DOOM: Feel the burn!
— Monty

DOOOOM

Signposts on the way to DOOM: the failure of the State to protect its law-abiding citizens. This is the breaking of the civilizational compact, and is as clear an indication as you’re ever going to get that things are spinning out of control. When the barbarians can act with impunity, or even with the complicity of the State, then the whole notion of “a nation of laws” is put to rout.

Quan's command center call was the latest example of the mayor's resistance to using police force on demonstrators, a position that is being reinforced both by her closest advisers and her family.

In fact, eyewitnesses say Quan's husband was among the banner-wavers blockading the port in a nonviolent action earlier Wednesday.

Ohio joins California in the “boned by choice rather than by circumstance” working-group of the LOTB. If you’ve ever spent time in Akron or Cleveland or Cinncinnati, this should come as no surprise at all. For Ohio Morons who despair of fiscal sanity ever returning to their state, look at it this way: this will hasten the day of DOOM, but also hasten the reckoning to come after. It’s a hard blow to Kasich, though.

Deficit accounting is a Ponzi scheme. How many government-run Ponzi schemes do we have now? I kind of lost count.

Banks started down the road to perdition when they started trading for their own book, and when their profits came from trading rather than loans to actual customers. The whole point of a bank is to make loans; thatÂ’s one of a bankÂ’s core functions.

Greece: the abyss beckons.

China: the abyss beckons.

Italy: the abyss beckons.

Italy may be going under and Berlusconi may be on his way out, but Berlusconi (and Italy) still have defenders.

One of the problems with the Euro project is that the founders assumed that the concept of the “nation-state” was obsolete. Well, as it turns out...not so much.

One of the many errors the Founding Fathers of the euro made was to underestimate the resilience of the nation state. Yes, we live in a world in which technology, money and people flow across borders with greater ease than ever before. Globalisation makes the planet dramatically interdependent: Philip Bobbitt, the constitutional historian, has written brilliantly of the emergence of what he calls the “market state”. Even so, the nation has retained much of its cohesion, its significance and its grip on popular loyalty. One of the reasons that international elites hate Israel so much is that it is the clearest and most passionate example of this durability.

Financial chicanery in Japan: Olympus fraud went unremarked for two decades until the foreign-born CEO finally called bulls**t. This is a capsule of how Japanese corporate culture has contributed to that country’s long decline. It’s also an illustration of how “financial engineering” has become simply a prettier word for plain old fraud. (Incidentally, the foreign-born CEO who pulled the alarm on the problem? He got canned.)

Remember: Teh Bernank says that inflation is low! (HeÂ’s clearly not a fan of PB&J sammiches.) Also: Go long goobers!

Italy to Berlusconi: Arrivederci, baby.

Time for “eurothanasia”. It’s notable that even the ostentatiously pro-Euro FT has finally thrown in the towel.

Freddie Mac: broke, bailed-out, but still soaking taxpayers. Also: saying that "it's legal" is a pretty weak-assed defense.

Much of our DOOM took root when our public schools turned into a jobs program for adults rather than an educational system for children. A civilization canÂ’t produce good citizens -- literate, able to think critically, and to work productively -- if the schools cannot train children properly. Much of the dysfunction you see around you every day is the result of a lousy public school system and the liberal/leftist establishment behind it.

Three cheers for income inequality. We live in a country were even the lowest classes can afford flat-screen televisions, ipods, smartphones, a car, plenty of food, and a closetful of clothes. Our poor people can buy things for very little money that even a century ago a King could not have bought for all the gold in the kingdom. And yet still we complain about “inequality”. Perhaps we need to reacquaint ourselves with true hardship to remind ourselves of how bad things can really get.

People who raise the alarm about a new “Great Depression” aren’t being dismissed as Cassandras any more. It’s not inevitable (yet), but time is getting very short if we want to avoid this catastrophe.

Karl Denninger and I donÂ’t see eye-to-eye very often these days, but this post is spot-on.

You know, I hear a lot of approving noises from many quarters about how the Greeks should be lauded for their “democratic” resistance to EU demands for austerity. In general, I agree, but I wonder: where were the pundits back when Greece was racking up their huge debts? Things were certainly less “democratic” then, but no one cared because the money was flowing like water. “Democracy” only becomes important to the Greeks when there’s a threat that they’ll actually have to start paying their taxes.

Stealing from derelicts and the homeless. ThatÂ’s pretty damned low.

