The so-called "Super Comittee" will fail, and markets will crash....? Maybe. Congress has a long and sordid history of waiting until the last minute to pretend that they did something while actually just deferring the problem to a future Congress. At some point this game must end, of course. We shall see.
Every province in China is Greece.
Larry Lang, chair professor of Finance at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said in a lecture that he didn’t think was being recorded that the Chinese regime is in a serious economic crisis—on the brink of bankruptcy. In his memorable formulation: every province in China is Greece.Emphasis mine. And the emphasized part is why I’m inclined to believe it.
Europe already in recession...
...and itÂ’s likely to get worse before it gets better.
Detroit: the headsmanÂ’s axe falls in April.
Mayor Dave Bing and the City Council have said the solution lies in getting major concessions from reluctant labor unions and reducing the city's skyrocketing costs for retirees.
I predict that the unions will fight any cuts bitterly. Ultimately, and as always, itÂ’ll be the taxpayer who gets screwed -- in one way or another. And while this story is about Detroit, it could just as easily be about a thousand other towns and cities in this country.
Are we really lazy, as His Majesty intimates, or do our tax and regulation regimes drive businesses away?
The answer to increasing economic prosperity is not to figure out new ways to divide the pie; the answer is to make the whole pie bigger. But our current Emperor obviously is not keen on this idea; he prefers class warfare and a suffocating regulatory state. You'd think that after three years of abject failure he'd be open to some new ideas but...not so much.
Congress needs an insider-trading law. I was faintly surprised to discover that there wasn't one already. (Only "faintly" because the first imperative of lawmakers is to both protect and enrich themselves.)
Are you ready for a repeat of the 2008 meltdown? Take my advice: hope for the best but plan for the worst. Our government (and the Eurozone, and China, and...) has been using wishful-thinking as their operative plan ever since Obama took office, and we can see where that's gotten us. (On the other hand: this prediction is by the notorious Phil Angelides, who completely ignored the role Fannie and Freddie played in the 2008 crisis, so I'm not sure how concerned I should be.)
As the Eurozone falls apart in exactly the way many of us predicted more than a decade ago, Teh Krugman re-writes history to move the blame off of his beloved liberal welfare-state policies.
In his piece Mr Krugman also makes the astonishing claim that the doomed European Project was originally “cheered” by American conservatives but “questioned” by US liberals:I certainly was never a fan of the Euro project, and subsequent events have amply confirmed my skepticism. (This reminds me of that saying that success has a thousand fathers, but failure is always an orphan.)"The attempt to create a common European currency was one of those ideas that cut across the usual ideological lines. It was cheered on by American right-wingers, who saw it as the next best thing to a revived gold standard, and by Britain’s left, which saw it as a big step toward a social-democratic Europe. But it was opposed by British conservatives, who also saw it as a step toward a social-democratic Europe. And it was questioned by American liberals, who worried — rightly, I’d say (but then I would, wouldn’t I?) — about what would happen if countries couldn’t use monetary and fiscal policy to fight recessions."
I don’t recall “American right-wingers” cheering on the rise of the single currency, and the growth of a European superstate. Quite the opposite, in fact. British-style Euroscepticism has always been fashionable among US conservatives who have long admired Lady Thatcher’s views on Europe, but mocked and derided by the State Department and by the Left. American liberals in contrast have long been among the biggest supporters of the European Project. Witness the fawning Eurofederalism of the Obama administration as well as bastions of the ruling liberal elites such as The New York Times. Krugman is rewriting history now that the European model, beloved by East Coast liberals, is going down in flames.
Rhode Island's meltdown continues. Vanguard or outlier? We'll see. (Also, WRM is catching DOOM fee-vah: "Because of its small size, inbred political system and collusive relationships between irresponsible union and political officials, Rhode Island is reaching the end of the road faster than many other places — but Rhode Island and its cities are not alone on the highway to doom." My new DOOM-cult grows acolytes apace.)
UPDATE 1: Via AllenG: we can add Fort Worth to the members' waiting-list for the LOTB.
UPDATE 2: Crippled by debt, European economy has slowed almost to a stop.

On the up side, Fort Worth is fairly conservative, and they just elected a conservative Mayor- one who would rather let street-lamps be dead for two or three nights, instead of raising taxes and/or fees or taking on more debt. Maybe they'll get their fiscal house in order.

