Yestday, the Dow sank like a holed submarine, dropping a terrifying 635 points and taking most world markets along with it. David Ranson over at Forbes tries to explain why the stock market tanked.
Why this crisis is different from 2008.
Starting from the most obvious: The two crises had completely different origins. The older one spread from the bottom up. It began among over-optimistic home buyers, rose through the Wall Street securitization machine, with more than a little help from credit-rating firms, and ended up infecting the global economy. It was the financial sector's breakdown that caused the recession.
The current predicament, by contrast, is a top-down affair. Governments around the world, unable to stimulate their economies and get their houses in order, have gradually lost the trust of the business and financial communities.
That, in turn, has caused a sharp reduction in private sector spending and investing, causing a vicious circle that leads to high unemployment and sluggish growth. Markets and banks, in this case, are victims, not perpetrators.
Perma-bull Larry Kudlow, always able to see chicken salad in chicken shit, advises everyone not to panic.
King Putt, never one to lose an opportunity to make a bad situation worse, came out to exercise his voice some more. The markets, which had been showing signs of rallying prior to the speech, accelerated their crash-dive. Some cynics with shriveled black raisins for hearts might suggest that this is a massive "no confidence" move in our esteemed God Emperor.
London is being rocked by riots as I write this. This counts as financial news because London is a major financial hub, and this just adds to the uncertainty that many investors are feeling right now. Also, the UK is in the middle of a major austerity push, and there is a lot of free-floating anger and anxiety in Britain (and elsewhere) about what the future may hold. The "causes" of this riot almost don't matter; the fuel for this riot is the same fear and atavism that many people in the developed world are feeling. (This is how widespread the rioting is. It's not just some small, localized disturbance.)
Thanks to the pension crisis, the public sector should prepare for a "lost decade" of pay increases.
Update 1: Bret Stephens on the unparalleled genius of our God Emperor - "I don't buy it. I just think the president isn't very bright." ----------------

Federal payments required by President Barack ObamaÂ’s health care law are being understated by as much as $50 billion per year because official budget forecasts ignore the cost of insuring many employeesÂ’ spouses and children, according to a new analysis. The result could cost the U.S. Treasury hundreds of billions of dollars during the first ten years of the new health care lawÂ’s implementation.

Big Government's Big Spending Has Boosted Inflation and Killed 3.5 Million Jobs
A sample paragraph:
The Fed's foolishness has weakened job markets. A former president of the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank, William Ford, and an American Institute for Economic Research fellow, Polina Vlasenko, point out that Bernanke's tactics have depressed the interest income of people who rely on savings accounts, CDs, money market funds, Treasury and municipal bonds, and variable annuities. As a result, individuals' income losses are huge. Ford and Vlasenko calculate that quantitative easing most likely caused a $371 billion reduction in personal annual spending, a 2.53 percent reduction in total economic output (gross domestic product, or "GDP"), and a loss of 3.5 million jobs.

I love that the first thing the British ruling class does (after returning from "holiday" abroad) is sit down to have a meeting on how to handle the crisis. Call me crazy, but shouldn't there already be a plan on the books for this? And shouldn't that plan be multi-faceted, with ascending levels of action to match the escalating spread of violence? There are many in Britain calling for the military to be deployed, to which I have to ask: what military? Britain has gutted its military. So long as they don't try to call on the sad, pathetic remnants of their once mighty navy they MIGHT manage to make a dent in the rioting, but I'm not too sure of that.
My mother hails from Wembley, and previously Bethnal Green, which has seen it's fair share of these riots. It's heartbreaking, but sadly, not a surprise. Britain has fallen so far so fast. Winnie Churchill is spinning so fast in his grave, you can hear him whirring around like a dentist's drill.

On the first, there is some CEO of an Investment group (I think, but I can't remember his name) who wrote a "dumbed-down" federal budget. That is, he took 8 figures off the federal budget to show how bad things are in terms people actually understand. If I heard correctly (radio this morning) taking 8 zeros off the figures means the federal government is taking in about $21,000/yr, spending $36,000/yr (I expect he's using out-dated numbers, there), and has $145,000 in debt. Those oh-so-major "cuts" from the previous debt negotiations is like taking that spending down to $35,700/yr, instead. Woo. Hoo.
On the second, I've been thinking of putting together something that follows the effects (on everybody) of just the gasoline/ethanol mandate. Increased price of corn, and corn products, increased price of gasoline (fewer suppliers of a now required additive), but also starvation in some third world countries (more money in selling corn to the US than selling grain to your neighbors), increased prices for other farm products (less production of some crops, higher feed prices for live-stock, etc.), increased prices for durable goods (did you know a lot of clothing apparently uses corn silk?), and so forth.
Maybe, if people could see how wide those shock-waves go, we could get them to understand why government "action" on any economic front is always (and only) bad.

This is one reason why our ruling class is performing so badly. We realize that obama is an undereducated, unjustifiably promoted example of the peter principle. he's fucking up the exact same way he did when he ran a foundation, but on a far grander scale. But I suspect that all to many of our betters have realized the agony to come from this reckoning, which is why they've been putting it off as they have. If anything, actions in Greece and the UK will serve to encourage their efforts to paper over yeat another crisis, as seen by talk on Fox about both parties considering new taxes. If they get them, they will simply spend them, using the same asinine logic the clown from the debt bureau used when it was learned that gifts submitted to reduce the debt were being immediately spent. Their logic? "By spending it now, we avoid adding to the debt". No hint of even considering the option of not spending.

