DOOM: Every day I have the blues
— Monty

DOOOOM

RIP Steve Jobs. Jobs was a man who can honestly be numbered in the ranks of the worldÂ’s great industrialists/captains of industry. I disliked his monomaniacal effort to turn Apple's digital world into a "walled garden", but I admired the hell out of his uncanny ability to create whole markets nearly out of thin air, and to ruthlessly out-compete his adversaries. In an industry where razor-thin margins are the norm, Apple was able to carve out 10% profit margins on a regular basis. Much of the modern electronic landscape looks the way it does now because of Steve Jobs and Apple.

War on the young: Greece exiles the future. Walter Russell Meade asks, "Do welfare states always end by eating their young?" Given the evidence so far, the answer is yes. And the young 'uns so far are going rather placidly to the slaughter.

The government pisses away more of your tax dollars chasing the green unicorn.

Harry Reid: Squeeze those rich bastards! SQUEEZE THEM! How dare they presume to have a lot of money! The gall! But, er, leave me and my friends alone because we use our money for stuff Democrats like.

The Greek people sit down and calmly and rationally decide how to deal with their financial crisis. Hah! Just kidding. They're striking and rioting again. Because they've had so much success with that tactic in the past, I guess.

Apparently, Peter Orszag is not a fan of John Lee Hooker’s “House Rent Blues”.

Occupy Wall Street? I donÂ’t know what to say about this collection of layabouts, neÂ’er-do-wells, professional agitators, hippies, yippies, academics, naive college kids, stoners, boners, groaners, red-diaper babies, trust-fund socialists, idiots, idjits, fidgets, New Age freaks, anarchists, union thugs, post-modern relativists, lookie-loos, journalists, and random stupid people. Additional commentary simply seems unwarranted -- listent to them yammer, shake your head, and go about your (productive) business. Think of it this way: if these people had something more important to do or somewhere more important to be, they wouldnÂ’t be standing around in the middle of a workday shouting nonsense.

Some rare good news: Obama finally ratified a pending free-trade agreement with South Korea. (And this is good news in spite of the “lost jobs” moaning from the usual suspects.)

It’s something I’ve noticed myself for many years: in modern cinema, the bad guys are always the businessmen and industrialists while the good guys are always the public-sector folks -- cops, firemen, D.A.’s, FBI agents, and so on. Why is that? Yes, there are exceptions (Iron Man, Batman) but not many. And what about the dearth of war movies based on our experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan? The few that we have gotten are lefty fantasies of US perfidy; the single good combat film (“The Hurt Locker”) was well-received but drew no imitators. The siege of Fallujah and Ramadi would make for an excellent combat film, but so far...nothing. Compare this dearth of film with past wars -- even the hated Vietnam war spawned hundreds of movies and television shows.

Rhode Island court asked to overturn ruling that pension benefits are a contractual right. I doubt the courts will do it, however necessary it will be, especially in a deep-blue state like RI. Still, money that can't be paid out, won't be, regardless of what the courts decide.

John Tamny at RealClearMarkets applies the concept of "Schumpeterian destruction" to the jobs market rather than industry itself.

[T]he paradoxical truth is that the fastest path to true job creation is one that seeks to reduce labor costs through job cuts.

To understand why, we must remember that all jobs are a function of investment. Investment is first and foremost attracted to profits, so when philosopher kings talk up their plans for creating jobs, they're missing the essential point that investors seek commercial situations where companies can produce as much as possible with as little in the way of labor costs as possible.

The Bank of England liked our QE party so much they decided to throw one of their own.

Batman was devised in 1938.  Iron Man, 1963.  Nobody in the media looks to the private sector for their heroes anymore.

A corrollary:  In shows like NCIS and the like, all the bad guys are white men.  Most of them are/were in the military or are/were military contractors.  As far as they're concerned, islam only exists to provide red herrings.

I like to phrase that as "Worshiping the Green Goddess".

Think Moloch, the Minotaur, etc.  False god, demands human sacrifice; the Green Goddess is behind the Population Control bunch, which is parent to all the 'Gaia over humans' ideologies.

And there are plenty of lives which have been (and will be) sacrificed.

16 6, Holy crap, were you home?

No, it was during the day, so everyone was gone- thank God.  And the cop who came by says it was probably some stupid kid- anyone half-way competent would have gotten in without trouble, and this idiot kicked my front door 4 or 6 times and then had to give up.

For the record- with the exception of metal doors with reinforced door-jams, it should take one or two kicks, maximum, to kick open a door.  Even an exterior one.

However, he did pretty well demolish the door itself and the door-jam was split (he only needed to kick maybe once more to get in.  Thank goodness for incompetence), so I spent all day Tuesday running around trying to find someone who could fix my door ASAP (BTW- use Home Depot if this ever happens to you: cheaper than Lowes and they're willing to guarantee a "Measure and Secure" at minimum same-day.), then yesterday was spent waiting for the installer to come put the new (steel) door in.