25 I seem to have finally crossed the DOOM event horizon.

At first when Monty started this series, I was interested, then put off by the constant drumbeat of DOOM, DOOM, DOOM, then I quit reading them and now I read them with casual interest as I would a flood in China, an earthquake in Japan or a famine in Somalia.

It's happening elsewhere and all around but so far not (except for my funemployment) in my immediate neighborhood.

It no longer surprises me, scares me or worries me.

I have no idea why.

33 I like the teacher piece from patterico. In my opinion teachers are one of the laziest groups of "professionals" on the planet.

I had this conversation, at a booster function with one last week where he complained about putting in 600 hours of overtime outside of the core class hours (most of these hours received some compensation, minor but at least it was there). Sounds like a lot but I was ready. I asked him how many weeks he gets off in the summer, ans 10. Well that right there is 400 hours. I then pointed out I worked 460 ish hours last year and DO  NOT get the summer off and get NO compensation.

BTW this is not unusual for most where I work. 30% OT is fairly typical. basically it is a 50ish hour work week for a 2080 hour year.

I ended with. So not only did I work 200 more hours I didn't get paid for any of the hours of OT I put it. That is what it really means to be a professional.

Wow was he pissed hahahahah.

Clothes Free food So much more, non of which relates to the three R's. All of which takes money from the budget. Many Parents have gleefully abdicated all child rearing responsibility to the state. 43 The concept of Unionization may seem beneficial or at least benign to many people.

However on a closer analysis, Unionism is FOUNDED on the fact that the Union members only gain if the majority of the rest of the employed remain unUnionized.

If everyone was in a Union then ALL prices/costs of services and goods would rise to a similar level (driven by the same motives and goals) thus negating any one Unions benefit/money gain from collective bargaining.

It's those of us who are NOT Union that the Union hurts the most. (although some Unions have become so rapacious that they have forced some companies out of business. The usual practice these days is to move to another state or country)

Spot on.  When I encounter the "But who will take care of them if their parents don't?!!" from my school teacher BIL, my response is simple.

Probably no one.  Hopefully a church.

But if you're going to make it possible for lousy human beings to walk away from responsbilities to their kids - they're going to walk away from responsibilities to their kids.

Whatever you subsidize, you get more of.  Stop subsidizing poor parenting and, over time, you'll get (marginally) better parenting.

I'd rather not get into a long Cain discussion, just yet, but I'm kind of with ace on the group press conference thing: if they seem at all credible, it's curtains for Cain.  It's just too hard to believe that that many women (however many it is, but obviously more than 5) would all be lying.

Which is not to say they couldn't be, but that it stretches credibility more to believe that than to believe that Herman Cain is a Horn-dog.

60 Spot on. When I encounter the "But who will take care of them if their parents don't?!!" from my school teacher BIL, my response is simple. So many parents - of all socio-economic tiers! - seem to lose interest in their children after "they get too big to cuddle." It's really sad. Then there are the many who have kids to get another damn check and then leave them with gramma. Anyway I think the old system - large institutional "homes for children" - seems so awful but was probably better than what we have now. Hell since so many are getting breakfast, lunch, dinner at school is it such a stretch to just have them sleep there too?

As for Ohio, PA and MI, there is a reason we're called the rust belt.

Companies are still building steel mills, manufacturing plants, and car assembly plants in America, but they're building them in the southern right-to-work states.

Our problems up north are self inflicted.

PA is a retirement haven. We don't tax retirement or pension income - we are one of few states like that.

It's a trap.  Don't die in PA, at least with anything more than a nominal amount of assets.   It has some of the worst inheritance taxation laws I've ever seen.

Texas does not tax income and is way more inheritance friendly.

The sad thing is that since contractors are required to note any foreign made parts and to prove that those parts met quality requirements, this means that the US contractors falsified reports or falsified tests for those parts to be accepted by Gov.

I know, I used to work for a Gov contractor. Paperwork out the yingyang and spot inspections by Gov QC insp.

If the parts are bad there's a lot of blame to go around.

BTW. There are so many manufacturing concerns in China and NO enforced standards (some mean ISO standards but even sometimes those credentials are faked) so the quality from one source to another is very erratic.

The real trouble? We've LOST the ability to make some of this stuff. I don't mean we don't KNOW HOW, I mean we don't have the production capacity, the skilled workforce or the suppliers anymore.

It's all gone overseas because the cost of manufacturing got larger than the gross profit.

