This is the worm at the core of the rotten Social Security and Medicare apple: it asks young and comparatively poor people to transfer wealth to older and comparatively wealthy people.
Since the Census Bureau started publishing measures of poverty in the 1960s, our understanding of the concepts of poverty has changed. As well as better measures of income and spending, we also need to include measures of assets and employment. Then, we need to figure out how to make younger people better off.How about letting them save for their own money for their own retirements instead of forcing them to dump their money into the broken SS system?
Rick Perry's flash-crash. I'm beginning to think that I'll have to write in "Zombie Nixon" on my ballot next year....
Democrats walk away from the Super Committee. Everybody who’s actually surprised by this, raise your hand. This was inevitable and probably the point of the exercise all along for the Democrats. Democrats will die on the entitlement hill -- to the extent that the Democrat Party is about anything, it is about the continuation and growth of the welfare state. They will never vote to roll it back. The Democrats picked far-left ideologues to staff the Committee for a reason. And, just as predictably, they will blame the failure of this farce on the “intractable” GOP.
Italy canÂ’t catch a break. I think the problem investors have with Italy is the same one they have with Spain, Portugal, and Greece: there are no prospects for GDP growth, and thus little hope of paying off the debt. Italy barely squeaked out a 0.6% GDP growth rate during the Euro boom years of the 2000Â’s; in a recessionary environment, it doesnÂ’t take a genius to see whatÂ’s going to happen. And just like the rest of Europe, ItalyÂ’s demographics suck -- the population is rapidly aging, and there aren't enough young people to support all the old people. This is not a problem you can fix with a new Prime Minister or a reshuffled Parliament.
Will the West re-discover the principle of "sound money"?
The moral claim real money places on society on behalf of its bearer comes not from the intrinsic value of the token but from the fact that the bearer had previously produced some good or service deemed valuable by others. This is what gives money its moral legitimacy.
Rubber flip-flops, aisle three. 12-pack of 3/2 beer in the cold-case in the back. Chips, peanuts, and pretzels, aisle twenty. Check-cashing, 6-month Certificates of Deposit and car loans, aisle 7, just past the Slim Jim display.
Andy sends word that Jefferson County in Alabama just filed for the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Outlier or vanguard? We'll see.
Spiking another myth: public school teachers are not underpaid. Public-sector employees tend to assume that private-sector workers get paid a lot more than they actually do. Public-sector employees also tend to undervalue their own (expensive) benefit packages, and don't include them in their base salaries. Career public-sector workers would be shocked at how little money comparable private-sector workers actually make, especially when private-sector benefits are compared to public-sector benefit packages.
It seems obvious that the Eurozone is going to have to get smaller, if not break up entirely. The question is: how will the Eurozone nations handle it? They haven't exactly dazzled with their political or economics skills so far.
Only bonds...and gold. Me? I'm a goldbug, so I'll take the barbaric metal.
The Italian crisis: getting rid of Berlusconi won't solve the problem. No more than getting rid of Papandreou in Greece will solve their problems. In every deeply indebted country (including ours), the main problems are chronic and structural imbalances in the economy, exacerbated by demographic pressures. And Europe is in much more dire straits than the US is, especially in terms of demographics.
Tom Dickinson of Rolling Stone is quite convinced that the GOP is the "party of the rich". I guess that should make me happy, seeing as how I'm suddenly pals with a lot of rich people. I wonder if I could give Warren a call and hit him up for a couple hundred mill? It's not much to ask, from one rich guy to another.
Obama's NLRB: no Republicans allowed. His Majesty is quite put out with the GOP, it seems, and he will not have his courtiers and palace lackeys associate with the blackguards.
Slamming the door on the inequality myth.
Robert Reich, liberal Fascist. Rub the paint off a so-called "progressive", and you usually find a totalitarian Statist underneath.
Fannie Mae gets another $7.8 Billion in taxpayer bailout money. Bringing the total GSE bailout bill to around $200 Billion. More or less. Who's counting?
Can you really blame high college-grad unemployment on a poor choice of majors? I think you can, in a significant measure. Prior to the downturn, it was possible to get a high-paying job with pretty much any major as long as you had a degree; the degree itself and not the course of study was the important thing. But as the job market dwindled and the stock of applicants exploded, employers had to winnow down their candidates to people who actually, you know, had a background in whatever field they were trying to get into. If you think of labor as a salable good, it's a buyer's market right now and as a seller you have to offer the best product (your labor) at the best price (your wage). Employers can afford to be choosy.
Some students recently walked out of Greg Makiw's econ class in protest at what they saw as biased teaching. I know what you're thinking, but Mankiw was actually doing a proper job -- the students were objecting to Mankiw's (supposed) libertarian hostility towards Keynesian/Marxist economics. I link this article mainly to show what a bunch of clueless dimwits the walkouts are. (If I had walked out on every far-left dipsy-doodle leftist hippie freak professor I had during college, I would have had precious little classroom time. Sometimes you have to sit through stuff you disagree with. Hell, sometimes you even learn stuff, and discover that your smartass 20-year-old self isn't infallible after all.)
Not a good time to get into equities? It's not a good time for bonds either. Or...anything, really. Investors don't have many good options available to them except to diversify and hope for better days.
UPDATE 1: The financial folly of fairness. I have many differences with Megan McArdle, but this article is really very good.