The "supercomittee" is a gimick. Yet another bad idea that hides all transparency and accountability from the American people.
Democrats can only waste money and raise taxes so they can waste more. The left pockets what they can ala Nancy Pelosi and John Kerry. The best way for the democrat machine to commit its crimes is to encourage the formation of job-sucking unions - the democrat's money filtering graft machine. Rince and repeat. How anyone can vote for these creeps is beyond me.

Yes, dum-dum, it really is.
And the fact that you believe otherwise is a prime reason that you don't really understand how the economy works.

Actually, no it doesn't. The Great Depression was a much worse catastrophe than the one we're in, and yet our economy has grown by many orders of magnitude since then. Our economic growth is not linear -- organic growth never is -- but it is constant. There is an upper limit governed by things like energy usage, raw materials, etc., but we are far, far from that point. If we collapse, it won't be due to a failure of the market-driven economic model; it'll be due to pure political fuckery.
Posted by: Monty at November 16, 2011 05:06 AM (/0a60)
I'm not sure why conservative politicians have such trouble articulating the case against public unions, but as a PSA of sorts here goes:
In a typical collective bargaining environment, the worker is deemed too powerless to effectively compete in individual negotiations against management and their lawyers, who in turn represent the monied interests of ownership; thus, the law permits unionization of workers so that they can be better represented against management through collective bargaining.
In the public union model, however, the workers (employees) instead cooperate with management (bureaucratic government officials who want ever-growing and therefore progressively better funded departments) to work against the interests of ownership (the taxpayers) and extract ever-larger amounts of money from public coffers.

I think it's been mentioned several times, but you can really go to the CDC website (I think) and they've got a list. You'll want things like potable water, non perishable foodstuffs (some people swear by MREs or whatever they're called today), some method to cook (a small pot and pan, some manner of generating heat), if you can get one, an emergency generator and plenty of fuel for it, and some way to generate light (lamps/lanterns, flashlights, whatever). For the inevitable societal collapse, you'll also want some method of self protection. If it can double as hunting gear, so much the better. I would also recommend the old versions of either (both) the Army Field Guide and the Boy Scout Handbook.

I'm not sure a failure of the sooper-dooper committee is such a big deal. Ultimately its failure will simply mean greater monitization of debt, and some inflation resulting from that. Stocks should go up, not down.
In terms of stock values, I would be more worried if the committee succeeded. Massive austerity measures will hit the economy hard. Frankly, while I believe we need a smaller government that does far fewer things, I'd rather see some inflation than a crash.

I disagree. Actual austerity measures, targeted at things like really reducing the size and scope of government, will free up capital that is currently tied up in things like compliance (with redundant and/or unnecessary regulation), and lobbying (why lobby when there isn't a department for what you want to do, anymore?) and lead to growth pretty quickly.
You might be right that the first thing to happen would be a contraction, but I suspect that would be very, very short lived.

I, too, have felt the mad temptation to build a survival bunker, but then when I calmed down and reflected on that idea I realized that it would be a fool's errand. It's a little like planning for nuclear war. If things really crashed hard, such that survival bunkers would be useful, it would be better to die in the opening phase of the disaster. An easier and more merciful contingency plan would be to simply practice pulling a shot gun trigger with your toe.

The problem is that you never get just a "little" inflation. And once the money-printing train is out of the station, it is pure hell to get it stopped again. Austerity may be no fun, but they call it a "bubble" for a reason: it must deflate to reflect reality again. You can't keep pumping air and pretend it's actual wealth.

I agree with the principle of what you're saying, in that significant deregulation is necessary and LONG overdue. It would help cut the budget deficit through increased revenue. But I don't think that deregulation is really the kind of austerity we're likely to see. What I think we'll see is more squeezing of the actual legitimate functions of government, while leaving all the burdensome regs in place. I've not heard of any of the Europeans who have finally (reluctantly) started embracing austerity taking the smart approach. They leave the junk, the economy-killers, in place.
Oh - and as for the lobbying component, I fear that spending would simply be re-directed toward congress itself.