We're going to lose our space industry also if steps aren't taken soon.

Much of this was/is caused by Union greed, over regulation and public complacency.

Oh I know. The point I was making is that it was an off year election with little to actually vote on and yet these people turned out. Most of them were practically infirm. One guy took about 10 minutes to vote. There were like 8 races(most uncontested) and a retention of judges vote.

These are people that never leave the house, can barely stand, yet they alway show up at the polls.  They show up for Presidential elections, off year elections, primaries, everything. They are never going to let go of our money.

True, but its always been that.  Back when I had a real job, we used to buy a lot of parts made over there, and it was always obvious when we'd open the "third-shift" crates.  Lots of failures right out of the box.  On top of the normal failure rate.

Total bullshit.

The point of a bank, or any business, is to make money. If a bank can make more money trading their deposits rather than lending them -- more power to them. Anything else would be a violation of the compact they have with their shareholders; which is to maximize shareholder value.

You don't get to define a business a priori. An integral part of capitalism is this fantastic evolution and revolution in business creation and change. Without that we would be mercantilists, and much, much poorer.

139 Anybody not see this coming?

US weapons 'full of fake Chinese parts'

There is a legal requirement that all weapons systems and parts be made in the United States. Yes, I can see that Chinese counterfeits could get into the supply chain. Certainly Chinese counterfeit aircraft bolts have been seen for a long time.

The reason aircraft bolts are special is that all metal parts in aircraft have to be X-rayed and magna-fluxed to make sure they don't have cracks or internal flaws. When you sell standard bolts as certified aircraft bolts a certain percentage of them are going to be defective. Awkward to have a wing or tail part drop off in flight because of a defective bolt. The parts inspection process is part of the reason that private airplanes cost so much more than automobiles.

In the past commercial electronics parts have been very reliable. However today with the Idiot ROHS process removing the lead from solder and the shrinking line widths of the manufacturing processes that is no longer true.

Lead was in the solder because it kept the tin in the solder from growing whiskers and shorting things out. Military chips are supposed to be exempt from ROHS as are aerospace chips - but just about all chips manufacturers are saluting the green flag and making all their chips  ROHS compliant. Expect airplanes to start falling out of the skies as these ROHS chips sneak into aircraft manufacturing lines and on board electronics control systems start shorting out.

The line width reliability issue has to do with ion migration inside the chips. High temperatures allow dopant ions inside the chips to move because of thermal diffusion. When you had thick line widths in chips the ions couldn't diffuse thermally far enough to change chip characteristics except over hundreds of years. With today's thin line architecture that time has shrunk to a few years.

Milspec parts sacrifice performance for reliability.

Just another example of DOOM that has to be corrected.

150 If a bank can make more money trading their deposits rather than lending them -- more power to them

The problem is that if they do that, they're no longer banks, they're investment firms.  A bank, as a business, is defined by the fact they accept deposits and make loans.  Just like a restaurant is defined by the fact they sell prepared food.  Some place could call itself a "restaurant" but only sell raw food to other restaurants, but that doesn't make it a restaurant.

So, yes, in the sense of "being a bank" banks exist (in part) to make loans.

Now, that's not to say they shouldn't be "trading their deposits," but it does mean that, if that's all they're doing, they're not actually engaging in one of the two main functions of banking anymore.

This is the problem- St. Sarah was never vetted.  She was smeared.  The two are superficially the same, but fundamentally different.

Many (most?) people who defend her do so on a visceral, emotional level.  Much like St. Herman, they "know" the accusations are false because... they just do.

Now, in Palin's case, those paying attention actually know some facts (though some of those are 'open to interpretation'), and know that the smears were largely (if not completely) false.  But that won't matter, this cycle.  The damage is done, and we would spend as much (if not more) time "defending" St. Sarah than we would anyone outside of Herman Cain.

The other politicians (even Mittens) are being vetted: their records are being examined (or have been already), they are being challenged on substance and perceived inconsistencies.  No one has done that to Palin, because there was never a need.

179 and its only function is to make as much money as possible.

No.  And that's a fallacy into which conservatives fall all too often.  A business's function is to do it's business: that is, provide a good (or set of goods) or service (or set of services) to its customers.  If a business is performing its function successfully, it will provide a profit to its owner(s).

Now, you can claim my point was semantics, and that's true to some extent.  The point, however, is that we do categorize things by name.  If I had a hardware store but called it "AllenG's Fresh Groceries," you would be justifiably nonplussed when you couldn't find a tub of butter.