I only saw the one clip on the news- so maybe the rest of his performance made up for it (based on past experience, though, I'm not holding out much hope). It was seriously, seriously painful. I'm sure one of the anti-Perry's on the blog will take great delight in expounding upon it in great detail.

Just because the preppies at NRO want Their Boy nominated, and a bunch of blowhard "pundits" have decided Mutt is "inevitable," we're going to be stupid enough to put an unprincipled and probably totally insincere Pretty Boy up against Osama Obama?
That would be an incredible mistake, for both the party and the country.

It's not as bad as it looks to those of us on the right for several reasons:
1) We're hypersensitive to appearances after 8 years of Bush and relentless media bullshit. What strikes us as devastating is either just funny or meh to a lot of people. Many are looking for a candidate they can relate to. EVERYONE can relate to a brain fart. That's why the term "brain fart" exists. He just needs to handle it well and put that face on it.
2) Many of us (not me) have picked a candidate other than Perry. Those people are all too cheerful in blowing this out of proportion to eliminate competition. That's part of the game, but they are blowing it out of proportion, nonetheless.
Resist we much.
It's a bullshit "standard."

Yes, and no.
There is no "substantive selection." Who have we got?
Mittens.- Not "just" no. Besides a terrible record as far as actual conservative governance, he still "likes" mandates. No.
Perry- Couldn't talk his way out of a ticket. If he actually had been pulled over wrongfully.
Cain- No meaningful record- and based on his quick-draw skill with the Race Card, I'm beginning to think that's the biggest disqualifier in the race.
Newt- Baggage. Plus more baggage. Smart guy, though.
Bachman- Tardisil.
RON!! PAUL!!- 'Nuff said
<Anyone else> "Who?"
The only ones of any "substance" are Mittens, Perry, and Newt, and all of them can be seen as "fatally flawed." The real issue is that no Republican candidate will be able to do it on his own, he'll need lots of volunteers who are willing (as so many Barack Obama supporters were in '0

Yup. I've had multiple conversations with public sector employees where I have had to explain that private sector employees have to contribute fairly substantially to their health insurance and that there pretty much are no more defined benefit retirement plans and that defined contribution plans only match a very small amount. I've had people stare at me like I suddenly sprouted a new head. Oh, not to mention the getting fired at any time for no reason at all thing. There aren't. You'd expect AOSHQ to have a higher quantity of substance-driven voters, but look at the commentary. This community KNOWS that the style-based system is precisely what the media and elites want, because that allows them to continue to frame elections and guide who gets into office. What grinds most on me is the favoring of shininess over substance. That's what has Mutt Romney "winning" in the eyes of the Limousine Conservative crowd.
The president need not be a skilled debater. That so-called skill is way over-emphasized. I'm comfortable that Perry would know what to do in a crisis, even if he wasn't as slick as we might like in the debates.
In an emergency, Osama Obama will sell us out and raise taxes; Mutt Romney will fluff his elaborate coiffure. Perry and Cain will act. The Newt will discuss the issues involved at great length.