True. Leftists have embraced the nutty idea that banks get rich by loaning money to people who can't pay it back. Loaning money to deadbeats is not a choice that would be made in a capitalist system. Which is why 1. Government mandated banks to make bad loans and 2. Socialized the losses from bad loans.

Even though Fast and Furious was ready to open up sales to the Mexican cartels there was no reason for them to buy. This means the feds had to subsidize the sales for the Cartels to have any reason to buy US guns.
If you look on page 16 of the stimulus bill you will find $10,000,000 to the ATF - as an economic stimulus you understand. This is how the guns were paid for by the straw purchasers. That directly involves the White House in the operation. Because of the money issue there is absolutely zero chance that this was a rogue operation run by underlings in the ATF or DOJ - as such underlings would not have had access to the subsidy funds necessary to run the operation. The White House asked for the funds; the White House knew about the operation.
Follow the money and things become clear.

That may be true, but it's not like we have money-supply driven inflation now at any significant rate. We're still well below the average rate for the 1980's. We have massive under-utilization of manufacturing capacity and human resources. Note that I do not deny price increases in food and energy, but since those are a world wide phenomenon and have clearly identifiable causes (universally increasing demand) I don't think it's correct to tie those cost increases to inflationary mechanisms.
There is a lot of fear of a hyperinflationary scenario, but when you look at all of those that have happened since 1900, all have been created by either social upheaval, debts denominated in foreign currency, or a mix of both. Zimbabwe and Weimar are examples of this. So far we don't have those.
If we cut the deficit to near-zero too quickly, I contend that the cure might be worse than the disease. 20% un/under-employment is bad enough. I don't know what the magic number is for things to start coming unglued, but I do know that I don't want to find out.

No argument here..
That said.. the GOP leadership is walking a fine line.. the base wants them to be pro-active and do all kinds of radical crap - but they have absolutely no power to do so. They can't pass a thing on their own.. they can only block.
At the same time, they are also trying to get elected in enough numbers next year to retain the House and also take control of the Senate.. all while taking the White House.
We've seen in Ohio what overreaching can do..
I say they should just keep their heads down, pass a mediocre agreement to get us through the next election, and then we can take care of things properly.
I am leaning more and more towards Romney as the guy who can do it. He is the only one in the bunch who has shown he can stand to to toe with Obama in a debate and decimate him with the facts of his failures. I like Perry, but I don't think he has it in him.

Posted by: AuthorLMendez Is Down To Romney Or Newt at November 16, 2011 09:59 AMMore likely, in a month, people will wake up and wonder why they ever boosted The Newt, who historically has never been the conservative people think he is and is a fatcat D.C. insider to boot, or Mutt Romney, who has won a single elective office, handled it badly, and has little else but good hair to recommend him.
It's looking more and more as if Perry should be the pick -- to me, anyway. Even if Cain were to be totally free of slip-ups, marginal ideas and made-up "scandals" from now on, he has been torpedoed by the "conservative" punditry. And they never give anyone a second chance. Except for The Newt and Mutt, that is.

I honestly am curious on what are you basing this belief.
I understand that Romney's debate performances have been for the most part without mistakes, but I have not gotten the sense that he's hit any home runs in them. So let's say he's a solid debater. So what? Has Romney ever fought this administration? What makes you think he will take Obama on in the general when he's never done so before?
Posted by: Y-not at November 16, 2011 06:08 AM (5H6zj)
"There has probably never been a time in the history of this country when we more urgently needed to get a president out of the White House, before he ruined the country."
He goes on to talk about the very real possibility of Obama being elected, despite the terrible economic conditions. Much like FDR, Obama has gained many supporters-in-need through his welfare state:
"We may lament the number of people who are unemployed or who are on food stamps today. But those who give the Obama administration credit for coming to their rescue when they didn't have a job are likely to greatly outnumber those who blame the administration for their not having a job in the first place."
So, while it's easy to hope that the high unemployment and dismal economic conditions would surely eject this jackwad out of the WH, it's all together possible it won't.

I think Obama "can" beat any of our candidates, including RINO Romney. And, at best, Romney will only manage the decline, he won't try to get us out of it.
If all you're concerned about is getting Obama out, that's all well and good (and, arguably, the most important thing), but if you're concerned about actually fixing what's wrong, Romney can't be your guy. Not in the primary, anyway.