Similarly, if a "bank" has ceased performing one of the two cornerstones of banking (that is: making loans) then people are justifiably nonplussed when they try to get a loan there.

I'm not disagreeing that them seeking greatest profit is what they're doing.  To some extent, it's what they "should" do.  But, for clarity's sake, if they're going to stop banking, they should stop calling themselves banks.

185 I'll respectfully disagree. She was a VP candidate and was vetted in totality. Everything after that has been tabloid BS.

No, she wasn't.  At least not if by "vetting" you mean actually having her record examined.  She was smeared.  It wasn't right, it wasn't fair, and it did her a great disservice (partially by convincing her fan-base that what had happened was the same as "vetting"), but it was not vetting.

The most succinct summation of the difference is this: vetting requires staying in the realm of philosophy.  Smearing can use perception only.  That is: hitting Rick Perry over the Texas DREAM act is vetting- that's an actual policy he should have to explain.  Romneycare?  Vetting.  Racist rock?  Magic underwear?  Those are smears.

Now, tell me actual policy decisions that Sarah Palin made as governor that received major media attention, and that she had to explain why they were consistent with her stated, conservative, beliefs.

196 If they don't think it will make a profit, no matter how great the product is, they won't sell it.

You're talking motivation, not purpose.  And the difference is important.  My current client (I'm a consultant) is a perfect example of this: due to a failure to define a purpose, they have been in bankruptcy for several years.  They've tried to come out of bankruptcy at least once previously and failed, because they can't decide what their purpose is.

Indeed, the people who currently own the company believe it's purpose is to "make a profit," but because that is how they define the purpose of the business, it is less successful than it should be.  If they could/would define the purpose of their business as "we're going to provide the best X at our price point," their profits would increase, and they could move back to being publicly traded in a year or two.

Using your own example: if someone has an idea for a widget, but doesn't think they can make profit by manufacturing and selling said widget, we need to examine the widget itself.  Why do they think it can't make a profit?  If it's more expensive to make than the value others would place on it, it is not that great a widget.  If it's just more expensive to manufacture themselves, then maybe they'll try to sell the design of the widget to someone who can make a profit manufacturing them.

He said he was willing to pay more in taxes if that meant keeping his job and helping his poor sister who is still unemployed, having lost her job in the private sector.

I said he might be, but others won't, and guess what, they'll vote with their feet, including the local businesses and leave the state.  When enough people leave there won't be enough high taxes in the world to make up the difference, and you'll suffer either the loss of your job or severe pay cuts anyway.

My Mother tells a story of when she was a teen during WWII (her job was scrubbing out the gas tanks of freshly built bombers) and leather shoes were impossible to get. She had a date, and had gotten what she described as  cardboard shoes. She was taking a bus to meet the guy and got caught in a SoCal rain storm.

Her shoes fell apart as the glue holding them together melted.

Something like this is hard for us to imagine, much less a lot of the freaks parked in encampments with their ipads bitching about the state of things.

See, simply pointing out that Rick Perry (because I'm most familiar with him) has had a balanced budget every year he's been Governor- including overseeing the State's first real budget cuts in I don't even remember how many years (Since WW2?) is pointing out an accomplishment.  Claiming that Rick Perry is gay (or womanizing, or a gay womanizer, as someone once tried) is a "smear."  Explaining that TTC is not a "land grab," and was a plan to address a real need of the State of Texas is "vetting."

When you go to Temple Square in Salt Lake City there is invariably some jackass who is "protesting" the LDS Church and holding up under garments while doing so.

That's not going to be the problem, imho.  The problem is going to be their Church teaching about people of African American descent which extended up to 1978 iirc and the church's efforts in opposition to gay marriage.  The former is going to be hard to address without going into a lot of doctrinal things that will seem weird to non-LDS and the latter is going to attract a lot of blowback from the usual suspects in the entertainment industry.

228 It's too easy to glibly claim that any concern over weird religions is ipso facto "bigoted."

Yes, it is, and that's not what I was trying to do.

Using my stance, making Mitt Romney confirm that, in any elected office, his religion would necessarily be of (at most) secondary importance is "vetting."  Simply saying "Mitt Romney is a Mormon- and you know you can't trust them" is a smear.

A business can call itself anything it wants, and conduct business in any way it sees fit

Certainly it can, in theory.  But, I guarantee you, if you open a hardware store, advertise as a hardware store, call yourself the owner of a hardware store- but sell groceries- you won't make a profit.

