All the Federal “Jobs training” programs teach is bad work habits. Hours and hours of "diversity" training, sexual-harassment training, and conformance to the thousands of federal rules and regulations. But actual, you know, work skills? Not so much. Basically, Federal jobs training programs only train people to work in the Federal government. And I use the term "work" very loosely.
If Greece can leave the Eurozone, anyone can. That's the bureaucrats' true fear in expelling Greece from the Euro: it may cause a domino effect that blows the whole thing to flinders. But the architects of this flawed currency union never anticipated the problems that face the Eurozone now, so there's no fallback position or Plan B. The whole thing is coming to a crisis right now.
Could the Eurozone's problems sink us as well? A collapse of the Eurozone would put the hurt on the world economy, no doubt, but our biggest problems are of our own making.
If you just can't get enough of the Eurozone trainwreck that is unfolding before our very eyes, you can get your "Eurozone crisis porn" right here.

Who's to blame for the U.S. Economy? Everybody. There are no good guys in this crime story. We got our own asses into this crack -- and when I say "we", I mean the citizens of this Republic. We elected the idiots who now infest our state houses and the Federal Capitol. We chose to far outspend our personal incomes. We chose not to save for our own futures. We chose not to invest in R&D, but rather squander our money on impulse purchases. If we want to see the villain, all we have to do is look in the mirror.
Debt is not an inherently bad thing; it is just a financial tool like any other. But like any powerful tool, it can cause great harm if used improperly, and we've been misusing this particular tool for a long time now.

Coalition allies defy Merkel's plea for discretion over Greek default
Despite German Chancellor Angela Merkel warning her government not to make any bold statements about a possible Greek bankruptcy, junior coalition partner the Free Democrats (FDP) are continuing to talk freely.
In Wednesday's edition of Financial Times Deutschland, FDP Secretary General Christian Lindner said that long-term clarity on the issue, desired by the German people as well as the markets, could not be achieved with a vow of silence.

Debt is not an inherently bad thing;
I disagree with this statement. Debt is inherently a bad thing. Sometimes it's just less of a bad thing than other available alternatives. Also, it is possible to mitigate the "badness" of debt in a variety of ways. However, debt, left to its own devices, will destroy you. You have actively to control any debt you do have. Unlike, say, an broadly diverse investment portfolio which (in normal times), if left to its own devices, will grow and make you more wealthy.

I was enjoying the blue on blue action up on the west coast when a union stormed a grain station and took hostages for a day because the company brought in workers from another union.
Hell, the union that supports the Wisconsin Education Association is even suing WEA.

As counter-intuitive as that is, that's exactly my guess. Most economists (I think) realize that, when a collapse is inevitable, it causes less pain and consternation if you'll just get it over with. So I suspect they're looking forward to the collapse with some amount of relief. Even as they stock up on canned beans and ammunition.

Most federal jobs training programs might be worthless, but a good Job Corps center might acutally be worth the cost.
They teach just enough for the students to get a GED, as well as teaching basic work skills like 1) getting out of bed 2) wearing clothes properly and 3) communicating in basic English. Typically, the students also learn a basic trade like carpentry or secretarial.

While I agree, here's the thing: What's the reward for those who did live within their means, who did save for their own retirement, who were responsible and did the Right Things? They are getting used like The Chicken right now. I'm thinking specifically about my parents. They were careful and prudent and their current reward is effectively negative interest on some of their savings. The current system is set up to reward the profligate.

When I worked at DOL I worked with the Job Corps. I agree, it's a decent program as Fed programs go. Their job placement statistics are better than any other Fed job program.

I'm on your side. At the very least, it's time for a new Constitutional Convention. But, really, I think dissolving the Union would not be nearly as bad an idea as many would have us believe. Texas alone is bigger than many nations, with more natural resources. California, too. Maybe if we all went it on our own for a few years, we could get back together and form a new United States much more grounded in the principles of the original Constitution.

