World central banks might be worried about another "Lehman event" in Europe. The Euro crisis keeps going from bad to worse. EDIT: Teh Bernank to the rescue? Hey, we've got plenty of money, right? If not, we can just print some more! Here's a rule, investors: never gamble with people who can print their own money.
Italian borrowing costs are higher than theyÂ’ve been for more than a decade. This canÂ’t continue for much longer.
The future of jobs. Given that human intelligence and ability fall into a bell curve, it's going to be a tough world for those on the left side of the curve...but really, hasn't that always been the case?
Curing the unemployment blues:
If one government program had its rough edges, a second government program could ride to the rescue. Implicit in this argument was the tantalizing, but fatal, assumption of economic abundance: The government has the power to tax, and with that power, has access to a cornucopia of public funds that never runs empty—at least until it does.
10 things that (honest) capitalists really believe.
The Eurozone: 10 days to live?
A credit rating is just an opinion, and often a mistaken one. It is not a performance guarantee, a fact that many financiers and investors either forgot or deliberately ignored. ThereÂ’s no substitute for due diligence as a risk-abatement strategy.
Time was that as a kid Junior would eat all the cookies and beef jerky in the house and leave you none. Then Junior went off into the world and you thought, “Now, I can have the cookies and beef jerky to myself!” Alas, no: Junior has slunk back to the ancestral manse, is camping in the basement, is drinking up all your beer, and is sitting around in his underwear playing Battlefield 3 all day. (I figure we’ve done enough Boomer-bashing lately; let’s bash on some of those thankless lazy good-for-nothing kids for a change.)
When things stop making sense in the bond world, itÂ’s a good sign that a big shock is not far off. The bond markets crave stability above all else, and when the behavior of that system becomes chaotic, it signifies some pretty bad things.
If the Eurozone crisis is worse than it looks, the citizens of that region are in for a world of hurt, because it looks pretty damned bad. (Also, see my post on the bond markets above: when things stop making sense in the bond world, bad things lurk nearby.)
I’ve said it many times: “Europe” is not a nation like the United States is a nation, and it never will be.
Standard & PoorÂ’s to 37 global banks: BAM!
The problem with AmericaÂ’s spending is only partly debt that weÂ’ve already accrued; the bigger problem is future obligations -- in particular Social Security and Medicare.
McConnell two days ago: “I say no to an extension of the payroll tax holiday!” McConnell yesterday: “I give an extension of the payroll tax holiday a good, firm maybe.” I always love to see a public servant of stout conviction and firm principle. It gives me hope for the future.
UPDATE 1: Those crazy kids from Taiwan explain the Euro crisis to you as only they can.
UPDATE 2: For many heavily-indebted cities, even bankruptcy may not provide an escape from their problems.

well gold and silver continue their rise, so I guess this IMF bailout of Europe is another poop sandwich.
We should have severed ties with Europe after World War 2 or at the very least after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Why do we keep expending so much blood and treasure to a dying peoples?
Why are we voluntarily shackling ourselves to a corpse?

In addition, the initial margin for three-month US dollar operations will be reduced from currently 20% to 12% and weekly updates of the EUR/USD exchange rate will be introduced in order to carry out margin calls. Those changes will be effective as of the operations to be conducted on 7 December 2011.
In other words, we are gonna let y'all borrow lots more for a lower price and with much less asset backing. Hmmm, isn't this how Corzine and MF Global got into a lot of trouble? And by trouble, I mean bankruptcy.

I can't believe we are loaning money, which will be spent immediately, causing inflation, to countries that are defaulting on thier loans.
Isn't Greece's 50% bond haircut basically a 50% default?
Why loan money to countries that can't pay it back, I am not sure we can pay our own debt back.
Is the government using inflation to write off our debt and reduce our entitlement commitment?

Liberty varies inversely with the size and scope of government.
Government, by its nature, exists to limit Liberty- and it's found an amazing means of doing so.

Monty, I've got to side with the rest of the Morons, here. At best, the poster formerly known as 'curious' is an annoying twit who enjoys posting random (and usually off-topic) links. At worst, it is an active troll. We've asked ace (and the other cob-loggers) to ban it several times, and the answer keeps coming back "no." Well, fine, then we'll commence our normal troll-bashing.

Doesn't a downward revision of .8% mean they missed their guess by > 25%? That is (math warning), 3.1 - 2.3 = .8 and .8/3.1 = ~.258.
For reference, if a major business missed it's projected targets by 25%, there would be serious doubt that they could survive the folly.

I would suggest that if you're declaring Chapter 9 bankruptcy, the political process has pretty well "broken down."
I would also point out that asking the Federal Government to do what you do not have the will to do should get you fired. Maybe citizens should vote to get that put in their city charters: "If the municipality ever files for bankruptcy, all council members, the mayor, and officers {list} will be immediately removed from office, their duties to be performed by {whoever} until the elections to fill their positions for the remainder of their terms to be held no later than 90 days from the date of filing."