We use words, names, to mean things for communication purposes.  When someone says "bank," they're talking about a business which accepts deposits (as liabilities) and issues loans (which it considers assets).  If Chase Bank tried to stop issuing loans, and only traded with other "banks" it would cease making a profit.  Indeed, it would go under the very next year, because a bank can't make a profit (by the way it considers deposits "liabilities") just by trading deposits.  There has to be some kind of investment going on somewhere.  It may be making loans to other banks, or only to businesses, or whatever- but for a bank to make money, it must issue loans at some point.

Long life to her, but like the justification for these DOOM posts in the first place, we're DOOMed - no sarc.  The collective we will not impose on ourselves the discipline to fix the problem.  Even the so called 'super committee' is only looking at slowing the march toward DOOM.  Consideration of paying down the debt we have shackled ourselves with isn't even under consideration.  This country is in decline and there is absolutely nothing in discussions of current elected officials or in the proposals of any of the candidates that will seriously reverse the decent.

233 Shame on Ohio.

Agreed! I'm a public employee in Ohio (university professor, although that is marginally public in that tuition still pays a great deal, if not all, of my salary) and I think people are being short-sighted here. Ohio is bleeding population, and the failure of Issue 2 will ensure that this continues. And when there is less "public" there is less need for public servants. Layoffs will come. Public servants could have decided to spread the pain around a little (very little, Issue 2/SB 5 really wasn't as draconian as unions made it out to be; most of the reforms were fairly reasonable, but it did strip unions of much of their power).

This is simply an issue of math, not ideology.

What I also find sad is that many school levies also failed. I'm not sad that they failed per se (that's up to the voters in each district and none of my concern), but combining that with the failure of Issue 2 says to me that these people want to keep high pay for public employees, but want someone else to pay.

I hope Kasich, at minimum, comes back with a right-to-work law. I'm sick of paying dues to a union that I disagree with.

It's a little worse than that, though, because Romney was a Bishop in the LDS church.  I don't fully understand how their church hierarchy works, but the church can call the men who are in the priesthood (recall, they are all lay ministers so they are not equivalent to for example a Catholic lay minister) to service.  I am not sure if they can decline.

So asking Santorum to comment on the Catholic Church's policy about celibate priests or women priests is not quite the same as asking Romney about LDS teachings, imho.

238 I still don't see your point, Allen. It still seems like making a profit comes first.

Well, no, the idea comes first.

But, yes, a person (or some people) have an idea, and decide they can get rich by pursuing it.  In that sense "profit" comes first.  However, for the business- as an entity- to put profit first is (at best) a slippery slope.

It's a very, very fine distinction, and I realize that.  But look at businesses that forgot that providing their profit/service should come first and focused on profit.  I'm willing to bet the vast majority saw major setbacks fairly quickly.

I can point to 3 off the top of my head: Countrywide, Dell, Wachovia Bank.

Penn State is 8-1 with a home game against Nebraska this Saturday  and followed by away games against OSU and Wisconsin.

Penn State could also qualify for for the Big 10 Championship Game and be invited to a  bowl game.

JoePa would be doing Penn State a favor if he quit after Saturday's game, if not before.

Monty, that Denninger post that you link to strikes me as anything but "spot on", but rather just another example of what's wrong with the man. The Journal quote that he cites as evidence of dishonesty merely makes the rather modest claim that "Washington's rising subsidies for college are a big reason that tuition keeps rising faster than inflation." That's a claim that I think would be fairly uncontroversial among the economically literate: artificially increase demand and you'll increase prices. But because the Journal chose as the subject matter of their editorial something different than his current pet peeve, the Ignatius J. Reilly of Niceville has cast the editorial board into perdition.

He was always marginal at best, but his Party-of-One rhetoric has made him absolutely unreadable. I pity his neighbors, whom I imagine are bombarded daily with leaflets on the correct way to trim the hedges and the proper time to fertilize the grass, declaring all naysayers to be frauds and liars.

Companies that you describe as 'putting profit first' are businesses that started to have crappy products. Nobody starts a business with the idea to just put their product out there. It is only if their product will make money that they will sell it. If some other business makes a better product that business will make more money, of course. That will lead the first business to improve their product, not because they want to simply have a better product but they want to make money.

I do put the blame on the Prez and the football program that knew about this. But let's not allow everything PSU to be utterly turned to sh*t by one pedo. It's not fair to do that either.