Conservatives should worry less about a brain fart and more about how to reverse that trend. The real enemy to a healthy republic is pop culture. Talk about an opiate for the masses! Bread and circuses, bread and circuses.
Entertainment news, including sports news, has replaced real reporting for the vast majority of citizens. The rest get what little info they have from the MSM, which is woefully biased.
We're quite lucky that any Republican polls close to the SCOAMF at all, and that's more because he's a SCOAMF than because the people like Republicans.
People don't care, and don't want to know the truth, until it marches up to their door, takes away everything they have, and turns them out into the street. Even then, they will swallow any bullshit that offers them a semi-plausible scapegoat.
I'm starting to wonder if man really can self-govern. It is far too easy for people to not pay attention and to use only emotional impulse to guide decision making.

And now they are refusing to even acknowledge this transaction, and apparently the management of MF Global is not yet talking. Why? Because it was an insider deal, and they don't want to give back the
stolen moneyÂ…
This is a scandal of the first order, and a severe test for the Obama Justice Department, the regulatory agencies, and the exchanges. This is a great crime, undeniably premeditated, and possibly the tip of an iceberg that would shake the public confidence in a deeply corrupt financial system.

Has anyone tried to read the Rolling Stone article (Tim Dickinson, "How the GOP Became the Party of the Rich")? I can't speak to the tendentious claims made against today's GOP Congressional caucus; I'm too flabbergasted by the author's fanatically spurious retelling of 30 years' of economic history. Here's where my jaw -- already on the floor -- went through the boards:
"With the nation still mired in the worst financial crisis since the 1930s, Republicans have categorically rejected the one financial policy with a proven record of putting the country back on a more prosperous footing..."
What's that financial policy, you ask? Tax increases. I s**t you not... TAX INCREASES. That line alone almost makes you forget that that author's go-to guy for quotes on the tax policy of the 80s and 90s and today is... Lincoln Chafee.
Please, someone needs to convince a writer/blogger with even the most tenuous grasp of, you know, economics to absolutely fisk the bejeebus out of this piece. Pease.

>>>don't know how toasted Perry will be over his 53 second flub, actually. I didn't watch the debate, as per my usual, and I wonder how many did. This morning's news is filled with Penn State stuff. It'll pop up in commercials, obviously, but there's plenty of fodder for negative ads on the others as well. That Huntsman ad about Romney running away is pretty juicy, but do people really base their votes on those sorts of things?
All the conservative sites are playing it up. Even drudge seems to be leaving it above the fold for as long as possible.
Everyone has gaffes, other candidates had gaffes last night, most of what came out of Cain's mouth was idiotic, but people have pegged perry as an idiot and therefore any mistake he makes is pounced on.
While people are willing to forgive Cain's sexual transgressions or lack of knowledge on most any subject, Perry gets no second chance.
That's why I've convinced myself we're stuck with Romney. Perry is the only other candidate who can make it in the long haul and has a great record for a general election run, but eveyone here is letting perfect be the enemy of good.
Fine, I can't change reality. Newt, Perry and Cain will split the conservative vote in the early primary states and Mitt will sweep all four. Then Newt and Cain will probably drop out because they lack funds to continue and at that point it'll be Paul, Romney and Perry and there won't be enough time to catch up.
The elections start in less than 2 months.

I can't recall if you're a Cain or a Romney supporter, either way: You need to be honest with yourself that the same standard by which you judge Perry not viable is the same things the rest of us see that will sink either of those two as well. Some will even go so far as to suggest that the flaws of Cain or Romney are sufficient to kill the GOP if they should get the nomination.
And I can't say they'd be too far off. One guy will ensure we are stuck with a national health care plan along with various compromises with the Dems to find a middle ground and the other is going to give away the store to the Dems through an ever-higher ratcheting brand new sales tax.

The economy is shit, the government runs health care and the auto industry, we've got more debt than our ability to repay it, the courts are already packed with Dems, etc. etc.
And Mitt has a 59 point plan to throw this lever, press that switch, jigger that dial and other wise lightly massage around the edges of the problem. While Cain's big idea is to maintain the current amount of revenue by giving them a sales tax.
The "ganster shit" is already in place, the machine is already humming along at top speed--electing a guy who is merely going to stop any additional "ganster shit" or who plans to keep most of it the same is no improvement.