Tough, as people point out- that work has to get done. If they can't hire illegals, they're not just going to let it not get done- they'll eat a loss (in the form of reduced profit, not in the form of actual loss- probably) and hire legal personnel.

Does the stock market rise on inflation? Generally, yes, as the market value of the underlying companies are being measured in increasingly less valuable dollars.
Gold does sort of, but didn't gold tank and scrape the bottom for decades after it's last big bubble? Yes
Bonds are probably a NO NO especially municipal bonds? Long term municipals are a bad idea; short term are relatively safe from default and interest rate risk.
Inflation will eat up CD's but is a slow loss better than the risk of a larger loss? If you pick the right stocks, they will always beat CDs
Did the stock market tank in the 30's because of deflation? The depression of the 1930s was deflationary, though the market tanked due to a bubble formed in the 1920s.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Private sector job growth accelerated in November as employers created the most jobs in nearly a year, prompting economists to raise their forecasts for Friday's more comprehensive U.S. labor report.
The ADP National Employment Report on Wednesday showed private employers added 206,000 jobs this month, surpassing economists' expectations for a gain of 130,000 jobs. It was the biggest gain since December 2010.
Hiring is up at this time of year and just by coincidence it was up like this last year. Comrades this is a sure sign that Barry's glorious economic plans are working. Just don't look at the "unexpected" January numbers when they come out.

Trouble is, none of it makes sense. I can no longer watch the financial news and feel that the stock market is giving me information related to reality. It's like those stories about planes flying at night with their pitot tubes blocked. The computer is getting nothing but static and intermittent garbled data, and feeding it all back out to the disoriented pilots in the form of nonsense readings. So they're trying to make sense of instruments saying they're going 400 knots on the left, 200 knots on the right, climbing to 4000 ft and about to go into a stall, just before the plane flips over on its back and crashes into the ocean.

VDH has another good column at NRO.
Just an excerpt:
Before Obama, many Americans still believed in massive deficit spending, whether as an article of fairness, a means to economic growth, or just a lazy fallback position to justify an out-of-control federal government. But after the failure of a nearly $800 billion “stimulus” program — intended to keep unemployment under 8 percent — no one believes any more that an already indebted government will foster economic growth by taking on another $4 trillion in debt. In other words, “stimulus” is mostly a dead concept. The president — much as he advised a barnstorming President Bush in 2005 to cease pushing Social Security reform on a reluctant population — should give it up and junk the new $500 billion program euphemistically designated as a “jobs bill.” [MWR - Ah, but Victor, we all know he won't. That is not the Obama Doctrine. The Obama Doctrine is to act like you're doing something, then throw a tantrum.] The U.S. government is already borrowing every three days what all of America spent on Black Friday...

So yes, it is my responsibility to police the thread under my posts and weed out the nastier kinds of trolls: the racists, the abusive jerks, the psychos. People tend to forget that other people can quote that crap to reflect badly on Ace. Ace has a wide readership, and some pretty big names follow Ace pretty regularly. No, I don't buy it. Virtually no one has negative motivations. That is, no one sets out to be Evil because they like being Evil; no one decides to destroy something simply because they like destruction. Motivations are positive in nature, and they must be warped for someone to pursue destructive ends.
Given that, what would his positive (but warped) motivation be to do such a thing? I don't think "spite" (which is really just showing one's power) would quite explain it- unless he really does believe he's doomed next November.

I’ve said it many times: “Europe” is not a nation like the United States is a nation, and it never will be.
My dearly departed British grandparents would have rather died than be dubbed "Europeans." They did not like being lumped in with the "continentals" as if they were all one big happy family. They viewed the continental Europeans as lazy, slovenly layabouts (think Spain and Portugal, and the whole Mediterranean); feckless cowards (French); and the Bad Guy Who Sometimes Was All Right (Germany, c/o WWII). So when the whole idea of a "European Union" was first introduced, I knew it would never work. They've been killing each other for centuries. Little things like the Viking invasions, the Spanish Armada and Waterloo are not easily swept under the rug and forgotten.
Sometimes I swear I can hear a faint hum coming from the vicinity of Vermont, and I know it's the sound of my grandfather's scattered ashes spinning in their resting places because he can't spin in his grave.

Hitler had the positive (not "good" mind you) motivations of power and ambition. They were warped into their negative counterparts, but they're the same motivations that led, for instance, Rome to conquer- and therefore civilize- their "known world." They're the same motivations that lead good people (as well as bad) to seek the Presidency of the United States.

Employment is picking up, but it's regional. And the jobs aren't of the same quality as the jobs that were lost during the recession: many of the new jobs are of lower pay, lower benefits, and fewer hours. That's why I'd like a reliable measure of inflation-adjusted per-capita GDP over the past decade to see how well people are truly doing. I don't think the story is a particularly happy one -- wages have stagnated or even gone down in absolute terms, I think.