Of course being RC and having my kids in Catholic school this is an argument I have a lot.

Really, if you're going to work with kids, I swear they're going to have to do that test where they hook up the guy to electrodes and show him porn and see what turns him on.

Does anyone know the stats for pedophilia? Is is more girls or boys getting molested? And I mean pre-pubescent. While horribly wrong I don't see diddling someone who has an adult body and is underage the same level of sicko as one who still has a kid's body.

Hetero pedos are just sloppier seems like. PLUS - their being gay sort of insulates them from scrutiny, in a twisted way. That's what happened in the Church. Politically incorrect to go after the gheys.

Not stopping it immediately and forcefully is a crime -- perhaps not according to the law -- but certainly according to any moral and ethical code of behavior.

That's the argument on the smoking gun. They say that pedos aren't gay when if they prey on boys. I contend that a straight man is never attracted to male genitalia regardless of age.

I think Mitt is going to have a very hard time in the general election if he's the nominee.

I think so too.....for a lot of reasons. There is a long list of things that Romney will get shredded by the media for, and his being a Mormon is only one of them:

Hedge Fund Mgr, Millionaire, Corporatist, Killed domestic jobs, Exported jobs.....these are the things they'll use against him to alienate swing-voters.

Squishy positions and flip-flops on conservative issues....these are things that alienate conservatives.

The Mormon thing, plus the fact that his branch of the Romney clan hails from the Mexican poligamy settlement where his dad was born.....this will be used against him with Evangelicals.

People say that "Obama won with 52%". .....But a lot of conservatives stayed home. So he really only won with 52% of the people who voted.

That thing that people keep saying...."anyone can beat Obama"....is a myth. And a trap. ....If Romney is our nominee, it is going to be a very tough job to beat Obama.

My husband's high school did the same thing. They had a molestor football coach they IGNORED and helped for 20 years. Suicides, alcoholics, etc. He picked on vunerable boys. Hubby was invited on a ride home and some senior told him not to go. He didn't find out till recently. The school is still fighting the charges but there are sooo many boys who were molested.

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno will retire at the end of the season, his long and illustrious career brought down because he failed to do all he could about an allegation of child sex abuse against a former assistant.

"This is a tragedy," Paterno said. "It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

Paterno has been besieged by criticism since former defensive coordinator and one-time heir apparent Jerry Sandusky was charged over the weekend with molesting eight young boys between 1994 and 2009. Athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz have been charged with failing to notify authorities after an eyewitness reported a 2002 assault.

Paterno decided to retire at age 84, in the middle of his 46th season with the Nittany Lions. He won 409 games, a record for major college football, but now, the grandfatherly coach known as "Joe Pa," who had painstakingly burnished a reputation for winning "the right way," leaves the only school he's ever coached in disgrace.

"I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case," he said. "I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief."

329 336 It's weird because we are looking at it from the present but just a very few years ago people thought they were doing the victim a favor by not saying anything. I asked some of my husbands friends who were molested by the coach if they had ever told their parents. They had but the parents really wanted it hushed up and the school wanted it hushed up. Going public that you had partisipated in being molested was a threat not something that you automatically did. There was a lot more shame just a decade ago than there is now.

332 One donor, a guy named Katz who gave $15 million to name the law school, has already hit the media saying Paterno should be out. I hope that a bunch of them do the same.

He really should be gone now.  He knew the guy had a problem stemming at least as far back as 1998 with the shower incident that was investigated by campus police and the DA so he cannot hide behind euphemisms like "inappropriate behavior" with a 10 year old and pretend he did not know what that meant.

335 Well, I have tenuously been defending Romney but I am now questioning the conventional wisdom of his electability and, even more than that, am worried that he will split the party irrevocably. The only serious alternative I think is Newt. His supposed unelectability is more conventional wisdom I am beginning to question. No one can articulate the case against Obama and for conservativism any where near as effectively as Newt.

What happens when he doesn't repeal Obamacare or tries to push cap-and-trade? What happens when he becomes Obama's second term? I'm not saying this will definitely happen. I'm just trying to understand why beating Obama means you throw away your principles.

Hmmmmm...is it just my imagination or did we have all of this circa 1776 without publicly funded, government, compulsory education?

The system was not designed to produce good, literate, thinking productive citizens.  It's designed to produce ignorant, illiterate, compulsively consuming and compliant workers and citizens.  And it's doing an excellent job of this.