No. But amusing though.
"Plots" as in steering very large contracts to friends and getting some money dropped back in your pocket. It takes about $25M to establish a single Job Corps center (they are live-in programs) and then about $7-10M a year after that to run one, depending on location.
That's a lot of money to be slinging around, and the universe of people who do this work is small. They all know each other after a while. Familarity breeds contempt with the taxpayers money. IYKWIMAITTYD.

Personal pride.
It kind of reminds me of something that happened to me in, I think, 3rd grade. Maybe something similar has happened to you.
We were out at recess (when schools still had recess) and were lining up to go back inside. All the other kids in line (or almost all of them) were still yelling and screaming and generally being hooligans. We'd been told to quiet down and get in line several times. Finally, the teacher blew a gasket, and we all got in trouble (I don't remember, it doesn't take much for a 3rd grader to think the world is ending, so it was probably something terrible like getting our names on the board).
At home, I complained to my mom that it wasn't fair (I've since learned to hate that word) that I was behaving and still got in trouble. My mom told me (paraphrasing) "Sometimes there is enough bad going on that you can't see the little good that is also going on. No, it's not fair, but you can just look around and feel morally superior, since you know you got in trouble even though you didn't deserve it." In short, what I would say to my son now, "Life isn't fair. You'll just have to get used to the idea that sometimes you'll be punished for other people's bad behavior."

I don't see that as a "war on the young," I see as exactly what Republicans propose to do with Social Security- people to whom the promises have already been made, and who are already relying on them get those promises kept. New people, who (in this case) haven't had those promises made or who (in the case of SS) aren't yet relying on them, get a new set of promises- hopefully much better grounded in reality.

A greek default would be vastly different than an Argentine default.
Argentina picked a great time to default. They did it in 2001, the had a booming economy from 2001-2007. So Argentina was re-entering a great global economy. Also commodities, of which argentina has some, were soaring in price.
Greece on the other hand would be defaulting and re-entering a global market that is in a near state of depression.
Also Greece doesn't really have anything of value. It doesn't really produce anything. Tourism and boy loving are probably the only money makers over there. And who is going to want to go on vacation in Greece when there will be soaring unemployment, riots and banditry?
Greece is screwed

There are a great many very wealthy people who got there by not incurring debt. There are a large number of very, very successful companies (including, I'm pretty sure Wal-Mart) that did exactly the same thing.
Debt is inherently bad- that doesn't make it always something you should avoid. Opium, for instance, is inherently bad- it has to be controlled very, very strictly (well, now we just don't use it, but go with me here).
Debt is a wealth destroyer, and a liquidity eater. It will, left uncontrolled, or even just allowed to get out of hand, leave you destitute with no reliable way to get back to functional.
That said, having a small amount of very well controlled debt is not likely to cause you so much harm as to offset what good it then allows you to do through higher (temporary) liquidity.

Here at Cherry Point we work very hard to support our vertical lift platforms. H-46, 53, 1, V-22 (transitional) and F-35B (please lord).
We can take a broken hulk from the battlefield or graveyard, tear it down and completely remanufature the aircraft to better than new condition for a whole lot less money than it would cost to buy a new one.
There is definitely too much paperwork and bureaucracy involved in doing this work but we in engineering and the production workers generally work very hard for our servicemembers. Sometimes we are even required to provide support to our assets during deployment, and although we don't need to be right on the front lines- we do get close enough to be targeted.
So, while I do agree that the federal machine is much to topheavy an organization- don't paint all federal employees with the same brush.
BTW- I lost $20K when I went in to federal service. I am considering leaving. More than considering actually- but I won't get into that. It really is not such a great job for the people here who do most of the work.

>>>There are a great many very wealthy people who got there by not incurring debt. There are a large number of very, very successful companies (including, I'm pretty sure Wal-Mart) that did exactly the same thing.
Debt serves a purpose, it let's people know your worthy to lend to, assuming they pay it back or keep up with payments.
America probably wouldn't exist had the Dutch not given us 10 million after our country was founded. It showed to the world that this new fledgling nation was in fact here to stay and that smart businessmen like the Dutch were willing to put money on it(or more specifically, they thought it was a decent investment)