19 15. I have actually never been this sad at a "celebrity" passing. I just feel this crushing loss. Big shoes to fill. Maybe in a century or two. I need Guy Kawasaki to cheer me up or something. My first Mac was an SE-30. Had that thing for years. I tend to keep them around here, for the kids . . . I am really serious, my friend from college is at Pixar, everyone I know agrees - we would not have had careers without him. The world is a lesser place without him. but you guys go ahead and keep ripping him. it's hilarious.

20 HeartbrokenBlackOrchid at October 06, 2011 It is crushingly sad. There is so little in the way of new tech and people that step up and do great things. That is a loss for the entire world. Maybe one of the numerous kids he mentored will step up.

Yeah, we let our neighbors know, which is about the best we can do.  Once the door is fully installed (the store sent some of the wrong materials for the trim, so the installer has to get the right stuff and come back tomorrow), we're going to buy a door-jam reinforcement kit (costs about 70 bucks- it should be well worth it).

What worries me is that my wife is going to start saying home with our kids next year- and she has been highly resistant to the idea of purchasing any firearm.  I think this scared her enough (what if she and the kids had been home, etc., etc.) that we'll be getting at least a pump action shotgun for the house.

I haven't ripped on Jobs at all.  What I do think though, is that comparing his death to Martin Luther King Jr., Lennon and JFK (as Wozniak did last night) is incredibly wrong.  Those three men were cut down in their prime by assassin's bullets.  Comparing Kennedy's or King's death to Jobs' is shortsighted.

Every bit of technology today comes either from Apple, or from companies who designed their products to compete with Apple.  Jobs' fingerprints are on everything we use.

Comparing him to an assassinated civil rights leader or an assassinated president, though... bridge too far.

Also this destroys that whole bitchy let's cure cancer/AIDS/whatever by giving it to Jobs and Gates and we'll have a cure in six months.  If anyone could have figured out/had the people to figure out how to cure pancreatic cancer, it was Jobs.  It got him too.  Fuck cancer.

My parents have been robbed while they were out of town.  Thousands of dollars of priceless (sentimental) jewelry and heirlooms were taken.  Thank God they chose to lock the dogs in a bathroom instead of killing them.

I bought my own sidearm when I was flying in the service (I didn't like the idea that if I ever needed it, I would be holding a weapon I'd never fired) and kept it when I got out.  My parents' house is why.

Girlfriend is adamantly opposed to all firearms.  Her best friend was killed in his sleep (along with his two brothers and mother) by their father, who then killed himself when she was in high school.  She's insisting that I get rid of it when we get married and move in together because of her (admittedly irrational) phobia.

I don't like the idea of leaving my home (and family, when they show up) in such a position as to be not defensible.

Thoughts from the group?

39 I have actually never been this sad at a "celebrity" passing. I just feel this crushing loss.

I'm wondering how Apple is going to survive his loss. Other companies have survived the loss of their founders: Disney, HP, and others. But it's rare -- the vision, talent, and passion tend to bleed away. Just look at what happened to Apple after they ousted Jobs in 1985 -- they were moribund and nearly bankrupt a decade later. Jobs comes back, and now Apple is one of the richest and most well-positioned companies in the world. That wasn't an accident, or a coincidence. That was Steve Jobs.

I can't say I liked the guy, though. He was abrasive, single-minded, and he advocated a vision of technology that I never could quite get on board with: a world were users were supplicants to technology rather than masters of it. (He always hated to allow users to service their own machines; he'd deliberately use Torx screws and weird flanges and hinges on the cases to discourage tinkering.) However, it was ultimately his vision that prevailed -- from the iPod to the iPad to the iMac, millions of people bought into his view of a computer as a stylish plastic and glass sculpture that you sent in to the experts when it broke.

Steve Jobs wasn't a technical guy (he had Woz for that stuff). He was the visionary, the prophet carrying the message to the people. He knew what he wanted (fewer cables! no arrow keys! only one button! gestures!) and he insisted on getting it. His genius was in getting everyone else to follow his lead.

I doubt he would have been anywhere near as successful as he was if he'd been a nicer or more accomodating person.

Still, money that can't be paid out, won't be, regardless of what the courts decide.

You know, we discuss various rulings that may lead to a total collapse of faith in the US judicial system (*spit* Kelo *spit*, the shafting of the secured interest holders in the GM bankruptcy, the possibility of the upholding of the individual mandate by the Supremes, etc.) but this is what is going to do it.  The courts will either rule that what are clearly contractual rights aren't or the company/municipality/whatevs that is told to pay is going to ignore the order because the money does not exist.  That's going to lead to all kinds of awfulness.

I would like to reiterate that I am now a full fledged member of Team Meteor.

New U.S. claims for unemployment benefits rose less than expected last week, according to a government report on Thursday that hinted at an improvement in labor market conditions.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits climbed 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 401,000, the Labor Department said, from a revised 395,000 the prior week.

The jobless rate is seen steady at 9.1 percent.

We have a very nice Apple store here in the Sydney CBD - all glass walls , a few storeys high and always packed with people - wouldn't be surprised to see flower and candle tributes outside on the footpath

64 In an industry where razor-thin margins are the norm, Apple was able to carve out 10% profit margins on a regular basis.

20+%, more like it.