I think he (as am I) are basing it on the fact Romney has consistent good matchups w/ Obama in the polls compared to the up and down nature of the other candidates VS Obama in the polls. Of course to be fair, the polls and the actual campaign are a whole different story at times as Dukakis VS Bush in 88 proved.

Seems to me we have done pretty well at winning elections when we've nominated the more conservative candidate. Much less so when we (or the MFM) have chosen the "Dem Lite" candidate.
All of these people have a giant flaw that disqualifies them in the eyes of some. Need to focus/emphasize the Conservative Message more so than the candidate and pick a candidate that can carry that banner reasonably well.

Mitt has been on the national stage running for president for, well forever it seems. His biggest virtue is that he doesn't scare people.
Newbies to the national stage are unknowns, and can be easily destroyed by the opposition's narrative. Cain is flaming out before our eyes and Bachman has already flamed out. Newt's problem is he has too much baggage and that will work against him in the general electio, same with Ron Paul & Santorum. Huntsman's a member of TeamObama so he's damaged goods not to mention he is the cure for insomnia.
Getting the ObamaOccupiers out of the White House is job one. We can't take another four years of Executive Orders sucking our freedoms away from us 24/7.

Mitt has been on the national stage in a Republican primary. That's it. He hasn't been in Congress or in a cabinet or ambassadorship or any sort of national office. He has not been "vetted" nationally in a general election or in the court of public opinion.
He will be plenty scary when the media is done with him.
I think it is foolish to try to project electability arguments based on some supposed national vetting that Romney has undergone when he simply has not been scrutinized in that way.
The folks who are running who have had that kind of scrutiny are Gingrich, as Speaker of the House, and to a lesser extent Bachmann (for her Tea Party stuff), Ron Paul (ditto), and Huntsman (ambassadorships).

I'm just thinking that instead of attacking Newt, Cain or Romney, it may be better to attack Oblama. I feel like that's the higher and more important road to take. Gotta let those independents know what's going on now and what will continue to go on if we keep choosing our plays out of Obama's 101 ways to get to the apocalypse.
I think Perry can do it. Perhaps it makes me stubborn or naive, but I really don't give a good hot damn about the debates. I don't really care about how a debate between Obama and our sacrificial lamb to the MFM is going to turn out. I like Perry's experience, his principles and at this point all of the plans that he's put out sound pretty good to me. It may not be that simple, but it is that clear.

W? The president who grew federal government faster than any previous president in history?
His father?
Reagan? If you think this country is anything like it was 30+ years ago, you are living in a time warp.

Yes, those men plus Nixon and Eisenhower. We did pretty well, reasonably well even, in those elections. Remember the alternatives:
Eisenhower > Adlai Stevenson (2 X)
Nixon > Humphrey ('6
and McGovern ('72)
Reagan > Carter ('80) and Mondale ('84)
Bush 41 > Dukakis ('8
W > Gore ('00) and Kerry ('04)
No, our guys were not perfect "True Conservative" Presidents, but they were reasonably good, and far far better than the alternative. (I shudder just looking at the Dem candidates' names.)
I'll take the time warp comment as a compliment. I have many items still in use that the Smithsonian would probably like to display in their Time Warp showcase. Remember the plates that used to come with the first gen Lean Cuisine meals? Still have some in use as microwave plates. In a 1982 GE microwave. Which heats meals that I sometimes eat in front of my 1984 27" RCA TV. While watching movies on my 1984 Stereo Beta Hi-Fi VCR.
The classics (like Conservatism) never go out of style.

“We have gone as far as we feel we can go on balance. We have to make sure we’re helping the economy,” Hensarling said in an interview with CNBC’s Larry Kudlow. “We put $250 billion in what is known as static revenue on the table, but only if we can bring down rates.
“Any penny of increased static revenue is a step in the wrong direction,” Hensarling continued. “We can only balance that with pro-growth reforms, and, frankly, the Democrats have never agreed [to] that, so I don’t know how many times I can tell you that that agreement is not going to happen.”

I do all my own training, and occasionally work dogs for others. Only Labs, though. I got a thing for those oafs.
A smart dog is easy to train, if you make it a game and don't overdo the sessions. Also having a plan on procedure is smart. Most dogs will pick up what you want the first time or two, the rest is repetition.