I wouldn't worry about it. She'll be pregnant, sitting her fat ass at home and on the welfare roles any day now.
The high school had buses with car seats, a state of the art day care center, and a top notch little kid's playground as well as a young child dietician and mini cafeteria (free). It also has planned parenthood offices in the actual school which is new, green and was vastly expensive.

Thanks for the info. The other day someone posted a link to goldeneaglecoin.com. Do you know if this a good site?
Goldeneagle charges premium prices. If you want to pay premiums, just go to eBay and buy all you want. Junk silver is your best bet right now.
But at some point in the next few years high quality silve coins will appreicate much faster than junk silver, happens every time in a runup.

On the English rioting, meh!
What's the big deal? I think we americans don't understand rioting because it happens so rarely here, whereas in Europe it is extremely common. It's actually quite frequent. Demonstrations and riots happen all the time.
It's so rare in America so we're naturally fearful when we see them in Europe.
Also, it should be noted that the rioters always end up doing much more damage to their state cause. Look at france in 68 when they called that Wildcat strike to dislodge De Gualle's government, which was already sinking in popularity. I think some 11 million people turned out. Well they had elections and de Gualle crushed them because the middle class almost never supports that kind of disruption to daily life or violence.
I don't, and you shouldn't, be overly concerned when shifty immigrants who refuse to assimilate and welfare whores riot. It is almost expected of them. They're not going to win anything with their riots.
However, you should panic when the middle class riots. That's when a real change, probably for the worse is going to come.

This same kind of situation occurred to my old boss. Her young, second-grade age daughter was in a class with a boy who had "severe emotional problems" (in other words, he was a fricking ticking timebomb). It wasn't uncommon for him to fly off the handle and kick, punch, or bite other children, as well as the teacher. My boss found out about him when her daughter came home one day and described how he had thrown a chair at the teacher. Again, this is a second grader.
But he couldn't be removed from the class. Why? Because he was a "special needs" child due to his emotional problems, and removing him from class would be considered "discrimination."
My boss went BALLISTIC.
She's one of the few bosses I've ever had who wasn't a full-on liberal and who actually had a decent dollop of common sense. She didn't pull her child out of the class, but she rallied the parents of many of the other children in class and pressured the school administration and the school board to get the kid placed in a special class all his own. Frankly I think he should have been sent to an entirely different school for children with such severe issues, but you win what you can.
It just goes to show you the extremes bureaucrats will go to to avoid offending anyone, even if it means innocents are put in harm's way.

She said there was a 13 year old ghetto girl in the 5th grade class who was verbally and physically bullying and brutalizing the other kids. Apparently she was separated from the class while the class was instructed on how not to provoke her.
This is one of the huge, huge problems I have with the It Gets Better campaign. It's fine as far as it goes, but there's no discussion of the tried and true way to stop a bully. All those idiotic zero tolerance policies have done is embolden the bullies since they know they won't get beaten down.
The same thing goes for the rioters. It's not like they'll be shot, so why not?
I wish I had handy the picture of the neighborhood group in Nashville holding the banner saying something about why there was no looting. Everyone was armed to the teeth.

The problem is that no one (especially the mostly-average intelligence politicians we keep hiring for some reason) can actually understand trillion dollar budgets...
1 million dollars = 1 x 10^6 $
a trillion is a million million:
1 trillion dollars = 1 x 10^12 $
Lets put this in perspective: If we count to 1 million, assuming one second per number, it would take about 11.6 days. In order to count to 14.3 trillion at one second per number it would take about 453,149.3 years!
We're boned.

Catholic elem is a huge bargain. Just remember that the elitist St Mary's is big enough and many of the Bel Havens are weathy enough and unsupervised enough that the St Mary's girls go to BI having, uh, been around the block. They all "date" by 5th grade unlike St Rita's, Blessed Sacrament, Queen of Apostles. 1st day of school at BI a nice St Mary's girl offered my older son "head". Because he went to Blessed Sacrament, he replied "I don't do drugs". Happily he's handsome enough he was able to live that down.

Yup, that is why I said junk silver is your best bet right now. For longer term profit, quality silver coins will outperform junk silver. I have done well with them myself over the years. But you really need to be knowlegeable to do it.
LIke I said, go to the coin shows, dealers there will negotiate, and often you can buy junk silver very near spot. Wait till the last day of the show, near the end of the day and make an offer just under spot prices, you may get lucky with a dealer who wants some cash.

I know he's a bit of a lib-tard (though it doesn't show too much in his writing), but I like Eric Flint Ring of Fire series. In one of the first few chapters of the first book, the local UMWA (WV town gets transported to 1631 Germany) have basically formed the town militia, and killed a bunch of looters. On the mass grave, they basically post a sign that says something along the lines of "We don't know who these men were, and we don't care. This is now USA territory. If we find you looting, raping, or killing, there will be no arrest, no trial, and no appeal- we will just shoot you."
One of my favorite parts of the book, actually...

157 You actually may be better off with the public schools if your kid is special needs. They have a lot more resources, money, time. The catholic schools are really set up for the status quo---my only huge complaint. I couldn't get any help with my oldest LD ADHD son, in fact the attitude all the way through was that he maybe "shouldn't be there". I thought, however, that the public school whould have him coloring in a corner since he standardized tested as a vegetable. I retaught him everything every night all the way through high school. I still go over most of his stuff long distance in college. I just need him to have his degree because he's a great worker but not a test subject.
The other two sons can't get any "extension" in the catholic schools but they've learned to read on their own while the class lumbers along. In the end, it's not ideal but it's low stress, low liberalism, low threat, cheap, convenient and religious.

That's called executive leadership. As opposed to Obama's different variations of "it's not my fault".