It's quite simple - he wants to be liked. Obama lives for praise. He'll be happy to give the Euros billions of dollars we don't have because he believes, "They'll love me again!" He's like the spoiled rich kid at school that nobody likes, but who everyone PRETENDS to like because they know he'll buy you whatever you ask for.
The same kid grows up to be the idiot parent who thinks buying their child every toy the child ever asks for, then indulging their tantrums when they want a different toy, is love.

>>> Little things like the Viking invasions, the Spanish Armada and Waterloo are not easily swept under the rug and forgotten.
Beyond that, after Westphalia in 1648, it took hundreds of years for the nation states we know now to develop.
What we call Germany today, didn't exists as one political entity until 1866 when Austria and Prussia fought a war to see who would unify it. Even after unification, it took time to get the various peoples of this new state of Germany to pledge loyalty to Germany and not their various cities and pricipalities. The line "Deutschland, Deutschland Uber Alles" from their national anthem doesn't mean "Germany above all else" in the sense that they're a better nation than every other nation. It's purpose was to codify in the people's mind that their loyalty to Germany should outstrip their loyalty to their region, city, etc.
The same goes for Italy which wasn't the unified nation we know it as today until 1871. Even to this day the old hatreds still pervade their society. The Northerners and Southerners don't much care for each other.
So the idea that a unified Europe would ever work, or that it could be forced upon the peoples of Europe by fiat in a span of 50-60 years was folly and historically ignorant.

Yikes! For being such a self-proclaimed "worldly, unprovincial" guy, the SCOAMF is actually an ignoramus. I wonder if he has actually read a single non-fiction book since he was out of college.
You would think that at least he would have people on his staff that would know that the country is called the United Kingdom and England is part of the U.K. However, his staff has proven themselves to just as uncurious about the world as the SCOAMF.

You're welcome.
You should also know better than to ask such questions at the HQ.

Gee, EoJ, you're slipping. I wouldn't think a woman sitting on your lap would be anywhere near your face! ;-)

CNN's money spends just like everyone else's.
...flour to bake bread. Some of us bitches still do that.
I wish I could bake bread. It always comes out with a consistency somewhere between beef-jerky and a hockey-puck.

Buy a Kindle Fire?
If they're not just opening and playing, I would guess the ipad is missing a CODEC it needs to view the videos. You probably need to find a compatible video app.

Check out this news I just stumbled across this morning. Not a single local news source is reporting this.
In fact, all we heard during the months of Sept. and Oct. was about "crops rotting in the fields".

The big Lie: Doing the jobs Americans won't do. Right Mr. President. We're all lazy.
These are the jobs we did when we were in high school. A right of passage in my hometown was working in the pickle factory. Standing the conveyor line plucking out the floaters and smashed cucumbers, chunks of wood, mice and snakes that fell into the fermentation tank! Those jobs are done by the illegals now and high-school kids sit at home and play video games.....
How to create 3 million jobs overnight? Make it illegal to be in America illegally.

That explains Cramer's DEFCON 3 rant yesterday. Tell the people the world is going to end unless "we act NOW"
So today, the Fed slaps liquidity on a debt problem, world saved

I still remember the guy on RedState, who claimed to work in finance, trying to tell all us stupid rubes that it wasn't all the bad debt the financial firms were carrying, it was just that they needed more money.
Turns out, us stupid people were right: They've had nearly four years of free, easy money and they are no better now than then.
But, looks like we're going to try this again: If only they have more credit, they'll have less debt.
How many degrees do you have to have to get that stupid?

C'mon. This is the best daily post on the web. Don't screw it up.
It pisses me off to think I'll have to visit goddamned anti-semitic fucking ZeroHedge in order to get my daily doom roundup.
Here Monty provides links to a wide variety of economic blogs that I was previously unaware of. It is a hell of a round up, with genuinely biting and knowledgeable commentary.
I for one, greatly appreciate Monty's efforts and look forward to my "daily doom". Thanks, Monty.

You can't. You don't have access to the custom player, and the iPad doesn't support Flash, which is the only web-based mechanism to do it.

Doom for the whittle chillen in San Fransisco:
Law banning the sale of meals that cause happiness backfires. Results instead in incentivising sales of same unhealthy meal, at a higher profit margin.
-
The San Francisco ban on providing free toys to entice children to eat unhealthy foods goes into effect Thursday, but McDonaldÂ’s plans to comply with the law by charging
10 cents a toy for their Happy Meals and donating the money to the nonprofit Ronald McDonald House.

If you don't want to do the bread machine thing, you might get her a KitchenAid stand mixer with a dough hook.
We had a bread machine eons ago (in the 80s) and it was fun from the standpoint of having fresh bread, but our model (which was pretty basic) was somewhat limited. I didn't like having tubular bread, for one thing! They may be much better now, of course.