Up until a few weeks ago, the landscape was Mitt or someone more conservative. The smart money was on Perry, with Cain getting in the way with a temporary spike in the polls.
Perry started self-immolating with bad debates and ill-conceived attacks on Mitt that came off poorly. Last night was supposed to be the new, prepared Perry. That didnÂ’t work out too well. Cain has been taking fire and has received growing support due to the publicÂ’s distaste for character assassination, but no serious observer of politics can conceive of him getting the nomination.
What would be interesting to know is what is happening behind the scenes with those who chose not run. Is Jeb or Marco rethinking their position? Palin seemed on the verge of endorsing Perry, but is she taking another look? As mentioned previously, itÂ’s not too late for someone to jump in.

Yep. We have state liquor stores, no wine sales via a grocery store (we can get light beer via a grocery store), and rules about having to order food when you are at a place like sports "bar" in order to be served a drink.
We also have a law called the Zion Curtain that prohibits places from visibly drawing beer from taps. They have to hide the process from the customers. That got slipped in during the last legislative session without discussion.
For a state that prides itself on being a Red State, they are pretty anti-business.
There's a lot to like about this place -- it's lovely, it's traditional and "conservative", and the weather is very good -- but there is not a bright line between Church and State here. It'll be interesting to see if that changes. It really needs to if they are going to become a more competitive state.

I've said this numerous times, it's nearly irrelevant who (Romney/Perry) prevails in the general, what's every bit as vital is we achieve ironclad control of the House and Senate--to the extent that the Dems can't even play a spoiler role. Such a majority would act as a restraint on liberal (Romney) impulse to "reach across", and an invaluable aid to further (Perry) conservative agendas. Failing that--well, no more need be said.

First: Not going to happen. Gerrymandering works.
Second: if the base can't support whoever the nominee is (and, like others, I suspect it'll be Romney, as much as that makes me want to retch), then we won't get the turn-out necessary to take the Senate.
If, on the other hand, we have an energized base, then there is a chance (however slim) that we take the senate comfortably enough to make the Democrats there an afterthought.

And, again, it's at the State and Local level where such things should be done (if they're going to be) because that gives the citizenry the best chance to change them if they so desire.

So a hearty "FU" right back at ya'
I'm sure you've read it but don't want to believe it: While Romney and Perry have spent the last few days in IA, St. Cain was in--wait for it--Alabama and Arizona. Who have their primary's on March 13, 2012 and February 28, 2012. Neither states having any clout on the nomination. We're less than 60 days away from a vote in Iowa. And Cain is dicking around in states that don't count and don't vote for nearly 120 days.
Who's the serious candidates again?
But that's ok: Cain will--WILL--endorse Romney by March 31, 2012. Cain will never endorse anyone else. He has a history of splitting the conservative vote to allow the liberal to win, why should he change now?

All this emphasis on debating skills has totally gone over the edge. It's a longstanding meme over at NRO and elsewhere: Mutt Romney and The Newt look like candidates, they talk nice, and they're From Our Crowd. Therefore, never mind what they have/haven't done, what their true positions are -- on any given day -- or what effect they might have on dismantling the Osama Obama regime's totalitarian machinery.

Say what? I don't think this has been true for at least 30 years. The baby boom generation inundated the colleges and the huge excess of graduates really diluted the market value of the 4-year degree.
If you're someone connected, such as Chelsea Clinton, you can graduate with a B.A. and then be offered a $100,000/yr. position at an East Coast firm, but this sort of thing is only for the elite few. Schlubs like us have to prove our worth again and again with a degree in something that the market is currently demanding, not to mention endless certifications and re-certifications.

Yep, those are the only places you can buy wine, hard alcohol, or beer above a certain proof (like any Belgian beer!). The wine regs are the biggest hassle for me because I cook with wine a lot.
Because of the scandalous mismanagement they were losing money, so the state was/is threatening to close the (only) two in Provo/Orem (population 500,000). The funny thing is that the locals didn't want to lose the revenue, even though Provo/Orem is something like 80 or 90% LDS (although admittedly there are a fair number of "Jack" Mormons in that figure) so the state relented, at least for now.