It's already happening at stores here in the US.

Given how much time CNBC has devoted to Jobs' passing you'd think Apple owned them instead of GE.

The NRA has gun training specifically tailored to women. That might help your wife feel more comfortable with weapons in the house.

My wife wasn't thrilled either when she discovered that I love guns and have many of them, but a gun safe assuaged her concerns very quickly. The idea of all of them (except the home self-defense H&K USP 40SW) being safely locked up in a 600 pound safe made her feel better. I have no idea why, but that isn't the first or last thing I don't understand about women.

10% profit margins ?  I'm curious when the last time Apple's profit margin was that LOW.

Their current margins are now, and have been for a while, in the 25-30% range.  Which is obnoxious when compared to the allegedly high profits of Exxon Mobile, for example, where they are lucky to make 10% profit margin, or the deadly and outrageous profits of health insurance companies that run in the 3-5% range.

(WSJ) Families were more dependent on government programs than ever last year.

Nearly half, 48.5%, of the population lived in a household that received some type of government benefit in the first quarter of 2010, according to Census data. Those numbers have risen since the middle of the recession when 44.4% lived households receiving benefits in the third quarter 2008.

The share of people relying on government benefits has reached a historic high, in large part from the deep recession and meager recovery, but also because of the expansion of government programs over the years.

Just the door plus install ran a about 550.

I love guns and have many of them, but a gun safe assuaged her concerns very quickly.

My plan is a CCW for myself (I felt very naked checking out my house to make sure the bad-guy wasn't hanging around in my back yard or something), and a pump-action for the home.  I'll want a gun-safe because my kids are still too little to understand (2 year olds and guns do not mix).  I want a bio-metric or push-code one, though, because I don't want them fighting with a spin-dial lock if they need the shotgun quickly.

Well, someone who really wants into your house will get in- there's not much you can do about that.  On the other hand, when you have some punk knocking-over houses for fun, you can reward them with a broken foot when they try to kick down your door.

Since the weapon is stored inside, the additional concerns about cleaning and reliability associated with a semi are ameliorated

Yeah, but there's something so intimidating at hearing the sound of a shotgun pump being worked.  I don't actually want to shoot anybody, so- if such a situation occurs- I consider it a bigger win if I can just scare them off.

She's used pump-actions before (skeet shooting with friends), so I know she's good with them.

121 There comes a point where willfully denying what's there right in front of your face, choosing to dismiss it as an event that will pass soon enough with no effects, turns the tenets of a belief system into a fatal catechism. The build-up is gradual, but then one too many myths are loaded onto it, and, without further warning ... sudden and cascading failure. That could already have happened, and it's just taking some time for cracks to open up wide enough to be seen by more than say, 5% who've gone so long without work they're unemployable, another 5% who've just lost or are about to lose work - and right now is being talked about among those who see the thing widening to engulf them too, like unionized workers and brotherhood workers (fire fighters, cops etc). Or, it could be happening now, or be about to happen; it depends how you want to look at those cracks. There's now lots of reports that many of the organizers that have now got themselves into the OWS movement, helping to turn it bigger and also into the Occupy Every Where OEW, movement, spent a lot of time studying what the Tea Party movement did in 2009, and putting those lessons into action. Libs & progs & the Dems mocked that movement for months, & learned to regret that, particularly in the form of the 2010 national and state elections. Someone is going to have to explain why conservatives & Republicans knocking this one will be able to avoid the same fate, at least. (Tell you what: I'm bookmarking this thread, in case any of you feel like mocking me some more, as you will here & now, down the line a year or so - and if so, I'll be more than happy to get mocked some more. On the other hand, history, both long ago and as recent as two years back, says what's going to happen is I'm going to end up getting to say, Told you so, and not liking it one little bit.)

So, what exactly are we getting out of a "free trade" deal with Korea?  Other than greater unemployment, that is?  Based on what I've read the main exports we plan on sending over there are cars and ag produce.  However, the Koreans plan to keep the cars out via fuel economy standards, and are notorious for making sure that what little food we ship them now has to wait on the dock as long as possible, to maximize the chance of spoilage.  This is done to minimize the competitiveness of our exporters.

The fact is that there is no hope of ever setting up an equitable "free trade" deal other than, possibly, with Europeans - who are the only other people on earth who actually intend to abide by the agreements they make.  Every other people see agreements as nothing more than a list of rules to break.  Some are juts more overt about it than others.

125 I'd want a different implementation but I cannot find much fault with the intent of Orszag's idea to get foreclosed housing stock into the rental market. Right now, where I live rentals are moving up and making things increasingly tough for renters in places that have been foreclosed. The renter did nothing wrong but is still forced to leave when their lease is up and faced with a substantial increase in cost for a comparable place. My family is in exactly this position. We've had no meaningful feedback to our queries and may be forced to become squatters despite not having had a late rental payment in the seven years we've been here.

There are a hell of a lot of houses sitting empty and decaying in LA County. The banks don't want to put them all on the market for fear of reality striking and prices dropping to where they should really be. Making those houses into rental units would affect prices, too but not nearly as much while doing a lot of good for people struggling with their expenses.