Thanks for pointing this out. IÂ’m in college and, yeah, it keeps me up at night that IÂ’ll be paying for the previous generationÂ’s diabetes medications and end-of-life care.
But good luck getting anyone in my generation to believe in the political process–they’re either stupid enough to believe that it can’t be changed (and it’d be the height of bad taste to try), or believe the real fight is still against racism, nuclear power, etc. And then there’s the growing subset who are being taught that well who cares how many people the country has been a haven for, some Indians’ toes were stepped on; and who cares how prosperous commoners have become here, there was slavery hundreds of years ago. If the system we have has been corrupt and a lie from the start, why participate? Boomers don’t have to worry about maxing out the credit card, we won’t protect ourselves.
Interesting perspective and spot on about how the newest generation of voters mostly has the blinders on about all things fiscal, having learned from their baby boomer teachers that the only issues are things like racism and environmentalism.

All I want to know is where can I get that sweet, sweet green jobs money that Solandra got?
That's what the new Jobs Bill is all about, it's cash for democrats that somehow missed out on the first couple of trillion.

Okay, so, I'm assuming these have been discussed here and I just missed it because I've been tangling with databases and queries for the last few days, but I'll bring them up anyway because I have a toothache and it's really, REALLY setting me on edge. So please forgive me if this is old news.
First, from the traditional DOOMy standpoint, Jeebus and the Mariana Trench, another fricking bus tour? Will he still be using the Mausoleum Motorcade, or will he opt for something a little less morose?
And second, from the Orwellian side of DOOM:
Obama Campaign Launches Website to Monitor Political "Attacks" on Obama: AttackWatch.com
Does referring to Our Dear Leader as a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure count as a political attack? If so, should we report ourselves to the bolsheviks via Twitter (actual hashtag: #attackwatch)?

No, actually, it doesn't. It lets people know you're able to keep up with payments. Especially as currently used. The term "over-leveraged" would have been an anathema to business men just 50 years ago. Now it's common.
Look, I'm not saying that debt is never necessary- sometimes it is. What I am saying is this: if you treat it like "just another tool" you're playing with fire while bathing in gasoline. Debt is not "just another tool." It's something you should use very, very sparingly for very specific purposes and then put away (retired) as soon as possible.
More importantly, if you're having to issue debt, it's actually because people aren't sure you're going to be profitable, and they want to be able to come after your assets when you do fail. If they were sure you would be profitable, they'd invest (that is: buy a part ownership).

We should so act like a certain commenter and blast the hashtag with complete inanities.
Thing like "Someone just said Obama was a keynesian #attackwatch." Or, "just hrd Republican: 'Obama is worthless.' #attackwatch"
The we can get to really good ones
"Is it true Obama doesn't wear deodorant? #attackwatch"
"Why r h8rs saying Obama drinks Zima? #attackwatch"
I'm sure the 'rons and 'ettes can come up with better than that, but those are just off the top of my head.

Like I said, the fact that it necessary doesn't mean that it's good. And there were a lot of people opposing much of that debt explosion. I'm one of them, in fact.
Also, Governments aren't exactly like private entities- since Government will never show a profit, they don't have the "part ownership" (stock) tool to use, and so have to resort to debt much more often. If a City wants to build a new school, it has to issue debt (muni-bonds) to do so. It can't "sell stock" in the City.
But the fact is that debt will still come due, and will still have to be paid. The best you can say about debt re: people believing in your profitability is this: lower interest rates indicate confidence in your position.
Now, in theory, a City could live within its means, setting aside monies each year for infrastructure maintenance and improvement, as well as for new projects to reduce or eliminate their need for debt. Since no city I'm aware of has ever done such a thing, I don't know how well that would work, but I suspect it would work better than most would believe.

I have a few classic machines (Asteroids, Crystal Castles, TMNT, Street Fighter II, Warlords) but for the most part they almost make nothing. They are nice filler at the end of the day and it's because I think that it's far too easy to get your hands on classic arcade games via emulators, iPad/iPhone, XBLA, etc.
The games that bring people in are the new stuff like Terminator and Pac-Man Battle Royale (new 4p competitive version of Pac-Man). I've also got an awesome new game on the way that's kind of an old style shooter with modern ideas blended in