There may still be some dry towns left in Massachusetts. I grew up in a suburb of Boston that was slow to change over. Liquor stores are private, but heavily regulated and licensing is a pain. They sell everything, from beer to booze. In smaller towns, there are some exceptions, where general stores might sell beer & wine, but they are quite rare.
In NH, part of the Mass alcohol picture, the state runs liquor stores, selling wine & spirits, no beer. They sell beer & wine in grocery and convenience stores.

I only supported Cain because I couldn't stand the vitriol from our side based upon innuendo.
That is kind of a bizarre reason for supporting a candidate. I couldn't stand the rush to judgement based on innuendo either, but it really doesn't make Cain any better a candidate.

Same here. I'm worried though that this gaffe will be all that some people remember from the debate and judge Perry more harshly than what is really due because of it. We'll see though.
It's too bad we can't merge candidates together because Newt/Perry would make one hell of a team and they would complement each other.

You gotta be careful with stupid of that concentration, minimal exposure well rinsed with mockery is safe but prolonged exposure is bound to have damaging effects.

I fully expect we're going to get stuck with Romney. From my perspective, his response to Perry on Social Security put him firmly in the third tier candidates. That was the real old-style politicking and indicated to me that he hasn't got a clue on the financial hellstorm that's coming. I'll wind up voting for whoever is the GOP candidate (admittedly probably going to be Romney). The future is looking very bleak.

Lesson Kiddies: Don't tweet about criminal activity if the Cartels can track you down.
Better Lesson?: Drug Cartels should be treated as the terrorist organizations they are and every member should be hunted down and taken off the streets- one way or another.

I don't know enough about the subject matter to know if there is a reasonable explanation, but I will say that believing that a bureaucrat would be acting to punish one area and benefit another (for whatever reason) is not "conspiracy-minded." That's actually fairly normal.

322....Additionally Newt seems to be the only one actually aware that the MSM is part of the Democratic party and is an enemy of conservatives, America, and freedom. I enjoy his ruthless attacks on the moderators and their wrong-premise questions.
Which is precisely why the MSM will go all out to vilify and destroy him....if he is our nominee.
Yeah, I know.....they will try to do that to whomever is nominee. But with Newt, it will be personal. It will be an all out jihad.
I love Newt. But people seem to be forgetting how badly the media ganged up on him back when he was Speaker. When he quit, they were insufferable smug about it. They will be even more vicious this time.
Posted by: ConservativeMenAreJustHotter at November 10, 2011 07:36 AM (2wW4j)
I ask you the same question I ask all those who are mesmerized by The Newt:
What has he actually accomplished while livin' large on the public teat, and later when he has relied on donations to keep him from having to take, you know, a real job?
Talking, no matter how well, doesn't count.
I fear we are going to lose in '12, for two major reasons: 1) We are seemingly accepting the inevitability of a faux "conservative" whose message is, to be charitable, inconsistent; and 2) we are going all "American Idol" with our politics, micro-analyzing debate performances and confusing them with substance.
It would be easy to say "we deserve what we get" for such stupidity. But that means the rest of us get boned along with the dummies.

He actually lead the Republican Revolution in the 90s pretty ably. And you can complain that what the Contract with America accomplished wasn't nearly enough, but it (however briefly) was a step in the right direction. On top of that, he's got a good head for policy- when he'll use it.
Mainly, though, I think you're probably right. Which is why I'm still supporting Perry- even though I think that's a lost cause.
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) says 'No' to RINO Romney at November 10, 2011 07:39 AM (8y9MW)
I know he's flawed, but he's actually won battles at the federal level that Mitt would not even try to tackle.
But I'm with Perry for the ride.

PerryDog was crossing Debate Road and was run over by a truck.
Now we have children gathered around the vet saying: “He’s gonna be OK, isn’t he Doc?”
ItÂ’s time for the adults to tell the kids that PerryDog is going away to big farm where he can run and play without worrying about Debate Road anymore. TheyÂ’ll know deep down that heÂ’s dead, but at least the picture of him romping through the fictitious farm will sooth their minds.

But then, Burke's specialty is hindsight, coming up with interesting relations between well documented historical events. He is apparently out of his depth when it comes to dealing with people who claim to know the future. He pretty much peaked with the second Connections series.
