart you family will be more amenable.to eating them.

I think tomato plants are a good investment. either you buy them as seeds for 1-2 dollars a package, or buy partially grown plants for 5-6 bucks. They each produce 40+ pounds of tomatoes, which would cost a fortune at grocery store.

I grow yellow and red tomatoes, bell peppers, spicy peppers, cukes and onions. I tried pumpkin, watermellon and grapes but I had terrible results last year.  I am not going to try them again, but instead try peas.

I do all of this in a 10x10 area. It makes so much food that I provide tomatoes to my immediate family living in the area and a select few nice neighbors.

I think it's a good investment and enjoyable.

Editorial column in today's Calgary Herald on California...even we've noticed it's boned!(emphasis mine)

"If it were constitutionally allowed, California would likely be bankrupt.

How did a state with the eighth largest GDP in the world, and an absolutely spectacular, resource-rich land mass larger than most countries, take such a mighty fall to wear the worst economy in the U. S.? It's a test tube of economic analysis that think-tanks are tripping over themselves to explain.

Here are the buzz words: liberal economics, draconian environmental policies, over-taxing corporations, no affordable housing, schools that score among the worst in the country.

The Golden State has become the textbook case for what not to do."

I often throw terms like "fiat currency" and "broken-window fallacy" out there and just assume that people know what I mean, but maybe not. You tell me, folks: would you enjoy a series of "Professor Monty's Econ 101" from DOOM U? If not, what else would you like to see?

You have no way of knowing if maybe trump isn't the face out in front of the crowd for a consortium of mega wealthy people who love their country and don't want to see it go down the drain, soros style.

In many ways I feel sorry for the dems.  When people are on the republican team or an independent they generally have moral scruples.  But if you are with the dems, and their ends justifies the means ideas, well then you can pretend to be in their court, sprinkle them with a little cash and all the while be playing for the other team.  And they wouldn't realize it until it was too late for them to do anything about it.
